Chapter 21

“Marik, you can’t!!” Malik cried, shaking his head. Marik smiled at his little brother, gently petting his hair.
“I have to go, Malik. I… I just feel that I owe it to Bakura… and Ryou.” He said. “You have to go home to Egyptonia.”
“I don’t want to go back without you, Marik!” Malik cried, tears flooding his eyes. “You can’t leave us, you are our Pharaoh!”
“Not any more, Malik. I gave up my crown.”
“But then… w-what… what am I supposed to do?” Malik whimpered.
“Go home. And take my place.” Marik said, kissing Malik’s forehead. “I love you Malik.”
“MARIK!” Malik cried, as his brother turned and left the clinic where the Prince rested. Yami and Yugi glanced at each other and Seto was glaring at Bakura, who stood in a long black cloak, Ryou resting in his arms. Bakura glared at Marik, who had his hands bound before him, then turned and stepped onto the small transport that would take him back to the Assyrian Flagship. Marik bowed his head and followed, Malik’s wails following him until the transport’s rockets fired. Bakura stared at Marik the entire trip between the flagships. When the transport docked soldiers swarmed on board, taking Marik into custody and escorting him to the holding cells.
“Emperor Bakura!” A man cried, running over.
“Pegasus.” Bakura said, in greeting.
“What… what happened to Prince Ryou?” Pegasus gasped. Bakura looked at Pegasus.
“This is what I have summoned you for.” Bakura said softly, and walked down the hall, still carefully carrying his brother. “Ryou was forced into reading Marik’s mind. And had to go… deep. And Marik trapped him. He closed his mind upon Ryou.” Pegasus’ eyes widened.
“Ryou’s mind has been imprisoned within Marik’s?!”
“Yes. And Marik can’t release him… he… he doesn’t even know how he trapped him in the first place.” Bakura reached the door to the royal suites and entered, heading for Ryou’s room. He opened the door and walked in, resting Ryou in his Nest and tucking him in. “I want you to get into Marik’s mind. And free my brother.” Pegasus nodded.
“I will attempt to do so, Emperor. But… I must be honest. Do not get your hopes up, my Lord. What you ask may not be… possible.” Bakura bowed his head, nodding.
“… I know.” He whispered. Pegasus bowed, then left. He moved through the ship as it turned about and headed home, to Assyria, and soon arrived in the brig. He moved along the hall of cells until he reached the single cell that was occupied. He keyed in the code on the door, which slid open.
Marik was sitting on the bed against the wall hiding his face in his knees, which he was hugging to his chest. When the door opened, he slowly lifted his face and looked at the tall Assyrian in the doorway. Pegasus entered.
“Marik.” He said, and Marik nodded. “I am Pegasus. Emperor Bakura has charged me with the task of freeing his brother from your mind… at all costs.” Marik nodded.
“Please…” He said, softly. “Release him.” And he unfolded from his huddled position.
Minutes later, the lower levels of the ship echoed with the agonized screams of Marik as Pegasus showed him no mercy, trying to break through his mind to get to Ryou.

Bakura looked up when a weary Pegasus entered.
“Well?” He asked, softly. Pegasus shook his head.
“I could not find your brother.” He said, softly. “Not a trace. Marik has locked the depths of his mind tighter than I have ever seen mental defenses. And I tried to break through but…” he shook his head. Bakura turned away, looking ready to cry again. He reached out and stroked Ryou’s hair.

