Chapter 28

Rescue

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

As the horizon turned pink, Bakura led his group in through the north entrance of the city; Ahmose and Mikado were entering from the east, Seto was bringing in his group from the west, and Pegasus was coming in from the southwest entrance while Mai and Ishizu brought the Harpy Lady into port. Once in the city, the pirates scattered into groups of twos and threes, and wound their way through the streets towards the square… and the gallows. Once there, they all took up their positions. Malik and Mikado escorted Yugi up to the highest spot they could find, and there, Yugi readied his crossbow. Bakura leaned against a stone wall in shadows at the edge of the square. Ahmose brushed by calmly with a newly bought loaf of bread to not look suspicious, but when he brushed past, he slipped a piece of parchment into Bakura’s hand. The man waited a moment, then opened it and read.

‘They’re on they’re way.’ It simply said. Bakura tucked the paper away and raised his eyes, looking around. He finally spotted Otogi, and nodded. The young man returned the nod, then moved over to a large pole and began to climb it, finding a perch on the edge of a close roof top. Now everyone in the square could see him. For the townspeople he was someone looking for a good view of the execution; to the pirates, he was the warning signal that it was almost time.

Two sets of eyes narrowed as the door to the dungeon cell creaked open ominously, and the boy in Marik’s arms let out a small cry, then began to sob into the man’s chest, curling up tightly and shaking, gripping his shirt. The guards swarmed down the stairs and Yami stood calmly as he was seized, but Ryou shrieked in terror as he was torn from Marik’s protective embrace. But the man didn’t even fight to regain hold of Ryou; he knew it would be futile. He tried to call to Ryou, tell him to calm down and not fight, but every time he opened his mouth, the guards would cuff him and order him to be silent. Ryou’s pleas for help turned to cries of pain as the guards began to beat him for all the noise he was making. The three were dragged out of the dungeon and placed into the prison cart. Ryou was immediately back in Marik’s arms.

“Enjoy your last sunrise.” One of the soldiers sneered and Ryou hid his face in Marik’s chest as the cart lurched forwards and out into the streets, which were lined with people who began to shout and taunt the three prisoners, and fling things at them. Yami and Marik positioned their bodies to spare Ryou the physical assault, as there was no way to shield him from the verbal. The pair kept their focus on Ryou and away from the crowd, so they did not notice the attempts of the pirates to make contact and alert them to the rescue attempt.

And finally the cart entered the square. Marik and Yami stared grimly at the gallows, and Marik bowed his head over Ryou and whispered to him. “Shhh… it’s okay. We’re right here with you. We’re with you, Ryou… You did well.” Yami winced and helped Marik comfort Ryou. “You did what you set out to do. You protected Bakura. He will protect your friends. It’s all okay. Don’t be afraid. We’re right here with you.” Ryou curled up tighter.

“I don’t wanna die!” He whimpered. “I don’t wanna die!” The car pulled to a stop, and Marik cupped Ryou’s cheek in his palm and made the boy look him in the eye.

“It’s all okay. It won’t hurt. Be brave. Make… Make Bakura proud, little one.” He said softly, trying to keep himself under control. He nearly cried out loud when the soldiers pulled Ryou from his arms and dragged them from the cart, binding their hands before them.

Bakura narrowed his eyes and it was all he could do to stay where he was as he watched his best friends and his lover being dragged from the cart and up the steps to the platform. He watched Ryou turn pale and sway a bit when he found himself staring at the noose.

“I shall be merciful little one…” The executioner hissed in Ryou’s ear. “I shall let you die first…” Ryou nearly passed out in fear, and a moment later the crowd burst into hysterical laughter and cruel jeers when Ryou dropped to his knees and vomited. Marik fought back his own tears as he was prevented from going to Ryou. The noose was fit around his neck and a moment later, Yami was fit with a noose. Scoffing soldiers dragged Ryou to his feet, and the executioner fit the rope around the boy’s neck.

Bakura narrowed his eyes and watched the soldiers leave the scaffold; just what he had been waiting for. He needed them away from his defenseless friends before a move was made. He nodded to Otogi and began moving through the crowd. Otogi returned the nod and stood. And that was what the others had been waiting for.

All was quiet, and then a scream came up from the crowd as the executioner fell back, a crossbow bolt protruding from his throat. And all hell broke loose. Bakura pulled his katana and with a great battle cry, charged at the scaffold. Marik’s eyes widened.

“BAKURA!!!”

“Seto!” Yami cried as the man ran up the stairs after bashing the guards’ heads together and cut through the ropes of the nooses. He gave Ryou a shove forward and the boy toppled off of the gallows with a yelp, and fell into strong arms. Bakura gave a relieved sob and crushed the younger boy to his chest in a hug.

