Jou awoke to the titter of birds and the whining of dogs. Slowly he lifted up his left arm. Bandages covered his sore scratches and bruises. Someone was laying next to him with their back to him. Leaning over he saw that it was a girl with long dark brown hair. He sat up slowly being careful not to stir the girl next to him or this sores.
"Where am I?" He mumbled to himself. As he looked around he saw small tents, like the one he was under, made of tarps and other such things. The other sides were far away and hard to see, about a mile away in the least. The closed in lot was dusty with tufts of grass scattered around looking like a shabby small community. The small "homes" were around the edges and some set away from the walls. Each had their own small fire pits while directly in the center there was a large communal fire stack. Jou heard the small patting of light feet.
From behind the tarp wall to his back a small girl appeared barefoot and dusty. She stopped and cocked her head to the side as she stared at him quizzically. The small girl shook the woman next to him and bent over to whisper something in her ear keeping her eyes on jou.
“Yes siya, go along now." the woman’s groggy reply came with the brush of a hand. She sat up yawning and stretching her arms. She turned to him and opened her aqua eyes. “So you are awake are you?" She smiled at him lightly.
“Yeah Where am I?" Jou asked scanning around. The woman stood with another yawn. She bent backwards and placed her palms on the ground then grabbed her ankles cracking her back. She stood back up wearing a long, dingy, white, button up shirt and rumbled blue shorts.
"Welcome to sanctuary. My name is robin, but if you wish you may call me crystal, the name I was born with. She said stretching again. She offered her hand, jou took it to stand.
“Why exactly do you have two names?" Jou questioned with an arched eyebrow.
“robin’s my street name." she opened her shirt just enough to reveal a read birthmark in the shape of a heart nestled between her breasts. It looked like the breast of a robin. “As if you couldn't tell it came from the birthmark. Everyone around here has a street name. By the looks of you you’re a newbie to the streets."
“My name is jou and yeah I am." He said distractedly as he scanned the area once more.
“Well jou it looks like you are going to be one of us now." Jou almost questioned the thought until the moments of memory from the past night came through.
“Yes I suppose so." he said suddenly quiet. “Why did you bring me here?” Robin looked strait into his eyes and smiled a warm smile.
“I saw you last night. At first glance I knew what happened to you." she put a warm arm around his shoulder. “I feel very sorry for you. But we own the blocks around here we take in people like you, weather young or old." She said softly.
"So how long have you belonged to this group?" Jou asked.
“Me and Kevin started this group when I was about 5. But I have been on the streets all 16 years of my life, and the best years have been right her." she said motioning around.
“Wow only 16." jou said thoughtfully to himself.
“is it truly so hard to believe." robin replied. Not realizing he had spoken aloud jou was a bit shocked by the reply.
“No not at all." he covered with a practiced nonchalance though not fooling her. It was hard for him to believe seeing as she matched him inch for inch and meeting him eye to eye.
“Alright alright. Either way welcome my boy to sanctuary." Her arm encompassed all that surrounded them as a group of birds soared theatrically into the air and across the sun soaked sky. She smiled and grabbed a hold of his wrist. “come on lets introduce you to everyone." she pulled him out of the small home and ran with him to the center of the dusty lot. Filling up her chest with air she smiled and let a shout to the sky. “HAY! NEW MEAT!"
“What did you say?" jou said alarmed. People poured out of the huts on every edge of the lot. Young and old and all in between came rushing and shuffling towards them. Jou turned to try and escape but robin, in stead of his missing shirt, hooked her fingers in jou's waistband stopping his running. The people hit them like a colorful wave. Greetings and handshakes barashed him as men ruffled his hair and hugged him gruffly while he squirmed uncomfortably.
“EVERYONE!" the people quieted only whispering excitedly. “this is jou, and he is the newest member of sanctuary." people rolled in a thunderous joyous shout. “Later we shall do the usual but for now we have to go." She grabbed a hold of his shoulders and dragged him out of the group toward an iron wall cleared of everything but one man. He sat upon the ground and had long black hair that pooled on the earth. He was muscular but not overly so and had a famine type look about him, in jou's opinion very attractive. He was apparently sleeping.
Robin kicked his foot and he shook awake falling over in surprise. “Who’s there! what’s the password?" he babbled. Robin laughed at him as he blushed in realization that it was her.
