Chapter 22
………………………………….
Marik sighed and lay back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He glanced at the window of his room and stared out at the rain. Two months… two months had passed since he had come to Assyria. Two months of the most experienced and powerful telepaths of the planet coming and demolishing their way through his mind, trying to find Ryou. Sometimes, Marik was sure that his mind would be destroyed, only to find that they were being careful not to damage his mind. They feared that if they damaged it, they would hurt the Prince who was imprisoned within. But the mental searches were taking their tolls on Marik.
A mere two weeks after being on the planet he came down with a violent illness, brought about from the cool temperatures of the planet and improper care. Bakura, fearing for his brother, had the best medics seeing to Marik, and had him moved out of the prison complex and to a guest suite of the palace, under heavy guard. The suite was nice, but Marik had not left it since he was placed there. But worst of all, he had seen neither Bakura, nor Ryou… or… his empty body, at least...
Marik rolled over onto his side and curled up, sniffling. His heart ached horribly every day, all day… he missed Ryou. He was miserable. He was separated from his brother, his sister, his people, his planet, and his lover. He was a prisoner, alone on a strange world. And only the thought that Ryou still lived within his mind kept him from ending his existence. Two months… it had felt like two decades. And in that moment, Marik cracked.
A scream of the agonizing pain of a lonely and broken heart echoed over the swamp and through the palace. Marik flung a side table into the wall, watching the elegant wood shatter. He whirled and a powerful telekinetic blast crushed the bed against the wall, and then the pieces flew in every direction, splinters lodging themselves into the walls and furniture. He whirled, eyes glowing, and completely demolished every last piece of furniture in the room. But he did not stop. He dropped to his knees, clutching his head, and the entire tree began to shake. Outside the rain stopped falling, but began to whirl around the tree, soon encasing it in a wall of water. The fruits on the vines that grew climbing the tree exploded, and Marik’s body left the floor. A sudden shockwave went out, and people a mile away felt it. Marik collapsed on the floor as palace guards ran in, blood tricking from his mouth, nose, eyes and ears.
“Oh my…” A guard gasped, and ran over. Marik’s eyes were open and staring, but they were glazed and unfocused. He knelt and felt for a pulse. “He’s alive…”
~*~
Marik found himself standing in darkness. He looked around. He had been here before… he was in his mind. He turned and found himself standing before a great wall with a thick door in it. Slowly, he approached it. He reached out and tried to open it, but it was locked. Marik frowned. Why would it be locked to him?
~Ryou?~ He called, softly, praying for an answer. But none came. He laid his palm on the door and moved it over the smooth metal. Then he laid his forehead against it, sniffling. ~Ryou, where are you? Please, Ryou. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t live without you. I love you Ryou. I love you. And… life isn’t worth living without you. Please, baby… come back to me… or at least… return to your body. Your brother needs you. He loves you.~ And then, the door slowly swung open. Marik blinked and looked up. All was dark through the doorway. He walked through, and the door and wall vanished behind him. ~Ryou?~ He called. He had finally made it to where he had been with Ryou when the boy entered his mind… and he wasn’t about to leave until he found him.
He began walking. For hours he walked, and every now and then, he would reach a door. He would then try to open it through telekinesis, and speak as if talking to Ryou, and eventually they all opened. But he had not come across a door for what felt like years to him. But there was something coming into view. The exhausted young man hurried towards it. Soon, it took on the shape of a silver cube. But as he drew nearer, he realized it to be a cage. And within the cage, bound in chains, was Ryou. His naked figure was suspended within the center, curled up into fetal position. Marik broke into a run, crying the boy’s name. But he got no response. He got to the cage and gripped the bars, staring through them at the unresponsive boy.
~Ryou!~ He called, desperately. ~Ryou, please! Wake up!!~ There was still no response. Marik slowly turned so his back was braced against the bars of the cage and slid to the ground, hiding his face in his knees. ~It… It’s okay, my love… I’m here… I’m here and I won’t leave you. Not again. Never again. I will not leave here until you wake up. Not until I set you free. I… I just wish that I knew how. But I don’t, Ryou. I’m no telepath. I’m a telekinetic… a useless former Pharaoh who can’t do anything right… Malik and Ishizu would both be a better ruler than I. I will die here on your world. And on mine, I will be forgotten… But I don’t care. All that matters to me is you, Ryou. I would do anything for you. I am living for you. You are the only reason I haven’t taken my own life by now. I… I just don’t care about living without you. Only the thought that I might get you back keeps me going. But… no matter what… the moment you said you loved me will be the most cherished moment of my life. I love you, and you made me the happiest man the universe ever has, and ever will see.~
For another few hours, Marik sat there and talked to Ryou. He talked about anything that came to mind. He told Ryou his life story… He told him old stories that he had been told when he was young, and tales of the superhero he made up when he was little, and would run around the palace dressed up as. He spoke of how he hated his studies, and drove his tutors insane, and how he would smack Malik around when they were kids, and how Ishizu always stepped in.
He told Ryou of the crush he had on the cook when he was seven, and his first wet dream. He told Ryou of the first time he had ever masturbated, and then how he lost his virginity to an older boy he had met in advanced telekinetic training, who happened to be Rishido. But that was the only time they had been together. He told Ryou of the first woman he had been with, and of his more memorable sexual escapades, and of the time he caught Malik in a secret passage jacking off and moaning the name of a noble’s daughter he happened to be watching through a peephole into a bathing room, where said girl was having a bath. He told Ryou how a guy was caught watching Ishizu undressing, and how he and Malik beat him up.
