Chapter Five

The sun was hidden as the rain began to fall. Bakura watched from the comfort of the couch as the rain hit the glass. But this time he stayed inside. He felt no desire to leave the warmth at the house. It seemed strange now that he thought about it, the desire to stop feeling his emotions toward Ryou. They were what brought them together. If he hadn’t caught that cold yesterday he might still be going out there to try and freeze his heart and soul which Ryou had completely thawed. The talk they had yesterday really opened his mind to what was important to him, and Ryou was important. Things were easier between them now but Bakura knew there was still much to do to straighten things out. Now at least they had a place to start. He snuggled deeper into the blankets that Ryou had brought him earlier. He still had his cold and his fever came back but at least it wasn’t as bad has yesterday which was a relief. He lay there listening to the rain hit the glass, enjoying the warmth for a change. It was nice to do nothing. He was usually off trying to steal the puzzle but today he was going to enjoy doing nothing.

‘Guess I can’t try for the puzzle anymore’ he thought. ‘Ryou is friends with Yugi so I guess I well have to be nice to him.’ He sighed. Things are never going to be the same again.

“You ok Bakura?”

Bakura looked up to see Ryou standing behind the couch.

“Yeah. I was just thinking that’s all.”

Ryou reached out and lay his hand on Bakura’s forehead.

“You still feel a little warm, how about some tea?”

“All right. I am a bit thirsty.”

“I’ll be right back.” Ryou cupped Bakura’s cheek in a gentle caress before leaving for the kitchen. Bakura smiled to himself and turned on is side to face the t.v. It was still on. Neither of them had even thought to turn it off since yesterday and it seemed to have found its way back to the music channel. He remembered Ryou had changed it before he drifted off yesterday. Well at least it was better than watching the rain. Their talk had taken longer than they realized and then going to sleep after that. They missed supper bet neither of them were really hungry when they had woken up dismorning

“Here you go,” Ryou said placing a cup on the coffee table. “Did you want anything else? Another blanket maybe?”

“Not really, would you mind sitting with me for a while?”

“Of course, sit up a bit.”

Bakura did as he was asked and Ryou slid onto the couch. Bakura lay back down so his head rested in Ryou’s lap.

“Better?”

“Yeah.”

Bakura sighed has Ryou began to run his fingers though his hear. Enjoying the gesture he relaxed even more if it was possible. For once he couldn’t have been more happy to get a cold. If he hadn’t gotten sick then Ryou wouldn’t be his. He smiled. He was very fortunate that things had changed for them. A change that they both wanted.

‘I’ve been such a fool treating Ryou the way I did. But now I have a chance to make it up to him. I well proved to him that this was meant to be. No matter what it takes me I won’t lose him.’ He stared at the t.v., still wondering how he had gathered the nerve to talk the way he did. It was a change for him that he never ever considered before. It felt strange to open up like that, but the results were worth it. ‘If I want things to go on, I guess I well have to be more honest, even to myself.’ He yawned as Ryou continued to stroke him like a cat. ‘This feels so nice. I’ll have to get him to do this more often. It makes me feel sleepy though.’

Slowly Bakura drifted to sleep. He was greeted by dreams of Ryou and himself enjoying a warm summer day.

* * *

“Looks like he’s asleep” Ryou said to himself as he noticed Bakura’s even breathing. He continued his petting, enjoying the fee of Bakura’s hair against his fingers.

‘He has such nice hair. I wonder if he well let me brush it. It feels so soft.’ Ryou continued his musing, glad that things were beginning to change between the two of them. He was happy to know how he felt, and was relived to know that his feelings were returned. He wasn’t sure what he would have done if Bakura didn’t feel the same. At least he didn’t have to worry about that anymore. Now all he had to worry about was what the others would think.

He knew that no one but himself trusted Bakura. They didn’t see him the was he did. He was beginning to wonder what they would think. They didn’t trust or understand him. They didn’t really know him or the person benight the mask. A mask he was getting through. He learned more about Bakura yesterday then he did when he first got the ring. He was still amazed by how open he was and the emotion he displayed. It was good ti know that he was affected by those around him. That he could feel like the rest of the world and express his emotions when he needed to. It was far more progress then he had even hoped for. It made him happy to know that not all dreams were impossible to reach.

He watched Bakura sleep. A relaxed expression on his face while his mind wondered in the land of dreams. Ryou smiled but couldn’t help but worry about his friends. He wasn’t really worried about what they thought, to him it didn’t really matter if they approved or not. IT was what they might do that bothered him. He didn’t think it would be to bad. Yugi would keep them from doing anything that would be hurtful. So there wasn’t to much to worry about there. It was more of what they could say that bothered him. After all words could hurt more then anything. And people could be very cruel when they truly wanted to be, that he knew well. There were times when it was what Bakura said that hurt more then what he did. He often wondered why words hurt more, but there was nothing one could really do about what others said. Just like there was nothing he could really do about what they thought of Bakura now. On what they would think when they found out. It was just something he would have to prepare for mentally and hope that things don’t turn out has bad has he thought. He had a habit of blowing things out of proportion.

