I’ll do What I Want
Yugi sat on the bench outside of the changing room flicking his tail. He was not having a good time at all. Where was Yami?
When Rishid tried to stroke his tail he jerked it away and when Ishizu tried to give him a hug he got up and went to sit behind a rack of clothes. He didn’t want to be here. He wanted to be with his family.
So what if Grandpa did bad things…I want Grandpa!
He looked at his nails, chewing his thumb claw as he thought about school. They’d probably try and make him take “math” classes again. That was going to be awful. He didn’t want a job, he liked being a pet and didn’t see anything wrong with being with a human for a long time. He put his head on his knees watching people who walked by, some children pointing excitedly at him.
He watched his tail. Its end was a fiery magenta. He really liked it, but wished it were a darker red like Yami’s.
I want Yami to come get me. I’m hungry. Maybe he’ll let me have some cereal…
He began rocking in place, twitching his tail this way and that, humming to himself when something overshadowed him.
“Are you okay?”
It was a large woman with horn rimmed glasses. She reached out and stroked his ears.
“What a cutie! What’s your name?”
“Y –Atemu!” he chirped.
“Oooo! So cute Little Atemu!” she stroked him and he purred. The woman produced a random Neko treat and he ate it, frowning when she suddenly left him.
“Aw damn…”
“Yugi, language. Who was that woman? What did you eat?”
He then had the unfortunate experience of having his mouth forced open. Ishizu got most of it out of his mouth and he growled at her.
“Don’t eat things from strangers! Come back over to where I can see you –”
“You’re not my Yami! You can’t tell me what to do!” Yugi got up, hands balled into fists. “I want to see Yami! Where’s Yami?! Take me to Yami!”
People began to stop and stare and Ishizu put up her hands. “Alright Yugi, just calm down –”
“No!”
Nearby, Malik rolled his eyes, ducking back into a dressing room as Rishid handed him something else. Shadi came over.
“I’ll take him home Ishizu. We should have taken him this morning, he hasn’t been having a good time at all. Isn’t that right Little One?”
Yugi just glared and Shadi steered him out of the department store. When they got to the car, Yugi got in the front seat and slumped down, his arms crossed. Shadi just smiled to himself and drove.
“I’m sorry you weren’t having a good time. Yami said he was going home, but he looked very upset and implied that we look after you today, so that’s what we were trying to do.”
“I want my Grandpa!”
“Of course. Do you want to go by the prison?”
“I want to go home!”
Shadi gave a small nod and decided to just take Yugi home. He was going to be disagreeable all day until he could get something to pacify him.
It took no time at all before they were at the Kame game shop. Yugi hopped out and ran inside. The kitten ran in yelling and finding no one, went upstairs sulking. Shadi followed him and peeked into his room.
“Are you alright? Do you want me to stay with you today?”
“Go away…”
“Alright.” Shadi left him and went downstairs. He took out his cell phone and called his sister. “Hello?”
“Shadi, is Yugi alright?”
“No, there’s no one home. I think we should take him to see Sugoroku. I don’t think he understands the gravity of the situation.”
“Yeah…Malik wasn’t kidding when he said Yugi’s like a two year old.”
“How is that going? The shopping?”
“I feel sorry for Rishid, I think Malik had too much sugar this morning –Hold on…MALIK GET OUT OF THE FOUNTAIN!”
Shadi’s eyebrows rose and Ishizu’s voice was directed at him again. “It’ll be alright…he’ll want to see Marik again soon, then we’ll probably go home. Are you staying with him?”
“Someone has to. Yami isn’t here. I’m worried about him too…”
“Rishid said he’d go searching –MALIK IF YOU DON’T GET OFF THAT TABLE I WILL –Oh jesus…Shadi, I’ll call you back later.”
The man laughed and hung up the phone. He briefly wondered what Malik could have been doing and set about cleaning up the shop. He went to look behind the counter and jumped when he saw someone knocking at the door.
It was a little girl. He opened the door and smiled.
“Yes?”
“Can I have a toy for my kitty?” she thrust a plump kitten at his face and the man’s eyebrow quirked.
“Um…sure…”
What the hell am I getting into…
****
Yami looked around Amelda’s place and frowned. “This is…awful.”
