Queen's Gambit

gaia lover wondered if I could hold another contest. I'll think about it, but I'm reluctant to do so before TwilightDragon has submitted their request. Also, March saw the release of a bunch of games I wanted (including, perhaps ironically, Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship 2008) so updates will probably be slow for a while and I may, in fact, start up again with writing for other fandoms as well.

"It's bright and magical," said Paladin. "I don't like it much myself, but people there can probably help you out."

"I see. Say, you wouldn't be talking about the Sanctuary in the Sky, would you?"

"You've heard of it then?" Paladin asked.

"Kind of," Alexis replied. "Hey, uhm... can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Freya said you have a girlfriend?"

"She's more than that to me, but yes," Paladin replied.

"She must be very special," Alexis said.

"She is."

"Who is she?"

"That's personal."

"Oh."

Alexis looked around helplessly, trying to come up with a new topic of conversation so she could ignore the fact that her Tiger had begun to growl.

"Something's wrong," Paladin said.

"What? What is?"

"See that tree?"

Alexis dutifully looked in the direction Amazoness Paladin had indicated. There was indeed a tree, but that didn't really surprise her since this was still a forest.

"What about it?" she asked.

"This is the third time we've passed it."

"Are you saying we're lost?"

"No," Paladin replied. "Enchanted."

"Someone cast a spell on us?"

"Something like that," Paladin said. "Someone doesn't want us to leave. And when I say 'us', I mean 'you'." She sighed. "I think I know a way to solve our problem, but I'm not sure you'll like it."

"Try me," said Alexis.

"You'll have to venture into the forest on your own. If my guess is correct, you'll soon run across someone claiming that they bewitched us and led us astray. They'll then offer to lift the spell in return for a favour."

"A sexual favour, you mean," Alexis said.

"Since we're talking about you, yes," Paladin said. "However, you may not have to."

"What do you mean?" Alexis asked.

"In case you haven't noticed, everybody wants to have sex with you," Paladin said. "That gives you a kind of power. Use it."

"How?" Alexis asked.

"I don't know," Paladin said. "You'll have to find out on your own. Unless you like getting swept away by every pretty face that comes along."

"Well..." said Alexis. "It's been fun so far. Kind of. But turning an entire forest against me is going a bit too far." She jumped off her Amazoness Tiger, feeling surprised that the beast didn't make a single attempt to bite her as she landed. "I'll think about it," she continued. "Wait here for me?"

"Of course."

It would've been nice if the forest had been dark and mysterious, brimming with magical creatures lurking just out of sight. Instead, Alexis wasn't surprised to find it was just another forest. After picking her way between the trees for only a short while, she came across a small clearing.

"Ah, there you are."

Alexis had more or less expected the voice and wasn't even all that surprised that it had come from somewhere behind her. She turned around to see a woman wearing a long green dress sitting on a branch. She had dark blue hair, her skin was a pale, almost sickly green and her eyes were almost obscured by a purple headband. A large purple note-like scythe leaned casually against her shoulder.

"Here I am," Alexis replied.

"I have been expecting you," Hibikime purred, pushing herself off her branch and floating slowly towards the ground.

"You should. You led me here."

"Yes," the woman replied. "Just a minor enchantment to... guide you to me. Unsupervised."

"Paladin's not that bad," Alexis said.

"I'm sure you think so," Hibikime said as she came very close indeed. "Now. You want to be on your way. And, as it happens, there is something I want as well."

"Me?"

Hibikime smiled. "How observant."

"Well..." said Alexis. "How to put this? Forget it."

The woman blinked. "W-what?"

"I'm not gonna have sex with you," Alexis said.

"If I don't lift the spell you'll wander these woods forever," Hibikime hissed. "You have no choice."

"Exactly," said Alexis.

Suddenly Hibikime's scythe was in her hands. "I urge you to reconsider."

"What? You're going to threaten me with violence? Yeah, that'll get a girl going."

Hibikime stared into Alexis's eyes for longer than she felt comfortable with. Then she laughed melodiously.

"How eloquently argued," the woman said. "Fine then, you can leave."

Hibikime turned away. She raised her scythe, chanted something in a language Alexis didn't recognise, then brought it crashing down onto the ground.

"That's it?" Alexis said. "The spell's been lifted."

"Of course." Hibikime faced her again and smiled. "Though the bit with the scythe was just a little perfomance for your benefit. In any case, before you go, please accept this."

Alexis took the offered card and quickly slipped it into her deck. "Thanks," she said. "Now, there's something I want to give you as well."

Before Hibikime could ask what it was, Alexis had her arms around her and her lips pressed against hers. She could sense the woman's surprise, but she recovered quickly and soon kissed her back deeply.
