Chapter 2: The Discovery
“Take him to the baths. Have him cleaned and then taken to my room,” he ordered a slave as the Head of Guards placed the boy on his feet in front of the slave. With an obedient nodded the young woman took the boy’s hand and led him deeper into the palace to cleanse him. Yami watched the beauty disappear then dismounted from his camel, handing the reins to the young boy in front of him and turned down a long corridor. He heard footsteps hurrying after him and slowed a bit to allow Seto to catch up. “What will you do with him, Yami?” he asked.
At first Yami simply stopped and looked at Seto before shrugging. “I am bored, Seto. You know my little light is upset with me and won’t share my bed.” Seto gawked at him a moment before shaking his head. “You can’t...you can’t do that, Yami. It will only make Yugi even more upset. That last thing you want to do is drive him away more by taking that boy into your bed!”
Yami turned him running his fingers through his hair. “I know...Seto, I know, I’m just frustrated. Look, go back to your slave and we’ll talk more tomorrow,” he said as he turned back down the corridor to go to his room.
Yami did not pay attention as he entered his room. He simply began to undress but ceased as a soft jiggling reached his ears. Whipping around his eyes widened at the sight before him. The young boy he had just purchased was seated in the middle of his bed, legs folded lightly beneath him as he silently watched Yami. He had been thoroughly cleaned and dressed in a pale lavender robe that brought out the color of his eyes, a tone the pharaoh had only seen in his own slave. Yami nearly stumbled over and leant on the bed, making the boy scoot away nervously. “What a beauty you are...” Yami whispered softly.
The young man did not answer and only shrunk away more as Yami sat on the edge of the bed and looked the boy up and down appraisingly. “What is your name?”
The boy didn’t answer, only watched Yami as he watched him. They stared at each other for a long time before Yami sighed and rose to change but returned moment later to find the boy in the same position. For a long time, they sat on the bed simply staring at each other, that is until the pharaoh fell asleep.
The next morning the pharaoh woke to find the boy was gone; he sat up quickly and looked around to find him at the large balcony that faced the horizon, where the sun rose. The sun had just risen and silhouetted the boy beautifully. He watched him until the boy turned to him. He watched the pharaoh for a long moment before he turned back to the sunrise.
These actions nearly became a ritual. Yami would enter and try to find out the boy’s name but would only receive the stare of his lavender eyes as answer. Yami would inevitably fall asleep and awaken to find the boy leaning against the balcony and gazing out towards the horizon. For a month, this went on, with no sign of progress. One morning...
“Angel,” a soft voice whispered. Yami turned over from awakening and looked at the boy surprised. “What?” However, the boy did not repeat himself and so; Yami took this single word as a name.
“He just gave me his name, but every morning he’s looking out to the horizon from the balcony,” Yami sighed as he and Seto made with way to a meeting.
“So, Angel is his name...unusual name really, but what is he looking at?” Seto asked curiously.
Yami only shrugged. “I don’t know, the only thing that way is the sunrise and the sea.”
They continued to walk as Seto continued to think though nothing came to mind. “I am sorry, my pharaoh, but I don’t know. Maybe he’ll tell you.”
That night, Yami and Angel performed the same ritual they had done time and time again for the past month, but this time Yami didn’t fall asleep.
“Why do you look out of the balcony every morning? What is on the horizon you want?” Yami asked softly, not wanting to scare the young boy.
Angel was silent, as always, he was quiet and simply looked right into Yami’s eyes. His only movements were those of him blinking every so often. However, even though Yami was determined to stay awake he ultimately fell asleep before Angel even began to look drowse. Again, he woke to feel the warm sun’s light cast upon his back.
“I miss the sea...” a soft voice whispered. Yami knew it was the boy speaking and turned over to see Angel sitting on the balcony, leaning against the stone wall as he watched the sunrise. He slowly rose and walked over to where the boy sat and looked down at him. “You miss the sea?”
Angel didn’t answer, he didn’t even motion that he’d heard the pharaoh, only a single tear slid down his smooth cheek. Yami honestly didn’t know what to do so he simply dressed and left his room to consult with Seto. He found the priest with his young slave eating breakfast in the Main Chamber. Yami had to admire them. Here he was having problems with his own slave Yugi and then couldn’t figure out what was wrong or what to do with the young slave who was in his chambers at that moment. “Seto, can I speak to you in private?”
Seto looked up from feeding the blonde haired boy in his lap. The boy pouted but then whispered something in Seto’s ear that made the priest blush a deep crimson, but Seto ultimately nodded. “Yes, Joey. Now go back to my chambers.” Joey nodded and glanced up at Yami before running off.
“Seto, I think I may have found out why the boy is so upset,” Yami said sitting on the bench across from Seto.
Seto sighed and turned to the pharaoh. “Well, at least you found something out. Yugi’s still upset, and now even more so that he found out you have a new slave. Joey’s been trying to calm him down for the past week.”
Yami groaned and ran his fingers through his hair; problems just wouldn’t leave him alone. “I’ll deal with him later. Will you listen to me?”
Seto sighed and nodded looking at Yami. “Why is the boy so upset?”
Yami explained that this morning the boy had spoken, but only a small phrase. “I see...so the boy wants to return home obviously. The problem is a slave must remain a slave,” Seto said shrugging. “Nothing can be done.”
Yami nodded for a moment when suddenly his eyes lit up. “Not quite, I have an idea,” he smiled as he left Seto to ponder what he was going to do with the exotic beauty.
