Pancakes and Tire Swings
Chapter 2
Pancakes and Tire Swings
Disclaimer: I don't own Yu Gi Oh
Yugi smiled tentatively up at his mother while eating the pancakes she had made for him for breakfast. They were blueberry, his favorite. His mouth stung so he let the smile fade from. His mother hadn't looked at his face at all this morning. Nor had she spoken a word to him. It was like she was a robot going through movements that were implanted in her brain.
Yugi looked away from his plate, his stomach cramping. This week hadn't been a very good one. Actually these last couple of months his mother had been progressively getting worse. Even when she wasn't drunk she was moody, and almost dangerous to be around.
Her voice startled him when she spoke. "Why were you awake last night Yugi?" Her tone was neutral and in Yugi's experience things were starting to go downhill once again.
Remembering her screams from the night before he didn't want to keep her waiting for an answer. "I was listening to the rain Momma." His voice was quiet he kept his head down not looking at the young woman standing near the sink.
The pan she was holding slammed into the sink. Yugi cringed swinging his head around to look at his mother. Her hands were braced on either side of the sink, face bowed. Her shoulders started to shake as she tried to suppress a sob. Yugi's eyes widened and he got up from his chair to walk hesentlyy towards his mother his hand reaching out to touch her back. "Mo-" She reacted violently pulling away from him turning her body to press back against the counter.
"Go out side!" Her voice was hoarse. Yugi cringed back away from his mother. Apparently not fast enough. "I said get out!" She pushed forward grabbing the boy by the sleeve dragging him to the front of the house. She opened the door and pushed him out, he landed on the cement walk, skinning his knees and hands. The door was flung shut and he heard the click of a lock.
Atsuki let her head rest against the door. Her hands shook as tremors racked her body. Taking a deep breath she left the door and hurried to her bedroom pushing away some clothes she knelt next to the bed reaching under and pulling out a full bottle of alcohol. Sitting in the mess that was her room she stared at the bottle laying in her hands, with a sob she let go of what was left of her life.
Seven hours later. Yugi sat on his hands trying to keep them warm. He blew out through his nose seeing steam. It almost made him smile but he didn't. The day had been grey and dreary, his clothes were soaked from the continuous mist that had changed to a downpour and back to a bone numbing mist again. He had stayed very near the house the entire day only going so far as to make his way to the old tire swing in the back yard and then trying the car to see if his mom had left it unlocked. She hadn't.
He leaned against the house and closed his eyes. The sun was going to go down soon. 'Im gonna freeze.' He thought. Pulling his hands from under his butt he pulled them inside the baggy shirt he was wearing folding them around him he leaned his head back.
It wasn't always like this. Before he had had Nana and Momma. Momma was happy then with Nana around. They had done stuff together then like on the tire swing. He opened his eyes and squinted into the mist encasing the entire block, and it seemed the entire world. He could make out the tire swing and his chest hurt. He remembered playing on that with his Momma. Her smile was the prettiest then.
Nana was there to help Momma with him and the house, she was a great cook and a great Nana. But seven months ago she had died from a stroke. Momma hadn't been happy since. She lost her job three weeks ago and that made everything just worse around the house. And yet Yugi knew that without Nana Momma didn't want to be happy. Even before Nana died Momma would drink sometimes and get mean and without Nana to keep her on track or as the young mother once said "Keep her sane."
Darkness fell once again. Yugi shivered tucking his chin down. His head perked up when he heard the door unlock and swing open. His mother strolled out dressed in jeans and a t-shirt she didn't even give him a backwards glance as she unlocked her car got in starting it and pulled out of the driveway.
Yugi's heart clenched in his chest his eyes watered once again as he watched the taillights fade. He pushed himself up. His breath caught in his throat with the feeling that pushed at his stomach and made his head hurt. Yugi closed the door behind him with a click making sure to leave it unlocked for his mom when she came home.
A/N: This is short but it just felt right to end it here. Feedback helps me all the more and any information and Ideas would be very much appreciated. Re uploaded it after AFF had the glitch. Hopefully the next chapter will be up soon! Im still working on it.
