Title: The Last Merman

Chapter 2: The Last Merman

~~The Following Morning~~
Kaiba awakens to the sound of someone knocking on his door. He lazily sits up in bed before saying, “Come in.”

The door opens, revealing Izono carrying a covered dish.

“Breakfast is served, Seto-sama.”

“Thank you.” Kaiba replies taking the dish from Izono before he leaves.

He uncovers the dish and sees his breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and a cup of coffee. ‘I wonder what the merman eats. Seaweed? Maybe other fish?’

After eating he takes a shower and puts on a pair of beach shorts and a white t-shirt. He doesn’t even bother doing anything to his damp, messy hair.

As he walks on deck, he notices Mokuba swimming in the pool. He takes notice of his older sibling and swims to him.

“Nii-sama??” he says as he observes his brother looking very relaxed and more like a teenager than a CEO of a powerful corporation.

“What’s wrong Mokuba?”

“I can’t believe you’re actually this relaxed.”

“This is our vacation. I’m so glad we took it.”

“And you’re welcome.” Mokuba says before pulling his brother into the Olympic-sized pool.

While in the middle of a water-volleyball game, Izono walks to the edge of the pool.

“Seto-sama…”

“Hai, Izono?” Kaiba says, quickly reverting back to ‘CEO’.

“Nothing is wrong sir; I just wanted to inform you that we will be reaching the island within the hour.”

Kaiba ‘sheds’ his CEO mode and smiles at his head assistant. “Arigatou Izono. You need to relax! Have fun! This is a vacation!”

“But sir…”

“But nothing!” Kaiba says interrupting. “Go and get out of that suit. I didn’t put all of those clothes in your closet for nothing!”

Izono nods before leaving for his room. When he turns around to continue his game, Mokuba is looking very strangely at him.

“Doushita, Mokuba?”

“I can’t believe something like that just came from you.”

Kaiba smiles and serves the ball to his brother. They continue playing their game a while longer before getting out. They shower and put on some shorts and a t-shirt before the boat docks.

Kaiba, Mokuba, and the rest of the crew leave the yacht for the mini-mansion Kaiba had built on the island. Mokuba runs straight to his room while Kaiba walks around the island. He spots his favorite hammock and to his dismay, someone or something is in it!

He slowly sneaks closer towards the hammock and the being quietly sleeping inside. The closer he gets, he thinks it’s one of his island staff members, but then quickly recognizes the hair.

‘Could it be?? Nah...’

He reaches the hammock and looks at the naked, sleeping man.

‘It’s him, but how?!’

He examines the male at how his fin has changed into two legs and he actually has an inkei.

‘I…I’m seeing it, but I don’t believe it…’

Kaiba softly shakes the sleeping male. He wakes up with a bit of a fight before realizing who is standing above him.

“Hello sir, I’m sorry for being here.” He says apologetically.

“No, no problem. I didn’t know that you…”

“Had a full human form?” He says finishing the sentence. “Yes, I do. I’m not able to change at will or sustain it, but the times I do change, I come here to relax. What are you doing here?”

“This is my island.” Kaiba says before looking down at his feet as he feels a slight blush creep upon his face.

“What’s wrong sir?”

He was starting to get even redder by the moment.

‘What the hell is wrong with me?!’

“You’re naked.”

The merman looks oddly before saying, “Naked? Oh without covering! I’m a sea creature, so why would I need that?!” He asks as he stands up.

Kaiba realizes that they’re about the same height.

“You’re tall…” stutters Kaiba. He reaches out to touch the merman’s hand. “It’s smooth, like human skin…”

“No duh, I am fully human now.”

His statement seems to snap Kaiba out his trance as he scowls at him.

“Why the scornful look, sir? And what is your name?”

“I don’t appreciate sarcastic remarks and my name is Seto, Seto Kaiba.”

“Well, Seto Kaiba, I’m Katsuya.”

“Are there any other mer-people?”

