Chapter 2

Unbeknown to Yami and Yugi, Yugi’s fellow vampire hunters were tracing Yami’s aura back to his lair, planning to avenge their youngest member and prepared to take out the young teen if he had been transformed. Anzu was infuriated that a vampire would dare go after HER Yugi, let alone two! Jou was just glad that the bloodthirsty aura of the dead vampire left behind was the only aura own for blood that night. However, he was confused by the other vampire’s aura: There was no bloodlust in it, just plain lust. Jou wondered why that was. Surely vampires couldn’t fall in love? There was no way! They’re hearts couldn’t even beat!
The hunters came upon the cave where Yugi and Yami slept, and Jou sighed with relief that Yugi’s aura was still human. That little guy had a knack for getting into trouble and not being able to escape without the blond teen’s help. Jou was glad he wasn’t too late. He checked the aura of the vampire and was surprised at the love and contentment radiating from him. Could it be? Could this vampire actually be in love with a human? With a hunter, no less?
The other’s saw Jou’s confusion and looked at each other, equally confused. Jou had keen senses, resulting in his ability to sense auras from a large distance away. He could even “smell” someone’s feelings like a dog, though anyone who compared him to one got a right hook to the face. Anzu growled, muttering that she’d finish this and stalked into the cavern, ignoring Jou’s hissed protests that something was different about this one. Anzu stopped short at the entrance to the cavern Yugi and Yami slept in, appalled by what she saw.
Jou came up behind her, followed by the other hunters of their group. Honda saw the rage boiling within the only female member of their hunting party, and attempted to hold her back, but she was too quick. She slipped out of Honda’s grasp, aiming her crossbow at Yami’s heart, not caring if Yugi got hurt anymore. Jou sensed Anzu’s murderous attempt and shouted at her to stop. Yami’s eyes flew open at Jou’s frantic yelling, looking to see what was going on. He saw the crossbow aimed at him, panic filling his mind. He grabbed Yugi and flew into the air, the arroew grazing his left shoulder as he flew to the other end of the cave. Yugi, who also woke from Jou’s familiar shouts, looked up in surprise as Anzu aimed another attack at the vampire.
Yami growled at the woman, setting Yugi down gently and flying directly to his attacker, slashing her throat open with his claws before anyone could react. Then he fell to the ground, crying out from the pain in his shoulder as his wound had opened more from his counterattack. Yugi rushed over, surprised to see that a vampire could bleed. Jou and the others hurried over as well, ready to attack the vampire if this was a trick. Jou lowered his crossbow first, taking in the impossible sight before him.
The vampire was bleeding. He was bleeding! His heart was beating! Jou shook away his confusion and order Malik and Ryou to heal Yami’s wound. Malik and Ryou, the groups two healers, rushed over and performed their magic on the heavily bleeding shoulder wound. Honda walked up to Jou.
“What’s going on here?” he asked the group leader. Jou shook his head.
“Don’t know. I’ve sensed his aura was different from the start. But I don’t know how this is even possible,” Jou said quietly to his wingman, looking at Yugi in concern. Yugi had gathered up his and Yami’s clothes and dressed himself as he waited for Malik and Ryou to save the vampire’s life. Finally, Yami stirred and sat up. He hissed at the hunters who were too close for his comfort, ready to defend Yugi and himself. Yugi placed a hand on his arm and held out Yami’s clothes. Yami looked into Yugi’s amethyst eyes and saw that every would be okay now. The vampire dressed quickly as the hunters backed away slowly to give him a more comfortable space.
“Jou, why did Anzu attack us?” Yugi asked. Yami looked down at his little hikari. He knew these hunters?
“She acted against my orders. I tried to tell her to stop, but you know her,” Jou sighed. He shrugged his shoulders. “Always knew that hot head of hers would be her undoing. I’m just glad it was in self-defense that she was killed and not by a bloodthirsty beast. By the way, how come your vampire friend has a beating heart?”
Yugi and the others looked at Yami in surprise. Yami decided to answer. “I’m not quite sure how my heart began beating again, but I have a feeling it’s because Yugi and I made love last night,” he admitted, earning a low whistle from Honda. Yami continued, “However, there is an old saying among my people that if a vampire can find his soulmate and fall in love, their love will cure all their ills. I guess this is what it meant.”
Jou nodded. “I agree. After all, it’s the only explanation we have,” he mused. “Anyway, when night falls, we’ll escort you two back to the base. Can’t have less understanding hunters come after you, now can we?”
Yami smiled, “No, I guess not.”
