The Viking Brothers
Chapter 15: Where Do Loyalties Lie?
“What the HELL were you thinking?! And with KEITH of all people!” Malik didn’t say anything. “I figured out your little plan! You’re jea of of the brats I’ve sired and all the servants I’ve been with! LOOK AT ME WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU!!” Malik felt more fear bubble up inside of him at the loud tone of Marik’s voice. But he did as he was told and looked up at Marik.
“So you think that by whoring yourself with someone I despise will make ME jealous, right?!” Malik still didn’t respond. “Well, you succeeded in only pissing me off! Let me tell you something about those servants, okay! Many of them are MINE, just like you are! They know the rules of being in my possession, and one of those rules is they can only spread their legs for ME! If I find out otherwise, they’re in for a WORLD of hurt! And you’re going to experience that now, slut!” Malik finally stood up and opened his mouth to say something.
“You’re nothing but a whoremonger and a spoiled brat!” Marik glared evilly at him, daring him to continue. “You think you’re such a great lover, but I’ve DEFINITELY had better!” Malik knew that what he just said was a lie, but he had to defend himself in some way. But seeing those eyes turn almost red with rage, he realized his mistake in his words. Marik lifted his hand up again, and Malik started to cower.
“Marik, don’t do this! Please, I-“ Marik suddenly backhanded Malik brutally, causing him to land on the floor with a thud. Malik felt more blood seep from his already busted lip and his right cheek felt like it was on fire. He looked up at Marik in fright and shock. Malik tried to ignore the pain and stood up, making a run for the door. But Marik blocked him, and Malik had to run the other way. There wasn’t that much furniture in the room to use as a barricade, so Malik had to make due with what he had. He threw a chair into Marik’s path, but it didn’t stop him.
“You’re only making it harder on yourself, Malik!” Marik shouted close behind him. Malik tried to jump over the bed, but Marik grabbed him by his hair, preventing it. Malik cried out, clutching the back of his hair, trying to relieve the pressure. Marik swung him around to face him, and he struggled in his grasp. He tried to scream, but Marik bent down and gripped his throat, pulling him up and against the wall. He began slamming Malik’s back into the stone wall.
“How dare you betray me!”
He slammed Malik down onto the room table, the wood breaking under him by the force of his body and the slam. Malik felt his back twist in pain as it hit the wood surface. Terrified for his life, he brought his knee up to Marik’s groin, making Marik stumble off of him. He scrambled up and tried to run, but his back gave out, causing him to land roughly on the floor and twist his ankle. Malik yelped out as the paiavelaveled through his entire body, leaving him immobile. Now, he was trapped, unable to escape Marik’s wrath.
Marik got back up again, ignoring the pain and stalking back to the fallen Malik. He grabbed Malik by his wrist and lifted him up fully in the air, his feet dangling. Marik carried him over to the bed as if he was nothing more than a rag doll and tossed him on it. Malik whimpered in fear and pain as he knew what Marik was going to do. He clutched his eyes shut and turned his head away. When nothing was happening, he cautiously opened his eyes. Marik wasn’t doing anything, but just had a look of pure disgust on his face.
“On second thought, I don’t wanna be where Keith has been.” Malik’s eyes widened at the comment. “I want you out of my room!” Marik gripped Malik’s hair once again and pulled him off the bed. His back hit the stone floor and he cried out, clutching the base of his hair.
“I’m sorry Marik! I’m so sorry!! Please-“ Marik ignored the pleas and opened the door, tossing Malik out. Malik rolled as he hit the floor, new pain emitting from his back and ankle. He tried to lift his head, but Marik’s foot pushed in back down to the floor.
“I spit on whores!” And Marik did just that before he turned awnd lnd left Malik’s battered body. “You aren’t so tough.” Malik just laid there, immobile from pain and shock. His plan had backfired brutally! A few tears slipped down his cheeks.
