Don't Look Back; Raise Your Eyes - Chapter One
By Hammy-Chan
Pairing: Malik/Ryou
Rating: NC-17 [Eventually]
Genre: Alternate Universe, Yaoi, Slight Angst
Summary: Malik has always been able to see things that others couldn't. Unable to control when he saw these things, people called him a freak, thus he's been constantly alone. That is, until he moves into a new apartment, and meets a spirit he calls 'Tenshi.'

Chapter One

Malik looked around the apartment quietly, hands in his jacket pockets, as the landlord, Mr. Nakagawa, showed him around. He stared at the man slightly when he mentioned the fire. It had started on the fifth floor - his floor - and spread to the fourth and sixth floors, killing a total of 12 people. Apparently, the fire started due to faulty wiring, and food left unattended on the stove of one of the apartments.

"But, I can assure you, everything had been re-done. All new wiring, new fire alarms, new fire escapes. This place has improved a lot in the past five months," Mr. Nakagawa nodded, hoping to ease his potentially new tenant's uneasiness.

"It's alright," Malik smiled slightly, hoping to ease the man's own nerves, "I don't mind. I'm sure it'll be just fine."

Mr. Nakagawa looked visibly relieved, and nodded, "Well, let's head down to the office, fill out paperwork, and the keys and apartment are your's."

Malik nodded, not fully listening to him. He could sense something here. A presence. He caught a flash of light out of the corner of his eye and snapped around, frowning as he saw nothing. He looked around a moment, before following Mr. Nakagawa out.

A month later, Malik was sitting on his bed, looking out the window quietly. He knew there was someone - or something - living in his apartment with him. And it didn't bother him. The presence he felt wasn't intimidating or frightening like some of the others he'd felt before. This one was more quiet, almost shy.

After a couple months, Malik was starting to feel more comfortable with the knowledge that there was a spirit living with him. It made the place feel less lonely. The spirit had never shown itself to Malik; only left the distinct feeling of being there.

Malik had yet to find out what apartment the fire had started in, and had a feeling he never would. "I can't say why, but I feel like I want to get to know you," Malik said softly, looking around his bedroom. He knew the spirit was there; he could feel it. He'd never successfully communicated with a spirit before, but he felt compelled to try. This spirit felt different.

Malik sighed, getting no answer. He didn't really expect to get one either. He got up and headed for the Kitchen to make Dinner, catching a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye. He snapped his head around, but saw nothing. "...Hello?" He asked, looking around, "I... I'm Malik. I..." Malik frowned, not sure what to say.

"I'm not sure you can even hear me," Malik said slowly, after a moment, "But... I know you're here... I can feel you. I don't mean you any harm... like I said earlier... I just want to get to know you is all."

Malik blinked as a goldish light slowly appeared before him. It didn't resemble anything, it was just a light. A golden, glowing light. Malik smiled slightly, and the light instantly faded away.

Malik frowned. If he didn't know any better, he'd say that this spirit must've been shy. "It's okay..." Malik said softly, "I'll be here. Take your time.."

There was no reply, but Malik could feel the spirit still. Malik still didn't know why this spirit felt so different than other's he'd encountered before. The words his sister once spoke to him, rang loudly in his memory, 'Maybe you just haven't found the spirit you were meant to help yet.'

*~*~*~*

The weeks went on, and the spirit slowly showed itself more often, still just a golden light, but it was a little bit more frequent. And Malik found himself talking to the spirit more and more often. He'd even come to start calling it 'Tenshi'. That's what the golden light reminded him of, an angel.

Malik had told the spirit about his past, his home in Egypt, his lack of friends, almost everything and anything he could think of. Malik jumped slightly as the phone rang, having been lost in his thoughts.

"Hello?"

"Hello, brother."

"Ah, Ishizu, always the formal one," Malik laughed, happy to hear his sister's voice for the first time in so long, "How're you?"

"I'm fine," Ishizu replied, "And yourself? How's Japan? The new apartment?"

"Japan is... Japan," Malik laughed, "And the apartment is fine," he continued, not bothering to mention the fire to her, not wanting to worry her, "I also have a spirit living here with me."

"Oh really?" Ishizu asked, interestedly. She has always been the only one who stood by Malik and never doubted his gift, "What's it's name?"

"Well... I'm not sure," Malik admitted, "I've been calling it Tenshi, for lack of anything else. And it hasn't spoken or anything to me, or even showed itself, except for a gold glowing light every now and then. It seems almost shy."

"And it very well might be," Ishizu agreed, "Usually when a person dies, how they were in life carries over with them. However the spirit acts towards you now, is most likely how it was when it was alive."

"Makes sense," Malik nodded, stretching out on his bed, "It's nice though... I like the feeling of not always being alone."
