CHAP 2: Slow But Steady
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Slowly they made their way across space with the ship in toe, “the engines are not liking this extra load and can not handle it for much longer” came Mai’s voice over the com. “don’t worry about it, they can handle it. I know my ship and she” Bakura was cut off by the sound of something exploding.
Mai was thrown across the room by the force of the explosion and landed with a thud on the ground, smoke bellowed out from the side of the engine as sparks fell onto the ground beside it. She winced and touched her forehead on the left side, “What was that?” Bakura’s voice came shortly after.
“Thanks I’m okay,” she got up and wiped the small amount of blood from her fingers onto her pants, “you know your ship, ha?” she rolled her eyes, “by the looks of it the plasma coils are out,” she went back to the engine. “Can you fix it?” Bakura asked hopefully the last thing they need was to be drifting through space.
“No. We don’t have the parts to fix it, but the good news is we still have impulse,” came Mai’s reply. Bakura sighed as he ran a hand over his face this was going to be a long day.
“Marik see what planet is closest so we can make the necessary repairs,” Marik nodded his head as he pushed a few buttons on the light blue screen in front of him, looking over the ships navigation system.
“It wouldn’t matter cap Stratoes is still the closet that we have,” Marik was still looking if he had missed anything. “Will the impulses get us to Stratoes Mai?” Marik looked over his shoulder then back to the screen.
“It should, but the engines really need to be repaired soon or replaced, if the impulses go then we won’t be going anywhere.”
“Don’t worry she’ll make it,” Bakura smirked, he had ‘acquired’ it but that was sometime ago and his crew had said that it was a bucket of shit and what the hell was he thinking. But all Bakura saw was potential, he thought with a coat of paint and a lot of work to the engines the ship now was never in better condition besides needing more work to the engines.
“Yeah just like you know your ship,” Mai said sarcastically. “But might I suggest a new ship?”
“Your funny Mai, really funny,” Bakura growled as he got up out of his chair, “we’ll take shifts, we’ll go first,” Malik nodded his head he got up putting a hand on Marik’s shoulder as he turned and headed to the lift. He had been up for a good two full days now. Marik moved over and sat in his chair Bakura walked up and sat in the other one.
Bakura activated the screen and looked through it, “the shortest way there is this one,” Marik pointed out as he leant over and the screen lit up showing the direct route, “I have
plotted it in, so the autopilot will do most of the work from here,” Marik smirked as he lent back, they sat there for awhile when the doors opened and Mia walked in with a couple of glasses of Darvellian Ale.
“I thought that this would help,” she lent down with a tray and they took their glasses she dumped the tray near by on the floor and grabbed a chair for herself and sat down. “The impulses are running smoothly for now and I have them on a warning alarm if anything should happen.” They both nodded their heads.
“Cap do you mind if I take a half hour brake,” Marik sat forward in his chair, Bakura and Mai gave knowing smirks.
Bakura looked at his watch it read 1:45am “Take the night, I can handle things here with Mai,” Marik’s smirk grew as he got up and walked off and out of the bridge carrying his drink.
Mai and Bakura snorted themselves awake when the warning alarm went off, “What the hell?” Bakura pulled down his feet from the navigation screen, Mai looked around and rubbed her eyes, he pushed a few buttons “time to get up people were on!” Bakura called.
“How long were we asleep for?” Mai walked to the door looking at her watch 9:45am.
“I wasn’t asleep I was just resting my eyes,” Bakura said as he took off the autopilot, Mai rolled her eyes. “A few hours,” Bakura looked over his shoulder then back to the screen pushing more buttons.
“I’m checking the impulses,” Mai said as the doors closed and she headed for the engineering deck.
“Marik, Malik get up here!” Bakura called out.
“Were on our way” Marik replied, Bakura looked up as the front wall of the bridge turned into a screen and showed what was outside the ship, Bakura smirked it didn’t matter how many times he had seen it he still loved it, a big planet twice the size of earth, with its lush green tropical forests inhabitant by things you have only read about in books and its clear blue water abundant in spectacular marine life all while snow white clouds float around the blue skies.
“You are approaching Stratoes we have you on our radar, identify yourselves and state your business, failure to compile will result in us taking action.” Came a young woman with light brown hair and blue eyes and stern voice, she was in a white uniform with a name tag that he couldn’t read, Malik and Marik walked out of the lift and over to their seats, Bakura got up and moved out of their way.
“This is the Soul-Collector, I repeat Soul-Collector and we’re in need of repairs and supplies permission to land?” Marik put the earpiece in his ear and adjusted it near his mouth, “Also we need a tractor beam to bring in the ship we are towing it has no engine power.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes as no replay came he knew they took a few minutes as they check you out to see if your legit, “Malik what’s the situation with the laser cannons and torpedo bays?”
Malik gave a devilish grin, on the thought of a fight “We are half loaded with Endon torpedoes wouldn’t be able to get away if they shot at us, no engine remember cap Malik said the grin fading and a look of longing sat there.
“I know Malik.”
“You have permission to land, your coordinates are bay 08 docking and repair, the ship will also be on the same bay awaiting your arrival we are retrieving it now, welcome to Stratoes Soul-Collector, enjoy your stay.” Marik pushed in the coordinates as she said them.
“Well you heard her, take her in Malik.”
“Eye captain,” Malik said as the nose of the ship tilted downwards in a dive then turned off to the right.
Men stood outside with red lights in there hands guiding the ship down, it landed with a light thud, “good job everyone,” Bakura got up and walked to the lift as Malik and Marik shut everything down the ship gave a whining sound then a rattle before going silent.
The ramp lowered from out of the bottom of the ship and Bakura walked down it, Mai came running down to him, three men came walking up to them, “what’s the problem?” a tall lanky man ask covered in grease.
“The engines have blown, Mai is the engineer she’ll fill you in,” Bakura walked past the men as Mai led them into the ship, Bakura walked up to the doc-manager.
“State your problem,” Bakura rolled his eyes every planet he landed on they were just business, he would have hated to end up in a dead end job like this.
“Engine repairs on the Soul-Collector …dock,” Bakura lent back a bit and looked “08, under captain Bakura,” the old guy wrote it down he was very rough looking he had stubble on his chin and face like he hadn’t shaved in a few days and his clothes like everyone else around here was full of grease and stains.
He turned around and grabbed a small communicator and pushed a few buttons then handed it to Bakura “this will go off when your ship is ready,” Bakura looked it over and snorted.
“My engineer Mai Valentine will be assisting your repair guys.”
“That’s not necessary.” The man said gruffly.
“I don’t want anyone messing with my ship and she is good at her job,” Bakura turned and left, walking up the ramp and into the ship he walked down the hallway his boots clinking on the grid floor, down a few steps and through the doors to the lift.
Soon he stepped out onto the bridge Malik and Marik were talking as they ran a systems check on the ship “we might be stuck here for a few days two at most, so if you want shore leave you have it,” Bakura looked over Marik’s shoulder.
“Thanks we could do with a bit of time off,” Malik smirked as he finished up and shut everything off.
“No you want to hit the stores for new fire power,” Marik chuckled.
“Hey if it’s going to save your ass on the next salvage you’ll be thanking me.”
“Just make sure that you get me something good,” Bakura smirked and headed to the lift again, “see you back here in two days,” he stepped in and the doors closed.
