Chapter 2

If he’d been a girl, then maybe he would have appreciated the brawl that was going on in front of him.

Or maybe not, since neither of them was exactly fighting over his honor, they were fighting over the right to possess him. At least that’s probably what Otogi was doing. He had no doubt that Kaiba was just responding to Otogi’s opening move, a sucker punch to Seto’s gut while Jou tried to explain the situation.

‘Togi had opened the door, had seen Seto’s hand resting possessively on the small of Jou’s back and narrowed his eyes in anger. Jou had started with, “Ryuuji, let me explain,” as soon as they’d stepped into the living room. His boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend, had leveled him with a furious, green-eyed gaze and he’d gulped before continuing, explaining how he’d been in love with Seto since high school and last night with the brunette ‘Just happened.’ (And Jou hadn’t missed Seto’s eyes widening in surprise when he confessed his true feelings.)

“I didn’t mean to hurt you, ‘Togi,” he’d concluded, sadly.

“So that should make it all better?” Otogi had sneered. “Because you feel bad about leaving me for this prick, I should just smile and move on?”

“N-no, not smile and move on, but…’Togi, I don’t love you. I’m sorry.”

“Did you ever, Jou? Or were you imagining I was him the entire time?”

Jou had looked away guiltily, and the next thing he knew, Seto was uttering a surprised “Oof,” and staggering back from Otogi’s punch.

Then Seto had angrily launched himself at the Dice King, both of them careening into the glass coffee table with a spectacular crash. It had only gotten worse from there and now they were on the front lawn of Otogi’s house, after having destroyed most of the living room and after Otogi gave Jou a bloody nose when he’d tried to intervene.

At Jou’s cry of pain from Otogi’s fist drawing back to punch Seto, they’d both stopped. When Seto had seen the blood running from the blonde’s nose, Jou had witnessed a frightening sight; something in Seto’s eyes just…snapped. But before the blond had been able to say anything to try and defuse what he figured had suddenly become a very dangerous situation, Seto had grabbed Otogi by the scruff of his neck and the back of his pants and had started toward the front door. As he ran to the downstairs bathroom to get a towel for his nose, Jou had heard Seto growl, “I’ll kill you.”

When he got back, he found Seto and Ryuuji wrestling in the grass. He’d guessed that Otogi must have found the strength to fight back when he found himself being tossed out of his own house.

Jou stood in shock as the brawl continued, not sure whom he should root for. He was certain that Seto would eventually kick Ryuuji’s ass, but was that what he really wanted? And what about Seto’s warning and the psychotic rage Jou saw in his love’s eyes? Would Seto really kill Ryuuji? No, he wouldn’t, not over him. He couldn’t be that oblivious to the …

He heard the loud snap as he moved closer to the battling pair to try and break them apart again. Seto dropped Otogi’s limp form and drew back in horror just as three police cars, sirens blaring, drove up on the grass surrounding him. Jou dropped to his knees in shock in front of the body of his former lover.

“Seto, what have you done? Ryuuji? ‘T-togi? S-say somethin’ man!” he choked, stroking the black hair back from his ex’s cooling face.

“Shit, Kaiba! What did you do?!” he screamed in anger and sorrow, at a wide-eyed Seto. “Y-ya didn’t have ta kill him! Fuck! I was already yours! Ya-ya didn’t have ta…” he trailed off with a sob, head dropping into his hands, as a blanket was wrapped around his shoulders by a recently arrived paramedic.

Jou allowed himself to be led away to the waiting ambulance, his mind overcome with shock and sorrow.

“You have the right to remain silent…” he heard the officer drone as the cuffs were applied to his wrists.

He killed him. He killed Otogi. He hadn’t meant to, but the sight of Jou bloodied had sent him into a rage, and he couldn’t stop himself. But he hadn’t meant to kill him, he’d just wanted to beat him up.

How had it come to this?

Last night he was at a party at Yugi’s with Otogi, the Mutt, and the friendship squad. This morning he had the love of his life in this bed. Now he’d killed someone? Not just anyone, but Otogi? He didn’t even dislike Otogi! All Seto had wanted was to let Jou explain that he and Otogi were through and then he had planned to take Jou out for a nice brunch. After that, he’d thought maybe they would take a walk in the park or a quick trip to Kaibaland, and then have a leisurely dinner at the mansion with Mokuba. Hell, he’d even planned to cook!

How the fuck had it come to this?

“Shit, Kaiba! What did you do?!” Jou screamed at him, the look on his love’s face breaking his heart even more than it had already been broken. “Y-ya didn’t have ta kill him! Fuck! I was already yours! Ya-ya didn’t have ta…” the blonde trailed off with a sob. Seto watched as Jou went with a paramedic toward a nearby ambulance.

“Do you understand your rights as I have explained them, Mr. Kaiba?” the officer concluded.

“Yes,” Seto whispered as he lowered his head, allowing himself to be led to the other ambulance to be looked over.

On the way to the police station, his mind spiraled out of control.

Kaiba Corp. would be ruined. His duel disks and Duel Monsters in general will become associated with his criminal act, which will probably ruin Pegasus and Industrial Illusions as well. Every Kaibaland in the world will probably close. He’ll fall so deep into debt afterward that he’d have to borrow money to pay the lawyers for his trial. Most of the thousands of loyal Kaiba Corp. employees will lose their jobs. And he could do nothing to stop any of it.

