Chapter 2: Outing To the Past

"NO!"

"Come on, now. Stop acting like this and let's go!"

"NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!"

Ryou was at his wit's end now. He was already late for school because of this and sighed. "Kali, if you don't come out by the time I count to three, I will be spanking you," he warned sharply. "And I will tell Daddy when he gets home too." The only reaction from that was a big "HMPF!" He frowned crossing his arms on his chest. "Oh, you don't believe me?" he asked and walked in her bedroom locking the door behind him. "Come here, right now!" he said sternly. She knew he meant business then and duckeder der her bed. "Kalista Ashley Bakura," he said sitting down. "One...two...you don't want me to get to three, young lady." She whined and slid out from under the bed. "Now come here," he said. She dragged her feet walking to him. He pulled her to him in a warm hug. "Sweetheart, Daddy told me what happened yesterday," he sighed. "Would it help if I stayed today with you at school?" She nodded and he sighed. "You know, why don't you let us go instead and you get to school?" a voice in the doorway asked.

Marik and Malik stood there smiling.

"Uncle Marik! Uncle Malik!" Kali shouted happily and ran to them. Malik lifted her in his arms and smiled. "Giving Papa a rough time again?" he asked. "She started preschool yesterday and the kids were rather rough on her," Ryou explained. "I have a test today and I was about to miss it." Marik nodded. "Go ahead," he said. "Thanks," Ryou said gratefully and ged hed his things. "Be good for your uncles, baby," he said seriously and kissed Kali's cheek. "Love you, Papa!" she said. "Love you too, Kali!" he called over his shoulder and left. Malik and Marik looked at each other and at Kali. "All right, missy," Malik said. "Let's get you to preschool and meetr ter teacher." She rested her head on his shoulder and nodded.

The teacher looked up and smiled. "I didn't think you'd come today, Kali," she said brightly. "I see you brought some friends." "I'm Malik Ishtar and this is my...brother, Marik," Malik said. "We're Kali's us. Ds. Do you mind if we staday?day?" "Of course not," the teacher said. "I could use some help today. Kali, go put your things in your cubbyhole and take a seat." Kali nodded and slid out of Malik's arms as she walked to her cubbyhole. One of the bullies snickered and tried to trip her in the process. Kali glared at him as her eyes changed from brown to red in a matter of seconds. "Do that again and I swear it'll be your last move," she said under her breath, but loud enough for him to hear. He gulped and nodded shakily. She walked to her cubbyhole and pranced back in as if nothing happened.

It was Art Day in school and all the students were playing with fingerpaints or other means of artwork. Kali sat by herself making more of a mess with her paints than anything else. Marik walked to her and chuckled. "Luckily, it's washable," he said. "What is that...uh, piece called?" "I don't know," she said. "It's fun." He ruffled her hair and kissed it. "Have fun then," he said and walked off to check on the others. "No!" Malik said suddenly at a little boy. "Paint is not for eating!" "Ew," Kali said making a disgusted face. "Tell me about it," a boy said looking at her. "He always does that. Call it sick if you ask me." "I never found paint that tasty," she admitted chuckling. "I did eat chalk once. Daddy caught me and took it away." He giggled. "We've been guilty of that," he said smiling as he walked to her. "I'm Lance Thompson." "I'm Kali Bakura," she said. "Well, my real name's Kalista, but Kali became a nickname that stuck." "Ain't nothing wrong with that," he said.

Malik finished cleaning the boy and sighed. "Hey, Malik!" Marik hissed. "Take a look at Kal!" Malik glanced up and chuckled. "And he came to her!" Marik giggled. "I've been watching them all this time." "That's too cute," Malik chuckled. "Give them a little time to talk." Marik sighed in disappointment and nodded. Kali gave her uncles a sideways glance. "They're spying on me," she sighed. Lance glanced up. "That's uncles for you," he sighed. She rolled her eyes and nodded. "So, where do you live?" he asked. "Uh, downtown in a big white house with green shutters," she said. "I'll see if my dad can drive me by sometime," he said. "We could hang out and play or something." Kali gave her award winning smile. "Cool," she said happily. "I'd like that!" He grinned and nodded.

Later that afternoon, Bakura stepped in to see naptime going on. Kali was curled up in Marik's lap while Malik rested his head on his shoulder asleep. Marik was snoring slightly from where he was sitting asleep. A little girl was curled up in Malik's lap and the teacher was fixi dig digital camera to take the picture. Lance rested on Kali's stomach and was asleep as well. Bakura chuckled quietly and the teacher looked at him. "It's too cute to pass up," she whispered. He nodded and stepped quietly in the room taking a seat. She fixed the camera and took two picture"I'"I'll make you and Mr. Ryou one as well," she said. "Thanks," Bakura said. "I'm sure Ryou will like that." He stepped in the hallway a moment and grabbed his cell phone dialing Ryou. "Hey, koi," he said. "I'm at the school now. I hit naptime. She seems fine despite what happened this morning. We'll be home soon. Love you too. Bye." He hung up and sat down in the classroom. The lights soon came on and some of the kids whined in protest. Marik was one of them and rubbed his eyes. Malik yawned and stretched. "I was just getting comfortable too, Aibou," he said. Marik nodded and sighed looking at Kali, who was still asleep. "Hey, wake up," he said. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. The two saw Bakura standing there and smiled. "Look who's here," Malik said and Kali looked up grinning. "Daddy!" she said happily. Lance smiled then as Bakura lifted her in his arms.

"Did you enjoy yourself today?" he asked. She nodded. "Daddy, this is my new friend, Lance," she said. "Nice to meet you, sir," Lance said politely. "Kid's got manners," Bakura said nodding. "You about ready to go?" She nodded. "You and your brother are welcome to come back and help," the teacher said. "You guys are wonderful with children." Marik and Malik glanced at each other and smiled. "We'll think about it," Marik said as he grabbed Kali's things. "See you tomorrow." The kids waved and they left.

