Chapter four
When Yugi got to school the next morning he was surprised to find Yami waiting outside for him. The taller boy was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets looking tired, or just rather bored. He looked over and smiled a little when he spotted Yugi. Pushing off the wall he walked towards him.
“You’re here rather early…aren’t you?” Yugi asked. Yami just shrugged.
“What can I say; I’m looking forward to our game.” He held up his deck grinning at Yugi. Yugi smiled back and pulled out his deck from a pouch he held on his belt.
“Come on, I’ll walk with you to class.” Yami said putting his deck back.
“You sure you want to show up so soon? I think you nearly gave the teacher a heart attack yesterday. You might really kill him if you show up early two days in a row.” Yugi said as the two boys headed inside. Yami rolled his eyes.
“You havn’t been talking to Marik or Bakura have you?” Yami asked. Yugi shook his head.
“…no…not really. You’re the only person at school I’ve really talked to so far…” He said softly lowering his head. Yami frowned when he thought he’d seen that lonely look in Yugi’s eyes again.
“You seem like an okay kind of guy. Why don’t you try talking to more people? Maybe Malik and Ryou. I think you’d get along with them.”
“I’m not…” Yugi started but cut himself off. He’d been about to say he wasn’t allowed to have friends. Something his father had disapproved of. And one of the reason’s Yugi had been pulled out of school.
Yami watched him silently wondering what Yugi had been about to say. But it became apparent that he wasn’t going to finish his sentence. They walked in silence the rest of the way to class. Upon entering the first thing Yami noticed was Bakura sitting on his desk looking at Marik. The blond boy jerked his head up to look at the door eyes wide then frowned when he saw Yami and looked back down again. Bakura looked over at Yami he motioned for him to come over.
Yami looked down at Yugi who gave him a small smile. “See you at lunch.” He said. “Hope you’re ready to lose.” With that Yugi headed to his own seat. Yami nodded and went over to his two friends.
“What’s wrong?” He asked. “Malik still mad at you?” He asked Marik who seemed to get more upset at the mention of Malik’s name. So Yami looked at Bakura hoping he would have an answer.
“Ryou went over to Malik’s place last night.” Bakura started. “And Malik never answered the door. So he came to my place instead. We tried calling him but he never answered the phone either. And then when we went by to pick him up this morning, his sister had said he never came home the night before.” Bakura said glancing at Marik then back at Yami. “We thought that Marik had managed to apologize to Malik…”
“But I havn’t seen him since yesterday morning.” Marik said. Yami frowned sitting down in his own seat thinking.
“Pissed off or not, Malik wouldn’t just vanish. Not without telling someone. Even if it was just his sister. You sure she hasn’t seen him?” Yami asked looking at Bakura.
“No, she seemed really worried when we said we hadn’t seen him since yesterday. She suggested he was just playing a childish joke, but she still called out of work today.”
“Let’s go tell the principal.” Yami said standing up and pulling Marik up with him.
“What can that old fart do?” Marik growled pulling his arm away from Yami. “All he does is sit behind his desk all day. Or make a fucking announcement over the loud speaker.” Marik said but didn’t sit back down. “Besides, we know he’s not at school. So let’s get out of here before school starts and see if we can FIND him!” Marik headed for the door. Bakura looked at Yami. But Yami’s attention had been caught by Keith who was hovering dangerously close to the new kid.
“I’ll go with Marik.” Bakura said glancing back over at Keith and Yugi then looked back at Yami who was still watching them. Yami might be just as worried about Malik right now as well. But he also didn’t like how Keith seemed to hang around Yugi every chance he got.
“We’ll call you if we find anything.” Bakura said and hurried off before Marik could get too far ahead of him. Keith looked up when the door to the classroom slammed shut and Bakura ran out. He glanced over at Yami giving him a small smirk he leaned down closer to Yugi and whispered to him.
