Chapter 3: Friends??

I'm been driving around Domino City for about an hour now. I feel a little better, but really,
I'm not. The fact that Seto will never return to me continues to haunt me, scare me. I have
to face that reality whether I want to or not.

As I pull into Kame Game Shop, Yuan runs out to greet me.

"Uncle Jou!" the peppy 4-year-old yells. He's so lucky that he's yet to understand the concept
of death.

"Daddy ask about you Uncle Jou. Where's Uncle Seto?"

"He's out of town." I say.

"Come on Uncle Jou! Daddy will be happy to see you!"

He grabs my hand and leads me into the living room.

"Yuan, wipe your feet!" says Anzu before she finally realizes I'm here.

"Jou...nouchi..." she says before embracing me tightly. "I'm so happy to see you! Are you
doing ok?"

"Hai. Much better. I'm still sad he's gone, but...Seto will always live in my heart."

She nods and smiles.

"Where's Yugi?"

"Yuan, go and locate your father."

"Hai, okaa-san."

I watch as he hops off the sofa and runs towards the Game Shop door.

"How is Mokuba doing?"

"He's making it day by day. He's still in recovery mode, but he has to run Kaiba Corp."

A moment or so later, the door to the shop opens and Yugi emerges, carrying Yuan.

"Jounouchi-kun!" he says before he puts Yuan down on the recliner. "I'm so glad to see
you out once again!"

We embrace each other before sitting on the sofa.

Please someone tell me how did I ever make it through the past week and a half. First of
all Kaiba hit on me and kissed me! Second, I punched him! Third, we somehow made it
through speech presentations.

Please, don't ask me how.

Since that day I punched him, he hasn't said a word to me. That is, outside of what we talked
about for speech. He hasn't even said a single insult. Did I hurt his feelings? I should apologize.

"Jounouchi? Jounouchi!" I turn around and see Honda standing behind me.

"What is it?"

"Rumor around school is that you punched Kaiba! How true is it?!"

Damn, who saw it?

"Umm...I'm still alive, aren't I?" I say laughing very nervously.

"Good point. Are you coming to movie nite?"

"Yea, I am. I almost forgot."

"Glad I reminded you Jou. And don't forget it's sports month, so bring a sport-themed movie."

"My turn to bring a movie?!"

"Yes! I got 'Remember the Titans' last week."

"Ok, I'll stop the video store on my way there. Look, I have to go. I'll catch up with you all
at 7 at Yugi's."

"Ok, see you later."

Now, where could Kaiba be? It's 1:30. Study hall. Library.

As I walk into the school library, I receive many shocked looks and blank stares. This isn't a
part of school I'm more likely to be seen in.

I spot Kaiba sitting in a far corner on a computer. He has a million of em at home and at work
I guess, so why is he using the one at school?

"Hey, Kaiba."

He look up from the screen at me.

"Hi."

"What are you doing?"

"You came all this way to ask me that? The library isn't one of your favorite places on campus."

"True, but I came to talk to you. To apologize."

"To me?"

"Yes."

"Ok then." he says placing his books into his bag. "Follow me."

I follow him upstairs to one of the study hall rooms. He sits at the table and I sit across from
him.

"So, what is it you want to talk to me about?"

"First, I wanted to apologize for what happened the other week. I didn't mean to punch you.
It was a natural reaction to the events..."

"You're forgiven."

That was easy.

"Next, I want to start over between us. We haven't always been on the same page."

"Are you finally admitting you like me?"

"No! Never! Look, Kaiba. We're graduating in a few more months. I feel we need to put
our differences aside and become friends."

I feel his leg rub against mine.

"Not those type of friends." I say moving my legs away from his.

We sit in awkward silence for a moment....

"So, aren't you supposed to start?" he asks.

"If you want me to." I reply.

He nods.

"My name is Katsuya Jounouchi, 16-years-old. I was born January 25. I'm the oldest of
two. I have a younger sister Shizuka. She's 14. My parents divorced when I was 10 and I
live with our father. Shizuka lives with our mother."

"Seto Kaiba, 16-years-old. I was born October 25. I'm the oldest of two. I have a younger
brother Mokuba, 11-years old. I, along with my brother are adopted. Our mother died
shortly after giving birth to Mokuba and our father died when I was 9. Mokuba and I lived
with an aunt and uncle who used up our inheritance money on themselves and then left
us at Tamashii Orphanage until we were adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba."

"Wait...I thought he was your biological father."

"Never! I have a step-brother Noa who's 18."

"Noa is Gozaburo's son right? Then how did you get control of Kaiba Corp? Shouldn't he
be the rightful heir?"

"Noa ran away a few years back, shortly after Gozaburo committed suicide. I know he's
still alive because every Christmas he sends a card and a picture of him."

"If you don't mind me asking...what is your true family name?"

He hesitates for a moment.

"You don't have to tell me..."

"Ashin." he says interrupting me. "Promise me you won't tell anyone that."

"I promise you."

He relaxes a bit more in his chair as a crooked smile appears on his lips.

"Tell me, Katsu-chan, what's the real reason you want to become friends?"

Huh...

"I...I don't know really. I've been asking myself that since I entered the library.
Besides, why are you calling me 'Katsu-chan'?"

"Because, you like it and it fits you."

Tsch. He wishes I like that 'pet name'.

"I would prefer if you called me either Jou, Jounouchi, or just Katsuya."

"Ok, Katsu-chan, you can call me Seto."

"Dammit that's not my name!"

He laughs a bit.

"What are you doing tonight?"

"Why..." I ask extremely hesitant to what could be going through his mind.

"Because, I want you to get to know me better." he smiles...a genuine smile...that's
scary coming from him. "Isn't that what friends do?"

"Yea...I can come around 9 after movie nite with the others."

Why am I accepting his invite now? Can't we just call each other on the phone?

"That's fine. I'll be waiting." he says standing up and handing me a small card.

I read it...

"Did you have this planned out?!"

"You can never be too prepared, Katsu-chan."

He kisses me on the cheek and quickly leaves. Guess he didn't enjoy my knuckles last
time.

"I'm so glad to see you Jounouchi!" says Yugi.

"Yuan is getting so big."

Yugi looks at his son and smiles.

"Yea. He is. There are times when he looks as innocent as me. Then other times, he has
the look and determination of Atemu. It's scary sometimes how he reminds me of myself
and my twin brother."

"Speaking of Atemu, where is he now?"

"Somewhere in America. His modeling career has skyrocketed and designers are literally
begging and bribing him to be in their shows and wear their clothing."

"Tomodachi..."

"Friend...yes, we are friends Jounouchi. But what's wrong?"

"Nothing. Well, I have to go now. You, Anzu, and Yuan take care."

"We will. You just take care of yourself Jounouchi. If you need anything at all, we'll
always be here for you."

"Arigatou, Yugi."

I leave their home and go...destination: unknown.