Amelda raised his eyebrow. “What are you talking about? It’s a whole fucking apartment –”
“In an abandoned building!? We’re trespassing and this place could be condemned and everything! I can’t believe I came here! I’m going home!”
The red haired Neko shrugged and disappeared into the back, bringing back a beer and plopping down on his couch. He turned on a medium sized television and scratched his chest.
Yami blinked. “You have food?”
“I told you, I don’t always go home. I need to survive too.”
The Neko’s stomach growled and Amelda pointed to the kitchen. “Help yourself. I can always steal more.”
“You’re a thief?!”
Amelda shrugged and kept watching tv. Yami went to the kitchen and opened the fridge. There was all kind of meat and drinks and a few vegetables, but he grabbed some hamburger meat and steak sauce and rifled through the cabinets. He was going to eat today.
While Sugoroku didn’t let Yugi have sugar, Yami wasn’t allowed to indulge in too much red meat. Apparently, it made him “feral”, he didn’t think so. He put the hamburger in a bowl and dumped steak sauce on it, tossing some crackers and spices in it before grabbing a spoon and going to sit with Amelda on the couch. The other Neko saw what Yami had and blinked.
“What the fuck is that?”
“Hamburger…” Yami ate a big spoonful and purred loudly, beginning to eat more. “Sooo good…” he said with his mouth full.
Amelda’s eye twitched and he downed his beer. “Whatever…”
They watched tv while Yami ate, Amelda giving a yawn, reaching his arm around Yami. The Neko hissed, but kept eating, shrugging the red head’s hand off his shoulder. A commercial came on and Amelda leaned over, kissing Yami’s neck. The Neko hissed again and pushed him away, continuing to eat.
Amelda gave a small laugh and leaned in to kiss Yami’s neck again, kissing his cheek and moving closer. Yami shoved him away and would’ve yelled if his mouth weren’t full of food. He gave an evil look and ruined it by gesturing with the spoon, which he promptly shoved back in his mouth. If Yugi saw him now, he’d laugh. The usually dignified Egyptian Tri-color’s cheeks were puffed out as he shoved food in faster than he could chew and when he did swallow it was large and comical, the Neko licking the spoon afterward and purring loudly.
God, this is so good…so good.
He was just about finished when he noticed Amelda was trying to feel him up. He swatted his hand and grunted, getting up and taking the bowl to the kitchen. Amelda followed him, looking in the fridge. Yami grabbed a soda and drank it down, raising his eyes brow as the other Neko sized him up.
As soon as he lowered the soda can from his mouth, Amelda tried to kiss him and he clawed him on the shoulder.
“Stop!”
“Shit! Ow! God, what does it take to get in your pants!” Amelda hissed as he inspected the wound. “Ah, fuck…you’re not like Atemu at all, damn…”
Yami didn’t know what to say to that, having blushed when Amelda asked what it took to get in his pants. He wasn’t about to admit he was a virgin but was curious about what the Neko had said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“That you’re not like Atemu!”
Yami growled. “What does that mean?”
“That he got around, alright? Ah…” Amelda ran water over the cut and Yami growled.
“That’s not true!”
Amelda stopped the thin cuts from bleeding and shook his head. “Whatever, that cat spread his legs for just about anyone. I know you think he was all perfect, but when you stayed at home, Atemu would come with us to the clubs and just do the most interesting things. By the way, we were only still kittens, you know, fourteen, fifteen?”
Yami yowled and lunged, Amelda catching his wrists. “Whoa! Calm down! I’m not making fun of him or anything! I’m just saying you’re not like that! You’re better than that! I think it’s great you’re faithful to Yugi.”
The Tri-color blinked. “Yugi?”
“Yeah…he’s your mate isn’t he? I mean, I know you’ve never said so, but I figure you’re a private guy.”
“…Yugi’s sixteen. He can’t be anyone’s mate.”
Amelda let him go and leaned against the counter. “So what’s your problem if that’s not it?”
The twenty-one year old Neko turned colors then turned away. “I don’t think that’s your business –Hey!”
Amelda jerked him back by his tail. “Oh really now?” He ran a hand down Yami’s body, tapping the Neko’s belt. “You’re a virgin aren’t you?”
