The Viking Brothers

Chapter 24: Brotherly Love

Yami waited in his room on the bed, his heart feeling like it was just ripped from his chest. Seto wouldn’t let him in to see Yugi. He couldn’t remember anything after he saw the arrow protruding from Yugi’s chest. Jou said he went ishocshock and they had to carry him back here. Seto was with the doctors and Jou was standing guard outside the door. He knew Seto wanted to keep him out of the room for good reason. He’d just be in their way, and if he wanted Yugi to survive, the doctors and Seto needed their space. Ryou came to see him early and gave him the latest update. Ryou saiat aat after he went into shock, Seto felt Yugi’s pulse and found out he was still breathing. That little fact gave him some hope, but not much. Why is it that when something good happens to him, it has to end badly? If it even ends, Ryou said Yugi might just live. But knowing Ryou, he just said that to make Yami feel better. A knock came at his door.

“Go away, I want to be alone.” The door opened anyway and Yami turned to yell at the person who dare disobey him, but stopped when he saw Marik standing the doorway. t, tt, that’s all he needs right now, Marik. “What do you want? I want to be alone.” Marik stepped in and closed the door.

“No, I don’t think you do.” Yami glared at him.

“Don’t start with me, Marik! I’m not in the mood!!” Marik walked over and sat down next to Yami on the bed, and Yami didn’t protest but just glared. “Any word on Yugi?” Marik sighed.

“Yeah, but not that much. Seto thinks the arrow missed his heart and otheran’san’s around that area. He said it might just be wedged in the muscle, and that gives Yugi a much better chance. But we don’t know for sure.” Yami sighed.

“I don’t know what I’d do if Yugi died...”

“Yami, if you want to cry, you can. I won’t tell, I promise.” Yami scoffed.

“I don’t trust you with that. Besides, what makes you think I want to cry?”

“I can hear it in your voice, it’s different. I think that’ll be best for you right now, Yami.” Yami chuckled sadly.

“It’s it a bit late for brotherly love? Is that was this is all about?” Marik sighed, Yami was so difficult sometimes.

“I’ve never seen you like this before, Yami, and...and it’s worrying me.” Yami looked at him in surprise.

“You’re worried about me?” Marik nodded with an angry blush.

“As much as I hate to admit it, yes. I know we’ve haven’t had a good sibling relationship, but better late than never.” Yami chuckled again.

“I don’t recall ever having a tender moment with all three of us together. It’s strange to start now.” Marik pinched him, making him yelp. “What the hell was that for!?”

“Of course we had a tender moment! Two actually!”

“No we didn’t.” Marik nodded.

“Yes we did! Remember the night mother died?”

“Oh great, go bring up mom now! As if I don’t have enough to be depressed about already!”

“Remember there was a horrid storm that night after she died and you, me, and Bakura all gathered in your bed? We slept peacefully together all though the night.” Yami smirked with a nod.

“Oh yeah, now I remember. What was the second time?” Marik rolled his eyes.

“When father died, you moron!” Yami scoffed.

“Father drunk himself to death.”

“Yeah, but it was only a few months after mother died, and we all stood on the cliff watching the burning ship fade into the fog?” [1] Yami frowned.

“Are you trying to make me feel worse?” Marik shook his head.

“No, I’m simply reminding you of our few tender moments. Why not make it a third one?”

“It just feels awkward, Marik. I don’t think I’ve ever even hugged you or Bakura once in my life.” Marik thought hard, then realized that they really hadn’t hugged before. Maybe a pat on the back or an arm around they shoulder, but nothing more. “Ye “Yeah, you’re right.” Marik reached his arms out and suddenly brought Yami into a tight embrace. Yami tired to pull away but Marik held fast. “There, now we did.”

“Let go of me at once!”

“You need to be hugged more than any of us, Yami. Just give in, I won’t tell.” Yami hesitantly wrapped his arms around Marik’s waist. It wasn’t so bad, he actually felt a tad bit better. Marik was squeezing him a bit to tight and a sudden memory of Smoky the cat popped into his head.

“Let up a bit on the hug!”

“Oh, sorry.” Marik loosened his grip and Yami took a gulp of air. He thought he’d be going the same way as Smoky! “Feel better?”

“A little, but it doesn’t change the situation any.”

“But it helps.” Yami looked up at him, confusion written all over his face.

“Why are you suddenly so...emotional?”

“Well, I wondered how I would be if it were Malik in Yugi’s position, and I knew I would need comfort. My relationship with Malik is the same as yours with Yugi, so I can only imagine what you are going through. Bakura doesn’t understand this feeling like we do, so he won’t be of any use for comfort.” Yami chuckled.