Marik looked up when the door to his cell opened for the… okay, so he had lost count of how many times it had opened. All he knew was that he would rather die than try to endure another session of Pegasus trying to get Ryou free. But Marik loved Ryou. And he would not give up. But it wasn’t Pegasus who entered, it was several guards.
“Egyptonian Marik, you are to be shuttled to the surface of the planet immediately.” The first guard said, and Marik blinked.
“The… planet?” He asked, standing. The guard nodded and Marik was seized and marched from the brig. He found himself at a transport, and staring at Bakura’s back. And once again, Ryou was limp in his arms. Marik stared at the Assyrian Prince with a deep sadness that filled his entire being. He suddenly walked closer to Bakura, and the guards grabbed him, dragging him back. Bakura turned to see what was going on, and stared at Marik, eyes wide. The former Pharaoh’s eyes were wide and bloodshot with dark circles under them, and his face was guant. He was staring at Ryou with an almost frantic look on his face. Bakura clutched his brother closer, and backed away from Marik, glaring. Then he turned and boarded the transport.
“P-Please…” Marik begged as he was dragged on behind the Emperor. “Just… just let me see him!”
“You have seen too much of him in my opinion!” Bakura snapped, moving to a seat as far from Marik as he could. “And you still have him! This is nothing but a shell!” And he looked down at his brother’s body. “This is only his body! His mind, his soul, is not here! And I want it to be put back where it belongs!!! And until it is… you will suffer.” The trip to the surface of Assyria was silent, but a bit bumpy when they entered the stormy atmosphere. The landing was smooth and Marik looked around with wide eyes as they disembarked. The planet was dark and cool, and the rain fell in a steady sheet. Massive trees that Marik didn’t think were possible made up a great city of lights in the darkness. He was boarded onto a gondola on a cable stretching between the trees. Bakura and the others who took the same transport boarded before him, and once all were in, the door closed and it began to move.
Bakura watched the Egyptonian stare around at everything in amazed curiosity. The trip took about fifteen minutes and stopped at an elaborate platform. Marik was looking in every direction as he was guided along a bridge made of a massive branch that stretched between two trees. But once the other end was reached, he found himself being dragged in a different direction than the one that Bakura was carrying Ryou in.
“No…” He gasped, struggling. “Please!” Bakura whirled.
“SILENCE!!” He shouted, then walked over to Marik. “Look at him now, Marik.” And he looked down at his brother. “This is the last time you will ever see him.” Marik’s eyes widened.
“No… Emperor, please, I…”
“I don’t care. This is all your fault. And I will never forgive you for it.” And then he turned and disappeared into the rain and the darkness. And Marik seemed to lose all strength, slumping against the soldiers holding him. They turned and led him onto a platform that began to sink down towards the thick cloud of mist that sat on the surface of the swamps that covered the planet. In fact, the platform actually descended INTO the mist, and Marik looked around and saw nothing but white mist. It was an eerie sight and feeling, and he shivered as he inhaled the thick mist. The platform slowed to a stop, and the soldiers pulled him off, following glowing red beacons within the mist that kept them from falling off of the walkway and into the dark waters below. A door opened and they entered, and once the door closed Marik could see again. He looked around as he was led to a spiral staircase and guided down it. Every few steps there was a small platform that acted like a front porch to the individual cells that made up the prison complex of the palace. Marik was brought down to cell number 4, and was left there, alone. He sighed as the door closed and looked around the small room, then shivered and rubbed his arms that were bare; it was cold.

Yami and Yugi entered the clinic and walked over to where Malik lay with a Sumerian doctor tending to him.
“The healing looks like it’s progressing well.” The doctor was saying as he showed Malik his x-rays on a large screen. “As you can see here, the operation we did on your arrival stopped the internal bleeding from your major organs.”
“You said that several organs had been dislodged?” Malik asked.
“Yes, your highness.” The doctor said. “Forgive this description, but it was almost as if they were trying to… scramble your guts in slow motion.” Malik winced.
“I see.”
“Everything has been placed back where they belong. I still want to watch your left lung, but everything else looks fine. Do not exert yourself and try to keep your breathing slow and steady.”
“Okay. Thank you.” Malik said, and the doctor smiled and bowed, then turned and bowed again, seeing Yami and Yugi. After he was dismissed Yami and Yugi approached Malik.
“Hello.” Malik said, softly.
“Hello Prince Malik.” Yami said, bowing to him, slightly. Malik nodded. “How are you doing?”
“How do you think I’m doing?” Malik sniffled. “My brother has been taken away… he’s a prisoner of war and is no longer Pharaoh. And… And I’ll never see him again!” He hid his face in his hands. Yami reached out and gently stroked the boy’s golden hair.
“Malik… please don’t cry…” Yugi said, moving closer. “We’re going to try and convince Bakura to release him.”
“You don’t understand… Marik will not leave Assyria. He will stay there because that is where Ryou is.”
“Ryou is… in his mind.”
“But Assyria is his home. Marik swore he would take Ryou home soon. And now that Ryou is home Marik won’t leave, because if he did, Ryou will leave with him in his mind unless they can set him free. And if Ryou is freed… what are the odds that Emperor Bakura will let Marik live?” Yami and Yugi sighed, trying to think of something positive in all that had happened.
But nothing came to mind.
