Chapter 5: Visions and Thoughts
Yami lie on his side in his bed. His head in his hand propped on his elbow while his other hand stroked Yugi who faced away from him and under the sheets.
“I…I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Yami asked softly.
“I didn’t…keep my promise.”
Yugi closed his eyes.
Yami’s hand stopped.
“What?”
“I promised that I would be safe. But I wasn’t. I…let those men take me and I put Dalila in danger. I got her hurt. And I broke my promise to you. I’m so sorry.”
His tears made their way to his voice.
“Oh, Yugi.”
Yami wrapped both arms around Yugi’s waist as he pushed himself against the other burying his face in Yugi’s mane.
“You didn’t ‘let’ those men take you…and Dalila’s fine…and you didn’t break your promise. Because you are safe. You’re with me. And that’s safe enough. There is nothing to be sorry for. If anything, I should be sorry.”
Yugi opened his eyes.
“I shouldn’t have gone to that meeting. I should have stayed with you.”
“No.”
Yugi turned in Yami’s arms so his face was against Yami’s chest.
“No. You are Pharaoh. Your people need you. Besides, you might have gotten hurt. And…I wouldn’t have been able to bare that.”
Yami was touched by the words as he leaned his head down and kissed Yugi’s brow.
‘That’s just how I felt. I was so worried that you…’
Yami couldn’t finish his thought as he drifted to sleep with his love nestled beside him.
**
Pasis sat in his shack on the outskirts of the city. He was getting his wounds wrapped by a woman in rags who looked to be on the verge of an emotional breakdown.
“So you failed?” a man asked.
“Watch it!” Pasis growled causing the girl to wince in fear.
“We didn’t get a chance to grab anything valuable…but we did ‘learn’ something helpful.”
The men looked at him questioningly.
“The Pharaoh has a soft spot. A young boy named Yugi.”
“Yugi?”
Pasis looked at him.
“Othious? You know him?”
“Tch. Yeah. I worked with him down at Old Man Alshid’s farm. He’s a puny twerp with no sense of strength at all.”
“Yes, that I saw,” Pasis remarked.
“But nonetheless, it is a factor that we can work into a plan to get money, or better yet…all of Egypt,” he said with an evil chuckle.
**
Seto walked through the halls of the palace on his way to a temple to perform his daily praise to the gods when he saw Yami sneaking out of his own room. He turned and saw the high priest. Seto raised an eyebrow in question.
Yami put a finger to his lips signaling silence as he walked over to and past Seto who followed.
“Yugi’s still asleep and he needs all the rest he can get,” Yami explained.
“I see. And where were you planning on going without your ‘friend’?”
Yami rolled his eyes.
“I was going to take a bath, if that’s alright with you, oh mighty priest of the gods,” Yami said mockingly.
Seto chuckled.
“By all means. But what if the little one wakes while you are away?”
“I left him a note that I would be back momentarily and to wait for me. Besides, he was as dead as a rock when I left.”
“Well, I don’t want to keep you from your ‘duties’.”
“Nor I, you.”
They walked their separate ways.
Seto stalked the palace floors to the main temple where in the center stood the statue of Ra and surrounding him were smaller figures of the many other gods and goddess.
Seto lit a fire in a large clay pot at the base of Ra’s feet as he kneeled on his knees and started to pray.
‘Gods of life, gods of death, gods of land, gods of air, gods of both sexes, hear me. I, High Priest Seto Kaiba, ask for wisdom. Whatever the gods wish to be known to me or the world, please speak now as I will listen.’
The flame grew large as the gods answered his prayer for they did need tales to be known.
Images passed into Seto’s mind:
Two people, only shadows, stood in each others arms,
A pure essence surrounds them as they embrace each other;
The two people stand apart as a dark cloud covers them,
The shorter is in pain and lies on the floor, motionless;
BRIGHT FLASH
The two gain back their ability to stand as yet another evil comes,
Both go through emence trauma and guilt;
Many men come as a fight is waged,
Many die;
BRIGHT FLASH
A third figure is shone,
A child in the arms of the shorter;
An almighty creature, a female, stands before them,
The shorter receives great knowledge;
All three shadows live happily together,
The child a successful being for the gods.
Seto snapped out of his trance as he leaned forward on his hand, gasping.
‘What…what was that? A vision of what is to come? What was? Those two figures…and the cloud…a child and an almighty being?’
He stood and peered up to Ra’s face.
“What is it you’re telling me, Great One?”
**
Yami sighed as he sank lower into his bath, arms outstretched on the sides. He laid his head back on a soft pillow-like cushion as he closed his eyes.
‘I wonder if Yugi is up yet…’ he thought.
‘I wonder…how long it will take for him to see me the way I see him. Or…’
It killed him to think this,
‘will he never see me that way?’
**
Yugi slowly opened his eyes to the light of day. He sat up as the heat hit his chest as they were uncovered from the sheets.
“Yami?” he asked the emptiness that didn’t answer.
‘Did he…leave me?’
He slipped of the bed and walked over to a piece of paper that had writings on it. The black ink was still slightly wet. It simply read:
‘I will be out for only a little while. Wait here for me.
Yami’
Yugi sighed. He walked over to the clothes that had been made for him and changed as he waited for his partner.
Yugi stopped his antics.
‘Partner?’
Had he really thought that? What exactly did ‘partner’ mean? A companion? Or…something more? He concluded that it did mean more than just companionship.
‘But how much more?’ he thought to himself.
He dwelled on this unanswered question as he waited.
**
Yami, clean and dry, was walking back to his comrade. He entered the room to see Yugi sitting in a chair looking at the ground, almost sulking.
Yami’s heart sank to see him this way.
“Yugi?”
Yugi quickly looked up. He hadn’t realized Yami had come in.
“Are you alright?”
“Oh, yeah. I was just thinking about someone…I mean thing. Some‘thing’.”
Yugi blushed at his mix-up.
“Would you like to talk about this ‘thing’?” Yami inquired.
Yugi smiled and shook his head.
“It’s nothing. Really. Just meaningless babble in my mind.”
“If you’re sure.”
Yugi nodded. Desperate to change the subject, he added, “Where did you go?”
Yami shrugged.
“No where special.”
“Well, who did you see?”
Yami thought.
“I saw Seto Kaiba.”
“And how is Seto doing?”
“Well…unfortunately,” Yami joked as he smiled.
Yugi giggled as well.
“So, what kind of relationship do you have with Seto, anyway?”
Yami looked at Yugi strangely.
“Didn’t I tell you? He’s my cousin.”
Yugi’s eyes widened.
“He is? Really?!”
Yami chuckled at Yugi’s behavior.
“Yes. His mother was my father’s sister. Regrettably, they are both with the gods along as are their spouses so we grew up together having only each other as any family.”
Yugi’s face fell.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”
Yami smiled.
“It’s alright. It’s all in the past. I prefer to live in the present where things are cheerful…well, most of the time, anyway.”
Yugi nodded.