Katsuya turns around, with his back to Kaiba. “I am the last one.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“No, it’s okay. Your island saved my life actually.”

“How can an island save a life?”

“Around the time of the moonless sky, mer-people change into their full human form. We stay this way for a few hours, but during this time, we have to seek dry land. About 80 years ago, there was a flood and since I love this island, I was already here when I changed. Unfortunately, water covered the other islands and my people drowned, leaving only me.”

“80 years ago?! So exactly how old are you, Katsuya?”

“One-hundred.”

Kaiba jumps back a bit. “You’re a hundred?! But you look no older than me, and I’m 20!”

“20 of full-human years are equal to a hundred mer-years.” Says Katsuya as he looks at his hands. “I have to leave now.”

“Wait, where are you going?”

“I’m only able to sustain this form for so long. I’m starting to change back.” Katsuya says turning to show Kaiba his hands. “I’ll see you when the sun sets.”

Before Kaiba could say anything, Katsuya is already diving back into the water, only seeing his large fin just before it disappears underwater.

He shrugs off his thoughts before lying in the hammock. ‘What an unusual creature he is…’

~Later that night: Around 10~

Even though it’s still kind of early, everyone has retired for the night. Everyone that is, except for Kaiba. He’s lying in the hammock, looking out at the Pacific Ocean.

The otherwise calm waves are disturbed by the splash of a large fin, causing the relaxed man to almost fall from his place.

Kaiba steadies himself before standing and walking barefoot to the water. He walks into the ocean, far enough that the water is waist level. Katsuya swims up to his new friend, using him to steady himself in the somewhat shallow waters.

“Thank you for meeting me here, Seto Kaiba.”

“Please, just call me Seto. Why have you requested to see me? I usually don’t abide to ones request.”

Kaiba notices as Katsuya tries to hide a faint blush from becoming an even larger one. “Because…I wanted to…”

“Oh?” he replies as he places his weight on his left leg, causing the merman to hold him slightly tighter.

“Well, if you didn’t want to honor my request, then why did you wait?”

“Because I wanted to.”

Katsuya smiles a little before saying, “Will you turn me in? To collect the money? I mean, I’m not apt in allowing myself to come in such close contact with full humans.”

“Then why me?”

“I’m attracted to power.” He says looking firmly into Kaiba’s eyes. “I can sense the power you have.”

“Heh, smart answer.”

Katsuya sighs, slightly agitated at the response.

“Tell me…about you. I’ve told you my background earlier.” Katsuya says, hoping to get Seto off his high horse.

It works as Kaiba quickly turns his head, and his expression has softened quite a bit.

“I care not to talk about that. I only look to the future.”

“Apparently you had a rough past, but is it as bad as losing your entire family?! Having your entire race wiped out?!” Katsuya says as he’s now in tears of the memory of that night. “Seeing your entire species floating in the waters…these same waters that I now swim in…”

Kaiba embraces Katsuya, falling on his knees to get in a better position.

“Not that bad, but my parents died when I was only 6, leaving me and my younger brother in the care of relatives that didn’t give a damn if we lived or died.”

“I had a younger sister…her name was Shizuka…” Katsuya quietly says as he’s now resting his head on Kaiba’s shoulder.

Unconsciously aware of his actions, Kaiba is now rubbing Katusya’s scaly back with one hand and softly petting his disheveled, blond hair with the other.

“It was the hardest to see her…face down in the water…stiff…pale…dead… She wanted to be with mom that day, instead of me…now they’re both waiting for me in the afterlife…

There have been plenty of times I wanted to end my life. But one thing has kept me alive. Hope. The hope of me finding another one of my kind. We live all over the world in various oceans. Some of us have been caught by full humans and put on display like we’re only for your enjoyment…or killed and our scales and fins sold to black market…”

Katsuya suddenly pushes Kaiba away. “Why the hell am I telling you all of this? How am I supposed to trust you as much as I want to? You may have been sent by one of those humans who want my fin!”
Katsuya dives into the ocean…unaware of someone following him…