He was a murderer.

He’d murdered Otogi.

It wasn’t the same as what had happened with Gozaboro. Everyone knew the abuse he’d suffered at that bastard’s hands and had praised him for taking action to keep Mokuba from receiving the same treatment. He’d been a hero.

But not this time. Now he was just a murderer, a cold-blooded killer who took out his rival in love on the front lawn of the man’s house. A rival who he’d considered a friend.

They’d all hate him now, the friendship squad. ‘No more drug-free parties at Yugi’s house,’ he sneered to himself in disgust.

Yami, his best friend without a doubt, , probably wouldn’t want anything to do with him now. Even Jounouchi had turned away from him. Who did he have now? Mokuba? His brother couldn’t possibly forgive him for this. Otogi had been his friend too. Maybe if he were protecting Jou or something, Mokie would have understood, but that hadn’t been the case. He’d just been enraged, angry beyond reason, too far gone to be stopped. But that was not an excuse, nor a defense.

‘Young billionaire Seto Kaiba murdered a love rival in cold blood,’ seemed to be the consensus of every news outlet. But Jou knew that wasn’t exactly what happened. Seto didn’t mean to kill Otogi, it was an accident, just a fight gone horribly out of control.

After getting checked over by the paramedics and giving a statement to the police, Jounouchi had gone to Yugi’s house. He’d needed to be with his friends while he figured out what to do next. He’d only planned to be there overnight, but his stay had stretched into nearly two weeks.

Seto had gotten out on bail a little over a week ago. Jou had wanted to see him, but he had no idea what to say since he’d all but accused Seto of killing Otogi so he could have him all to himself. It’s not like he’d meant that or anything like that. The shock of seeing Otogi lying motionless in the grass had simply freaked him out and he’d lashed out at the one who’d done it.

Gods, what must Seto be feeling now? He’d killed a friend of his over his boyfriend and then his boyfriend just walked away! “I’m such a fucked up loser,” the blond grumbled angrily.

“What did you say, Jou?” Yugi inquired from his spot on the couch next to a stunned Yami. He’d gone to the mansion last night and Seto had refused to see him, he’d turned away his best friend since sophomore year in high school, and Yami wasn’t handling it well.

‘At least Yami had tried to see him,’ Jou thought, knowing he had completely avoided the suffering brunette. And out of everyone, he should have been first in line to see Seto.
Because it was all his fault anyway.
He was the one who’d said ‘yes’ when Otogi asked him out. He was the one who pretended he held Seto in his arms every time he slept with Otogi. He was the one who had kissed Seto and then had gone home with him. He was the one who’d insisted on explaining to Otogi about them. He was the one who’d gotten in the way and got punched in the nose.

He was the reason Otogi is dead.

Seto was the one charged, but he was the cause. How could he have just walked away?

“Jou?” Yami asked, standing next to the stricken blonde crumpled on the floor next to the kitchen table.

He and Yugi had heard a thump and looked up to see Jou shaking with emotion on the linoleum.

“It’s my fault, Yami,” he choked. “Seto’s life is ruined and ‘Togi’s dead because of me!”

“Jou…” Yugi began soothingly. The blond pulled away from his best friend’s supportive hand on his shoulder.

“No, Yug’! Don’t try to tell me it ain’t ‘cause it is! I knew I was in love with Seto when Otogi first asked me out! I should have said no then! I shouldn’t have led him on. He wouldn’t have been so hurt and angry if I hadn’t led him on. And he’d never have punched Seto and they never would have started fighting and then Seto wouldn’t have…” he broke off sobbing as Yami and Yugi enfolded him in their arms.

Mokuba watched his brother go through the motions of eating dinner, moving his food from one side of the plate to the next.

“Nii-sama, please eat something,” he prodded.

The fork dropped and Seto closed his eyes and shook his head.

“Nii-sama, you need to eat. You’re going to just waste away. Please, Seto,” he pleaded.

Seto pushed the plate away and left the table. Mokuba sighed in defeat. He didn’t know what to do to help his brother or to reverse the crash and burn of his life.

Kaiba Corp. stocks were plummeting, Seto had been removed as CEO, Kaibaland attendance around the world had dropped dramatically, and a few days ago, a large dumpster filled with duel disks and Duel Monsters cards had been set on fire at the front gates of the mansion.

Mokuba had called Yami to come by the night before, figuring if anyone could help Seto, Yami could, but his brother had turned Yami away, going so far as to push him out of his bedroom and slam the door in his face. Yami had called to Seto through the door for nearly two hours, finally trudging out of the mansion, hurt and dejected, when Seto hadn’t responded.

Mokuba had tried talking to Seto after Yami left, but had been just as unsuccessful. Truthfully, seeing Seto at the dinner table had been a bit of a shock, since his brother had spent the bulk of the last six days locked in his room.

It had to have been an accident. Seto wouldn’t have killed Otogi without a reason. He was not a murderer!

Mokuba put down his fork and leaned his chin on his clasped hands. He needed help to deal with his brother and the fallout of what had happened, but he’d run out of options when even Yami hadn’t been able to reach Seto.