Yami’s Room:
Yami stopped outside his door as he heard Yugi giggling on the other side. He figured he must be playing with Beowulf. He HAD to tell him about Tea and his son. Yugi was such a kind and caring person, it couldn’t be that bad. He took a deep breath and opened the door to his room. There, Yugi was on the floor playing with Beowulf, just as he expected. Yugi looked up and smiled as he entered the room. Beowulf wagged his stubby tail, also excited about Yami’s presence. Yami cleared his throat.
“How do you like it here, Yugi?”
“I like it a lot, Yami! It’s so warm and clean! I thought I could only dream about living pla place like this!” Yami chuckled.
“Well, I hope you will consider this your home, now?” Yugi smiled and nodded happily.
“I’ll always be home as long as I’m with you, Yami!” Yami’s heart melted at those words and he suddenly scooped Yugi up by his waist and swung him around. Yugi laughed out loud as he wrapped his arms around Yami’s neck to keep from sliding off.
“I love it when you say things like that!”
“Slow down, Yami! I’m getting dizzy!” Yugi laughed and Yami stopped his spinning, gently seg hig his bundle on the bed. Yugi kissed him on the nose and hugged around his rib cage. “I love you so much, Yami!”
Yami didn’t want to tell Yugi about everything now after those sweet words! What was he to do? He HAD to tell him the truth sometime, and if he didn’t tell him, someone else would. It would be better if he heard it from him.
“Um, Yugi? I need to tell you something.”
“What is it, Yami?” Yami sat down next to him on the bed, rubbing his hands together. It isn’t often he gets nervous, and his palms were slick with sweat. He couldn’t remember the last time he was this nervous.
“Well, Yugi....you see, I should have told you this before.” Yugi cocked his head to the side. “Well, I was...but I’m not anymore!!” Yugi blinked.
“Wasn’t ‘what’ Yami?” Yami gulped.
“I was...before I went to England...well, I was married!” Yugi blinked.
“Married?”
“Yeah, butI’mnotanymore!!!”
“Um...a little bit slower, Yami?”
“I’m not married anymore, though. I never loved her, and she never loved me. It was an arranged marriage for political reasons. I just found out from my uncle that she ran off with another man, thank the gods, and I’m a free man again!” Yugi just stared at him. “Uh...I know, I should have told you before. I’m sorry, Yugi.”
“No, no. It’s okay, Yami. I understand all those forced marriages, and it’s not your fault. Just as long as you don’t have any ties to her, then it’s okay with me!” Yugi smiled and took Yami’s hand, nuzzling it to his face. Yami breathed a sigh of relief.
“And, there’s one other thing, Yugi.” Yugi nodded for him to continue. “Well, you said you understand about arranged marriages and all that, and you know their MAIN purpose, right?” Yugi shook his head and Yami frowned. He reacted well to the first confession. “Since I’m lord of this castle, I need an heir. And apparently, while I was away, I’ve been gifted with a son.” Yugi’s eyes widened and Yami felt fear bubble up in him again.
“Oh, well...congratulations, Yami. You must be very happy!” Yugi smiled happily, trying to hide his sadness. He didn’t want Yami to know he was upset about the whole thing. It’s true, he understood why people in Yami’s position had to be married off, but the thought of it hurt. Yami with another person didn’t settle very well with him. Yami is his first, and only, lover he had his entire life.
Now he thinks he understands what Malik was saying on the boat, about how he gets mad at the thought of anyone else with Marik. And Yami forbade him to see other people other than him. If this is what that ‘jealousy’ and ‘possession’ is, he didn’t know how to handle it. He didn’t like the feeling, and DEFINITELY didn’t like the idea of Yami sleeping with someone else! But, Yami looked so upset, and he said he didn’t love his wife. So, he managed to come up with an answer.
“You don’t have to worry, Yami. Lets leave what’s in the past, in the past. We can move on from here!” Yami smiled and hugged Yugi close.
“This is such a relief for me, Yugi! I was worried that I might loss.” Y.” Yugi hugged him back tight.
“Don’t worry Yami! I’m not going anywhere, I promise you!!” They pulled away from each other and Yami took Yugi’s face in his hands.
