/Mariku to Malik/
\Malik to Mariku\

Yugi blinked, his normally bright shining eyes dull and lifeless; devoid of any vestige of emotion. Idly, he glanced around the strange room, his haunted gaze passing over the platinum blonde sitting in the corner. The white-haired youth lying next to him captured his attention.

"Ryou!", he cried, tears filling the twin violet pools as he grabbed the slender arm and shook him.

The pale teen opened his eyes. "Kura?"

A sob broke from Yugi's lips as his friend called out for his yami. "No, Ryou. It's me."

The chocolate brown eyes darkened as the memories came rushing back. Tears flowed unchecked as the pain of losing his koishii Kura flooded his mind, his heart, his soul.

The two teens embraced each other and cried, sharing the agony of losing their yamis, their soulmates. The very reason they existed. Without them, they were nothing.

Malik watched helplessly, his own heart breaking as he witnessed the pain his friends were experiencing. He knew first-hand how devastating this loss was. His yami, his koibito, his Mariku, had been banished to the Shadow Realm a year ago. Thankfully, his heart had been restored to him. Isis, Rishid, and Shadi had rescued his koi from the Shadows.

Needing his strength, he opened his mind-link to his darker half. He sighed deeply; Mariku's emotions, his love, restored and rejuvenated the emotionally drained hikari. \Thank you, koishii.\ He mentally glomped and pashed his exotic koibito.

/Anytime, my hikari./ He sent mental kisses and hugs to Malik, who gratefully accepted them.

\Stay close, and keep the link open, please? I may need your help. Yugi and Ryou are broken. It's worse for them, because they never admitted their love for their yamis. And now, it's too late.\

A long silence followed, but Malik could still sense his yami through the link. /It may not be as late as you think, hikari. There may yet be a way for our friends to be reunited with their foolish yamis./

Lavender eyes widened as he processed that cryptic message. \Mariku?\

The exotic spiky haired Egyptian left their home, heading back to the gateway to the underworld. /Stay with them, koi. I'll be back soon, hopefully with some good news./

Malik approached the bed; hesitantly, he sat down close to his intwined friends. "Yugi? Ryou?" Two sets of red swollen eyes turn to him; both teens reaching for him. Wrapping his slender arms around the weeping boys, he pulled them to him, offering comfort without words. Sometimes, words were inadequate; what do you say to someone who has just lost his reason for living? How do you comfort someone who has lost half of his soul? There are no words. He knew first hand. He closed his eyes and thanked Ra that his yami had returned to him.

Mariku ran lightly down the stone staircase, his exotic eyes searching the gloom for the familiar spiritual presence of Shadi. "I know you are here; I can feel you," his voice ringing in the darkness.

The appearance of the ancient guardian of the Sennen items startled him. "What are you searching for, Mariku?" His eyes, so mesmerizing, so hypnotic, bore into the lavender ones.

"You."

Shadi blinked, not expecting such a straightforward answer from the unpredictable and dangerous yami. He knew why he was searching for him; however, he wasn't sure if he should help. There is a very great danger in attempting to retrieve souls from the afterlife. It can be, and has been done, but there is always the risk of failing to completely restore the heart, the mind, and the soul of the person you are seeking. The ramifications of that venture are devastating.

Maiku continued. "I want you to help me."

Shadi effectively cut him off. "You plan on rescuing Pharaoh Atemu and Bakura, correct?" Not waiting for a response, he continued. "Do you understand the risk you would be taking by such an attempt?"

The exotic Egyptian nodded, his spiky platinum tresses brushing against his tanned shoulders. "I do. And I accept the uncertainty. I can't sit back and do nothing. You reunited me with my koishii Malik. How can I sit around and watch his best friends suffer? I know its dangerous, but I'm willing to take that chance. Anything to make Yugi and Ryou smile." he pressed on, seeing that the Guardian Spirit was listening and weighing his words. "The hikaris deserve the chance to reveal their feelings openly for their yamis." Blinking rapidly, he kept the tears from pooling in his eyes.

The action was not unnoticed by Shadi. So, Mariku was sincere. Isis was right. He had changed, for the better. "Okay, I'll help you. But the consequences rest with you. If there are 'problems' with the Pharaoh or the Thief King, then I charge you to take care of it." He paused, his unnerving eyes piercing Mariku, holding him captive. "You do understand, don't you?"

No words were necessary. He bowed his head before the wise protector, fully accepting the responsibility of what he was attempting.

Shadi stood in front of the sealed gateway, stretched his arms wide and began chanting. The Sennen scales and key appeared in his hands, glowing brightly in the darkness. As Mariku watched in amazement, two golden orbs began circling around the spirit. They stopped in front of him and lowered to the desert floor. Growing rapidly, they soon took on the shape of humans. With one last burst of blinding light, the spell was complete. The figures rose to stand proudly before their conjurer and Mariku. Atemu and Bakura had been resurrected.

I know its shorter than my usual chapters, but with school and work, it's hard to find the time. The next chappie will be longer. How will Yugi and Ryou react to their yamis miraculous return?