“I don’t know about that. He’s changed a bit since Ryou came around.”

“But he’s still sleeping around. Have you noticed that I stopped that?”

“I figured you did when I noticed most of the servants were walking correctly, and that was unusual here.” Marik chuckled and patted Yami’s back.

“Maybe he’ll come around, Bakura is one strange person.”

“They aren’t listening.” Marik looked down at Yami in confusion.

“What?”

“They aren’t listening to me.” Marik let go of Yami who had that same pout on again.

“Who isn’t?”

“The gods. I’ve been praying every second of this day for Yugi to come back to me, but it’s not working. Why aren’t they aning ing my prayers? Have I done something to anger them? Is Odin punishing me for some wrong I did? Was that why Yugi was struck down by that arrow? Or was it meant for me? I have all these questions, Marik, but no one to answer them.” He looked down at his hands. “I feel so helpless.” Marik crossed his arms and sighed.

“Well, maybe it’s because Yugi is English.”

“Come again?” Yami asked, looking up from his hands.

“You know how picky Odin and the others are. Maybe they can’t answer your prayers because Yugi isn’t a Norsemen. Yugi is STILL attached to his Christian religion, Yami. He may have excepted our way of marriage, but in his religion, I know it’s something different. He just went along with it because it made you happy. That’s what Malik told me.” Yami growled.

“Why didn’t Yugi just tell me that and I would have set up for two wedding ceremonies! One with our culture and one with his. Damn it, I have to explain to that boy that he can’t just give in to everything I say to make me happy! I want him to voice his own opinions and ideas! He’s to kind hearted, and I can’t be mad at him for that. Damn, why does everything have to be so hard!” He rest his head in his hands. “You know, Marik, I’m actually scared. I fear for Yugi’s life, and I’m all alone in this fear. The gods deserted me.”
“Well, there is one god whom you haven’t prayed to. HE might just be able to help.” Yami shot up strait and looked at his brother.

“Who?!”

“Pray to that Christian god of Yugi’s. I think you’re asking the wrong guys on this one.”

“But, how do you pray to a god with no name?” Marik shook his shoulders.

“Beats me. All I kns ths that Bakura told me that Ryou says his “prayers” before he goes to bed. It wouldn’t hurt to try.” Yami sighed and stood up from the chest.

“You know, I think I’ve given up all hope on faith. Maybe there is no one listening, and we’re all just fooling ourselves in believing so.”

“You’re upset now, Yami, and don’t know what you are saying.”

“I just don’t know anymore. I’m going to go take a walk, see ya around.” Marik watched as his brother left the room and shook hisd. Wd. Well, he tried.

In the doctor’s room:

Unfortunately, the two doctors they had were in town treating a disease that was going around, leaving only Seto with the knowledge to save Yugi. Only Ryou and Malik were present in the room along with Seto. Seto had sent Jou and Tristan back to their post, saying that they would only be in the way. Ryou sat by the bed and gently stroked Yugi’s hand, trying to stir a reaction from his friend while Malik held the candle close to the arrow wound, giving Seto more light.

With steady hands and a careful eye, Seto gently pulled the arrow from Yugi’s flesh. Ryou quickly grabbed a rag and covered the wound incase any blood started to pour. Seto studied the tip and smiled when he saw that the tip wasn’t poisoned, which would make his job hell of a lot easier. Seto told Ryou to dip the rag in the warm water and hold it on the wound until he could get sti stitching needle ready. Ryou did as he was told and gently lapped the wound a bit with the dampened rag before placing it over Yugi’s wound. Suddenly, Malik broke the silence.

“Seto, did the arrow hit anything important?” Seto shook his head as he threaded th needle.

“No it didn’t, which almost seems impossible. Just a few more inches to the right and it would have pierced his heart. He’s a very lucky little guy.”

“Will he make it, Seto?” Ryou asked, his voice wavering with sadness for any bad news.

“Well, I’m not quite sure. The arrow hit pretty deep, but if I stitch it up, he should be fine.” Malik and Ryou both gave a sigh of relief.

“Wow, that’s good news!” Malik said as he and Ryou exchanged smiles.

“Don’t go getting all excited just yet.” they turned to Seto with worried frowns. “Most of it will be up to Yugi himself. Once I get this wound stitched up, then it’s all in fates hands. Hopefully, Yugi is strong enough to pull though himself.”

“Is there anything we could do to help?” Ryou asked.

