Chapter 4 - Run!
“Son ova bitch! I can’t believe you!” Bakura yelled, running at full speed, right behind Marik. He glanced over his shoulder, then looked forward again, kicking himself mentally for ever listening to Marik.
“I swear, I didn’t know someone had called the cops before we got here!” Marik yelled back, scaling a fence with ease and landing on the other side, crouched, then taking off running again.
Bakura growled, jumping over the fence and rolling over onto his feet, continuing to follow the other yami. Why he ever took Marik seriously was beyond him. He should have known better. After all, anything the Egyptian yami was involved in always turned out bad for everyone that had the slightest connection to the situation.
They rounded a corner just as a gun shot was heard and a bullet whizzed by them. Yelling was heard from behind the fence, then it shook with the weight of more than one person climbing over it.
Marik ran two steps up the brick wall that was on the right of the alley they were in, then jumped off and grabbed a metal ladder hanging just in his reach. He pulled himself up, then swung his legs up after him. He climbed up the ladder and jumped onto a barred metal platform, then glanced down seeing Bakura mimic his movements.
“Faster!” Marik called to him and wrapped his fist in a cloth, then punched through a window. He reached in and unlocked it, shoving it up and climbing in.
Bakura swung himself over the railing of the platform and climbed in the window after Marik, “Do you even know where you’re going?”
“Yes,” Marik replied and opened a door, going out into a hall. He looked around, then started to run down the hall. He came to the end of it and opened a metal door and glanced behind him before starting up the stairs that were beyond the door.
Bakura ran to the closing door and shoved it open, running up the steps, skipping two each stride. He rounded a corner and started up another flight. He saw Marik shove through a door that obviously led to the outside. He ran through the door and took a quick look around. They were on the roof.
“Ishtar, what the hell are we doing on the roof?! Now, we’re trapped!” Bakura shouted at the other yami.
“Not if you can jump a good distance,” Marik smirked at him and moved his head to the roof of the building that was next door.
“You’ve got to be shitting me!” Bakura gaped, looking over the distance they would have to jump, “You fucking idiot! I knew I shouldn’t have followed you!”
“Well, now you’re stuck with me,” Marik blew him a kiss, then started to run across the roof. He used the ledge as his last step and grabbed onto the ledge of the other roof, his body slamming into the brick of the side of the building.
“Good Ra. Well, at least I’m already dead,” Bakura shook his head, then ran across the roof, jumping across the alleyway. His hands gripped the ledge of the other roof and locked on. He clinched his teeth and tightened his body up, trying to prepare himself for the pain to come.
His body slammed against the brick with a sickening thud. He scrambled up, pulling himself over the ledge and kicking his legs over, rolling over and landing on his back. He was momentarily winded, but he knew he couldn’t rest. He jumped up and ran to the middle of the roof where a door was. He opened it and jumped on the railing, sliding down and jumping off at the end, repeating the action down three more flights of stairs.
Landing finally on the bottom floor, he ran out of the exit door into a dark alley. He looked around, then jumped over another fence and made his way down and out of that alley. He stopped before he exited the alley and peered around the corner. Seeing that it was calm and quiet out in the streets, he causally walked out and straightened his clothes.
He stayed in the shadows most of the time, peering every which way for cops. He heard sirens down a way and jumped into an alley. He ducked behind a duster as the blue and red lights and loud siren went by at a high speed.
Bakura sighed with relief, then looked out before he left the alley. He shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked down the street. He tried to look as inconspicious as a guy with wild spikey hair and evil looking eyes as he could.
//Ryou?// he tried through the link and shook his head when a wave of intoxication hit him through the link, //Damn it, sober up!//
/Yami?/ Ryou giggled through the link, /Where’d ya go?/
//Ryou, I need you to listen to me,// Bakura said, trying to sound not pissed off, //Get Jonouchi and get him to come get me. I’m downtown now, but I’ll be in the park.//
/Okee dokee,/ Ryou replied, sounding more like an idiot than anything else.
