Chapter 13 - Haunted Shores - Bakura POV
/This is bullshit. Why does he have to go through this?/
I studied Ryou who stood beside me. We were at Yugi's
house, getting ready to go to Tristans funeral.
Ryou was wearing a black suit with a black shirt. He looked
positively undead. All this business was affecting him terribly,
and there was nothing I could do about it. I prayed continuously
to every god in creation that Joey would prove to be innocent. Though
I was as certain of such a thing as Yugi seeme be. be.
Ryou was crying again. I zipped up my black leather pants and
pulled him to me.
"Shhh Kitten...." I said soothingly.
Ryou nuzzled into my neck, purring. My touch always seemed to
calm him somewhat.
I let him go and pulled on a fitted black shirt. Over the top I put
on a black trenchcoat. I sat down to put my boots on.
Once we were ready to go ggedgged Ryou again.
"We'd better go check on Yugi." I stated.
Ryou nodded and led the way downstairs. Yugi was on the phone.
he said goodbye and hung up, a smile lighting up his face.
"They're letting him go!" he cried.
"Who? Joey? You mean...." Ryou said.
"He's innocent. he had a concrete alibi. But you'll never guess who
came forward about it." Yugi said excitedly.
"Who?" I asked, Yugi's enthusiasm was infectious.
"Kaiba. And a guy named Malik. They both said Joey was with them,
and the time coincided with Tristan's time of death." Yugi stated,
his eyes shining.
/Malik huh? That guy sure gets around./
"Thats great!" Ryou cried, hugging Yugi.
"So when does he get out?" I asked.
"They didn't say. It'd be a shame if he missed Tristan's funeral." Yugi
replied, suddenly sad.
I nodded in agreement.
"Well... we should get going..." Ryou said quietly.
Yugi nodded, absently pulling on a black suit jacket over his sleeveless
black top and tight black pants. He led the way outside to my car.
At the cemetary, Tristans body lay in an ivory coffin, ready to be lowered
into the ground. I stood to the right, holding Ryou tightly who sobbed
into my shoulder. Yugi stood beside me, lost in his own thoughts, arms
wrapped protectively around himself.
Tristans mom and dad stood beside Yugi. Tristans mom was a complete
wreck, crying loudly.
Across from me stood Tea, Duke, and some other school friends of
Tristans.
A black limousine pulled up. Seto Kaiba climbed out, unfolding his limbs
like a giant spider. Behind him Yami climbed out. Malik followed them
out of the limousine. I forgot to breathe as his eyes met mine. He smiled
sadly. Despite the somber occasion, he was gut wrenchingly good looking.
Last out of the limousine was Joey, looking as good as i've ever seen him,
dressed in a tailored black suit such as Kaiba wore. he made his way over
to us, hugging Ryou and I, and then turning to Yugi.
Yugi lost all composure righ then and threw himself at Joey. Joey hugged
Yugi tightly, crying with him.
Malik, Yami and Kaiba stood together opposite them.
Once the funeral was over, Joey wanted to stay behind to pay his respects.
We all moved a short distance away to give joey some privacy. Tristan's
mom and dad went home. Most people followed suit. Ryou stayed,
talking to Yugi. I went to talk to malik. "We "We meet again." He said softly.
I nodded.
"You disappeared after damn near killing me." I stated.
"Sorry about that." Malik replied, looking at the ground.
"No big deal. In light of what happened." I said sadly.
Malik looked up at me, biting his lip.
/He's so damn gorgeous.../
"Thank you... for helping Joey." I continued.
"It was the truth. Joey was innocent. I couldn't live with his conviction
on my conscience." he replied.
"I really cannot thank you enough." I gushed.
Malik blushed.
/Life is too short to fuck around. If I've learnt anything from Tristan's
death it's got to be that I have to live every day like it's my last. No
regrets./
"Malik, we really met under terrible circumstances. You want to give me
another chance and go out with me tomorrow night?" I asked.
Malik's eyes widened. He smiled.
"Yeah, I do." he stated.
