Chapter 3: Graduation and Vacation
Kali sat on the bed watching Ryou check his graduation gown and smiled. "Papa, you look like a girl," she said. He chuckled. "Honey, everyone has to wear this tonight," he said. "And this funny looking hat?" she asked looking at the graduation cap. He laughed and nodded. "Hard to imagine, huh?" he asked. She nodded. He put the hat on her head and giggled at the sight. "You'll have to stay with Daddy though, remember?" he asked lifting her in his arms. She nodded. "We've been through this a hundred times," she said. "You can't count that far," he laughed. She stuck her tongue out at him and he raised an eyebrow. "All right," he said and sat down on the bed. "You're shaking, Papa," she noticed. "Papa's nervous about tonight," he said brushing some of her hair from her face. She buried her head in his chest and smiled. "I think you'll do great," she said. "My papa never gives up." He smiled and kissed her cheek. "Thanks, baby," he said. "That made my day." "I love you, Papa," she said hugging him. "I love you too," he said hugging her back.
That evening, Bakura fixed his tie and got Kali dressed in a purple dress with white tights and white buckle dress shoes. He then brushed her long hair and made it into a French braid tying it with a purple ribbon. "You ready to see Papa graduate high school?" he asked lifting her in his arms. She nodded grinning. "Did you pull your tooth?" he asked in confusion. She nodded proudly. "The Tooth Fairy left me a dollar," she said proudly. He smiled and kissed her cheek. "Let's go," he said. "You get to see where you'll be going to high school when you get old enough." She nodded and they left. Graduation didn't start for another hour, but students were already in the hallways talking and laughing. Bakura held Kali's hand firmly as they walked down the hallway. "Hey, you made it!" Yugi shouted running to them. Kali grinned and hugged him. "You're as pretty as a picture," he said lifting her in his arms. He had grown taller over the years and now could see Bakura eye to eye. "I'm surprised we're early," Bakura said. "Kali napped only an hour and I had to beg her to wear the dress, but other than that...we made it."
Yami walked to them dressed in a suit and tie as well. "Marik's whining because he claims the gown makes him look fat," he chuckled. "Malik's trying to calm him down. I'm surprised they ain't...you know." He said this to keep from Kali overhearing the word he wanted to use. Bakura got the message though. "They can do that after graduation," he said. "If you want us to watch Kal while you find Ryou, we will," Yami suggested. "Kaiba and Joey are overe there and we'll meet you by the bathroom." Bakura nodded looking relieved and walked off. Kali looked ready to turn the water works on then when Joey lifted her in his arms and kissed her cheek. "Wanna see where we'll be goin' tonight?" he asked. She nodded and they walked to where the stage was. "Mr. Wheeler, is that your child?" a teacher asked. "My niece," Joey said. "She's Bakura and Ryou's daughter." The man chuckled. "So this is the girl who kept Ryou on his feet," he said and smiled. Kali went into shy mode and buried her head in Joey's shoulder. "See ya later," Joey said and they walked to get some snacks. Kaiba got some punch and a cookie for Kali and sat her down in his lap.
"Here," he said breaking it in half. "I don't think Papa would kill me for half a cookie, would he?" He ate the other half and she ate hers before he gave her the punch. "You ready to see Papa walk that stage?" he asked. She nodded happily. "I can't wait to see you guys too," she said. Marik and Malik walked to them and Marik had calmed down a bit about the gown. "We have ten minutes, guys," he announced. "Tristan and Duke are still in the bathroom." Kaiba sighed. "Malik, bandana please," he said. "It's gonna take all of us to drag them out and we can't leave Kali unattended." Malik dug through his pocket and pulled out a red bandana. Kaiba fixed it and covered Kali's eyes with it tying it securely behind her head. "You know the deal, right?" he asked. She nodded. They did this if she had to go with one of her parents to the bathroom not at home and it was for her protection. He lifted her in his arms and they walked inside the men's room to find Tristan and Duke struggling to fix their hair and other things.
"You guys had over an hour to get ready," Yugi said seriously crossing his arms on his chest. "Can't help it," Tristan said. "Time is a virtue when you want to look good," Duke said adding gel to his hair. Kaiba looked at Yami and Joey nodding. The two got to work and dragged the two out of the bathroom whining because they weren't finished with their hair. Kaiba looked toward Kali. "You gotta go while we're here?" he asked. She nodded.
Ten minutes later, Kali sat on Bakura's lap watching her uncles and father walk to get their diplomas. "There's Papa!" she shouted happily and Bakura chuckled. "Yeah," he said. "There's Papa." After the ceremony, Bakura and Kali walked to them with Malik and Yami. "Congratulations, baby," he said hugging Ryou close. "Thanks, Kura," Ryou said smiling. "We need a group pic," Yami said trying to figure out the digital camera. He looked at Kaiba for some assistance. "Give me that, pharaoh," Kaiba said and fixed it for him. "Kali, come here," Ryou said holding his arms out and put the hat on her head again. "Smile for the camera." She grinned and the picture was taken.