“Meet me at lunch runt; bring some food if you can. I have a job for you.” He said. Yugi looked at him.
“But…I was going to…”
“You’re game can wait, this is more important then that.” He snapped standing up straight and glaring at Yugi who slid down in his seat as if hoping he’d be able to make himself small enough so that Keith would just go away.
Yami glared at Keith from across the room. There was no way in hell he’d let this continue. He started making his way over to them. Keith just grinned looking back at Yugi. He grabbed Yugi by the hair and forced the smaller boy to look up at him. Yugi’s eyes went wide as Keith glared at him. “I better see you later.” He said turning he left before Yami even reached Yugi’s desk. Glaring after Keith making sure he wasn’t going to be coming back Yami looked down at Yugi. The smaller boy was shaking violently, looked extremely pale and looked as if he was going to be sick.
“…Yugi? Are you okay?” Yami asked reaching out automatically and put a hand on Yugi’s shoulder. He had barely touched the boy when Yugi screamed jerking away so violently that he fell on the floor. Yami’s eyes went wide and he jerked back as well unsure of what he’d done to make Yugi react like that. The classroom was fuller now. Yami and Yugi seemed to be attracting all the attention at this point. This didn’t go un noticed by Yugi who, if possible, looked even more terrified to find every eye in the classroom on him.
Scurrying to his feet Yugi ran from the room. Stunned Yami stood there staring at the door that was left open after Yugi’s hasty escape. It only took a few seconds for Yami to decide he was going to go after him. The image of Yugi’s terrified face was going to be forever burned into his brain. //He seriously thought someone was going to hurt him…// Yami thought. It was the only explanation for the way he had pulled away like that. Had Keith already gotten to him? Was he threatening Yugi? Or was it someone else?
It didn’t take long to find Yugi. The halls were empty all kids already in class. The only sound in the hall was the soft sniffling that could be heard coming from the frightened boy that was curled up in a tight ball almost completely hidden in the shadowy corner. Unless you were actually looking for him, he was fairly easy to miss.
Frowning Yami slowly walked over and knelt down in front of Yugi, but he didn’t touch him again. He didn’t want to scare him more then he already was. Watching Yugi now made Yami feel even more like an ass for how he had treated him the first time they had actually met.
“Yugi?” Yami asked wanting to get his attention first. Yugi hiccupped and his soft crying stopped immediately. But Yami noticed how much more Yugi’s shoulders tensed up. “Yugi, are you okay?” Yami asked mentally kicking himself. //Oh sure, he’s just fine that’s why he ran out of class like his ass was on fire and is now here crying.//
Yugi wiped his eyes forcing his tears to stop before he looked up at Yami. “…I…I’m fine…” He said softly. Yami frowned looking at him unsure of what to say next. He’d dealt with people crying before. But he had never once in his life seen someone look so…broken.
“If you ever need to talk about anything…” He said leaving the sentence hanging there. Yugi stared at him a single tear rolling down his cheek. Yami reached out gently wiping it away before Yugi could. “I’m a very good listener.” Yami smiled gently at him, and Yugi looked like he was going to burst into tears again.
“…n-no ones ever been nice to me…” Yugi said. Yami shifted around so he was sitting on the floor instead of kneeling.
“Its hard being in a new school I bet. Did you have friends at your old school?” Yami asked. Yugi shook his head looking down.
“…no…like I said…no one’s ever been nice to me…well, except my grandpa…” Yami stared at him; it was the way the other boy said it that made Yami’s heart break. He sounded so alone.
“What about…what about your parents?” Yami asked before he could stop himself. Realizing instantly that it was the wrong question to ask right now. Yugi’s eyes seemed to glaze over more tears forming quickly.
“m…my….my mama….” Yugi’s voice cracked and he had started shaking again. Yami put a hand on Yugi’s shoulders.
“If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine.” He said. Wide eyes blinked up at him slowly coming back into focus Yugi looked away.