“Hey! Let me go!”
“Never baby!” Amelda kissed him, pushing his tongue in Yami’s mouth. The youth kissed back, ears flattening.
Amelda pulled back a little. “I knew you still liked me…always fuckin’ playing hard to get…” He pulled Yami closer to him and the Neko gave a soft mewl and closed his eyes.
They kissed again, Amelda’s hands coming around to find purchase on Yami’s rear. He massaged the base of the Neko’s tail, satisfied when the Tri-color began to rub against him.
“Say…”
“What?”
“Stay with me a few days.”
“Can’t…Yugi –Ummm.”
Amelda kissed him again, running his hands up Yami’s back. “Just stay…”
“Alright…” he breathed. “I’m not having sex with you…”
“We’ll see.”
****
Yugi woke up, someone gently shaking him awake. He sat up, frowning when he saw it was Shadi.
“What…time is it?”
“Dinner time Little One.” He sat a tray next to Yugi’s bed and stroked his cheek, rubbing his ears. “You went to sleep. I was actually down there running the shop!”
The boy yawned, leaning into the touch. “Grandpa…”
“We’re going to see him tomorrow. Okay?”
“Mmph…” Yugi got the tray and started eating quietly, pushing the food away before he was done and laying back down.
Shadi took the food away and Yugi got under the covers, briefly wondering where Yami was before going back to sleep.
****
Malik woke up when he felt someone carrying him and gave a pathetic protest meow, Rishid laughing.
“We’re going home. We spent all afternoon with Marik. Ishizu wants you at home now. You haven’t even had dinner, do you know what time it is?”
“Time to get a watch?”
The tall man laughed at the lame joke and Malik relaxed in his arms, his hair falling into his face.
“Rishid?”
“Hm?”
“…when will Marik wake up?”
“When his soul is healed I suppose. Sometimes our bodies don’t just hurt you know. Sometimes…our hearts do too.”
Malik sighed. “He should wake up now…right now.”
“But it’s nearly midnight. He should wake up when the sun is up. That way he can spend all day with you.”
The kitten smiled and closed his eyes. “Hm.”
Rishid drove the Neko home, watching him race up the stairs and jump into Ishizu’s bed, much to the woman’s surprise. He watched them play around and cuddle before he left, locking the house with the spare key.
He called someone.
“How are you?”
“I’m alright. I’m still at Motou’s.”
Rishid got back in the car and sat there. “Did Yami return?”
“No…Yugi is asleep. I don’t know what’s going to happen with them…”
“You’re watching him right now, aren’t you?”
“Yes, how did you know?” Shadi laughed into the phone and Rishid smiled as well.
“Shadi, he has to make his own decisions –”
“But wouldn’t it be wonderful to have him? He’s so wonderful and playful Rishid –”
“Shadi. We’ll talk about it later.”
“Coming here or going home?”
“Neither, I have to track down Yami and then I’ll see.”
“Alright. I love you my Lion.”
“And you as well my Love.”
He hung up and drove back to FFFC headquarters. It was going to be a long night.
****
When Yugi woke up, his tail hurt. He’d been sleeping on it wrong all night and now there were kinks in it. He gave a yowl and got out of bed, shuffling around in fuzzy monster slippers. He went downstairs and saw Shadi sleeping on the couch. He pushed his shoulder.
“Hey…good morning.”
Shadi slowly sat up and nodded. “Yes…I have a pain in my neck…”
Yugi laughed softly. “I have a pain in my tail. Let’s have cereal!”
“Hm…” Shadi got up and washed his face first, making a note to stop home and see if Rishid had actually gone home. The man was notorious for sleeping at the office.
Yugi followed him the whole time, wanting to be carried or asking for different food, until Shadi actually went to the kitchen. Yugi sat in his seat, waiting to be served, clapping when he got cereal.
He watched the boy eat as he brewed some coffee, happy to have called ahead to the federal prison. He wasn’t awake yet.
The doorbell rang and Shadi went to get it, Yugi starting to eat out of the box. He knew he’d regret that one later.
It was Rishid with an overnight bag. “I brought you some clothes and toothpaste!”
“You’re a life saver. Did you sleep in the Center again?”
