Chapter 4 (3 29)

The food was prepared by the time it was six. Yugi woke up his grandfather and they filled their plates. To keep the birthday man out of the prepared living room, they all convinced the older man to eat out under the stars on a blanket. He thought it was a great idea.

Yugi was an excellent cook, Seto admitted as he bit into a piece of crab sushi. The Motou made three types of sushi, chicken teriyaki, and tempura, with some help from Ryou, of course. Jou just cooked the rice.

They sat at the back of the cabin over by the cliff, watching the remaining orange glows of the sun disappear behind the water. There was just enough light to eat under, and they all talked about the good times, even when those who weren't there couldn't say much. Yami and Bakura didn't eat, of course, and Seto sat in silence as he listened intently to embarrassing stories of Yugi's childhood.

The CEO had done his best to ignore the Pharaoh until now. When Seto first saw him out of the Puzzle that evening, he just politely inclined his head. Yami responded, but that was it. The brunette began to ponder about it question earlier: would he seduce Yami just to get what he wanted?

It was driving him insane already to be around the Spirit. Sure, he was a little upset that he was cooped up in that damned triangle. However, it was a lot worse when Yami could be seen and touched. Anzu… oh, Anzu; if she valued her life, she would stay a safe distance away from Yami.

" Kaiba-kun, are you all right?"

Seto blinked and slightly shook his head. He looked up and saw that the attention of everyone was on him. Yugi's question still hung in the air, and Seto weakly smiled.

" I'm fine," he replied and ate another piece of sushi. The others looked unconvinced, but said nothing.

" I remember when Yug had a crush on that Sashaki girl," said Jou suddenly, laughing when Yugi turned beet red. " That was at freshman year, but Yugi was going gaga over her."

" Jou!" cried Yugi. " That's embarrassing!"

Jou chuckled. " I know. You would space out whenever you saw her."

Seto risked a glance at the Tomb Robber, who looked like he wanted to strangle someone whether it be Jou or Sashaki. The CEO smiled and shook his head.

" So!" countered Yugi. " I remember when you had a crush on Byun Kari!" He giggled like mad and Jou almost pounced on him. Ryou looked on.

" Kari?" the accented teen repeated, incredulous. " You mean the co-captain of the cheer leading squad? When was this?" Jou flushed and Yugi sat up straight.

" That was a little after school started this year," replied Yugi. " I wouldn't worry much, Ryou," he added cheerfully. Everyone sweat dropped.

" What about you, Yami?" asked Anzu, turning so sweet as she spoke to the Pharaoh. " Have you ever had a crush on anyone?" Seto rolled his eyes. She was obviously flirting with him.

Yami had his legs stretched out as he leaned on his elbows behind him. He glance up at the stars and held his gaze there for a while. Those crimson eyes grew hazy.

" I mean, you do have your memories back, right?" asked the girl, secretly hoping that the Pharaoh would say it was her in their past lives. She was his Healer, after all.

Yami didn't reply as his attention was still upwards. Everyone looked at him more thoughtfully as he stayed in that position for a while, probably reminiscing or trying to rack his brains for an answer. Yugi silently ' oh-ed' and continued to eat a bit sullenly. Bakura turned away from the Pharaoh, pain fleeting over his face for a brief moment.

Seto was curious, and he wondered if the silence meant that Yami was hurt in the past. Perhaps he had to leave his loved one when he was sealed in the Puzzle, or maybe he fell in love with a commoner and their love was forbidden. Perhaps she died of an illness. These thoughts made Seto feel pity towards his arch rival. Sure, he was hurt to know that someone was already there in his heart. It was just that… who was the lucky one? Was it someone in their group? Was it Anzu? The idea made his chest ache.

" Yami?" question Ryou, tilting his head. He glanced at his dark counter part, who shook his head and inwardly spoke to him. Ryou gasped, finally understanding, and looked away. Jou already knew, for he was the first to notice things, and he was Yugi's closest friend.

Sugoroku cleared his throat. " What's with all the silence?" he joked. " It was only a question."

Anzu pouted but said nothing. Maybe Yami wanted to tell her somewhere more private first before telling everyone else.

" Kaiba-kun," began Yugi. " did you ever like anyone?" All except Yami's attention zeroed in on Seto, and he unconsciously flushed at the attention.

" N-no," he replied, gazing down at his now empty plate. " Not that I know of."

" Uh, huh," agreed Jou sarcastically. " And I'm the King of England." Ryou nudged him.

" Cut it out, Jou," he whispered. The blonde shrugged.

" Ah, whatever. I still say he's gotta have liked SOME one."

Seto remained silent. He DOES like someone. He's probably in LOVE with someone. Admitting it was the hard part.

~~

It was late by the time Sugoroku opened his gifts. They already dug into the cake with the numerous candles on it. Most of the gifts were Egyptian items or artifacts and a watch. The old man gave everyone a hug, crying, and retired to his room. The teens were happy and still wired from the chocolate in the cake. It would be a long night.

" Yami," said Anzu, crossing her legs as she sat on the love seat. Yami was laying on half the couch with his legs over the armrest, and his head in Yugi's lap. Bakura sat beside Ryou in front of the fireplace, and Yugi and Jou and sat at the foot of Yami's side of the sofa. Seto reclined on the other love seat across from Anzu's, reading his book in the light from the fire place.

" You still never answered my question," said the girl. The Pharaoh opened his yes and looked up at the ceiling.

" There's really nothing to tell, Anzu," he replied. " I - never mind."

Anzu was at the edge of her seat, looking anxious. " You can tell us, you know," she persisted. " This person is worthy of your love, and of our friendship. Is she someone we know?"

