Losing Out
Chapter 2 – Losing Out
Kaiba knew he should feel ashamed of himself but didn’t. He wanted to know who that girl was. Wanted to know what Duke had to do with this. He kept trying to convince himself that is was just curiosity that was driving him to this, not sexual tension.
School didn’t help. The atmosphere was all wrong for Kaiba. He liked to think and the incessant noise in a high school was in no way productive for this. He growled to himself, why did he attend school anyway? He was a CEO, what more education did he really need? The most noise in the room at that point originated, naturally, from Joey Wheeler. After everything that had happened, Kaiba had begun to respect Yugi. He had no ill feelings toward Tea, he actually found her amusing. She had developed a...partiality to him which she had trouble hiding. Even Tristan stayed out of Kaiba’s way most of the time. Joey Wheeler, however, was just annoying. Joey tried to think of himself as Kaiba’s friend and, sometimes, equal. The mere idea of this placed a smirk on Kaiba’s face.
He was still smiling to himself when the door opened and she walked in. He looked up to see a mane of red hair. The girl from the lake walked right into his classroom. He recognised her mainly from the hair but her body was also very familiar to him. He managed to look up to see her eyes, a deep green. She was beautiful. He needed to talk to her.
“Oh, hi there! Are you new?” Before Kaiba could even move Yugi was holding out his hand to the new girl. All respect for Yugi went out the window at that moment as Kaiba wanted nothing more than to rip his tiny arms off.
“Yeah. First day!” She smiled at Yugi and took his hand. That smile. It was breathtaking. Kaiba watched Yugi lead her over to his friends, away from Kaiba, again. This girl had to stop leaving.
For the rest of the free time he had, Kaiba stayed in the room, trying to listen in. This new girl seemed to enjoyed the company of the geek squad. Joey and Tristan had immediately started to be louder and more boisterous than usual. Seto grimaced, the mating ritual of the freak had begun. He tried to see if she was interested in them but her face was unreadable. He tried not to think about her body again. Tried not to let his mind slip back to his minutes by the lake. He could almost feel the blood rushing to his crotch. He tried to contain himself. Not here, not at school.
“Kaiba?” He opened his eyes. Tea stood before him. She didn’t think he noticed the little things she did for him, but he did. Another button on her shirt ‘accidently’ left open and the skirt subtly pulled up another inch. Kaiba noticed these things and, as a man, he certainly appreciated them. Tea wasn’t unattractive and her sizable cleavage was nothing to be sniffed at but boy, was she annoying.
“Yeah?” He met her gaze and saw her cheeks redden. This pleased him.
“Um” She was lost for words already. That had to be a record. “We were wondering...as you seem free...if you wanted....to come play Duel Monsters with us.” She had gone violently pink by this point and was twisting her hands together. Poor girl. She must have asked him this every day for the last three weeks but today the offer seemed appealing. She was with them. She would meet him, would see him duel.
It was too obvious though. Putting himself in their little cheerleading posse would show that he had feelings for her.
“No, but thank you, Tea. I have things to attend to.” He realised to late that he had thanked her. Something he never did. She squeaked and went even pinker.
“Ok. Well....if you ever want to.... you know where we are.” He knew. Kaiba nodded to her and stood up, picking up his briefcase he walked out the room. He had nothing to attend to and nowhere to go but he had to leave the room. Another minute in there may have caused his to stiffen as he had in the rain. The girl held some power over him he couldn’t place.
Kaiba went outside and phoned into his company, just to check everything was ok. As he put the phone down he heard voices behind him. He couldn’t believe it, the geek squad was coming outside, just his luck. She was still with them, a redheaded beauty in their midst. Both Joey and Tristan seemed transfixed by her, as any sane man would be. Kaiba couldn’t read Yugi’s expression but wasn’t worried. She was pretty much twice his height, he should escape her notice.
He tried to avoid watching her as she walked. Watching her hair swing down her back as her long, slim legs moved. Kaiba looked away. He couldn’t afford to look at her, the result could be disastrous. He didn’t know where to go.
“Kaiba!” Yugi was calling him. He had no option but to turn around and face him...and her.
“Hey Yugi.” Kaiba couldn’t bring himself to be as cold as usual. He didn’t want her to think of him like that. Yugi was smiling. He didn’t seem to notice the change, he thought everyone was all smiles and rainbows. He was a weird little thing. But he was gesturing to her.
“Kaiba, this is Lee. She’s new. Lee, meet Seto Kaiba.” She, Lee, was holding her hand out to him. He took it automatically. Her skin was soft and her grip was not as weak as most females. She was smiling at him, he was almost lost in her.
“Yo Kaiba. Wanna do us a favour?” Joey jumped in between them, subtlety was not his forte. He had his usual grin on and was running his hand through his hair. Kaiba loathed to offer him anything but didn’t want to start their usual fight. Even if he always won.
“Want another trouncing, Wheeler? You know I’m always happy to oblige.” Joey’s smile faltered and Yugi took over.
“Well not exactly. Lee here is a pretty good duelist and we were wondering if we could use one of your arenas to see what she’s got.” Kaiba had already seen what she had in other terms. He smiled at Yugi.
“We’ve a couple free this afternoon. Ask Mokuba when you arrive. Who knows, I may even drop in to challenge her. I’ve got bored of beating people who should know better.” She smiled at him.
“Should I know better, Seto?” She had called him Seto. Her smile brought his attention back to her, to everything about her. She raised an eyebrow. He laughed and winked at her.
“We’ll see.” And he walked away. He had to get away, quickly. He could feel himself begin to harden from just being in her presence, this was serious. Before he got out of earshot he heard Tristan talking.
“Umm, guys. Is it me or did Kaiba just wink?”