He looked down at Bakura and smiled.

‘Well if they don’t like it they well have to deal with it... even if I have to spell it out for them. They well have to accept it because we are going to be together for a long time. But we don’t have to tell them now. It would be best if we wait awhile anyway there is still much we need to do for ourselves and each other.’

He rested his hand on Bakura’s shoulder and propped his head up with the other.

‘It seems Bakura has the right idea. Watching him sleep is making me tired. All the chores are done so there’s really nothing to do.’

He looked down at Bakura before closing his eyes. He drifted off to sleep joining Bakura in his dreams.

* * *

He woke up. He wasn’t sure why. One minute he was fast asleep dreaming of Ryou, then the next thing he knew he was up. He stared at nothing remember his dream, wishing he could be back there for a moment more, just to see Ryou dance for him. He smiled to himself and cuddled closer to Ryou. It was a change for him, but a good one. He got the feeling he was in for many more changes like this. Changes that he would enjoy and some that he wouldn’t. But then life was full of changes whether you liked it or not. They came in many forms and there were times when all you could do was face them head on. Face them and do your best to fight it or accept it. He would be a fool to fight this. He had been a fool trying to fight his emotions for Ryou and now that he knows how he feels he has no plans to let him go. He just didn’t know how he was going to make it up to him for all the cruel things he had done to him in the past. It well take time and effort but he would make Ryou forget their past and look forward to the future. He would make them a new past full off happy memories to look back on when they were old and grey. Bakura smiled. He had never really thought of growing old with anyone by his side before, and now that he thought about it it appealed to him more then the moment before. He wanted to grow old with Ryou. To have a full life with happy and sad memories that would only make them stronger. He couldn’t believe it but he wanted it. All the ups and down that came with it.

“In for a penny in for a pound I guess. But I don’t think I would have it any other way’ Bakura thought. ‘It still strange to me thought. I wonder what Ryou thinks of all this. I wonder what his friends well think because of this.’ He paused in his thoughts. He and the others really didn’t get along to well, they only tolerated Bakura because of Ryou. Yes they got on his nerves a lot and there were times that he would give anything to banish them to the shadow realm. But he didn’t. He held back because he knew what they meant to Ryou. ‘I guess he might want to tell them about us now.’ That thought didn’t sit to well with him. He could easily imangen what they could say or do to try and break them up. It wasn’t a happy thought at all.

‘What well I do if they convinced him that we shouldn’t be together?’ Another thought that he didn’t like. ‘I guess it maybe best if we don’t tell them right away. We should keep it between us until the time is right. It well give us the time we need to ourselves.’

His stomach growled. He couldn’t help but blush.

‘So that’s why I woke up.’ He glanced up at Ryou. He watched his face while he slept and he couldn’t help but smile more. A warm feeling growing within, spreading throughout his body, leaving a soothing sensation in its wake. He relaxed in Ryou’s lap as he watched him sleep. How he’s eyelashes caressed his skin. How his lips parted slightly, tempting him for a kiss. How his hair fell about framing his face and caressing his skin that Bakura wanted o touch so much. He stopped his train of thought before it tent any further.

‘He looks so peaceful like that. I should let him sleep, after all he needs his rest and I don’t think he’s gotten much with the way he has taken care of me.’

Carefully he got up, trying not to wake Ryou has his hand fell from Bakura’s shoulder. Bakura placed it in his lap and got off the couch. He watched Ryou, admiring his peaceful expression.

‘He looks like an angel when he sleeps.’ with one last look he make his way to the kitchen.

Once inside he started going through the cubards.

‘Now what to make’ he looked and spied some soup. Gripping a can of chicken noodle he searched for a pot and begun making it.

“Water in, soup in, now I just have to wait for it to boil.”

He got a bowl and spoon and sat them on the counter. He sat at the table, placing his head in his hands and continued thinking.

‘Keeping it between us would be best until they get used to having me around. I still make them nervous. They still worry about what I could do. I guess I well have to be on my best behaviour so they don’t have to worry. I well also have to keep my hands to myself so they don’t suspect anything. But I don’t have to worry about that right now since were not that far yet. But when we do get there I well have to watch myself.’

He looked at the stove and saw that the soup was boiling. He got up, turned off the stove and served himself. Once he was settled at the table he waited for the soup to cool. Lost in his thought he began to eat.

* * *

The smell of soup waft from the kitchen into the living room, slowing bringing Ryou back form the land of dreams. The first thing he noticed was the lack of warmth from his lap. He opened his eyes and saw that Bakura was gone.

‘I wonder where he went’ he thought. The smell of soup catching him again reminding him that he hadn’t eaten much all day.