“…I’m sorry…”
“Why are you sorry?” Yami asked looking confused but didn’t move his hand from Yugi’s shoulder yet.
“f-for being like this…”
“Look, whatever happened to make you so upset I highly doubt it was your fault. I can tell whatever it is, is really bad. And even though I’m curious I’m not going to bug you to talk about it because you’re obviously not ready to.” Yami kept his voice gentle not wanting to upset Yugi again. Yugi blinked at Yami, a few more tears rolling down his cheeks. Yugi wanted to believe that Yami was sincere, but he just couldn’t bring himself to trust anyone right now.
//But I can still try…// He thought. Yami reached over and wiped away the remaining tears.
“I would suggest we go back to class, but I don’t think you need that right now.” To Yami’s surprise Yugi shook his head.
“No…I’m fine…I have to go to class…grandpa would be upset if I made a habit of missing classes again…” Yugi said slowly standing up. Yami stood up as well making sure Yugi was steady on his feet. Yami wondered if Yugi had always been this…fragile looking. Yami was used to having Ryou around and the silver haired boy had always seemed more fragile then others, but this was different. Yami could tell that Yugi had the ability to be strong, but it was as if someone had crushed his spirit making every day a challenge for the smaller boy.
“Alright, if you’re sure.” Yami said and walked back to class with Yugi. School seemed to take forever, whether it was because Yami had been making a habit out of being there early the past two days, or because he was really worried about Malik, he wasn’t sure. It was safe to bet that Bakura and Marik had not found the younger blond boy. Even if Malik had been mad at his boyfriend and was planning on vanishing, he would have told SOMEONE. And the fact that Ryou was Malik’s best friend and didn’t know anything, that also made Yami uneasy.
The final school bell rang and Yami was out of his seat before the teacher could even give homework assignments. Grabbing his bag he ran for the door ignoring the teacher that was calling after him. He had to go help Marik and Bakura find Malik. His thoughts focused on that Yami forgot all about keeping an eye on Yugi.
Yugi watched Yami run from the classroom as if someone had set fire to him. He was curious what that was all about, but he wasn’t going to ask. For one thing it was none of his business and for another, Keith was already waiting outside the school for Yugi.
Even though the day had gone by really slow for Yami, it could never have gone slow enough for Yugi. He dreaded seeing his half brother after school. He wasn’t even curious as to what Keith wanted. Because whatever it was Yugi knew it would be no good.
Grabbing his bag he slowly put his stuff away and made his way out of the school watching his feet the whole way as he walked. Before he knew it he was outside.
“There you are ya-lil brat!” Keith snapped. Yugi flinched, he had been trying so hard to take his time he had forgotten that Keith might be pissed.
“…s…sorry…” Yugi said not looking at him. Keith rolled his eyes.
“Whatever, at least you didn’t try running off. Let’s go I want to get this over with quickly.” He said grabbing Yugi by the arm and leading him along. Yugi yelped doing his best to keep up after about half a block Keith let go of Yugi’s arm.
“W…where are we going?” Yugi asked in a soft voice half hoping that it was to much of a whisper for Keith to have heard it.
“I’ve got a job for you.” Keith answered. “And you are not going to tell ANYONE about what I’m going to show you understand?”
Yugi nodded. “…yes sir…” Yugi lowered his head dreading this even more. What on earth could Keith be planning to do? Yugi didn’t want to know, all he wanted to do was run home lock himself in his room and never see or speak to Keith again.
“Hn, we’ll see how well father taught you to obey orders.” Keith said, they walked insolence for a few blocks, Yugi watching his feet the whole time. When he did look up to see where they were he blinked when he saw they were headed into what looked like a cheap hotel. Keith walked right past the front desk and headed down the hallway towards one of the rooms. Swallowing the lump in his throat Yugi followed his mind racing trying to think of all the reasons why Keith would have a room in a place like this.