“I wasn’t the only one!”
“Rishid…” he chastised, taking the bag and leaving for upstairs. “Watch Yugi.”
Rishid went into the kitchen and the youth beamed, continuing to grab fistfuls of cereal out of the box sans milk. The man laughed and poured the boy some milk.
“You’ve got to learn some table manners Yugi, how will anyone ever take you anywhere?”
The boy swallowed. “Grandpa says I’m not allowed in fancy places.” He ate more and the man raised his eyebrow.
“Oh yeah?”
“And he doesn’t like me going to school and for a long time I didn’t I just got to stay home and watch tv! That was fun…but Yami said it wasn’t good for me or something, that I wouldn’t be developed or whatever.” Yugi found a tiny toy car and tossed it on the floor. “Ugh…”
Rishid watched the boy eat, wondering why no one had bothered to correct him in sixteen years.
“Yugi, when you lived with Mai –uh, your Mistress, didn’t anyone teach you anything?”
The boy nodded and sat up straighter in his chair, positioning his ears and fluffing his tail. “Judges like this.”
The man could only blink. Apparently, Yugi acted the way he did because no one bothered to teach him other wise. No wonder the boy was socially retarded.
“Well…we’ll change that soon.”
Yugi shrugged and continued to eat. Soon enough, Shadi came back down and cleared away the dishes, Yugi sitting there still eating out of the box.
“Rishid, take the box away from him.”
“I tried but he hissed at me.”
Shadi shook his head. “Be firm with him. Pretend he’s Malik.”
Rishid reached for the cereal box and Yugi growled at him, still eating away. When Rishid took the box the boy whimpered.
“Hey!” Yugi got up and reached for the box. “I’m still eating!”
“You’re done. We’re going to see Grandpa remember?”
The kitten huffed and stormed away, muttering about cereal. Rishid shook his head. “This is going to be more trouble than I thought…”
“I wish Yami were here…He’d be able to help us…”
“Hm…”
Upstairs, Yugi just got back into bed. He was tired after eating so much. Someone knocked and he didn’t move.
“Yugi, I said get dressed.”
“Go away.” He muttered.
Shadi went over to the Neko’s closet and laid out some clothes. “Wear this.”
Yugi didn’t even look at it. “I’m not wearing that. Go away.”
“Yugi.” Shadi made him sit up and Yugi did the best impression of a rag doll he knew, making it difficult for Shadi to even begin to dress him. Rishid came in eventually and before the growling Neko knew it, he was in the back seat of their car, heading out of the city.
I want to go home…
****
Yami woke up feeling warm and secure, giving several light purrs before he opened his eyes. When his crimson eyes opened to see bricks, he shot up, disoriented.
“Something wrong?”
He turned his head to look behind him, heart still thumping as he watched Amelda enter the bedroom with slow ease, settling back down on the bed.
“I…I didn’t know where I was that’s all.”
“Yeah, I think it’s weird that this one wall in here is brick…I used to wake up thinking I was in the alley.”
Yami turned to look at the wall and calmed himself, happy to see that he was still wearing his pants. He wagged the tip of his tail slowly, looking back down at the bed and then at the wall.
What am I doing here?
Amelda came around and turned his face, kissing him and Yami relaxed even more.
He asked me to stay…
The red haired Neko’s hands went to his collar and Yami pulled back. “No…”
“Why not, you won’t need that here with me.”
“I’m not taking off my collar.”
Amelda leaned him into the bed. “Not even for me?”
Yami stared into his eyes. “Why are you doing this to me?”
“Am I hurting you?”
“No…but it feels like you could. I don’t want to take off my collar or my pants or anything else.”
Amelda searched his eyes and Yami watched him, trying to figure out what he was looking for. He didn’t have enough time though because Amelda leaned up and licked the inside of his ear, making him shiver.
“It’ll be alright.” Amelda slid down beside him and hugged him to his chest. Yami just laid there, staring at the wall, the Neko behind him beginning to groom him gently.
No one’s done this for me in years…
He began to purr steadily and began to doze off, not minding the necessary licks that turned into kisses.
Yugi… his mind whispered before he fell asleep again.