“I hope you live up to that promise.” Yugi smiled.
“I always make promises I can keep, Yami! You can count on that!”
At the stables....
Seto had some work to do with getting hou household back together so Jou figured he’d pass the time by exploring the kennels. Keeper of the dogs...was that even a real job?! Jou frowned, they were just making fun of him. He stopped in front of the stables, seeing Tristan inside grooming one of the many horses. Jou smiled and hurried inside, eager to talk to his friend then hang with dogs!
“Hey Tris!” Tristan smiled as Jou entered the stables.
“Hey Jou! I heard about your assigned job. Keeper of the dogs, huh?” Tristan snickered as Jou growled low in his throat.
“Whose side are you on!?”
“Alright, I’m sorry. That WAS rude of me...but it is funny!” Jou crossed his arms.
“Ha, ha.” He said, dryly. “Well, at least my life doesn’t revolve around animals.” Tristan raised a bow at Jou’s remark.
“What do you mean by that?” Jou plopped himself down on a pile of hay.
“What I mean is, you spend to much time with animals when you should be getting out more. Look at me, I have someone special to share my life with. You, on the other hand, are always alone. Even at the camp you stayed in the stables.” Tristan went back to brushing an all brown horse’s mane.
“I feel more secure around animals. They’re friendly and you can trust them.” He patted the horse’s back. “They won’t say anything that could hurt you.” Jou rolled his eyes.
“You need a lover, my friend.” Tristan humphed.
“Easier said than done.” Jou grinned.
“I could always hook you up!” Tristan glared at him.
“Hell no! Remember that time back home when you set me up with that girl who I had found out was only 12?!” Jou frowned.
“She looked older than that! Honest mistake!”
“She was also a maniac!” Jou thought for a second, then nodded.
“I guess you’re right. But then again, she WAS the only girl in town who offered to go out with you.” Tristan rolled his eyes. “Hey! What about Duke?!” Tristan dropped his brush in surprise.
“W-what!?”
“Duke! He’s another one who needs to get laid. Badly.” Tristan flushed lightly.
“And what does this have to do with me?!” Jou crossed his arms.
“Obviously Tris, I’m saying you should get together with Duke!” Tristan ‘eeped’ and dropped the brush once again.
“OUT OF THE QUESTION!!” Jou was taken aback by Tristan’s tone of voice.
“Wh-why?”
“Well...he’s...he’s like...well, I grew up with the guy! It would be so....weird.”
“Is that all?”
“And he’s a wench!!” Jou let out a laugh.
“Well, then that’s all the more reason! He’s automatically the bitch, Tristan! That’s good news for you!” Tristan blushed bright red and went to pick up the brush. He began stroking the brush roughly over the fur, making the horse snort. Damn that Jou and his big mouth!
“Don’t you have some dogs to look after! I’m busy here and you’re keeping me from my work!” Jou sighed and stood up.
“Fine, I see how it is. I’m just a guy trying to help a friend out, and this is how he treats me.”
“Don’t throw that guilt crap with me, Jou!” Jou placed his hand over his heart.
“You make my heart bleed with your cruel words.” Tristan waved his hand.
“Yeah, yeah. Why don’t you go find Seto and bother him.” Jou stomped his foot
“If I could, I would! But he’s busy organizing the castle and he doesn’t have time for me today!” Tristan snickered. “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all. I hear those dogs barking awfully loud, they must be hungry!” Jou humphed and headed for the stable doors.
“I’m not even going to say anything this time. Just think about what I said, okay buddy? And I’ll see ya at dinner. Later.”
“Yeah, later.”
After Yami had his nice talk with Yugi, he sent his lover off to treat him to special bath whhe she showed his brothers their new nephew. The three men looked down at the sleeping bundle wrapped in linens. Bakura poked at it, then Yami slapped his hand away.
“Ow! What was that for?!” Bakura nearly shouted, rubbing his hand.
“Don’t poke my kid!” Yami growled back.
“Congrats, Yami!” Marik said. “I’m quite surprised that YOU of all people could sire a kid! Much less a boy!” Yami’s fists shook in rage and he grinned evilly.