"I'm so glad you said yes. Meet me at 'Gen Q' (the nightclub) at
seven?" I continued, relief flooding through me.
Malik nodded.
"Sure. I'll see you then." He answered.
"I've got to go back to Ryou, but i'll see you tomorrow night." I stated.
Malik nodded and smiled.
I turned and walked back to Yugi and Ryou. I spied Duke talking to Yami
some feet away.
"Ryou, go talk to Duke." I stated.
He looked at me incredulously.
"Uh.. why does he need to...?" Yugi asked.
"Because Malik and I are going to Gen Q tomorrow night and Ryou and
Duke are coming with us." I said simply.
"Are you crazy? I can't ask him out!" Ryou hissed.
"You can and you will or i'll do it for you." I said.
I knew I was being a bitch, but how else was Ryou going to get what he really
wanted?
"This is hardly the time or place..." Yugi began.
"Don't you start! You and Yami are coming with us." I interrupted.
Yugi's jaw dropped. I turned back to Ryou.
"Go on kitten...." I urged him.
He took a deep breath and walked over to Duke and Yami. I couldn't hear
what was said, but Duke nodded and walked away with Ryou.
"Nows you're chance." I said, giving Yugi a slight push.
But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Yami spotted us and walked over.
"Bakura" he said, nodding "And little Yugi."
Yugi blushed.
"You haven't forgotten me have you?" Yami asked.
Yugi shook his head and looked at me.
/Yes Yugi. I remember fucking your brains out./
"Yami, Malik and I are going to Gen Q tomorrow ni" I" I said, hoping Yugi
would catch on.
"Oh?" was all Yami said.
"yeah. I was going to go, but couldn't find a date. Think you could help me
out?" Yugi added, his confidence returning.
Yami smiled.
"Sounds great." he said warmly.
"We're meeting at seven." I said.
"Seven it is. See you then Yugi, Bakura." Yami said, then kissed Yugi on
the forehead and walked away.
Yugi turned to me, tears filling his eyes.
"Whats wrong? Aren't you happy?" I asked.
"Sure. It's just that I feel so guilty. Tristan is dead and here I am asking
Yami out." Yugi sobbed.
"Yugi, I learned something today. Life is too short to waste. Make the most
of every opportunity and never regret anything." I replied.
Yugi smiled at me.
"Thanks Bakura. None of us will ever forget him, thats the way he'd want it.
he wouldn't want us to be dragged down by his death." he said.
I nodded eagerly.
"He was a good man." I stated.
Joey came to stand with us.
"ready to go home bud?" he asked Yugi.
Yugi nodded.
"Need a ride?" I asked.
"yeah if you don't mind." Joey replied.
I smiled.
"It's fine. Ryou will find his own way home." I said.
_Ryou?_
=....yes?=
_You right to get home?_
=Gods! uh.... yes...=
_Are you ok?_
=Fine. Just. Go.=
I shook my head. What the hell was that boy doing?
I led Yugi and Joey to my car. Once on the road, my mind wandered.
"hey Joey. Want to come to Gen Q with us tomorrow night?" I asked.
"Whos' us?" Joey replied.
"Malik and I, Yami and Yugi and Ryou and Duke." I said.
"So i'd... need a.... date?" Joey asked.
"Thats right. But theres got to be somebody you want to ask." I stated.
"yes, but i'm not going to. It'll never happen." Joey said hurriedly.
"Who is it?" I asked.
Joey blushed.
"Come on. Who?" I continued.
Joey said nothing.
"I can just read your mind Joey Wheeler. You might as well tell me." I reasoned.
"It's Kaiba." Joey hissed.
I swerved to avoid hitting a bus.
"You're not serious.... Oh!, You are......" I said stupidly.
Joey glared at me.
"Honestly Bakura, you can be so insensitive.!" Yugi piped up.
I stopped out the front of their house.
"Well, take care you guys." I said, changing the subject.
"Will do. See you tomorrow night." Yugi replied.
"Bye." Joey stated.
I laughed to myself as I drove home. It would be an interesting
night at Gen Q. Thats for sure.
