Chapter 13

I had no concept of time passing. I drifted in and out of consciousness. Bits and pieces of reality would intrude at odd intervals: I saw two bags of fluid hanging off a pole (one clear and the other red), I felt the nurse check and change the bandage on my hip, and I saw Seto, asleep with his head on top of his arms. The last scene touched me so much that I cried in my sleep. Yami and I talked frequently, in my mind, about my dream and what I could do to control it.

Several days passed before I finally regained my senses. When I opened my eyes, Seto’s face was the first one I saw. He looked terrible: unshaven, rumpled clothes, and red eyes. He gave me a tired smile, “It’s about time…do you have any idea how uncomfortable these chairs are?”

“You know, you could have gone home any time you wanted,” I teased.

“Not a chance. Do you have any idea how close I came to losing you? I almost died when the doctor said he had no idea if you’d ever wake up,” he replied with a serious tone.

“What happened? I remember fighting Marik; but, the details get fuzzy after I passed out.”

“Well, you went into shock because of the blood loss. Several of the cuts that bastard gave you were very close to major blood vessels; the doctors thought Marik had nicked a few and caused some hidden, internal bleeding. You had a small concussion and several broken ribs. Apparently, he beat you after he hit you across the back of the head.”

“Huh…I guess he took advantage of the situation and gave me some payback for what I did to him. He was always a sore loser.” I laughed. I winced and placed a hand on my bound ribs. I saw the healing cuts on the backs of my hand. I knew I would bear those scars forever. I felt tears forming in my eyes.

Seeing the tears, Seto reached across the bed and gently wiped them away. “Don’t cry…I will always love you; no matter what happens.”

I sniffled and took at swipe at the tears myself. “I know that…I just hate myself for not believing in you. If I had told you about the dream, I wouldn’t have gotten mad. If I didn’t mad, I wouldn’t have gotten myself into such as mess.”

“Stop torturing yourself. You’ve been through a lot. I don’t think anybody could have survived what you’ve have.”

I sighed, “I know; Yami kept telling me the same thing.”

His eyes widened. “How have you been talking to Yami? As far as I knew, Yugi was the only one shared a mind link with Yami.”

“It’s weird. I’m not exactly sure how, or why, Yami can speak to me in my mind. But, he has helped me a lot during my time of healing. He told me some things about myself I never knew existed.”

“Remind me to thank him…after I clobber him for spending so much time with you,” he growled jokingly. He sat back and reached in to his shirt pocket. “I believe you lost this after a few nights ago. Let me help you put it back where it belongs,” and he held up the initial necklace. I carefully sat up and let him put it around my neck.

“Thank you,” I said softly. I wondered what I did to deserve him. I glanced around the room. The bedside table overflowed with flowers, cards and gifts from people who wished me well. One arrangement caught my eyes: blood red roses with three Blue Eyes White Dragon cards. “Aren’t those Blue Eyes cards rare? At least, that’s what Mokie told me the first night I got them,” I asked.

Seto shook his head. “When will you learn that nothing is too good for you? Especially this…” he told me as he pulled a small box off the table. The flowers had hid it from sight. He carefully opened the box and showed me the ring that glittered inside. “Be mine for now and always…marry me.”

“You never ask, do you?” I teased to cover my shock.

“Didn’t I say you would be spanked if you didn’t stop being a smartass?”

“Oh no you don’t…not now. I’ve been mortally wounded and you want to spank me? Really, I’m shocked at you…” I giggled.

He took the ring out of the box and slid it on to my finger. I looked at it as it sparkled on my finger. “Do you realize that it will take forever for me to stop being a smartass?” I asked innocently.

“As long as it takes…” he vowed and leaned towards me for a kiss. We were interrupted before the kiss could develop into something interesting.

The nurse walked in, “I wondered what you were up to. The monitors recorded an increase in you pulse and heart ra If If you can’t settle down, Mr. Kaiba will have to leave. You have some visitors, but they can’t stay for too long. You do need your rest.” She walked over to my IV and injected a mild sedative into the line.

Flo and Mokie, Bakura, Mai, Yugi and Yami walked in as the nurse left the room. Mokie introduced me to Yugi, whom I’ve never met face to face. I nodded and smiled at Yami-we spent a lot of time together, talking in my mind. Flo wouldn’t stop crying because she wasn’t there to help me. Bakura apologized for Marik had done and said he would take care of things personally. I shuddered…I’ve seen Bakura furious once and I never wanted to see it again. Mai shrieked when she saw the size of the diamond on my ring and proceeded to make plans for my bachlorette party. She and Flo walked out as they discussed the details; Mokie followed close behind. I felt myself drift off to sleep. Before I did, I sent Seto home. Yami said his farewell in my mind as he and Yugi led my protesting fiancé out the door.
