Chapter 20

………………………………….

Marik stared down at Ryou’s body beside him. Anak also stared, baffled, and even frightened.

“What… what did you do?!” Anak gasped. Malik winced and lifted his head, also curious. Slowly, Marik lifted a hand up and placed his finger tips on his temple, and his eyes widened.

“He… he’s… here.”

“Where?”

“In my… mind. Deep inside…”

“He’s in your mind?!” Anak questioned, eyes wide as Marik stood. He turned and glared at Anak.

“Damn you. He is an innocent child!” Marik’s eyes began to glow. “He is a gentle creature! How dare you force him into this!!”

“What did you do to him?!” Anak roared back, both frightened and enraged.

“He did what you told him to…” Marik growled. “He learned the secret of the Ancient Scriptures from my mind. And because he did so, I could not let him leave my mind. And so I closed it in upon him. He is inside, and cannot get out.”

“How did you do that?!” Anak shouted, looking more and more alarmed by the minute. Marik stared at him, then suddenly burst into hysterical laughter.

“I DON’T KNOW!!” He screamed and stumbled to the side, dropping into a chair, still laughing. “I… I don’t know…..” And his hysterical laughter turned to harsh sobbing. Slowly, he slipped to the floor and bent over Ryou, crying into his chest. Anak and his soldiers glanced at each other, not sure what to do.

Back on the Sumerian Flagship, Bakura wasn’t much better than Marik. While he was not sobbing hysterically, he was huddled on the floor, shaking and crying. Seto looked at Yami.

“What do we do?!” He gasped. Yami shook his head slightly, expression hardening with determination.

“Anything.” He hissed, and jerked Bakura to his feet, slapping him harshly. “Snap out of it! We’re going!”

“Huh?” Bakura blurted, bewildered. Yami looked at the screen a moment, then wrapped his arms around Bakura and narrowed his eyes. Seto opened his mouth to ask what was going on, but before he could utter a sound, Yami grabbed his wrist, then teleported.

“HEY!!” Otogi cried, running over to where they had stood. “What about us?!”

Yami opened his eyes and looked around, and seeing himself with Seto and Bakura on the bridge of the small vessel Yugi had stolen, released the breath he had been holding. He hadn’t been sure if he was close enough to make the jump to the ship.

“What the…?!” Seto yelped, looking around. Anak was pressed against the wall, badly startled, and staring at Yami, Bakura and Seto. Yami glanced at Seto.

“Our brothers. Go!” Yami commanded. Seto blinked, then turned and ran. Bakura whirled and stared down at Marik. His eyes were confused for a moment, then flashed in fury. He bore down on Marik, throwing him off of Ryou, then gathered his brother’s body to his chest, desperately calling his name both mentally, and verbally. Marik looked around now, seeing Yami kneeling by Malik. Slowly, Marik stood and turned, facing Anak. He moved towards him, but the soldiers converged, surrounding Marik.

“Kill him!” Anak cried. Bakura whirled.

“HE’S MINE!!” He screamed, then threw open his mind and invaded those of the soldiers. He did not scream, as Ryou had. His mind was far more powerful in offenseive mental attacks so he did not do as Ryou would have done, which was the defensive scream. He tore through their minds at rapid speeds, literally ripping thoughts and memories apart and throwing them in every direction, and destroying their very grip on reality. The men all stumbled and fell, groaning and screaming and writhing, unable to even control their own bodies. Anak stared. Marik grinned and moved closer.

“Get back…” Anak gasped.

“What’s wrong?” Marik hissed in a crazed tone. “Not so big now that your men are down and out?”

“Get away you freak!!” Anak cried, and raised his hand, threatening Marik with a telekinetic attack. Marik’s eyes narrowed and he raised his own hand.

“Do you truly want to make an attempt?” Marik giggled. “I’ll destroy you either way, but if you resist it will not be as clean.” Anak’s eyes widened and he slammed Marik with a telekinetic attack, but to his horror, Marik simply shrugged it off.

“I seem to have gotten all of the telekinetic power than my brother did not…” Marik said with a grin. Seto ran in at that moment with Yugi, Mokuba and Shizuka.