Saturday came too fast for the group. Ryou sat down on Kali's bed trying to get her dressed in a yellow sundress and matching hat. "Sit still, honey!" he pleaded. "Papa...I don't like dresses," she whined. "You need to look nice today, honey," he said seriously. "Well, can't I wear something like you?" she asked. He had on blue jeans, a t-shirt, socks, and sneakers. He shook his head and sighed. "Not this time," he said and braided her long white hair. He then lifted her in his arms and she rested her head on his shoulder. "Can I bring my kitty?" she asked. He picked up the stuffed cat and handed it to her. "Don't lose it, understand?" he asked. She nodded clutching her toy close to her. Bakura, Marik, and Malik looked up and smiled. "You guys ready?" Bakura asked lifting his daughter in his arms. "As ready as we'll ever be," Ryou chuckled. "Can we get a cheeseburger on the way home?" Kali asked. "Sure, if you behave," Ryou said seriously.

At the museum, Kaiba, Joey, Yami, Yugi, Tristan, and Duke were already waiting. Ryou and Bakura walked to them holding one of Kali's hands and lifting her over the curb causing her to giggle. "Tristan, we need kids," Duke said seriously as he lifted her in his arms. "The last time, you said you wanted her out because she tried to yank your earring out of your ear," Tristan reminded him. "She has earrings too now," Duke chuckled. "Besides, she's not that way anymore." "Don't be surprised," Ryou said. "She's still known to break things." "No wonder all the stuff at home is nearly plastic," Malik said looking at Marik frowning. Kali smiled clutching her toy close. Kaiba chuckled. "You still like that thing, huh?" he asked. She nodded. "That cat's become her new best friend at night and when she's scared," Bakura said. "Maybe you should concider buying her a real pet," Yugi suggested. "NO!" Bakura and Ryou said together.

In the museum, Duke tried to act like a tour guide to Kali as he held her and showed her around. When he was around her, putting her down was his tough problem. "Oh, give her a break!" Yami groaned. "She has feet and can walk, Duke!" Duke ignored him and sighed shaking his head. "Maybe he should adopt her," Joey whispered to Kaiba. "Oh stop it!" Kaiba said frowning. Bakura was studying something and frowned when he saw the ancient scriptures. "Marik, come here a second," he said. Marik trotted over to hi"Can"Can you read that?" he asked. Marik nodded and began translating in English when he came to a part written by a woman named Kyra.

Bakura frowned suddenly. "Kyra," he whispered. "That name sounds familiar...like from my past." Marik looked at him. "We could do some research on her," he said. "Might work," Bakura said and looked at Ryou. "Marik and I will be back soon." Ryou nodded. "Take all the time you need," he said. "Thanks," Bakura said and they left to the library. Marik was skilled with a computer and sat down to check out the Internet. "Ah, here we are," he said seriously printing out everything he could find before they sat down. "Well, it says here Kyra was born 5,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt and her biological father was a thief that tortured her as a child," Marik said. "She ran away to a palace and was adopted by the head guard and one of the high priests, who were lovers. Later on, she discovered she was the key to unlog thg the Shadow Games and destroyed her father using such power and saved the life of the high priest. They thought she was immortal at first, but it was more of a test. She wrote that her reincarnation would take her place 5,000 years later and really have the true powers."

Bakura studied the papers and frowned. "Is there a picture?" he asked. "It's a painting more than a picture, but here," Marik said and Bakura nearly fainted. "Oh my Ra," he whispered. "Marik...Kyra was my daughter back then." Marik stared at him in shock. "I treated her like shit," Bakura sighed. "I had forgotten...I'd never do that to Kali. Never!" "I know that," Marik said putting a hand on his shoulder. "You've changed since then. You're different. You're not the tomb robber you were back then and you have that little girl looking up to you." "Thankfully," Bakura sighed. "Let's go." The two walked back to the museum to find everyone still around waiting. "Ryou, can we talk alone a minute?" Bakura asked. Ryou nodded and they walked to the men's room. "It's about Kali," Bakura said. "Or rather...who she was in the past." He handed Ryou the papers and Ryou rested against the wall to read them.

"You really think Kali is Kyra's reincarnation?" Ryou asked later on. Bakura nodded. "I know it," he said. "Back then, I was inexperenced as a parent and I did bad things to Kyra. Perhaps having Kali around has taught me more than I once thought." "If this is true, Kali then has Kyra's hidden powers," Ryou said and sighed. "She's only five years old, Bakura. She wouldn't know aing ing about what she's up against." "She's not showing any signs of not being a normal little girl, Ryou," Bakura pointed out. "We just have to keep an eye on her, but not as much as she thinks she has no time to herself." Ryou nodded. "I understand," he said seriously. "Duke's still got her right now and I'm scared he might try to kidnap her if I'm not careful." Bakura chuckled. "Let's go then," he said and slid his hand in Ryou's.

That night, Kali woke up and walked to her parents room. "Papa, Daddy, can I sleep with you?" she asked rubbing her eyes while clutching her kitty to her chest. "What's wrong, honey?" Ryou asked. "Did you have a bad dream?" She nodded slowly. Bakura woke up and moved over slightly. Kali slid between them and Ryou pulled the blanket around them. "Comfy?" he asked as he put his arm around her. She nodded. "Papa and I won't let the bad dream come back," Bakura promised. He and Ryou kissed her cheek together and she giggled. "We love you," Ryou whispered. "I love you guys too," she yawned and soon fell asleep feeling both parents hold her close to them.
