Chapter 12

Grandpa was finished cooking dinner for all six of them by the time the four teens and one vampire came out of their stunned state. As usual, Jounouchi, Honda, and Ootachi at like they were starving. Yugi tried to eat at a normal pace, but he wanted to duel Jou, so he pretty much failed at that. Yami and Grandpa were the only ones who didn't act like they'd eat the tableware too.
Honda and Ootachi decided to play a game of Monopoly with Grandpa while Jou and Yugi dueled and Yami watched. He was beginning to see how Yugi controlled his powers, still unknown to all but the former Pharaoh. It was his innocence. That worried Yami since he had lost his child-like innocence at a young age when the infamous Thief King Bakura murdered his parents and he had been forced to take the throne. Yami frowned as he remembered those painfully dark times when all had seemed lost. He didn't noticed Yugi and Jou had finished their duel and were both looking at him in concern.
"Yami? Is everything okay?' Yugi asked gently, relocating himself so he was sitting right in front of his soulmate. Yami blinked and gave a weak smile.
"It's nothing. Just bad memories." Yugi frowned.
"You seem to remember them a lot. Either that or you have a lot of them.: Yami flinched at the latter. Yugi's frown deepened. "Do you want to talk? I'm here."
"No," Yami sighed. "It's my burden, not yours." Yugi grabbed his hand and led him upstairs. "Wait, what?"
"You need someone to talk to. I can't stand seeing you in pain like this anymore. You're going to talk and I'll share this 'burden' you have," Yugi said with uncharacteristic determination. Yami was floored.
"Wh- what's gotten into you?" Yugi stopped and faced him. Yami gasped when he saw the boy's tears.
"I know you're hiding your pain because you want to protect me. I know I'm weak, but if I don't help myself get stronger, I'll always be weak. This is my chance to become stronger. I have a reason to be strong. You need someone to lean on just like anyone else. And I need to be that person. Now come on." Yugi pulled Yami up the last few stairs and they disappeared into his room.
"Well, it's about time he harnessed that inner strength I got a glimpse of three days ago," Jou said proudly. "Ta think he'd become strong for someone who seems unbreakable on the outside." Jou shook his head, smiling.
"Maybe we should head on home, guys. This might take awhile," Ootachi suggested. Honda nodded.
"Yeah, we can come back tomorrow. It's Saturday, we can hang out all day," he agreed.
"Thanks for the meal, Gramps. We'll be seein' ya!" Jou called as the trio left. Grandpa nodded and looked up to Yugi's closed door.
'Things are really going to change around here now that Yugi's found some of his true strength,' he thought, grabbing the broom to sweep outside the storefront.