“And why would you say that, dear brother?” Marik showed no fear.
“Well, given the way you look and act, not many women, or men for that matter, want to share your bed.” Yami lunged over the crib and gripped Marik’s neck, shaking him like a rag doll.
“Unlike you, you bastard, I do it the PROPER way!! You don’t see 50 million of MY kids running around here, do you!?” Marik pulled Yami’s hands off of his neck. “Just how many kids DO you have, Marik!?” Marik laughed nervously and sweatdropped.
“I-I don’t know, I lost count long ago. Besides, it’s not my problem!” Marik ducked as a flying vase flew past his head.
“You truly are a bastard! Why does Malik even put up with you!?” Marik glared at his brother.
“Do NOT mention that name to me again!” Yami and Bakura looked at each other in surprise.
“Did something happen between you two?” Bakura asked.
“Just the thought of it makes me sick!”
“Well, what happened?” Yami asked, eager to know.
“Mind your own business!” Marik snapped, crossing his arms. Bakura snorted and said.
“Well, to hell with you! We were only asking!” The soun a b a baby cry suddenly ripped through the room, alerting their attention. “What’s wrong with it?!”
“It’s crying you num nut!” Yami said, whacking him outside the head.
“What do we do?!?” Marik asked nervously.
“Call a servant to take care of it!!” Bakura shouted over the baby’s cry.
“But all the servants are with Seto right now!” Marik held his ears.
“SOMEONE MAKE THAT CRYING STOP!” Bakura reached down into the crib and began patting the baby on the head.
“Be quiet now little...uh, what’s his name?!” Yami shook his head.
“I don’t know!” Marik glared at him.
“You don’t even know your own kid’s name!? And you call ME a bastard!!”
“Shut up, Marik!”
“Make me!”
While Yami and Marik were having their spat, Bakura couldn’t take the crying any longer and had to do something. With shaky hands, he lifted the baby up and cradled it into his arms. He remembered watching on of the servant women carrying a baby and tried to mimic it. To his luck, the baby stopped crying and began to coo. Yami and Marik’s spat stopped when the sound of silence eased the ringing in their ears. They both turned to Bakura who held the baby.
“Awww!!!” Marik said, batting his eyelashes. “That is SUCH a cute picture!” Yami tried not to laugh, but his shaking shoulders couldn’t hide it. “Baby and Uncle, together for the first time. Spring must be on the way! Wait until I tell the guys about this!!” After he said that, he could have SWORN he saw Bakura’s hair and eyes turn to flames.
“If you do that, I’ll feed you to the Midgard Serpent!” [1] Marik gulped and hid behind Yami, fearful of his brother’s sudden rage. “At least I got the kid to be quiet!”
“Yes, thank you Bakura.” Yami said. “Now, we need to think of a name. Uncle Pegasus told me that Tea didn’t name him, so I have to. Help me think of names.”
“How about Yami Jr.?” Marik suggested, popping up from behind Yami.
“Nah, to normal.” Yami answered. “What about you, Bakura?”
“Let’s call him Runt!” Yami rolled his eyes.
“We’re not going to name my kid after an insult!” Marik snickered.
“But Bakura, Runt was one of dad’s many nicknames for you!” Bakura glared at him again, making Marik retreat back behind Yami.
“I know, I’ll ask Yugi!” Yami said happily. “He knows all kinds of names! Come on, lets go find him!”
“Wouldn’t he be with Seto and the other servants?” Bakura brought to his attention.
“He shouldn’t be. I told him to stay in the room and rest up a bit. Besides, he’s my personal servant and doesn’t need training from Seto. Now come on! I’m eager to have my son named!”
Ryou wondered the halls with Duke, helping his friend carry some baskets of laundry. Duke felt no need to meet with Seto like the others, but just went about doing his job. The two talked about random things as they tried to find the basement where the wash tubs were. There was a sudden sound of sobbing echoing in the hall, making the two boys stop in their tracks. Ryou noticed a piece of fabric peeking out from behind a large ceramic pot.