“Sleeping on duty again dove?" she said with an amused raised eyebrow.
“Not at all robin. I am hurt at the accusation. I just can not believe you would accuse me of neglecting my duties." he put on a hurt face. “So who's the new guy?" he said with an interested smirk.
“I thought you weren’t sleeping sho." she said amused. He raised both his hands in surrender.
“Ok I admit it but, well I did not have much of a chance to sleep last night." he said with a satisfied sigh his green eyes alight with amusement. “So going out with the new meat." he said standing up to dust himself off.
“Strictly on a guidance level I assure you." Robin said with a strong glance.
“Such a shame, such a waste." Dove sounded with a theatrical sadness in his voice.
“Yeah sure you can have him when we get back but for now we are going out for the "grand" tour of our little metropolis." Robin rolled her eyes in the obvious sarcasm. She cast a side long glance at jou. His torso only covered by bandages and one wrapped around his head. He wore a pair of black baggy sweat pangs around his hips. She turned her gaze back to dove.
“Sho you mind?" Robin said tilting her head towards jou.
“Not at all anything to help the new guy. I remember how hard it was the first few months. OH THE PAIN!" Sho wailed a tear sliding down his cheek. Color drained from jou's face. Robin gave a swift kick to sho casting him into high pitched giggles.
“Hay stop it. It is completely unfair to tease him or scare him after all we all knew you enjoyed It." robin said laughter jumping in her voice at both jou and sho.
“well I guess you got me there." they laughed together loud and boisterous. Sho pealed off his shirt revealing chiseled yet smooth features. He tossed the shirt up to jou who caught it appreciatively.
“thanks." jou said pulling it on still a bit shaken from sho's display. Robin nodded with a smile that was warming. She removed three holdings to the metal sheet of wall and pushed it open. From the sound it had to of had much force behind it put into resisting her, but she handled it with the ease of pushing aside a shower curtain.
“Don’t forget to lock up." Robin called as jou stepped through. Gently she let go of the sheet. It slammed hard and loud against the wood and steel bearings behind it rattling to a stop.
“I won't!" Sho called merrily over the high wall. She knew he would not, he never did. Robin began to walk with a determined and steady stride, her hair swinging to and fro with each step. Jou stayed behind her somewhat silently.
"People there are really friendly aren't they?" Jou asked absent mindedly pushing aside the curtain of silence.
“Yeah I suppose they are. They used to be out on their own but now we watch out for each other like a family." she smiled pleasantly falling back to be even with him. “There is no reason to hate because; in a scence we are all the same."
“Sounds nice."
“Yes it is. Anything is better than being alone." Robin forced herself back into the real world and away from the memories that were sweet and happy. “We work in these few blocks, some people are out now but they will be back by midnight. Rules will be explained later." She yawned sleepily. “this is where we...train." she said waving a hand toward a large battered apartment building. Paint chipped off the walls and door.
“So what do you guys do to work?" Jou asked in idle curiosity. Robin put a hand on his shoulder trying not to harm him. She led him to a bench in decent condition and sat him down. She sat next to him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders holding him tight.
“You understand how this world looks at people like us, don’t you?" Robin asked petting his arm. Jou nodded understanding because of the way he used to live the opinions he used to have. “That is why people with businesses think of us. They are afraid and prejudice and so we can not get work. So there are only two jobs open to us, Drugs and selling our bodies." Robin stopped to let her words sink in for both of them. Jou did not move frozen like a statue of a past image. “But this community is clean. We have nothing to do with drugs of any kind and in any way, and it is with that that we became prostitutes." She exhaled a long stream of air.
“Sell your bodies." Jou's words were quiet and slow as if not entirely under standing what he was hearing. Slowly he stood stiff and strait with his back to robin. Suddenly with a swiftness that almost scent robin hurdling from her seat jou whipped around with a goofy grin on his face. “That’s just fine. I will make the most money; no one can resist my body." He boasted loudly striking a pose. Robin tried feebly not to laugh but failed miserably busting out in laughter and doubling over. “what you don’t believe me?" he snickered striking another pose.
“Now that's the enthusiasm I wanted to hear." Robin cheered loudly jumping up. “come on lets go back and grab some food, I can explain he rules." Jou took her arm as they returned to sanctuary with laughter in their eyes.
