Chapter Four
"You know, you really are good," Malik laughed slightly, "That's the third time in a row that you beat me." Ryou smiled slightly, looking a bit proud of himself. They'd spent the last half hour practicing Duel Monsters, and Ryou had beaten Malik every time.
"Guess I'm a bit rusty still," Malik said thoughtfully, "I haven't played in a while. Not that I'm saying you're bad or anything!" he added quickly, "You're a great duelist. Did you ever duel in competitions?"
Ryou nodded, holding up three fingers. "Third place?" Malik smiled, "That's impressive!" It was rather amazing how well Malik and Ryou understood each other. Even though Ryou hadn't ever spoken to Malik yet, whether it took too much energy to do so, or Ryou was still too shy, Malik wasn't sure. But he could wait, and every now and then tried to get Ryou to laugh or giggle even, but only got a smile instead. Which was fine; Malik figured Ryou would talk to him when he felt comfortable enough.
"Well, it is getting late; I should make dinner," Malik smiled, leaving the cards on the table and heading into the kitchen. Ryou blinked, then set to work cleaning them up himself. "Oh, Ryou, you don't have to do that, I can get them later," Malik told him, but Ryou smiled slightly and shook his head, setting the cards away again. "Well, thank you," Malik smiled, nodding his head slightly. Ryou nodded back, before fading slowly, his presence still strong, letting Malik know he was still there.

Malik looked around the noisy Tokyo airport, amazed at how many people fit into one place. He knew Tokyo was the busiest city in Japan, but he didn't know just how busy it could be!
He checked his cellphone. 10:45. Fifteen minutes late, he thought to himself. Marik and Bakura hadn't called to say their plane was leaving late or arriving late, so Malik wondered what was up.
"MAAAALIK!"
"AH!"
Malik stumbled slightly as he was hugged by a flurry of tan, blonde and white. He laughed, hugging them back, "I take it you guys missed me?"
"Very much so!" Bakura grinned, ruffling Malik's hair, "How've you been?"
"You know, the usual," Malik smiled, looking over his friends. They both hadn't changed much at all. Marik still wore his hair spiked up and out, though Bakura's already long white hair was a bit longer.
After getting Marik and Bakura's bags into the trunk of the car, they were on their way back to Malik's apartment. "You guys remember how I can sense things, like ghosts and stuff, right?"
"Mmm Hmm..." Bakura nodded, resting his arms on the top of the front seat, leaning forward interestedly, "Why? Got a ghost living with you?"
"...How'd you know?" Malik blinked.
Bakura smirked, "I'm just that awesome," he snickered, "But seriously?"
"Yep," Malik smiled, "His name is Ryou. Apparently there was a fire that started in my apartment, some months ago, and he was one of the twelve people who died in it."
"That's some creepy shit," Marik muttered, "...Is he hot? ... OW! BAKURA!" Marik pouted, rubbing his head where Bakura had smacked him one. "That'll teach you to ask stuff like that infront of your BOYFRIEND again," Bakura frowned, then looked back to Malik, "So..."
"So.. the thing is, he's really, and I mean really, shy. When I first moved in, I could feel his presence. And it took a while, but he slowly started showing himself to me. Just recently, about a week or two ago, he finally showed his whole self. He still won't talk yet though. I'm not sure why."
"Maybe he was a mute?" Marik suggested.
"No.. I don't think so. He said that he'd played Duel Monsters, and was won third place in some competition. You kinda need to talk to duel," Malik pointed out.
"...Point taken."
"So, you want us to be aware of him, is what you're saying. Basically, don't do anything too insane to scare him away, because you like him," Bakura smirked.
"Yes, exactly," Malik nodded, "I like having him around... it makes the place feel less lonely. And I feel like I have to help him out."
*~*~*~*
"Alright, home sweet home," Malik smiled, leading Marik and Bakura into his apartment. He'd told Ryou earlier that he was going to pick them up and bring them home today, so he could be ready for it and not be surprized when two new people suddenly show up. Malik could still feel Ryou's presence, and knew he was close by, probably just watching for now, while keeping himself hidden. He wasn't sure yet if Marik and Bakura would be able to see him or not. He also wasn't sure if Ryou was capable of letting other people see him.
"Looks nice," Bakura grinned, looking around, "Where do we sleep?"
"Guest room, of course," Malik smiled, leading them down the hallway, "It's the same size as my bedroom, which is across the hall. Bathroom is at the end of the hall. You guys can make yourselves at home."
Malik left Bakura and Marik alone to unpack and get situated. He headed into the Kitchen to start making Lunch for them, smiling as he felt Ryou's presence close by, but didn't actually see him. "It's alright Ryou, they're unpacking, and will be staying in the guest room. Marik and Bakura are my two best friends; I'm sure you'll like them." He paused, before saying, "You can take your time though; don't feel rushed to appear to them or anything. I told them about you, so they know you're here and all."
"Okay."
Malik paused. He swore he heard Ryou speak. He may not be able to see him at the moment, but he knew he heard a soft and quiet voice. It was quiet, but the important thing was that it was there. Ryou'd finally spoken to him, if only just one word. That must mean that he was trusting Malik a little more. Malik smiled, "You've a very nice voice, Ryou," he smiled, "I'd like to hear it more often... if you're comfortable enough. If not, it's okay... it's just nice being able to talk to you and have you respond to me."
There was only silence, but Malik was still happy. He was making a lot of progress with Ryou, and knowing that Ryou was trusting him more, made him feel good.

"So, where are you working now?" Marik asked, taking a drink of his Ramune. The three of them were seated at the dining room table, eating Ramen for Lunch.
"At this big electronics shop in town," Malik replied, "It's not really bad. The posistion I have is a lot of inventory work, so it keeps me busy. What've you guys been up to?"
"Oh you know... same old stuff. Dueling a lot, winning lots of competitions..." Bakura grinned, "Someone suggested we start a Duel Training School."
"Now that's an idea," Malik smiled, feeling Ryou's presence closer now. Probably listening and watching Marik and Bakura, getting used to them, Malik thought to himself, smiling inwardly.
"Yeah, that's what I said," Marik snickered, "Since we're like, the greatest dueslists in all of Egypt now."
"Wow, so egotistical of you Marik," Malik laughed, shaking his head. Marik smirked. "I know."