“He’s unconscience now, but the only thing we could do is keep talking to him. If we talk to him and encourage him to come back, it might just work. I’m afraid that’s all we can do right now.”

Keith’s Castle:

Keith waited patiently as Duke finished putting his hair up. He made sure that Duke looked his best, dressed in the finest linens and silver jewelry. If he was going to make the other lords jealous, then Duke had to look in tip top shape. All the lords were already down at breakfast waiting for them, he wanted to make an entrance. Finally, Duke turned to him, signaling that he was ready.

“We can go now.”

“Lets review one more time.” Duke sighed.

“Okay.”

“Repeat back to me how you should be today.”

“Do not speak unless spoken to.” Keith nodded.

“Good, go on.”

“Show affection towards you, say only good things about you if asked, don’t eat anything, and be happy, no frowning.”

“What else are you forgetting?”

“When you squeeze my hand that means I stepped out of line, when you kick me under the table that means you want to talk to me privately and I say I’m not feeling well at the moment.”

“Very good, you learn fast. Let’s go then.”

Keith held out his arm and Duke took it. Keith led him through the castle and into the courtroom. Duke looked around at all the men eating, drinking, and fighting with each other and frowned. Vikings were disgusting. Keith led him up the dais steps where a group of four beastly men sat at the table. Damn, was any man in Norway NOT beastly looking?! No wonder the English feared them. Like Keith said, he kept a gentle smile on his face and hugged his arm as he led him to their chairs. He could feel the eyes he mhe men directly on him and it made him feel uneasy, but kept smiling! Keith pulled out the chair and Duke sat gingerly on it, letting Keith push it in for him. He dt ret really like the fact that he was being treated like a woman, but he didn’t dare say anything.

“Good morning gentlemen.” Keith said as he sat down.

“Cut the formals Keith and introduce us to that hot piece of ass next to you!” Duke wanted to throw the man a glare but he controlled himself.

“This is my “wife”, Duke.” One of the men winked at him.

“Pleasure to meet you, Duke.”

“Likewise, good sir.” Duke said with a forced smile.

“So Keith, what made your dick point to an Englishman?” Before Keith could answer, one man did already.

“That’s an obvious answer! The kid’s ass-banging hot!” Duke wondered briefly if “ass-banging” could be a real word. Anotman man smirked at Duke.

“Lets let Duke answer that one!” Damn, he hoped they wouldn’t have gone theHe hHe had to think of something fast that Keith won’t pound him about later! Should he tell the truth about the accident? Or should he just make something up?

“No,l anl answer that one.” Duke gave a mental sigh of relief as Keith took the question into his own hands. “I was visiting my dear cousin Yami when I noticed, or rather Duke, noticed me. It must have been love at first sight for him because he couldn’t keep his hands or eyes off me!” It took all of Duke’s willpower to keep a strait face. How DARE Keith make him out to be a whore! He actually felt sick in his stomach also due to those words.

“Quite the wanton wench you got there, Keith.” said one of the man.

“Yeah, how’s he in the sack? I’ve always wondered how the English are in that department.” That was the last straw, he couldn’t take it! How dare they talk about him as if he weren’t even here! It’s harassment!

“Oh yeah, well this wanton wench is getting ready to shove his English foot right up your ass!!” Duke’s hands flew to his mouth, he couldn’t believe he had just said that out loud! Keith was going to beat him for sure now! Keith squeezed his hand hard under the table and Duke could actually feel his bones grinding together. But strangely, the men started laughing.

“This kid’s quite a spit fire, ain’t he!” One said

“Yeah, he’s got spirit! No wonder you married him, Keith! He’s a challenge for you!” Keith snorted.

“No one is a challenge me! me!” Keith kicked Duke under table.

“Please excuse me gentlemen, but I suddenly don’t feel all that well. Will you excuse me, good sirs?” They nodded as Keith helped Duke stand up, trying to add to the fact that he was “sick”.

“I’ll be right back, I’m going to let him lie down for awhile.”

“Aw, but we didn’t even get a chance to talk to him!” one man said and the others all nodded in agreement.

“I’m sorry, but my “wife” said he’s not feeling well and I don’t want him to come down with something. I’ll be right back.”

Duke tred asd as Keith slowly led him out of the room, but suddenly jerked his arm when they were away from the men. Keith pulled him all the way up to his chamber and threw Duke into the room. Duke backed up away from Keith knowing he was going to hit or beat. But the blows never came.

“You just lost your privilege of leaving this room. Now you have to remain in here until I need you again. Which probably won’t be until the games.”

“Games?” Duke asked, relieved that he wasn’t going to get smacked around.

