Chapter 13: There’s No Reason for Living

“Yami…I can’t feel the baby.”

Yami, in total and utter shock, watched as his one true lover, on his knees, close his eyes.

‘…please no…’ Yami begged whatever god would listen.

Yugi’s body started to fall further. Yami rushed to the falling body, catching it before it touched the ground. In Yami’s eyes, everything was in slow motion.

Yugi’s weight made it to Yami’s arms. Dalila, Seto, and Joey rushed over to see what was wrong.

Yami was still in a shock at the simple sentence uttered from the freely bleeding corpse in his arms just moments ago.

‘…feel…I can’t feel…can’t…I…baby…I can’t… I can’t feel the baby…’

It repeated in his head over and over.

“Yami! YAMI!!”

The pharaoh looked up to see Seto shouting at him.

“We have to get him to Isis! She’s already in the healing ward!”

His voice seemed a blur. Yami watched Seto’s lips move.

“We…we have to help him!” Yami shouted.

“Yes! He needs to get to Isis! Now let’s go!!”

Yami nodded and picked the angel up in his arms, blood dripping from it as it lie limp, and he ran. He ran with no sense of the pain in his muscles. He ran with no thoughts in his head. He ran with an immense pain in his chest…his heart.

Many healers were outside the quarters as they arrived, waiting for the ‘patient’. Yami rushed past them and laid Yugi on the slab himself.

“Get the bandages!” someone shouted.
“Water! I need some water!”

Yami placed his hands on Yugi’s stomach.
‘Come on…COME ON! MOVE!!’ he demanded.
‘…please…please move…please…’

No pressure made it to his palms.

“Pharaoh. Pharaoh, sire. I’m terribly sorry, but you are going to have to leave.”

Yami whipped around.
“What?”

“You have to leave, sir. It’s priority.”

“No! I won’t leave! That’s my lover, there, on that table, unconscious with my unborn child, RA DAMN IT!”

“Yami…”

He felt a hand on his wrist and looked into his cousin’s eyes.

“We should give them their room.”

Yami narrowed his eyes.
“I’m not leaving.”

“Yami!”

“I’M NOT LEAVING!”

Seto and Joey, tears in their eyes, grabbed each shoulder and started to wrestle him out.

“NO! LET ME GO, YOU BASTARDS! LET GO OF ME! YUGI!! YUGI, PLEASE!!”

He was pulled out of the room and all the noise from the room was silenced as the door closed.

Yami continued to pull at his restraints.
“YUGI! NO, PLEASE! HELP HIM! LET ME IN!”

“Yami! Calm down! Please!” Joey yelled.

“YUGI!...Yugi!…Yugi……”

His struggling finally ceased and he dropped to his knees, his arms remained captive behind himself.

His shoulders shook.
“Yugi…please be alright…I…I can’t loose you…or the baby…” he whispered to an unanswerable void.

Seto and Joey slowly released Yami’s arms and they fell at his sides then the floor so he was on his hands and knees.

“I can’t do it…I don’t understand…why? Why are the gods testing us? Why do they bless us then curse us all for some damned prophecy? Why must it be him that is tortured? Why not me? Oh gods, if I could take this burden from him, I would do so and give my life for him…so why do they put him through this? Why?!”
Yami’s tears fell to the dusty floor as his sobs grew louder.
“WHY?! He doesn’t deserve this! I don’t deserve him! It’s my fault! It’s all my fault!”

“No. None of this is your fault,” Joey slowly stated.

“There was nothing you, or any of us, could have done,” Seto added.

“That’s not true. I shouldn’t have picked him. I shouldn’t have made love to him. I shouldn’t have gotten mad at him…I shouldn’t have loved him.”
Yami pounded the ground with his fist…then his head.
He lifted his head tears of all shapes and sizes flowing ever freely.

“RA! PLEASE! HAVE MERCY! LET HIM AND THE CHILD LIVE! I BEG OF YOU! TAKE MY LIFE IF THAT IS WHAT IS NEEDED!”
He fell back to his hands.
“If he dies…I will have nothing to live for. I will follow him where ever he may go…even in death.”

~~*IN YUGI’S MIND*~~

Yugi was floating in a blue river. Surrounded by the sound of the rushing water. The sun beating on his face.

He moaned and opened his violet eyes. The blue sky with nothing but the sun crowding its purity.

‘Where am I?’

“The land of the Gods,” a booming voice sounded.

‘Land of the Gods? Am I…dead?’

“Not as such,” a feminine voice sounded.
“I am the Goddess Isis. We have called you here to speak with you.”

‘Why can’t I see you? Why can’t I talk?’

“We can not be seen by mortal eyes, and mortal words are never heeded by the gods…but their thoughts and their prayers are always heard,” another voice said. “I am Osiris.”

“I am Anubis,” a third voice called.

“Horus.”

“And I am the Great God of Ra,” the first voice reported.

‘Ra?’

“Yes. We have been watching you down in the Land of the Mortals. Your past is brutal and your present is weary. As for your future, it is still undecided.”

“We have been brooding about what we shall do with your fate,” Horus added. “We have been weighing your pure deeds against your evil.”

“It seems that the only deed done that is ill-hearted is mating while unwed,” Anubis informed.

Yugi blushed.
‘Oh. Uhh…sorry about that.’

