Chapter 5
Nozomi’s father tore through the town, earning surprised looks from other early risers, all wondering what he was panicked and running through town with a recently fired shotgun in hand. He stopped at the door to the house of the small town’s one doctor, pounding on it frantically. He was answered by a blurry-eyed woman, her long black hair mussed up from sleep and her violet eyes blurry.
“What is it?” she asked grumpily, yawning.
“Please, hurry! I made a horrible mistake! Grab your medical bag and follow me, quickly!” the blond man cried desperately. Suddenly wide-awake, the lady doctor ran inside, grabbing a large black bag and swiftly changing her house slippers to steel-toed leather boots meant for long hikes. She followed the desperate man, hoping they wouldn’t be too late.

Yusei was still roaring weakly in pain, his head light from the loss of blood. Nozomi was crying, still doing her best to stop the bleeding. It had slowed considerably, but with the Neko in his condition, the human girl wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing. ‘Damn, if only I had some way of getting Dr. Kanzaki here,’ she thought, silent tears falling at her helpless situation. She heard something crashing through the brush, and her breath hitched.
‘No, not a wild animal, not now!’ she though, fresh tears falling faster at this point. She held Yusei close, shocked at how cold his usually hot body seemed to be getting. Suddenly, she was roughly pushed aside as a woman knelt down in front of Yusei, someone else grabbing his shoulders to keep him steady. Nozomi gasped.
“Papa?” she cried incredulously. She smelled the scent of gunpowder about him, knowing what he had done. She was about to boldly slap him across the face before realization struck.
‘He ran to get Dr. Kanzaki afterward. He realized his mistake after he acted. Dammit! Even with her here, it’s -’ she didn’t allow herself to finish that thought. She couldn’t allow herself to think that.
Dr. Kanzaki finished examining the wound. “You’re lucky that shot was expired, it didn’t do it’s intended job, Kurosaki-san. The pellets remained clustered together and minimized the damage. Let’s get him inside, he needs emergency surgery. I’m just glad I grabbed the right bag,” the woman spat, disgusted at her friend’s behavior. Mr. Kurosaki nodded, hanging his head in shame. He gently picked up the limp Neko, carrying him into the cabin as Dr. Kanzaki rushed to open the door. Nozomi quickly followed, extremely worried about her lover’s fate.