****
Yugi sat in the large waiting room with Rishid bored out of his mind. He kept making faces at the Rottweiler Inu guards and kicking his feet. Soon though, Shadi came out of the big metallic door and beckoned to Yugi.
He hopped up, swishing his tail in the Inu’s face and went inside. He was shown to another door, happy that he didn’t have to have Shadi walk with him anymore. He opened the door and poked his head in.
“Meow?” he asked cutely, wiggling his tail.
“Yugi?”
The man at the table looked haggard, the black bandana he usually wore was replaced with a dark blue prison issue one and he was unshaven.
“GRANDPA!” the kitten cried, leaping the distance and sliding on top of the table. Yugi stopped before he could reach the man but scrambled over the surface to jump into his arms, purring and nuzzling him.
The man hugged the kitten tightly, rubbing his back and murmuring his name over and over.
“Grandpa, you have to come home! Yami didn’t come home and they took my cereal away from me and then I had to spend the night with Malik and he wouldn’t let me go and Marik got hurt and we went to Kaiba’s and he told all these lies and then I went to sleep!”
Sugoroku chuckled and stroked Yugi’s ears. “You went to sleep? While some one was talking! Yugi, what have I said about such bad manners?”
“But it was so boring Grandpa and he kept saying that you were a bad man and Yami was saying it too but I know you’d never do all that bad stuff! You’re so nice to everyone…” Yugi sighed and leapt back on the table, dangling his feet over the edge.
“They tried to take me to get clothes for school, but I told them that you buy my clothes. When are they letting you come home Grandpa?”
The man watched the wide eyed kitten, guilt swirling in his heart. Yugi thought he was so innocent, that he was his Grandpa, the kind old man who ran the Neko toy shop. He reached out and rubbed the kitten’s knee.
“I’m not sure Yugi, but I’ll be just fine in here!”
“No!” Yugi whined. “I want you to come home! I want some cupcakes!”
“Well, I don’t think you should have any cup cakes if you ate so much cereal…but I’ll tell you what, when Grandpa comes home….he’ll make you a big cake! And I’ll put your name on it so everyone will know!”
The kitten nodded and leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, chin in hands. “And when’s that?”
“I don’t know…” He stroked the boy’s ears. “Are you alright? These are good clothes did you pick them out?”
“No…” he grumped. “Shadi and Rishid came and they made me wear these.”
Sugoroku smiled. So they’re taking care of him, that’s good… He cupped Yugi’s face.
“I want you to listen to them while I’m gone alright?”
“no!”
“Yes?”
“…No.”
Sugoroku gave Yugi a look and the boy nodded. “Say it out loud Yugi.”
“Yes…I’ll listen to them…but Grandpa I –”
“Yugi.”
“Yes?”
“Shh. What did you do yesterday?”
The kitten sat up and started rambling on about all the things he did and what he dreamed when he went to sleep gesturing grandly with his hands and kicking his feet, laughing occasionally. Sugoroku just watched, smiling gently.
“Then! I thought I caught the bug…but it wasn’t a bug, it was an egg and it went squish in my hands…” he held them out. “Say Grandpa…”
“Yes?”
“Can I call you while you’re here at Camp?”
The man blinked. “Camp?”
“Yeah! This is like Camp right? So they have to let you call home and stuff! Can I call you?”
Sugoroku glanced behind him to the guard in the corner who shook his head.
“Well…I’ll call you, how about that?”
“Everyday?” the boy chirped.
“Everyday!” He ruffled Yugi’s hair and the boy laughed, moving into his lap.
Yugi purred and ran his finger over Sugoroku’s shoulder. “I love you Grandpa.”
The man’s voice caught and he gasped softly, fighting tears. How could he tell Yugi that he’d never get out of this place? That he’d probably get death for the things he’d done?
“I…I love you too Yugi-chan.”
“Forever?”
“Yes. Forever.”
And they stayed that way awhile, the Kitten muttering things to him at which he laughed, wanting this moment to last forever.
Outside of the two way mirror, Shadi looked at Rishid.
“…he was telling the truth. Look at him.”
Rishid crossed his arms. “Shadi, he is not going to take the truth well.”
“The truth!?” Shadi hushed. “What truth do we tell him? That he’s been genetically engineered to be a kitten forever? That he’ll never grow up mentally or physically once he hits twenty-one? Did you here him, that he wants to be a pet forever?”
