Chapter 23
………………………………….
Bakura ran through the palace like a man running for his very life. He knocked people over right and left running for the royal suite tree. He burst out the doors of one tree, running across the walkway, ignoring the rain that was falling on the over hang with gentle soothing sounds. He burst through the door on the other side and ran to a door. He placed his palm on a scan panel, and a moment later the door opened. Bakura flew down the spiral stairs, passing his own bedroom and racing one floor down to the lowest room; his brothers’. He flung the door open and ran in. Across the room, Ryou jumped at the door slamming open and whirled. Bakura’s eyes widened, as did Ryou’s.
“Ryou…” Bakura gasped, and Ryou’s face split into a grin.
“BAKURA!!!” He cried, and ran across the room, flinging himself into his brother’s arms. Bakura let out a joyful sob and clutched Ryou to his chest, burying his face in the younger boy’s hair and crying. Ryou cried into Bakura’s shoulder, clinging to his brother as if they might be torn apart again at any moment.
“Ryou… oh Ryou… you’re safe… you’re okay… you’re home and you’re okay…”
“Yes, I’m fine! Oh, Bakura, I missed you so much!”
“Shhh… it’s okay now… you’re home safe, and Marik will never touch you again. Ever.” But at that, Ryou tensed and pulled away, making Bakura blink at him in confusion. “Ryou?”
“Marik! Oh, Bakura, he found me! He set me free! Where is he? I have to see him!” Bakura blinked again.
“What?”
“Where is Marik?” Ryou asked. Bakura frowned and stepped away from his brother.
“Why do you care, Ryou? He kidnapped you. He held you prisoner in his palace, AND in his mind!”
“He didn’t trap me in his mind on purpose! It was an accident! Bakura, where is he?!” Ryou cried, getting a bad feeling. Bakura turned his back.
“It would be best, Ryou, if you just… forgot about him.” He said, and Ryou’s blood ran cold.
“Why..? Bakura… where is he?” He gasped. “What did you do?!” Bakura whirled.
“I made sure that he would never touch you again!” He shouted, and Ryou paled.
~MARIK!!!~ He cried, turning away from Bakura. Bakura frowned.
“Why do you care?!” He shouted.
~Ryou!~ Marik cried back. ~Ryou, please! I don’t want to die! I love you! Oh, gods, Ryou! I love you! I love you!~ Ryou whirled and stared at Bakura.
“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?! WHERE IS HE?! DON’T LET HIM DIE!!!” He screamed, running to Bakura and grabbing his robes. “DON’T TAKE HIM FROM ME!! I LOVE HIM! BAKURA, I LOVE HIM!!!” Bakura stared at Ryou.
“You love him?” He gasped, and Ryou nodded, tears flooding down his face.
“I love him, Bakura. I love him more than anything! If he dies, I’ll….” And he turned and covered his face in his hands. Bakura watched him for a moment, watched him shaking and listened to his high pitched, frantic cries of fear. And he closed his eyes and opened his mind.
~Stop.~ He said, into the minds of the guards and medics. ~Release him, and bring him to Prince Ryou’s chambers. Now.~ And then he turned and pulled Ryou to him.
“If you love him… I will spare him.” He whispered, gently. Ryou looked up at Bakura with hopeful eyes.
“Really?” He gasped, and Bakura smiled and nodded, wiping Ryou’s tears away with his thumb. “Yes. I love you, Ryou. You’re my brother. All I want is to see you happy.” He said, and hugged Ryou tightly, rocking him back and forth. Ryou sniffled and smiled, relaxing in his brother’s arms as Bakura rubbed his back, knowing how to soothe his little brother. Then, the door opened, and guards marched Marik in.
“RYOU!” Marik cried, immediately struggling. Ryou whirled and his eyes lit up at the sight of Marik, and he pulled away from Bakura.