He told him of the death of his father, and his coronation. He told Ryou of his sister becoming a great diplomat, and ambassador. And he told Ryou how his father had wanted to become a great military power, and how he had made it happen. And how he hated himself for it. He told Ryou that it was all his fault that he had been captured. It was all his fault that he was tortured. And how far in love he had fallen for him. And he told him that he wished he had told Anak the translations of the Ancient Scriptures. For if he had done so, Ryou would not be trapped. He wished he had given up the secret… And the cage vanished and the chains fell. And Marik held Ryou in his arms.
~Ryou…~ Marik whispered, kissing him gently, and the boy stirred, uttering a tiny cooing moan. ~Wake up, little one… Come on…~ And his eyes opened.
~… M-Marik?~
~Yes!~ Marik gasped, excited. ~Yes, Ryou, it’s me! Are you okay? What happened?! What did I do?! How did I do it? Have you been asleep here the whole time? Where IS here?!~
~Stop! Stop stop stop! Slow down… I… oooh… I’m so tired… where am I?~
~Ryou… do… do you remember running away with Malik?~
~Malik?~ Ryou repeated, blinking and looking up at Marik, confused. Then, his eyes widened. ~MALIK! Oh! Marik! Is he alive?! Is he okay?! They didn’t kill him, did they?! Oh, please, Marik, tell me he’s alive!!!~
~Easy my love…~ Marik crooned, soothingly. ~Malik is fine. Do you remember where you are?~ Ryou blinked and slowly lifted his eyes, looking around at the darkness. Then, his eyes widened.
~You… you shut me in…~ He gasped. ~I entered your mind. And you dragged me into it and closed it up! You threw me into a mental prison! And wouldn’t let me out! And… AND LEFT!! YOU LEFT ME ALONE!!!~ And Ryou began to shake and stare at Marik with a look of fear and betrayal. Marik slowly nodded, and Ryou squirmed in his grip.
~Ryou. I am so, SO sorry… I… I don’t know how I did it. And I didn’t know how to get you out. Or even to find you. I… I’m so sorry, baby… Please… forgive me…~ Ryou blinked, then closed his eyes and draped his arms around Marik’s neck.
~I forgive you… I understand. You were hurt and scared… and I… I had you backed into a corner. I had no right to do what I did to you. What you did was an involuntary act of desperation. I do not blame you.~
~I love you…~ Marik breathed, cuddling and rocking him, gently.
~I love you too…~ Ryou sighed happily. ~Marik?~
~Yes?~
~How… how long has it been? How long have you kept me in here?~
~…. Two… two and half months, Ryou.~
~Two… oh my gosh… What happened?!~
~Anak is dead. Everyone is alive and well, and safe… but… Your brother arrested me. And I have been his prisoner.~
~Bakura… your mind is tired, Marik.~
~I have seen so many of your people who tried to break through my mind to find you, Ryou.~
~Oh, Marik… I’m so, so sorry…~
~Shhh… your brother misses you, Ryou. Your mind must leave mine.~ Ryou looked up and Marik and smiled, gently kissing him.
~I will see you soon…~ He said, then closed his eyes and faded from Marik’s arms.
~*~
Marik moaned and slowly opened his eyes. He heard gasps around him, and several people appeared in his line of vision. As his eyes cleared he recognized a few medics, a few guards, and, to his shock, Bakura.
“Marik?!” A medic gasped. “How do you feel?”
“Fuck that!” Bakura snapped, shoving the man aside. “What the hell did you do?! What happened?!?” Marik stared at him for a moment, and then his thin face split into a huge grin, and with a sob, he crushed Bakura to his chest in a huge hug. “HUURGH!! HEY!! OFF!! WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU, ARE YOU MAD?!” Marik released him and rubbed his eyes that were overflowing with tears. Bakura looked at him like he was crazy.
“I’m not mad…” Marik whimpered. “I’m happy!” Bakura slowly backed away. “It’s Ryou! I did it! He’s back! I found him, and I set him free!” Marik declared. Bakura blinked, then turned and closed his eyes and scanned for his brother’s mind. And to his shock, he picked up his brother’s thoughts.
~ -- do to my room?! It’s a mess! Is that… is that Bakura’s underwear? Oh, eeew!! It is!!! He left underwear in my room… he is SO gonna get an earful from me… ooh… I’m so stiff... am… am I in… GAAAH!!! I’M IN BAKURA’S UNDERWEAR!!!~ Bakura opened his eyes and whirled, staring at Marik.
“He’s…”
“He’s back!!” Marik exclaimed, and everyone looked at Bakura, who slowly nodded. Marik grinned. But a moment later, Bakura fixed a glare on Marik.
“Yes. He’s back. And I’m not loosing him again.” He snarled, and Marik blinked. Bakura looked at the guards. “Terminate him. Immediately.” And he turned and swept from the room leaving a stunned Marik behind.
“What? WHAT?!” Marik cried, leaping to his feet, but found himself being forced back onto the clinic table. The minds of the guards interfered with his powers and he found himself being restrained, and a moment later, one of the medics was filling a syringe…