“The Norse lords hold an annual festivals. Is. Is. I have to attend, and you will too, but it’s not for a couple of weeks yet.” Duke gasped.

“That means I’m to stay in here for a couple of weeks!?” Keith crossed his arms and nodded.

“Damn strait. You disobeyed my orders! I don’t ask you to do a damn thing, Duke! Telling you how to behave doesn’t count! If you piss me off enough, I can put you to actual hard work.” His eyes narrowed “And it won’t be easy, believe me. I’ll have more books from the library sent up daily and food will be given to you I d I do say so myself, I could be treating you hell of a lot worse, so you better count your blessings!”

Duke knew the truth in those words. He’d better stick to Seto’s advice and just swallow his pride, try to keep himself in control. He had to put on an act for Keith. He had to pretend to like, or even love him. As much as that thought made his skin crawl, he had no other choice. Best to just lie about everything and force tears. Which surprisingly he did. He wasn’t sure if they were real or fake, but he used it to his advantage and suddenly ran to Keith. He jumped into Keith’s arms and held onto him tight.

“What the hell-?”

“I’m so sorry, Keith! I shouldn’t have said what I did! Please forgive me! I’ve been trying to hide it, but I just can’t hide the fact that I’m scared!” oo, good words on his parts “I can’t remember anything before the accident! I only remember a bit, but that’s all! I’m in a ste nee new world and locked up inside a cage like a bird! I only know how to be an outlaw, I don’t know any other way! Please, please just try to be patient with me! I’ll try really hard, Keith, I will!”

“What’s gotten into you all of a sudden?” Duke pretended to sniff.

“I’m scared, Keith...will...will you lay with me for awhile? Please?” Keith wasn’t expecting this sudden reaction from Duke; it threw him off.

“Uh, well...I have the guys downstairs, and-“ Duke grabbed his face “lovingly” and put on his best pout.

“Please? Only for a little bit...just a bit?” No one had ever begged him before, not like Duke was doing right now. The sudden change of heart and tears really stumped him. He didn’t know how to react. The first instinct was to just give in and lay with him, but the other side of him said forget it. But, no one has ever begged to him, and he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“O-okay.” Duke pulled him over to the bed and plopped himself down on it. Keith laid back oe bee bed and let Duke cuddle up against him. Duke propped his head under Keith’s chin and smirked evilly. That was easier than he thought! If he could manipulate Keith, a stubborn jackass, then imagine what he could do to Tristan! The image of Tristan dressed as a servant fanning him as he sat on a throne, dressed like a king popped in his head. The thought made his smirk turn into a smile.

Bakura strolled down the hall, heading to the courtroom to snag some ale. It had been a crazy day and he needed a drink. He and his men had searched most of the woods but came up with nothing. Whoever shot that arrow is a master of stealth. As he entered the courtroom, he noticed a patch of multi colored hair sprouting from the dais table. He sighed when he realized it was Yami, who obviously had drunk himself to sleep.

Bakura walked up the dais steps and whistled low as he noticed all the empty ale jugs and goblets. He didn’t blame Yami for being drunk though, he had a horrible day. With little Yugi between life and death it’s no wonder he decided to drink. He would probably do the same too. Reaching across the table he picked up an empty jug of ale and suddenly smashed it into a hundred pieces right next to Yami’s ear. Yami shot his head up from the table, his eye wide but then drooped.

“Oh, you’re still alive. For a second there I thought history was repeating itself.”

“Huh?” Yami asked as he hiccuped. “How’s Yugi?”

“Last I heard, Seto had the wound all stitched up and Yugi’s breathing was back to normal, but he hasn’t woken up yet.” Yami tried to stand up but staggered, falling into Bakura’s arms.

“Take me to ‘im” *hic* Bakura wrapped Yami’s arm around his shoulder.

“Damn, the ale has you fucked up, Yami. I’ve never seen you like this before.”

“Take me to Yugi!”

“Alright already!” He yelled “There’s no need to shout!”

‘Where am I?’ Yugi asked out loud to himself. Everything around him was pitch black, no breeze, chill, or sound. Just darkness. ‘Hello?! Is anyone there?!’ he shouted, but no answer echoed back. ‘What is this place? I’m scared...I want Yami!” he started to cry realizing he was alone. He wanted Yami with him right now. ‘Yami...’

‘...ugi’ Yugi gasped and looked around, hearing the sudden sound. ‘Yugi...’

‘Yami, is that you!?’ Yugi looked up and saw a very dim oval shaped cloud, and darkened figures looming over. He couldn’t make out who or what they were, but they were saying his name.