They stopped at the furthest room from the front and Keith opened the door. The room was pitch black, all the windows were shut and dark blankets and drapes were blocking any light from getting in at all. Yugi looked up at Keith who was peering into the darkness as if trying to see something. Looking satisfied Keith stepped into the room pulling Yugi with him and slamming the door shut rather loudly. That’s when Yugi heard it; there was someone else in the room.
Muffled noises could be heard coming from the direction of the bed. Whoever it was sounded frightened. Yugi looked over to where he thought Keith was, wanting to ask if he could turn on a light. Before he could even think of asking though the dim lights flickered on. Yugi winced at the sudden light.
“We have a visitor.” Keith said and Yugi knew he was talking to whoever else was in the room. Slowly opening his eyes Yugi turned his head to see who was on the bed. His eyes went wide and he took half a step back. He looked over at Keith.
“you…you were…”
“Yes.” Keith said and went over sitting on the bed. “I ran into him by chance, when he decided to skip school yesterday.” Keith chuckled reaching out and grabbing a fist full of blond hair, making the boy on the bed scream into his gag. “I bet if you ever get out of here, you’ll never skip school again. Will you Malik?” Keith asked. Violet eyes glared at Keith making the other boy smirk. Keith shook his hand that was fisted in Malik’s hair.
“Don’t give me that look. You’re the one who decided to date that moron Marik; you’re just my tool for getting even.” Keith let go of Malik shoving him back on the bed and turned his attention to Yugi. Yugi was pressed back against the wall eyes wide fear written across his face.
“Now here is what I want you to do Yugi.” Keith bean turning Yugi’s attention away from the bed. “Every day after school you are going to come here, and make sure he is fed and gets some water. I can’t come here every day. So you’ll only see me here once a week at most.” Keith explained.
“…w…what if….what if I refuse…” Yugi said softly. Keith smirked.
“Then I won’t be the one responsible for starving him to death.”
“I-I…I’ll tell…” Yugi started before letting out a terrified squeak as Keith grabbed him by the neck lifting him off the floor and slamming him into the wall.
“If you tell a single soul about this Yugi.” Keith growled narrowing his eyes at Yugi trying to think of a good threat that would make Yugi listen. He had a feeling that a normal beating wouldn’t do. Slowly Keith’s glare melted away into a smirk. With his free hand he pulled out his cell phone and hit a number on speed dial. Waiting for it to ring he held the phone up to Yugi’s ear.
Yugi was confused, until the third ring when someone picked up the phone on the other end.
“Hello?” Came the all too familiar voice of Yugi’s father. “Hello? Anyone there? Shit…damn cell phones always loosing reception….Hello?” Keith took the phone back.
“Hey dad, it’s me. Just callin’ to say hello. I saw Yugi again at school today.” Keith said slowly lowering Yugi to the floor watching with a satisfied smirk as the smaller boy fell to his knees. He continued talking with their father for a couple minutes before hanging up. He looked back at Yugi who was still in the same position on the floor.
“Will you listen and do everything I tell you to do?” Keith asked. Yugi choked on a sob slowly nodding. “Perfect.” He handed Yugi a key to the room and a credit card.
“Every day you’ll stop and buy some food, and come here to give Malik something to eat. If you can do that, I’ll make sure father doesn’t know where you are.” Keith petted Yugi’s head and left the room. Yugi looked up at Malik who was watching him, Yugi could see the slight shimmer of hope in his eyes that Yugi would help him get out of here.
“…I’m sorry…” Yugi said putting the items in his pocket he stood up and left the room as well, though he left the light on for Malik as he left.

*falls over* yeah, that took WAY longer then I was expecting it too! But don’t worry people I didn’t forget about it! It’s just trying to find the time and the inspiration to write it. I already know pretty much everything that is going to be happening here~ So I won’t forget the plot line for this story, like I do with so many other fanfics. So, sorry that took so long! But here’s the chapter! Enjoy!
