Chapter 16: If Only

Yami stood, his head hanging as the tears streamed down his face but he kept his cries in. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Joey.

“Hey. It’s gonna be okay. Yugi’s strong. He’ll make it.”

Yami looked away again but Joey shifted the pharaoh’s shoulders so he was facing him.
“But however strong he is…he needs you at his side.”

Yami looked into his eyes.

“He can’t do this alone.”

Yami nodded. “Thank you.”

“Go on.” Joey jerked his head toward the boy on the table.

Yami took a deep breath and wiped the tears from his eyes and cheeks before he went to offer his support. He held his head high and took his first step.

“Aright, Yugi. I need you to look into my eyes for me,” Isis said soothingly.

Yugi complied though it pained him to move.

Isis nodded her head. “Okay. I need those leaves now!” she shouted over her shoulder.

“What leaves?” Yami asked as he came up on the other side of the table.

“Mint leaves. It’s to calm him and his pain.”

“But…we sell crushed mint leaves to the Greeks for…” realization hit him and he was not happy. “You are going to stone him just before he gives birth?!”

“We do it to all other patients. Unless, that is, you want him to feel every little incision we do.”

Yami’s expression softened as he shook his head.

“Yami…”

He looked down into Yugi’s pained face.

“What’s happening?”

Yami bit his lower lip to keep it from trembling. “Th-They’re…going to do a C section. There’s no other way.”

Yugi nodded once. “It’s okay, Yami.” He reached over and grasped Yami’s hand in his own. “The gods are on our side.”

Isis scurried over.
“Okay, Yugi. Now listen to me very carefully.” She held up a small cup shaped attachment on the end of a hose that led to a kind of pot. “I am going to put this on your nose and I need you to breath very deeply through your nose and breath out through your mouth, alright? This is going to make you feel a bit strange.”

Yugi nodded to show he understood.

Isis laid the cup over his nose and Yugi sniffed it in and immediately cringed.

“This smells weird.”

“It will for a few more seconds but in a while it won’t smell like anything. Just keep breathing.”

Soon Yugi felt dizzy and so disoriented he had no idea what the hell was going on or who anyone was.

“Look into my eyes for me.”
Yugi didn’t respond to Isis’s submission.
“Yugi…”
Again, no response.
“He’s ready. Do you have everything set?”

Another assistant nodded and brought over a tray of sharp objects.

Yami muffled a sob at the very thought of what they were to do. Isis noted this.

“Sire, maybe it best if you step to the side with the others.”

Yami thought. ‘But, I have to be here for him. For support. He needs me.’

“There’s nothing more you can do for him, now. You’ve given your support and he knows that. It’s okay.”

Yami turned and headed the other way but felt so guilty for leaving his lover’s side while he was in his largest time of need. But she was right. What more could he do for him?...nothing.

Isis took a deep lungful of air to calm her nerves she always got before something big.
“Hand me the blade.”
**

“I can’t do this…I can’t do this…” Yami repeated over and over as he hyperventilated.

“Yami, you’re not going to help Yugi if you pass out now,” Kaiba alleged.

Yami felt a hand grab his own and squeeze it for comfort. He looked over to see Dalila.

“Don’t worry, Pharaoh. Yugi’s been in worse things than this. He’ll pull through.”

‘I only wish I could be that confident.’
With that last thought, Yami closed his eyes and tried to calm himself the best he could.

“WWAAAAA!!!!”

Yami’s eyes shot open at the sound. Was it human?

“Gods…” he heard Joey mutter beside him.

The maids had their hands over their mouths hiding their smiling, gaping mouths.

“Yami…look,” his cousin whispered.

The Pharaoh was frightened at what he would see but nonetheless turned agonizingly slow. The sound never stopped but it seemed to make Yami’s tension increase. As he looked at all the people in the room, he traced the sound to a particular man…or, more specific, a particular newborn.

The baby was cold, wet, and naked and screaming its lungs out from the uncomfortable situation he had been roughly thrown into.

Yami’s eyes teared at the sight. His baby…his and Yugi’s baby was alive and breathing. It took everything in him just to believe what it was he saw. He watched at the man who carried the child take it to a bowl of warm water and clean it off.

“It’s a girl.”

Yami practically lost his grip on reality.

“I…I have a baby girl…I HAVE A BABY GIRL!”

Everyone jumped up and down at the event and hoped and hollered.

But their rejoicing didn’t last too long.

“Okay guys. Sow him up.”

“But we already did.”

Isis looked worried. “Then why is he still bleeding from his cut?”

Isis moved up to Yugi’s head.
“Yugi? Yugi can you hear me?”

Yugi had a pained expression as he wheezed trying to breath.
“It…hurts…”

Then his eyes rolled to the back of his head and he passed out.

“No! Yugi! Yugi, stay with me! Yugi look at me!”

“What’s going on?!” Yami insisted.

“Shit! His blood isn’t clotting. He’s loosing too much blood.”

Yami, hearing this, tried to pry his way through the crowd of doctors.