Seto raised an eyebrow and looked at Yami. Yugi was looking down at him, as though speaking with him. The CEO felt sorry for the Pharaoh who was always being pestered by Anzu, and decided to bail him out. Besides, the brunette didn't want to know whom Yami loved. It was just… too much…

He put his book on the coffee table. " I'm going outside," he stated and stood. Everyone looked at him as though he was mad. " Anyone care to join me?" The room remained silent except for the crackling of the fire, and he shrugged, not really caring. " All right." The CEO walked to the back of the room, intending on leaving through the back.

" Wait! I want to go too," said Yugi. Yami lifted his upper half so the Hikari could get free and catch up to the tall brunette. " You can't go out by yourself." He grinned widely. Seto had a weak smile and opened the door for the smaller one.

" Thanks, I guess," said the CEO as Yugi stepped out. He looked back at the crowd. Bakura was glaring, Jou and Ryou were whispering, and Anzu was looking dreamily at Yami who was propped up on his elbows, looking out the door as though speaking to his other half. Seto rolled his eyes as the Tomb Robber looked like he wanted to kick the tall brunette and himself.

" Whatever," he stated, somewhat fed up that the Spirit didn't do anything about Yugi. Seto closed the door behind him and walked out to the grass were Yugi was already laying. He sat silently beside him as they both looked ahead over the horizon to the dark waves that could be distinguished against the lighter shaded sky. Stars sparkled as they sat there, both inwardly linking the diamonds to create figures in the atmosphere.

It was silent for a while before Yugi spoke up. " Kaiba-kun, why did you want to come outside?" he asked curiously, putting his hands behind his head. His wide eyes were still glued above.

the brunette shrugged and picked at the grass. " Fresh air," he replied nonchalantly, twirling a green - almost black- blade around his index finger. " Why did you join me?"

Yugi blinked and looked up into azure eyes. " As I said, you can't come out here alone. Besides, I like the sky at night. In the city, you really can't go star gazing." Those orbs flickered back to the sky, searching for the Big Dipper.

Seto looked ahead and saw the moon peer out from behind the clouds. It was at a crescent, the edges pointing to the left. It shone and created a circle around itself as though it's rays forced clouds around it to create a ring. He suddenly thought about the whole ' who did you like' questions back in the cottage. Yami did have his memories back now, right? His curiosity got the best of him.

" Yugi," he began a little uncertainly.

" Yes?" replied the boy, laying on his stomach and playing with the grass. Those amethyst eyes occasionally glanced up at him. " What's wrong?"

Seto shook his head, implying 'nothing', and trying to clear it. " I just have a question. Your Yami doesn't talk about his past life; why not?" There- but then he added: " Not that I really care."

Yugi frowned at the last sentence. " He doesn't like dwelling in the past. It's so different from now. He… can't live in a time that was already past. It's gone now, and he's letting it go." There was a sad gaze on the grass between Yugi's fingers, and it was Seto's turn to frown.

" Hn. I guess I don't understand," he stated truthfully, deciding to let the subject go. The smaller teen seemed to have other plans.

" We are all drawn in a circle," said the Motou, as though he couldn't contain himself any longer. " Believe it or not, but we were all actually someone else in Yami's time. Jou was a Healer; Ryou was a Mage; Anzu was a Spell Caster. I was… a slave. Pegasus was some power hungry Nobleman." He looked up into confused and surprised blue eyes. " And you, Yami said you were his High Priest."

Seto averted his gaze and looked instead at his outstretched legs. There was bind that drew them together - some power beyond them all that made sure that it stayed that way, that they would find each other again.

" Bakura, of course, was the Tomb Robber. Malik and Mariku were… Yami didn't want to tell me that." Yugi looked uncomfortable. " Mai was a Bandit." He shifted onto his back and sat up, sitting Indian style and brushing some stray dirt off his pants. " Everyone knew who they were five millennia ago." He turned to Seto, ashamed and apologetic. " Um, surprise?"

Seto wasn't paying much attention to the other. He was just wondering about how they could be in such close terms with each other yet seem to distant. Was he meant to stumble upon the Turtle Game Shop and this whole 'rival' ordeal with Yugi Motou and his Puzzle? How did it feel for Yami to have known someone one way, and then wake up a thousand years later to find them another way?

" Kaiba-kun, are you all right? I'm sorry, I shouldn't have burdened you -"

" It's all right, Yugi," cut in the CEO, flashing him a simple smile. Yugi seemed to brighten at it though, the light of it rivaling that of the moon's on this dark night. Seto was curious, though, and he dared to ask questions about himself back then. A High Priest, huh? Would he get his memories back too? " Will I remember?" he asked blandly as though he didn't care. Yugi's brows furrowed thoughtfully.

He was silent for a while. ' Probably conferring with his yami,' thought Seto. For some odd reason, a became jealous at their intimate relationship. They were close, sure, and he didn't accuse them of being lovers. Seto was just upset at the fact that Yugi could get into Yami's heart while he had to stay outside.

The small teen slowly met Seto's gaze. " Maybe…" he finally replied. " I mean… Jou's been getting flashbacks, so has Ryou. Malik got his a while back. Anzu claims to have some of her own. I have had - several."

The brunette nodded, a thought suddenly coming to his mind. Did his dreams of Yami have anything to do with having some of his OWN flashbacks? Dreams were something that your subconscious contained. Perhaps it was coming back to him in that form. But he was supposed to be the Pharaoh's High Priest. What else could he…? His eyes turned urgent.

" Yugi, is there anything else I sh kno know?" he asked. " Could Yami tell me more?"

Yugi looked uncertain, as though debating on an answer he should give the CEO.