“Ryou! Oh, Ryou, my Ryou…” He set him down and in a sudden mood swing was shaking him. “What the hell possessed you to do that?!” He demanded. “You could have been killed! Are you mad?!” Ryou just stared at him, a dazed expression on his face, before throwing up again. Bakura yelped and leapt out of the way, then moved in and wrapped an arm around the boy. “Shhh… it’s okay… I’m here… I’m here…”

“GET DOWN!!!” Ahmose shouted, taking a flying leap and tackling Seto off of the gallows as arrows from soldiers flew over them. They landed on Marik and Yami.

“Boys! This is no time for that!” Pegasus scolded, and all four glared up at the man, who chuckled and turned, fighting off some guards. Seto and Ahmose quickly cut Marik and Yami loose of their bonds and offered them blades. By now, the pirates had fought their way to the gallows.

“Give us cover, Inarus!” Seto ordered, and Ahmose nodded, turning to the pirates.

“You heard him! GIVE THEM HELL!” He ordered, and the pirates obeyed. Ahmose, Mikado, Otogi, Jono, Tris, Seto and Pegasus all surrounded Yami, Marik, Bakura and Ryou and began making their way out of the square, and once they were out, they were joined by Malik and Yugi, who leapt into the arms of their lovers. Then they all headed for the port, Ahmose clearing a path, fighting like a ruthless demon and cutting down anyone and everyone who dared to cross him. The rest of the pirates followed in a long column of destruction for anyone who dared to challenge their progress. When a squad of soldiers appeared before the group, Ahmose sped up, his eyes glittering in a blood lust that made the soldiers hesitate.

“Cut them down!!” Pegasus howled, and Marik snatched one of Malik’s scimitars and let out a roar, following Ahmose. Malik swooned.

“Gods, I love him…” He sighed, and Yugi giggled, grabbing Malik’s hand and pulling him along.

“You can show him how much when we’re safely on the Black Magician!!!” He squeaked. Bakura and Ryou stumbled behind, Ryou still slightly in shock and unsteady on his feet. Bakura was worried as Ryou really didn’t look good at all.

“HREK!!!” Ryou choked out, falling backwards. Bakura whirled and snarled at the soldier who had seized the end of the rope that still hung around the boy’s neck. Seto ran up behind the man and seized his head. With a vicious jerk, he broke the man’s neck.

“Keep moving, Bakura!” He ordered and Bakura nodded, lifting the noose off of Ryou’s neck and pulling him up to his feet, then lifting him into his arms when the boy almost toppled right over again.

“Ryou, are you okay?” He asked, concerned. Ryou still looked ill, but he gulped and gave Bakura a small nod. Bakura smiled down at him as his boots hid the wood of the docks; they were almost there. He could see Mai and Ishizu waiting on the Harpie Lady waving them on, and then they were charging up the gang plank. The pirates from all five ships swarmed onto one, fighting back the soldiers, and the ship pulled away from the dock. Everyone was silent for a moment, and then the boat erupted into tumultuous cheers.

Yami and Yugi clung to each other, shouting in joy, and Marik completely swept Malik off of his feet and kissed him. Ahmose calmly cleaned his blade, trying to keep his expression emotionless as always, but a slight smile graced his features as an ecstatic Mikado leapt onto his back with a victorious whoop. Seto grinned as he hugged his brother and Otogi, and Rex, Weevil and Espa were shouting victory chants at the top of their lungs.

Bakura smiled and nuzzled Ryou, heading for the galley.

“C’mon…” He said softly. “Let’s get you something to drink. You don’t look so good.” Ryou looked up at him and offered him a brave smile.

“I don’t… feel so good…” He confessed in a whimper, before throwing up again all over himself, and Bakura.

Hi everyone! I’m back! So I can go back to updating on a regular basis! YAY!!! But first and foremost I want to apologize to all of my readers for my… bitchiness the last few updates and my whining about the lack of reviews I was getting. I honestly don’t know what got into me really. It was a very stressful semester and the end of the semester was awful. I was up to my ears in papers and exams and library books, and I just got a lot of joy from my reviews; they really make my day. ^_^ But my attitude was inexcusable, and I’m sorry. I don’t write for the reviews, I write because it’s something that I love to do, and I think I kind of lost sight of that. Plus I was spoiled by fanfiction.net where I got almost 800 reviews on one fic (Tearing Down the Sky). Obviously I don’t have nearly that many, but of course, this site has a smaller following. But it has a more mature and intelligent following. Anyway, I’m sorry to everyone. You guys are the best!!! And now, on into 2006 with my… less than PC fics, eh? ^_^