‘Yugi, wake up!’ That sounded like Malik!!

‘Please Yugi, open your eyes.’ that had to be Ryou! And the dark shapes up there must be their bodies!
‘But I can’t...I don’t know where I am. How do I wake myself up? Why am I sleeping in the first place? Suddenly, Ryou and Malik stopped talking, and another voice was heard.

‘You two, out! It’s Yami’s time now.’

‘YAMI!!” Yugi shouted o tho the cloud. He saw Ryou and Malik walk away and a new dark figure came into his line of vision. He’d recognize Yami’s hair anywhere! Yami was with him!! ‘Yami, I’m here!! YAMI!!” Yugi waved his arms and jumped up and down, hoping Yami would see him.

‘Yugi...*hic* wake ups-“ Yugi frowned when he heard Yami’s slurred voice. Great, he was drunk! ‘Come ‘ack Yugi...come back to *hic* me...!”

‘I have to wake up! For Yami! He needs me!” Yugi began pinching himself in hopes of waking himself up. ‘Come on!! Why can’t I wake up!! I don’t want Yami to be sad!!

‘Hey, Christian god!’ Yugi stopped in his attempts when he heard Yami speak. ‘If you *hic* if you’re as merciful and caring as Yugi says, then please, bring *hic* bring him back. I *hic* I’m begging you, bring him back to me...plea-“ the alcohol finally took its tole and Yami passed out on the bed.

‘Yami misses me so much he even went as far as to pray to another god. I have to wake up, for Yami’s sake.’ Yugi closed his eyes and tried to focus his mind on waking up so he could be with his husband. ‘Come on Yugi!! Wake yourself up!!’

Keith’s castle

“Did you succeed in your mission?” Pegasus asked the assassin who was kneeled in front of him.

“Yes My Lord, I did away with Yami’s English whore.” Pegasus smirked.

“Very well done. As I promised, you’ll be handsomely rewarded. You are dismissed.” The man stood up.

“Thank you sir.” as the man was leaving, Keith entered Pegasus’s room, watching the assassin with a curious eye.

“Yo Peg, what’s up with him?” Pegasus twirled his wine around in his glass.

“He succeeded in killing off Little Yugi, which would now bring Yami into depression. The plan is going smoothly.” Keith crossed his arms and glared at his uncle.

“What did you call me here for? I don’t enjoy feeling like a servant in my own home! I was busy with Duke!” Pegasus chuckled.

“I want to show you something.”

“Couldn’t it have waited until tomorrow?” Pegasus shook his head and stood up from his chair.

“Come with me to the barracks and I’ll show you my newest addition to our plan.”

Keith followed Pegasus outside to the barracks, wondering what it was that his uncle had to immediately show him. When they got to the barracks, Keith noticed that all his men were outside, sitting and talking. Usually, they were inside at night, fighting and drinking. Pegasus opened the barrack doors and they both stepped inside.

“Feast your eyes on our two new warriors, Sigal and Thorn.” Keith’s eyes widened as he took in the two warriors. They were about as big as Marik, and just as muscular. The one on the right had sandy blonde hair and dark brown eyes while the other had black hair and one blue eye. The other eye was missing, and the man had numerous scares on his body. They both wore smug looks, and carried around what looked like an armory. They had weapons of all kinds, it was actually kind of scary. You wouldn’t want to meet these guys in a dark ally. But, they really just ignored them.

“So, where’d you find them?”

“I have my ways.” Keith rolled his eyes. “I figured since Marik and Bakura are such extraordinary warriors, they should have someone to fight on their own level. And these two men had never lost a fight. What do you th” Ke” Keith smirked.

“Nice addition. I would LOVE to see Marik eat some dirt for a change!!” Pegasus patted him on the back.

“Don’t worry, you’ll get your wish.”

“How much are you paying them?” Pegasus smirked evilly.

“I’m not paying them in money, if that’s what you think.” Keith raised an eyebrow.

“What? How are you paying them?” Keith noticed Pegasus had a little twinkle in his eye.

“Well, last year at the games, these two gentlemen had their eye our cur cousin, Bakura. So, if they help me seize the castle, I’ll let them have Bakura in whatever way they wish. That’s their payment.” Keith nodded.

“I wasn’t expecting that at all. Well, now both Marik and Bakura are getting what they deserve.”

End chapter 24

[1] When an honorable Viking warrior died, the body was laid to rest on a long boat with personal treasures and other objects that belonged to the warrior. Then they would set fire to the ship and push it out to sea.