‘He must of gotten hungry and let me sleep.’ he smiled to himself as he got up and made his way to the kitchen. Stretching as he did so. He walked into the kitchen to find Bakura sitting at the table eating. He came up behind him placing his hand on Bakura’s shoulder. Bakura looked up and Ryou smiled.

“How do you feel?” he asked moving his hand from Bakura’s shoulder to his forehead. “Looks like you fever is gone.”

“I feel fine, are you hungry? There is some soup on the stove.” Bakura said leaning into Ryou’s touch.

“Alright.” He moved and got himself a bowl and spoon. He helped himself to some soup. Sat down next to him and begun to eat. Neither said anything tell their spoons rested in empty bowls. Both thinking of what to say to the other. Ryou glanced at Bakura from the corner of his eyes. He watched him for a moment before deciding to start off. After all he wanted to know what Bakura thought.

“The soup was good, you didn’t have too much trouble cooking did you?”

“No.”

“That’s good.” Ryou looked at Bakura and couldn’t help but smile at his surprised expression. “I know cooking is not really your thing.”

“Oh. Did you sleep well?”

“I did, and you?”

“Yeah, I think it was just what I needed.”

“You know,” Bakura started, “I’ve been thinking about us and I think its best that we keep our relationship to ourselves. Your friends didn’t exactly approve of me living here so I think we shouldn’t tell them. Who knows how they well react if they found out now. And I don’t want to tempt fate anytime soon.”

“I agree. Besides we need time to ourselves and if they knew now then we wont be getting any of that. They would be taking shifts to keep an eye on us.”

Bakura smirked as Ryou pictured his friends sitting outside spying into the window during ass hours of the day.

“That would be funny to see, but it would get annoying quick.”

“Yeah.”

“So we wait to tell them until we are ready to let them know.”

“Yeah.”

They looked at each other and smiled. Ryou stood up and gathered their dishes. Placing them in the sink to be cleaned later.

“The day is half gone, do you want to go out for a bit?” Ryou turned to face Bakura.

“No, lets stay inside. I think that movie I wanted to watch well be on soon.”

Ryou smiled having a good idea why Bakura really wanted to stay inside. If they went outside then they may run into the others instead of having the time to themselves.

“What time is it on” Ryou asked.

“An hour I think.”

Ryou began looking thought the cubards looking for snacks for the movie. Finding popcorn, chips, and even some cookies that were hidden away at some point. Bakura got up and went through the fridge finding some coke and sprite while Ryou made the popcorn. He got some glasses and begun to take them to the livingroom. He went upstairs and got some extra pillows and blankets from the closet. He brought them down and fixed up the couch so they would be comfortable. Minutes later Ryou came out with two bowls of chips.

“Bakura could you get the popcorn its on the counter. And the cookies are right beside it. IF you don’t mind?”

“Sure.”

Watching Bakura leave Ryou looked at the food.

‘Junk food and pop is not something someone should be eating whey they are getting better.’ He thought with a smile. He turned to see Bakura come in with the popcorn and cookies, taking them from him he placed them on the coffee table. They both sat making themselves comfy with the snacks and drinks well within reach. The rest of the day went by full of conversation, movies, and faster than they would of liked. Dinner was upon them before they realized it, and that went by quick as it came.

After dinner they both just sat on the couch holding each other. It was peaceful and quiet after a day full of horror and sci-fi movies. Even the t.v. was off which was a nice change from it constant music it seemed content to play. They even managed to get a few things sorted out between them that put them both at ease.

Ryou glanced up at Bakura as he yawned. He couldn’t help but noticed how cute he looked.

“Bakura.”

“Hmm.”

“Lets go to bed.”

“Hmm.”

Ryou smiled has they got up and locked up the house. They made there way upstairs. Bakura turned to enter his room only to be stopped by Ryou’s hand on his wrist. Bakura looked at him questionly.

“This way,” Ryou said leading Bakura to his room. He smiled at Bakura’s confused expression.

“I still think you have a bit of a fever so I think you should sleep next to me in case you need something.” Ryou said opening his door and leading Bakura in.

Bakura smirked.

“Is sleep all you have in mind?”

Ryou knew what Bakura had in mind but even through they had made a lot of progress today, and he did want that. He knew they were both too exhausted for it. Though they didn’t do much of anything they were both stressed and tired and sleep was what they both needed right now.

“I know what your thinking Bakura and I don’t think were ready for that yet. Right now we both need sleep.” He said gently. He noticed Bakura start to protest for was interrupted by a yawn. He smiled and pulled Bakura to the bed. He pulled the blankets back and Bakura claimed in.

“You don’t want to change?”

“No point. I’ll just have to change when I wake up anyway.”

Ryou shrugged and climed in pulling the covers over them both. Giving in Bakura cuddle up to Ryou wrapping his arms around Ryou. His head on Ryou’s shoulder he let sleep take him. Ryou pulled him closer and lay his head on Bakura’s. He felt Bakura’s even breathing and let his warmth leal him to sleep.
