Seto gaped at the phone in his hand, his mind recalling perfectly the features of the blonde who’d mysteriously vanished from his, and everyone else’s, life the day after high school graduation. The Yugi-tachi had never been the same. When Yami and Yugi had run out of options for finding the missing teen, they’d come to Kaiba and had offered him their Egyptian god cards as a reward if he could find Jou. It was a reward that Seto had never intended to collect because, even if he would have found the other boy, it would have been for his own ~personal~ reasons, and not for the smaller teens.
Seto was brought back to the present by the now easily recognizable voice on the other end of the line asking, “What’s the job?”
Stilling his reeling mind and focusing on the problem at hand, Seto replied, “I am in need of your services. We need to meet. Today. Pick the time and place, and I will be there.”
Jou hesitated for a brief moment before answering, “The Raven’s Nest Bar. Five P.M. I’ll find you.”
With that, the line went dead. Seto lowered the receiver. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t reconcile the image of the friendly, lovable Jou he’d known in high school with the picture of a cold-blooded killer for hire.

Jou stood with his hands braced on the table, head lowered slightly. He stared at the innocuous white phone with frustrated and angry eyes. Fuck...in another hour that god damned phone would have been disconnected and Dark Raven would have vanished forever. He would have had his life back. Yugi, Yami, Honda and the rest of his friends all would have been part of his world again. Trust that asshole Kaiba to screw this up for him too. It seemed that Kaiba was destined to destroy Jounouchi Katsuya’s life, first by ruining his beginning year of high school with incessant put downs, and then, during the last year of school, by spoiling his love life by being so damn hot and unattainable. Shit, it’d been two years, three months, sixteen days and Jou ~still~ got hard whenever he saw the icy CEO on the television, or, occasionally, in person. The blonde couldn’t help but smirk with satisfaction at that last thought. He wondered what the jerk would think if he knew that ~Jou~ was the mystery guy who had stolen a kiss from him under the mistletoe at the last two Kaiba Corp. Christmas parties.
Standing abruptly, Jou shook off the emotions threatening to overpower him. He had a job to do, and a lot of prep work to do for it. He’d better get started.

As Kaiba stepped into the bar, all eyes slid to him. Pegging him as a business wimp, they returned to the show currently in progress on stage.
Kaiba rolled his eyes at the stares and, out of pure curiosity, looked toward the stage. His eyes widened at the sight of two lacy, black bra and thong-clad women, practically making out on the stage.
Seto gave a grunt and spotted a small round table in the far back corner. Quickly walking over to it, he sat down on the uncomfortably straight-backed chair. Flipping open his laptop, he began to outline another game design in the works. After a while, a noise distracted him and, as he looked up, a tall, red-haired man sat down at his table. The man’s eyes were a bright, illuminating green that, Seto imagined, would probably glow in the dark. The stranger had full, rounded lips and well-defined cheekbones and a careless smattering of innumerable freckles were sprinkled over his face.
Seto looked at the man suspiciously. “Who are you?” he barked.
“Why, Seto! Don’t you recognize me?” The man’s voice was airy and light, completely what you’d expect by his fairy-like appearance.
Seto’s set-in scowl deepened. “No. Why should I?” he growled, sneering at the stranger.
The man’s face lit up in a smile. “I must have gotten really good at this, for the icy millionaire CEO to not recognize me! Try this.” He paused, as if trying to remember something. “How’s this?” The light voice changed, becoming heavy with an accent and tone that Seto immediately recognized. “Now do ya recognize me, Moneybags?”
Seto’s face twisted with shock. “J-Jou? You...You look...different,” he finished somewhat lamely.
Jou snickered. “I s’pose you could say that. But don’t call me Jou. I’m Dark Raven. Remember that. I don’t want you telling anyone about this. If you tell a single person that you know where I am or ~who~ I am, the deal is off, and ~you~ will be the next case that the Domino police homicide division will be solving. That is not an exaggeration. It is a statement of fact.”
“Understood. Agreed. Would you like to hear about my issue?”
“Get on with it, Moneybags. Some of us’ve got lives to get back to.”
So Kaiba started. He began with when Gozaburo had first spoken to the military equipment company, and continued to when he had arrived at home that morning to find out Mokuba had been kidnapped.
When he finished, Dark Raven sighed. “Jesus, Moneybags...Poor Mokuba. So...I s’pose you want me to find the kidnappers, find out who hired them, take ‘em out, kill the employers, and bring you all of their heads on platters, with a safe Mokie helpin’ me carry the dishes?”
“Yes...but keep my brother out of it as much as possible. He was devastated when you disappeared, and I don’t want him to know about your life.”
Jou’s expression changed, showing for a fleeting second a wistful vulnerability before hardening once again. “I want you to know that I’m not, under any circumstances, proud of what I do,” he said stiffly. “If I had any choice, I wouldn’t live this way.”
Seto’s eyes turned to ice. “You have a choice, of course. You could quit doing this at any time. Don’t whine at me, Mutt. You made your life what it is. Live with your own choices.”
Jou, his eyes shuttered and blank, said coldly, “Believe what you will Moneybags, but like I said; I ain’t proud of none of the things I’ve done. I understand your desire to protect your brother, so I will do everything I can to shield him. But, if it comes down to choosing between shielding him from what I do and saving his life, I will save him. Fuck you and your holier-than-thou scruples. I may be the gun that fires the bullet, but you are the one who points the barrel and pulls the trigger. So, in ~my~ mind, that makes us equal.”