Bakura ran his hands through his hair, then felt his jacket pocket for a pack of cigarettes. He thanked the gods when he pulled a half full pack out with a lighter inside of it. He pulled one out and lit it, taking in a long drag to calm his nerves.
/He’s coming, yami,/ Ryou spoke up, /So, where’d ya go?/
//I’ll explain later,// Bakura replied as he took another drag and turned a corner that headed to the park, //Go back to drinking.//
/Okay!/ Ryou piped, excitedly, and Bakura closed the link.
He couldn’t believe this. He was stuck on the other side of town, watching out for the cops, all thanks to Marik. And to top it off, he was freezing. He took another drag of his cigarette and let it out slowly, growling.
“When I get my hands on that son of.....” he grumbled, glaring at the ground. He kicked a rock off of the sidewalk as he entered the park and headed to a bench.
His head shot up as he heard “B.Y.O.B.” by System of a Down playing out of a car. He stared at the black car and recognized it as one of Kaiba’s expensive cars.
“Oh God....” he groaned and fell over on the bench to his side, “He’s the last person I need to see right now...”
“Thief!” the CEO called as he walked up to the bench that the spirit was laying on.
“What do you want?” Bakura sat up and glared at him.
“I’m here to pick you up,” Kaiba said, arrogantly, “Jonouchi called me. Now get in the car if you want a ride back to your place.”
Bakura eyed him suspiciously, “You’re picking me up? Shouldn’t you want something in return? I mean, you are a heartless bast-”
“Do you want a ride or not?!” Kaiba interrupted him, crossing his arms.
“Sure,” Bakura said with a hint of sarcasm, then got up and followed the CEO to the car. He got into the passenger seat and slammed the car door shut, relieved that inside the car was already heated.
Kaiba climbed into the driver’s seat and started the car, the middle of “B.Y.O.B.” playing. He cracked Bakura’s side’s window and took off down the street, “Throw out the cigarette now so all the heat isn’t sucked out.”
Bakura took a last drag and tossed the butt out of the window, it being rolled up as soon as his hand was away from it. He looked out the window for a little while, then looked around the car. His interest went to the stereo and he looked all over it, inspecting the expensive electronics.
“What are you doing up at this time of night?” Bakura asked, glancing at the man driving.
“What? You thought a heartless bastard like me sleeps?” Kaiba replied cooly, his eyes glued to the road.
Bakura let out a chuckle, “I was never sure.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Kaiba said after a moment of silence, then turned up the stereo.
“Cigaro” started playing and Bakura tried not to laughing, thinking of Marik. He knew the other yami loved that particular song. Thinking of Marik, his view on the yami suddenly changed as he recalled the recent events that happened on 20 minutes before.
“Why are you all the way on the other side of town this time of night?” Kaiba asked, noticing how the mood of the spirit had swiftly changed.
“A dumb mother fucker dragged me out here,” Bakura muttered, glaring out the window.
“Marik, I presume?”
“Who else?” Bakura growled, clenching his fists. He paused and mentally shook his head. He would NOT tell Seto Kaiba, of all people, what had happened. Hell, for all he knew, Kaiba would probably turn him in.
Kaiba let out a chuckle, then went quiet as he pressed on the gas. He sped down the empty roads and made it to Ryou’s in about 15 minutes. He stopped in front of the house by the sidewalk and looked at it, the party still going on.
“Thanks for the ride,” Bakura muttered as he got out of the car, slamming the door shut after him. He stalked up to the house and went in, looking around for Ryou.
Kaiba watched the dark spirit go in, then sighed and took off down the street.
“Bakura!” Ryou cried, jumping in the yami’s arms, “I missed you!”
“Uh... that’s nice, Ryou. Now, I need a drink,” Bakura hugged the man, then went for the kitchen. He grabbed the cooler off of the counter and sat down at the table and prepared himself for a long morning ahead of him.