“Let me through!”

“I’m sorry sire! But they need their space to work!” one of the doctors said as he and two others tried to hold him back.

“No Yugi! You can’t die! Please don’t die! Our child needs you!”

Everyone was calling for him to wake up but he never moved.

“Take the leaves away!” Isis barked as the man holding the piece on removed it letting the boy get air.
“Come on Yugi! Wake up.”

Isis lowered her self to his face but didn’t feel air coming from his mouth or nose. She went lower and listened for his heart beat but heard nothing.

“Oh Ra…” he whispered to herself. She looked down at his stomach to see it stopped bleeding…because his blood was no longer pumping.

Yami watched Isis’ mouth move an form the words

“He’s gone.”

To Yami, his entire world collapsed. All movement seemed to be slow motion and all sounds seemed to be muffled like he had wads of cotton shoved in his ears.

Kaiba looked over at his cousin to see his catatonic state.

“Yami…Yami!”

The called man looked up with a blank expression.
“…he’s gone…”

“No Yami! You don’t know that!”

Yami shook his head.
“No…Isis just said…said he’s…he’s…”

Yami’s knees gave out as Kaiba reached out and held him up, Yami clinging to him for dear life.

“OH RA!! WHY DI THIS HAPPEN?!! WHY DAMN IT! WHY!!”

Kaiba had tears in his eyes watching his family scream from grief.

“He was supposed to live! Ra said he would live!! He can’t die!!! Ra said he would…live…he said he…live…said…”

Yami subsided into Kaiba’s chest and cried loudly as Kaiba held him tight.

“I’m sorry, Yami,” Kaiba whispered. “I’m so sorry…”

Yami cried for what seemed forever until he couldn’t cry anymore.

“Sire…”

Yami, not wanting to acknowledge anyone, growled.
“Go away…”

“But Sire, your child…”

Yami raised his head and turned to see the man holding his baby.

Yami weakly reached out and took the babe into his arms. He cradled her the best he knew and looked into her sweet face. Her hair was just starting to sprout: amethyst with scarlet highlights and gold framing her face.
She opened her eyes and Yami gasped at the color. One was a deep violet while the other was a dark crimson.

“She’s so beautiful…”

The child squirmed and cooed in delight as Yami chuckled at her antics.

Yami looked up to see the motionless Yugi on the table. He had been cleaned of all the dried blood and was left just lying there.

Yami looked down and the child again and started to walk to the boy.

“Yami, wha…” Joey started but Kaiba stopped her. She looked back to see him shake his head and watch the other.

Yami looked down at Yugi right below him yet so far away.

“Yugi…” Yami tried but received no answer. “Yugi, look. It’s a girl. We have a baby girl. Isn’t she beautiful?”

Yami laid the child on Yugi’s outstretched arm. He looked at the sight and his heart felt the pang of ultimate hurt again. He kneeled.
“Yugi, why did you have to leave? Why did you leave me and your only child? We need you here with us…please come back…”

Yami lowered his head into his crossed arms on the tabled and cried.

The baby squirmed in the blanket she had been wrapped in and twisted so she looked up into the lifeless face that had just given her birth. She tilted her head and wriggled some more. She slipped up to Yugi’s face and peered at it with curiosity. She reached out her hand and touched his cheek with her little hand.

Yugi’s heart shifted into gear as it started beating rapidly and his lungs took in a large intake of air. He tried to shift through his stiffness but groaned in pain from the incision in his abdomen.

Yami jerked his head up and saw Yugi shifting and turning. His mouth hung in disbelief.

“Y…Yugi?” he whispered not wanting to break the reverie he so wanted to be real.

Yugi opened his lazy and warn out eyes to his caller and smiled.
“Yami…”

Yami shook his head.
“You came back from the dead?” he asked a bit afraid.

Yugi tried to shrug. “I don’t know.”

He heard a small coo from his right and turned his head to see the baby laughing and making noises.
“Yami…it was her…she brought me back.”

“What?” Yami asked.

“The baby. She is the child of legend and is to be the Ruler of Prophecy. Yami…she saved me.”

They both looked at the child who doesn’t seem to know the remarkable task she had just accomplished but smiled.

“She’s gorgeous,” Yugi said as he scuttled the baby.

Yami nodded his tears streaming down his face in rivulets that would never end.

“Yes. She looks just like you.”

Yugi smiled at the Yami. “Like you, too.”

Yami smiled warmly down at the other, not believing their luck.
“I thought I’d lost you…”

Yugi smiled lovingly. “You did.” He sighed through his exhaustion. “Do you want to know what paradise is like?”

Yami laughed. “Not right now.” He lowered himself and lifted kissed Yugi so lovingly that they both started to cry together.

The fear that they would never be together again seemed to have been too much for the couple and so they let their emotions free mutually. As they broke, they both smiled and watched their child laugh at their clowning around.

“What do you think we should name her?” Yugi asked.

Yami smiled. “How about Amunet?”

“That’s perfect.”