Three weeks later, Bakura and Ryou were preparing for their trip to Egypt. Kali watched them without a word. "Kura, this damn thing won't shut!" Ryou groaned. "Let me try," Bakura said and fastened the suitcase closed. "We got ours," Marik announced holding up two backpacks. "You guys intend to wash clothes, right?" Ryou asked in shock. "Yes, Master," Malik said rolling his eyes. "We're not that stupid!" "Kali, are you done packing?" Bakura asked. "You did that for me, Daddy," she said seriously. "Daddy hasn't had much sleep," Marik chuckled. "He's been getting him some." Bakura threw a book at him and all three dodged it fast. "I sometimes wonder," Ryou sighed when they heard a car horn downstairs. "That's Kaiba and Joey," Bakura said. The group was going together instead of just Ryou, Bakura, and Kali.
Kali insisted on it being that way.
Joey walked inside and grabbed the bags. "Well, looks like Egypt's da first on my list of travels," he said happily. Ryou chuckled. "Well, you are the reincarnation of the head of the Royal Guards," he reminded the blond. "Ain't dat de truth!" Joey said grinning. "But Kaiba was still higher than you," Bakura added quickly. Kaiba burst into laughter when he saw the look on the pup's face. "Dat's not fair!" Joey whined. "How'd he get to be a High Priest?" "Luck I guess," Kaiba chuckled. Yami was asleep in his seat on the van and his head was in Yugi's lap while he slept against the window. Marik and Malik took the next seat and lifted Kali in between them. "Let's get your seatbelt on," Malik said and buckled her in while she clutched her toy cat she called Tomb Robber like her daddy. Ryou thought it was a rather cute tribute to Bakura, who just blushed at the comment.
Kaiba drove to Tristan and Duke's house to pick them up and then they headed for the airport. Duke unbuckled Kali out of her seatbelt and lifted her in his arms. "Someone's sleepy," he noticed as she rested her head on his shoulder. "Well, let her take a nap, Duke," Tristan said. "She's five years old." "Will be six during the vacation," Ryou corrected. "Oh yeah," Duke said and noticed Kali had fallen asleep finally. The group got on the plane and waited for takeoff. Kali rested her head in Duke's lap until he could unbuckle her seatbelt and lift her in his arms rocking her gently as she held Tomb Robber in her arms. Ryou fell asleep on Bakura's shoulder and Bakura rested his head on the side of the seat and fell out as well. It would be a long trip to Egypt...his homeland.
Six hours later, the group found themselves standing in Cairo. "Wow!" Kaiba said in shock. "This place is awesome!" "Tell me about it!" Yugi said grinning. "I wanna check out pyramids and stuff, Yami!" He was giving the former pharaoh's arm a workout by yanking it around hard. Yami winced and nodded. "Calm down, Aibou," he sighed. "We will soon. Right now, we need to find our hotel and get settled in." Malik and Marik served as interpreters for the group since they knew the language well. They had the biggest suite in the hotel thanks to Kaiba and Kali studied her room frowning. Bakura and Ryou walked in the room and put their stuff on the bed. "Come here, honey," Ryou said and lifted her in his arms. "Daddy and I decided to stay in here with you," he explained. "Is that all right with you?" She nodded resting her head on his shoulder. "It's getting close to her bedtime," Bakura sighed. "I'm glad we ate on the plane," Ryou said and began to undress his daughter so he could put her pajamas on. He then stood her up and fixed the pants to them and sighed.
"Give Daddy a kiss," Bakura said smiling. Kali smiled and did so hugging him as well. "I love you," he whispered. "I love you too," she said. Ryou smiled and kissed her cheek. "I love you, Papa," she said. "I love you too, baby," he said handing her Tomb Robber and smiled as he tucked her in. "We'll be back in a minute, ok?" She nodded and put her thumb in her mouth going to sleep. They left the room and sat down with their friends. "She's asleep?" Kaiba asked. Bakura nodded. "Good," Tristan said. "Trip like that could wear her out big time." Joey rested his head in Kaiba's lap. "So, what's de plans for tomorrow?" he asked. "Pyramids!" Yugi said happily. Yami frowned shaking his head. "I was hoping to visit Shadi," he said. "That ol' geezer?" Joey asked frowning. "That old geezer has gotten us out of some bad spills in the past," Duke reminded him. "He'd enjoy a visit from us." "Last word I got from him, he's got a kid of his own about Kali's age," Bakura said. "He took in a little baby girl and adopted her as his own." "Shadi?" Kaiba asked in shock. "That old fool wouldn't know the first thing about being a dad." "You'd be surprised," Ryou said.
"Then it's settled," Yami said yawning. "We'll see Shadi in the morning. Night, guys." He walked to his room with Yugi trailing behind. Kaiba yawned as well. "Come on, pup," he said. "Bedtime." "Right behind ya," Joey said and followed him to their room. "See you in the morning," Duke said dragging Tristan with him. Bakura looked at Ryou. "Bed, love?" he asked. Ryou yawned and nodded and they walked in their room each taking a different side beside Kali and soon everyone was asleep.