They all laughed.
“Do not be,” Isis comforted. “Your deeds otherwise are completely pure of heart and unselfish. Your heart is the most freed of hate and malice and blood lust than we have ever seen in many millennia.”

“We have also heard the plea of your lover, the Pharaoh,” Osiris said.

‘Yami?’

The sky became a vision of Yami on all fours shaking.

“I shouldn’t have picked him. I shouldn’t have made love to him. I shouldn’t have gotten mad at him…I shouldn’t have loved him.”

Yugi’s heart ached.

“RA! PLEASE! HAVE MERCY! LET HIM AND THE CHILD LIVE! I BEG OF YOU! TAKE MY LIFE IF THAT IS WHAT IS NEEDED!”

‘No…’

“If he dies…I will have nothing to live for. I will follow him where ever he may go…even in death.”

The vision changed to him sitting in fetal position on the floor, his head buried in his arms.

“He cares very much for you. He even claims to love you,” Ra stated.

‘He does love me…just as much as I love him.’

“And the child?” Isis asked.

‘Our child…I love as well. With as much love as I can possibly offer and more.’

The gods fell silent.

“You, indeed, have a heart worth loving,” Horus spoke.

“We have come to a conclusion to your child’s, the Pharaoh’s and your fates,” Anubis said rather mightily.

“You have proven yourself worthy to live in happiness with your love in the Land of the Mortals,” Isis said, a smile heard in her voice.

‘And the baby?’

“Patience. Your life is still not promised. You have proven yourself, that is true,” Osiris informed, “but your life and the life of your child depends on your will to live on. You do not have much strength left and we are forbidden to help you but once more.”

‘Will you help me now?’

“I am afraid not,” Ra sadly stated. “This will not be the first time you mingle with the gods. We will meet again, young one, and your gift of help will be given. It is time for you to go. You may stay here no longer.”

The world turned bright white as the sound of water over came him.

~~*BACK IN REAL WORLD*~~

The head healer, Isis, came from the room.

Seto spotted her and stood along with Joey.

Yami felt the lift and lifted his head. At the sight of the woman, he also stood.
“How is he?”

Isis’ face fell as Yami paniced.

“No! What happened?!! Tell me now!!”

“He is still alive…barely. The child still has yet to have moved. I don’t know what its fate shall be. I don’t even know if he will wake. I am deeply sorry.”

Yami’s tears returned.
“Can I see him?” his voice cracked.

“Of course.”

Yami walked into the room, not knowing what he would see. Seto and Joey stayed behind, knowing that he wanted to be alone.

Yami walked through the door and saw it.

Yugi was lying on the table, his swollen belly clearly visible. Bandages were seen on his face, neck, legs, and arms where he had been injured.

Yami contained his stature and walked over. He stared down at the motionless body he so loved.

“Yugi?”

No answer.

Yami reached down and took the little hand in his own. It was so cold it sent shivers down his spine and more tears in his eyes.

“Yugi…I don’t know if you can hear me but…there are some things I need to tell you.” He took a deep breath.
“When I was younger, I always dreamed of growing up, being pharaoh, having servants wait on me hand and foot. As I grew, I realized that I wanted more. I wanted happiness, joy…and love. Forever, it seemed, I searched. Days turned to months…months turned to years…years of being alone and unhappy. I grew selfish and crude. Then I came of age that if I were not wed, I was to find someone within that year or I would step down form the throne. I met other royal families: widowed queens, young maidens, virgin princesses…but none I saw true love in. With all my hopes crashed, I gave up. I was within the final month and I was ready to step down thinking, ‘What’s the point of power if you can’t be happy?’ The priests, including Seto, decided that I should venture off into the village. I wasn’t sure of the idea but I thought I didn’t have anything to lose. I no longer had my pride, my dignity, my heart. A whole day I searched and was to returned empty handed and empty hearted. Just as I was turning back…I saw you. My heart raced, my thoughts jumbled. I knew I had found the right one to cure my insanity. You see? It is for you that I live…no further reason. I love you so deeply…I can’t even imagine a life without your love and purity…I love you with all my heart and soul and being. You are everything that I lack…and I need you.”
He leaned down and kissed the small hand. He then moved and touched the stomach.
“And then you became impregnated and the joy I felt could have burst through me. I was overwhelmed.”
His tears again fell.
“Please don’t go…I need you. Both of you. There is no reason for living without you.”

He closed his eyes to take in the morbid moment and to mourn his beloved.

His hand moved…

Yami shot his eyes open and looked at his hand placed on Yugi’s belly. His imagination? He didn’t feel anything else…it must have been high hopes.

His hand again jumped. His mouth gaped and his breath became uneven.

The baby had moved! It was still alive!

A hand was placed over Yami’s.
“I’m not going anywhere.”

Yami’s breath hitched in his throat at the whisper. He looked over to see Yugi’s half lidded eyes, so tired and weak but alive and full of tears.

“YUGI!!!!” Yami screamed in happiness and pure joy.
“Oh, by gods! I can’t believe it!” Yami grasped Yugi’s hand held it gently but lovingly.

“I’ll never leave you alone,” Yugi said. “I’ll always be with you…and you’ll always have a reason to live just as I will.”

Yami laughed and cried at the same time.
“Oh, Yugi!!!”

“Pharaoh?” Isis peeked her head in.
“Oh my! Yugi’s awake!”