“Hello?” Ryou asked, waiting for a reply.
“Ryou, is that you?” Ryou gasped as he recognized Malik’s voice.
“Malik?! What are you doing behind that pot?” Malik peeked his head around from the side of the pot, his eyes red from crying and his face badly bruised. “Oh my god, Malik! Whatever happened to you?!” Malik sniffed and hid back behind the pot.
rik.rik.” was all he said. Ryou looked at Duke worriedly and ran to kneel down next to his friend. Duke laid his laundry basket down and joined Ryou next to Malik.
“Did Marik beat you?” Duke asked, referring to Malik’s battered face.
“Y-yes....but I deserved it.” Ryou grasped his shoulders.
“No you didn’t, Malik! No one deserves to get beaten!”
“What happened to make him react that way?” Duke asked, trying to be the logical one. Malik sniffed and his face in his knees.
“You wouldn’t like me anymore if I told you.” Ryou stroked the top of Malik’s head.
“That’s not true, Malik. We’re your friends, and we’re here to help you.” Duke nodded.
“Ryou’s right. You’ll feel better if you talk about it. Please tell us what happened?” Malik shook his head.
“Please Malik?” Ryou begged. “You’ll make me cry if you don’t tell us what’s wrong. Please?” Malik lifted his head up to look at the two boys before nodding.
“My plan backfired brutally. I became jealous when I learned of Marik’s many concubines and children, so I hatched a plan. I wanted to make him realize that I was the only one for him and I figured that by making him jealous, it would make him want only me. So the first person who came to my mind was Keith since the two hate each other, and as disgusting as it was, I laid with him.” Duke stuck his tongue out in disgust and Ryou elbowed him. “I know, I shouldn’t have done it. But my plans have always worked before. Then Marik became infuriated and he began to beat me. And now, after I pulled a stunt like that,” He buried his face back in his knees. “I don’t think Marik wants me anymore.” Ryou sighed.
“Oh Malik, I’m so sorry.” Ryou hugged his friend.
“Did you explain to Marik why you did it?” Duke asked.
“No, he just guessed it. And now....I think I’ve lost him forever.” Malik shoulders began to shake with light sobs. Ryou looked at Duke questionably, not sure he should do. Duke placed a hand on Malik’s shoulder.
“You should get those bruises checked, Malik. Come on, we’ll take you to the doctor.”
“But I hurt my back, and I don’t think I could walk...” Ryou looked a Duke.
“How far is the doctor?”
“His room is near the kitchen, so it’s not that far. I’ll carry you if you want?” Malik nodded. “Ryou, help get him onto my back.” Ryou helped Malik lay his weight on Duke’s back. Duke grunted as he stood up, falling forward a bit trying to balance Malik on his back. “Just leave the clothes, Ryou. We’ll come back for them.”
“Okay, now lets hurry! Poor Malik needs care!”
“Right. Just stay behind me incase he falls off, okay?”
“No problem.”
Malik laid in one of the doctor beds, sound asleep. His face was bandaged up to keep the healing salves from drying out. A small piece of red meat was strapped over his black eye and his hair was tied up high away from his face. Ryou sat by his bedside and held the limp hand in his.
“Poor Malik, I know what you’re feeling.” Ryou said, stroking his thumb over Malik’s hand. Duke came back from talking with the doctor.
“The doctor said the bruises will heal shortly and not to worry.” Ryou sighed.
“Well, that’s good news.”
“Yeah. Look, I’m going to go carry the rest of the clothes to the laundry room. You stay here with Malik for a bit, okay?” Ryou nodded.
“I will. See you at dinner, Duke.”
“See ya.”
Duke closed the door behind him gently as not to wake up Malik. Malik must have been blinded by jealously to sleep with Keith. Duke shivered in disgust and shook the dreadful image from his head. As if on cue, Duke caught sight of Keith and Pegasus, along with some of their men, sneaking down the hallway adjacent to his.
