*Inside Grand Manor Tahpenes*

“Father, why do you insist upon following these old traditions?” asked Yami as he strode quickly back and forth across the room. His purple tunic swirling as he walked back and forth across the room. “I do not yet feel ready to bind my life to another.”

“My son, you should know that you can not hide your restless from me. You are no longer content with you life. You shall see that this is all for your own good after you are happily married. After the wars, our people suffered great losses and most families are now only able to have one child. It took your mother and I over 50 years to have a child and you will probably be our only one. The council has approved that the marriage age can resort to the old ways as our people are becoming fewer with each generation. We hope that by having an earlier start to marriage, more offspring can be had by the couples” replied Daktari as he stood by the windows staring into the landscape. The windows were open and a gentle breeze flowed in stirring his green robes.

“I guess that I can understand the reasons but I am still not happy. I am going over to Seto’s house for a while” said Yami. He bowed to his father and made his way out of the great hall passing his mother on the way.

/ Good morning, mother./

/Be well, my son./

“I see that he didn’t take it very well” Akina stated as she came to stand by her husband, her purple robe also stirring with the breeze. She too looked out the window to all the flowers that she had planted so many years ago.

“You are correct as always. You understand his reactions so much better than I. It needed to be done and he has accepted his fate” replied Daktari. “I have to believe that we are making the right decision for the future generations to come. I am still worried as he has shown no interest in any one. I only wish for him that he finds the happiness that we share.”

Akina replied, “Give him time, my love. This is a hard change and with the festivities only weeks away, he will be under a lot of pressure. I have faith that things will turn out for the best in the end.”

*Meanwhile with Yami*

He quickly strode from his home and the long steps. He mounted his glider and called out to Seto. /Where are you, my friend?/

/I am with Bakura and Marik at Grand Manor Dumachus./

/I will join you there shortly. There is many things on my mind and I need your and the others guidance./

/We shall see you soon./

Yami turns in the direction of Bakura’s family home. Yami prays that his friends will have good advice for him on how to make it through this difficult time. Yami feels a little better as he loves being outdoors with the breeze ruffling his tri colored hair. Yami finally reaches his destination after 20 minutes of traveling. He gets off his glider and makes for the gardens. He is sure that is where he will find his best friends. They all seem to be drawn to the outdoors. As he comes around the corner of the manor, he is indeed correct. All three are sitting around the fountain in the entrance of the garden. “Greetings to you all. How are you today?” As he walks closer, he can see that Bakura look a little upset, Marik seems sad and Seto has his normal calm expression on his face. “Bakura and Marik can I help you in some way?”

Neither boy responds. Seto is the one who begins the conversation. “I am correct in assuming that we have all been told by our families that we must attend the party in a few weeks?” he says. Seto looks to all three boys in turn seeing the nods from each. “I had thought as much which is why I made sure that we were all together today. I only want to have to say this once.” The other boys look at him expectantly. “I know that you all want to know if I have foreseen anything regarding this change in our future. I will tell you only this, we must go to the party. I have seen darkness on the horizon but not where it comes from. I have seen both possibilities and I will tell you that the future is indeed bleak if we do not attempt to find our chosen mates. I cannot see their faces but I am confident that they will all be present at the party. Are there any questions?” He looks to each of his friends starting with Yami who shakes his head no. He moves on to Marik who is fiddling with his green tunic.

Marik finally looks up. “I have reservations about this. I wear the colors of a healer proudly but being a healer is something not typically found in a grand family. I do not have the skills of Seto, who wears the white of the seer with the blue of a guardian. Nor do I feel as worthy as Bakura who wears the black colors of the hunter. Your skills of tracking and hunting are rivaled by none. And let’s not forget Yami who wears the purple of those with strong mental abilities. You are one of the strongest telepathic’s our people have every known and you are telekinetic as well. I am surrounded by greatness but feel that I am not great myself.” Marik once again looks down his light blond hair hiding his face from the others.

“Be silent, little one.” All eyes turn to Bakura. “I too feel that I am not ready for this change to my life. I don’t think that I am ready for a mate but if Seto says that it is time, I must believe him. He has never been wrong before and he is not wrong now. I find it hard to believe that you have so little faith in yourself. Your are the rock that holds this group together. We three are more adventurous that you and it almost always gets us into more than we are ready for. Who always is there to lend us a helping hand? Malik, you are the one that we all turn to and we will get through this like we have everything else that has befallen us is life. Together we are strongest. Now enough talk. We shall go to the party and enjoy ourselves. Any questions?”

All three boys shake their heads.

A/N: Social status is split into three levels. Grand Families’ are the oldest and most respected of all the families. In the Grand level, the families are either Emperors or Tsars. The next level is Great Families’. They are divided between Marquis and Barons. Last are the Noble Families’, which consist of Duchy or Lords. All members of each family are gifted in some way. As the story unfolds, more about everyone’s abilities will be revealed.

A/N #2: As Yami’s father mentioned previously, children are becoming rarer. Because of this fact, it was decided many years ago by the Council that 2 males could marry since over 75% of the children born in the last three hundred years were all males. The healers diligently worked and created a formula that allowed the male body to carry a child.