“YAMI!” Yugi cried, running to him, and Yami caught him up in a hug. Yugi grinned, then looked down at Malik. “Are you okay, Malik?!” He asked, kneeling.

“Get Malik back to our ship, Yugi. And the others.”

“Where is it?”

“Close enough. Just go to the council chamber.”

“Okay, Yami.” Yugi said, then looked at Mokuba and Shizuka. “Take my hands.” He said, and they obeyed. Yugi closed his eyes and teleported, taking Mokuba and Shizuka back to the Sumerian Flagship, where the princess had a joyous reunion with Jounochi. But there was no joy on the smaller vessel.

“King Yami.” Marik said, and Yami looked at him. “Please… take my brother to your ship. He’s hurt.” Yami nodded and helped Malik to his feet. The boy’s complexion looked gray, and he winced and coughed again, blood splattering from his mouth. Marik ran over and gently pet Malik’s face.

“Shh… You’ll be okay…” He said, softly. Malik swallowed thickly and nodded. Marik looked at Yami.

“I… I’m trusting you…” He said, and Yami nodded.

“He will be seen to, immediately.” He said, and Marik nodded his thanks as Yami allowed Seto to place his hand on his shoulder, and the three men vanished.

Then, Marik slowly turned and looked at Bakura who was staring at him as he held his brother in his arms. Anak turned to sneak from the room, but both men turned and glared. Anak froze.

“You bastard.” Bakura said, suddenly. Marik looked at him, to find Bakura’s gaze on him now. Bakura’s eyes were filling with tears again, and he was shaking.

“I… I didn’t… I don’t…. I mean—“

“You trapped him in your mind!!!”

“… I’m sorry.” Marik gasped, and Bakura shook his head.

“This cannot be forgiven, damn you!” He screamed, and Marik blinked, then nodded.

“As you wish it.” He said, softly. Then, Yami reappeared.

“Come.” He said, beckoning to Marik. Marik blinked when Yami took his hand, then placed his other hand on Bakura. Anak blinked as they disappeared. His soldiers all looked at him.

“It doesn’t matter.” He managed to croak. “Get us home to Egyptonia. Marik has relinquished his crown. I have his words on a vid-disk.”

“Sir, King Yami is trying to make a connection!” One of the soldiers said, looking at a control console. Anak blinked.

“Connect.” He said, and a moment later, the five monarchs (Bakura was missing) appeared on the screen.

“We wish to bare a gift to the new Pharaoh.” Marik said with a grin, and Yami chuckled. Anak blinked, then paled as he saw the object in Yami’s hand. Yami then vanished, reappearing a moment later with empty hands. Then, the monarchs, Yugi, Mokuba and Shizuka all smiled and waved. And the screen went blank.

“By the center of the universe!” Anak howled. “THERE’S A PLASMA DETONATOR ON BOARD!!!”

The monarchs all stared out the viewing window, watching the small ship as they left it behind. It faded as they moved further from it. Suddenly, a bright light appeared and Marik snorted, turning away as the ship exploded.

“That’s the end of that.” He mumbled.

“Oh no.” Bakura snarled, turning and glaring after him. “This is not the end of anything. Not after what you have done to my brother!”

“…….” Marik stared at the wall.

“WELL?!” Bakura shouted. Marik was silent. “SAY SOMETHING, DAMN YOU!!”

“WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?!” Marik screamed back whirling on Bakura. “I’m sorry! I… I just… I’m sorry… I don’t know how to… how to release him…” Bakura narrowed his bloodshot eyes.

“You are under arrest, Marik.” He snarled.

“WHAT?!” Yami gasped, moving over.

“As the Assyrian Emperor, I am placing you under arrest for a crime against the Assyrian Empire. For the kidnapping of my brother… Twice.” The monarchs stared.

“You can’t, Bakura!” Seto said. “He is the Pharaoh!”

“No he isn’t.” Bakura announced. “We all heard him. He has relinquished his crown. He is NOT the Pharaoh. Not anymore.”

“Anak is dead and we have our brothers back!” Yami gasped.

“No.” Marik said, softly. “He’s right. I gave up my crown. And… I kidnapped his brother… twice.” They all stared. “I surrender myself to Emperor Bakura, to face whatever he may set as my fate…”