Curious, he snuck down the hallway and peeked around the wall, watching as the small group exited the building from the garden door. Duke darted to the door, opening it slightly. He saw the group disappear into a large shed, looking around before they did. Duke sensed that something was up and he darted from shrub to shrub, hoping to not get caught.
He spotted a ladder on the far side of the shed wall and he made a dash for it. The ladder was very shaky and rotted, but Duke paid it no mind as he silently climbed onto the roof. To his luck, there were a few holes in the roof, and he could hear the group talking. He placed his ear closer to the nearest hole, listening in on their conversation.
“It sure took you long enough, Keith.” Duke recognized the voice as Yami’s uncle Pegasus. “Do they suspect anything?”
“ jus just that guy Duke. He thinks something is going on, but Yami and the others won’t believe him because he’s not family.”
“Hmph. Well, I think we should keep an extra eye on him.” Pegasus said.
“If anything, I think it would be best to get rid of him, uncle. He’s a worthless brat anyway.” Duke growled lightly from his spot on the roof.
“Well, just watch out for that one. Now, about the attack-“ ‘Attack?’ Duke thought.
“Yes, I have the plans all ready. First, we wait a bit until they are comfortably settled back in the house. On one of the days of Odin, everyone will be getting drunk off their asses in worship, and I think that would be the best time to attack. Marik and Bakura will be completely useless when they’re wasted. So we wouldn’t have to worry about them. Then, we can easily attack the castle from the inside. We’ll be celebrating with them, and we’ll have the army outside waiting for our signal. Once we have them on the run inside, we’ll call in the rest of the army and the stronghold with be ours!” Pegasus clapped.
“Very good, Keith. You’re making my job a whole lot easier. If everything works out, you can have Seto’s job as adviser. What do you say?” Keith grinned.
“I like it! We have a plan!”
Duke gasped and with cat like moves, he jumped down from the roof and landed on his feet. He took off in a run. He had to find Yami and tell him Keith and Pegasus were planning an attack. He saw the stables in his path and turned into the open doors. He saw Tristan cleaning out the bottom hooves of a horse.
“Tristan!” Tristan looked up as he saw Duke run past him.
“Duke? What’s wrong?”
“Where’s Yam Tri Tristan put the horse’s leg down and wiped his hands on his pants.
“I saw him and Yugi headed for woods. The way they were heading is the way to the lake. I’m assuming they went there.”
“I need a horse! And fast!”
“Duke, slow down! What’s the hurry!”
“They’re hatching a plan!” Tristan raised an eyebrow.
“Who is?” Duke ignored him as he caught sight of Avaldamon out of his stable, grazing on some hay. He ran to Marik’s stallion and untied the rope from around it’s neck. “What are you doing?!”
“I need to find Yami and tell him!” Duke jumped up onto Avaldamon back and Tristan shouted out.
“NO! No one is allowed to ride Avaldamon but-“
”Heeya!” Duke nudged his heel into the horse’s side, but Avaldamon neighed and started bucking his back legs. Duke didn’t expect the horse to react this way and he couldn’t hold onto the reigns as he was thrown forward by Marik’s horse. He landed roughly on his head and blacked out.
“DUKE!” Tristan ran over to him and knelt by his side. Jou must have heard him from the kennels as he suddenly came running into the stables.
“Tris, what’s wrong?!”
“It’s Duke! He tried to ride Avaldamon and got thrown off!” Jou knelt next to Duke and checked his pulse.
“Well, he’s not dead, thank god. Just knocked out. Doesn’t he know that no one but Marik can ride Avaldamon?” Tristan shook his head.
“He must not know or he wouldn’t have tried to take the horse. He was saying something about someone hatching a plan, and that he needed to find Yami.”
“Lets get him to the castle and we’ll see wmoremore we can find out when he wakes up. He’s just unconscious right now. Will you carry him?”
“Yeah sure.” Tristan scooped Duke up in his arms and turned to Jou. “Make sure you shut the stable doors tight behind us. That’s all we need is for the horses to get out!”
“Don’t worry about those damn animals, just get Duke some help!”
