He stared at the Rod. Inspected it from every angle possible without physically touching it.
He wasn't sure what he was looking for. Some sign of what made the thing so special? Why is was worth having? Well, sure, it was a huge chunk of like solid gold, it had to be worth a fortune, but he already had money, so besides that...
With a sigh, he gave up and took the Rod in hand, lifting it more easily than he'd thought from the box. Before he could raise it more than a few inches the lights flickered and went out, though with the electric shock that ran through him he barely noticed.
When he could let the Item go with a solid 'thunk' against the desk the lights flickered back to life. He shoved himself backward, standing, prepared to demand a reasonable explanation...
And was arrested by the sight of the naked man lying on his bed, unconscious. He couldn't help but be drawn to him, inspecting him much as he had the Rod... Tall. Darker skin. Redder hair. The same face, though, the same basic body...
Unthinking he sat beside him on the bed, gently moving some of that hair out of his face. The same electric tingle ran through him when his fingertips touched tanned skin; slowly, the non-stranger opened his eyes and blinked up at him.
He smiled hesitantly. He found what he'd been looking for...