“I know you’re angry at the experiments Kaiba Corp did…just be thankful Yugi didn’t have a hard life because of them –”
“RISHID!” Shadi yelled. “Are we going to be the ones to tell him that Sugoroku is never coming home?! What are we going to do?”
“Well…you wanted to adopt Yugi anyway didn’t you? We’ll just bring him home with us –”
“He’ll never come with us if he thinks Sugoroku is coming home…”
The tall man looked the through the window, watching Yugi demonstrate his soccer kick to the old man.
Shadi’s right…what are we going to tell him…
Back inside, Yugi’s ears drooped when he saw the Inu guard approach Sugoroku.
“That’s it old man, time’s up.”
“No!” Yugi cried. “No! Grandpa!’
“Yugi, it’s alright. I’ll call you tomorrow, how about that?”
The kitten stood there, wiggling his tail. “Okay…I guess…”
“Alright then. Bye Yugi.”
Yugi watched his Grandpa disappear through another metal door, running after him too late to catch up. The door slammed in his face and his ears flattened.
Grandpa…
Shadi came through the visitor entrance and smiled. “Alright, let’s go Yugi. Want to go to the park or –”
Yugi walked past him and out of the prison, clawing at the guards who tried to search him and going to wait beside the car.
Why wasn’t Grandpa coming home?
He stared down at the ground and thought about the things the man had whispered to him.
“Yugi-chan…I’ve done a lot of bad things, that’s why I’m here. Kaiba-san was telling you the truth. I’m a bad man. I’m going to be here for a long time, but I want you to behave and if you’re really good, I’ll come home, alright?”
And he hadn’t believed him still, he told his Grandpa that he still loved him and that he wasn’t a bad person, but the man kept telling him that he was a bad person.
“Yugi, please understand, please? You can still love me if that’s your choice, but I’ve hurt a lot of people alright? Understand?”
And he didn’t. He didn’t want to understand that the man who loved and cared for had done so many horrible things. Just like he didn’t want to believe that Atemu was really dead or that he’d seen Keith kill him or the Mistress. He didn’t want to believe it and if he tried hard enough, he wouldn’t have to.
He started laughing to himself softly, holding himself and rocking a little as he leaned against the car.
He didn’t have to do anything anyone said if he didn’t want to so he wouldn’t.
Grandpa’s coming home, Yami’s coming home and when they do, I’m getting a big cake. They’ll see. Everyone will see that Kaiba’s just a big fat liar and Grandpa is the nicest man in the world.
****
Rishid and Shadi sat on the couch watching tv in the Motou home, Shadi looking at the clock.
“Do you think he’s alright? He hasn’t been making noise since we came home! That was seven hours ago.”
“Maybe he’s sleeping.” The taller man suggested, yawning. “Or reading or something. He’s capable of being quiet you know. Not even Malik is a fire cracker all the time.”
Shadi sighed. “I guess…I’m still going to check on him.”
The man went upstairs and knocked on the door. “Yugi?” He pushed inside gently, watching ear tips appear from the other side of the bed. “Yugi?”
“What?” the boy looked over the side of the bed and stood up.
“What are you doing? You’re being quiet.”
“I’m doing a puzzle.”
“Oh…what do you want for dinner?”
“Cereal.”
“We’re not having cereal Yugi. I’ll cook something alright.”
The boy just ignored him and sat back down. Shadi sighed and left the room.
Yugi stared at the puzzle pieces, the rubbed his forehead again. The pieces began to move around again and put themselves together, the kitten putting some pieces together with his hands when he couldn’t figure out how they went together otherwise.
When the puzzle was finished, he looked at a tiny stop watch.
Only an hour and a half this time…
He smiled and messed up the puzzle again, thinking of what his Grandpa told him.
“You’re a lot smarter than people think. I want you to start concentrating and use your power. That way, you’ll be able to take care of yourself one day. Alright?”
Yugi swished his tail against the hardwood floor.
Someday I’ll be able to take care of us both Grandpa.

He began rocking in place, twitching his tail this way and that, humming to himself when something overshadowed him.
“Are you okay?”