“Marik! Release him! MARIK!!” He cried, and the guards released Marik, who opened his arms to receive the Assyrian Prince. Ryou leapt into Marik’s arm and the Egyptonian flung him into the air and spun him around before bringing him into his chest and hugging him, tightly. Bakura watched with no expression as the two clung to each other, crying and laughing at the same time, and then Marik kissed Ryou. The guards mouths dropped open and Bakura scowled dangerously, but he watched as Ryou flung his arms around Marik’s neck and pressed in close. And his scowl faded.
~Leave. And be silent.~ Bakura told the guards. They bowed and left as Ryou and Marik parted. Marik gently set Ryou on his feet but did not let go. Bakura stared at Marik, having never seen such joy on the face of a man in his entire life… unless you counted the look on Ryou’s face. Ryou was glowing with happiness, the tears flowing down his cheeks as he reached up and gently stroked Marik’s gaunt cheek. And then, the smile faded.
“Marik…” He gasped. “What happened to you?” And he suddenly whirled and glared at Bakura.
“Hey! Don’t look at me like that!” Bakura cried, holding his hands up defensively.
“Easy there, killer.” Marik chuckled, placing his hands on Ryou’s shoulders. “I got sick… and the attempts to find you within my mind put a lot of strain on me. I know I’ve lost a lot of weight. Don’t get mad at your brother… a lot of it was just… me. I missed you...” Ryou turned and looked up at him.
“Marik…” He sighed, moving in and resting his head on Marik’s chest. Marik smiled and hugged him again. Bakura cleared his throat, and they both looked at him.
“Ryou… is this what you want?” He asked, and Ryou and Marik blinked. “Is… Marik who you… want?”
“I love him, Bakura. I want to spend my life with him.” Ryou said, and Bakura sighed and nodded, then looked at Marik.
“And… you?” He asked. Marik hugged Ryou close.
“Your brother is the best thing that ever happened to me, Emperor. And I will do anything to be with him.” Marik replied. Bakura nodded again.
“Then so be it. All I want is for Ryou to be happy. And if this is what it takes, then Marik, I release you. But if you hurt him…” And he let the threat hang.
“I won’t.” Marik said, firmly.
“When… when are you leaving?” Bakura asked. Marik blinked, and Ryou looked up at him.
“Leave?” Marik said, and looked down at Ryou.
“You have to go back. Your people need you.” Ryou said. Marik blinked and frowned, then sighed and shook his head.
“No they don’t.” He contradicted. “They have Malik. And Ishizu. And…” He shook his head. “Ryou… you belong with your brother. And… if Bakura will allow it… I would like to stay here on Assyria… with you.” Ryou’s eyes widened.
“You… you what?” He gasped, and Bakura stared, too.
“Ryou… I want to live here with you. This is your home. And… your brother needs you.” He looked at Bakura. “Emperor Bakura… I want to stay here. Where Ryou will be happy. Please… allow me to do this.” Bakura frowned for a moment. Then, he smiled slightly and bowed his head.
“Whatever Ryou wants.” He replied. “You once again relinquish your crown?”
“I do.” Marik said. “I would rather be with Ryou that rule my planet…” Bakura nodded.
“Well then… I suppose that we all have a trip to make.” The Emperor said, and Ryou and Marik blinked. “We must go to Egyptonia. You must officially step down, and announce your successor. And… they will have to be introduced to King Yami, Czar Seto, Ceasar Jounochi and Lord Otogi.” Marik blinked, then smiled and nodded.
“Thank you.” He said, and Bakura nodded, then approached him. And they clasped hands, making that moment on of the happiest in Ryou’s life.

review response to ZOE: lol.... no, I would not have written an angety ending if no one reviewed, I'm just a review hog. But as for your wondering why Yugi didn't teleport them out of the cell, here is the answer: Sumerian's can't poof themselves anywhere in the universe at will, there are limits as to their abilities. Yugi had three choices. A. teleport everyone out of the cell so they could get recapruted and yelled at, just to get stuck back in the cell again. B. teleport everyone into the vacuum of space. Hooray for death. C. stay put and wait to be rescued. Yugi picked C. He made the right choice. Don't you agree?
