Lips of an Angel

Yay! A request!

This one is for Teania. Hope you like. Sorry it took so long.

Oh and a question I haven't been able to answer on my own. Who's taller Ryou or Malik? Ever notice how when you see the two together either one's bent over *pauses then giggles because I'm immature that way* or it's not really Ryou and/or Malik or one's standing in front of the other. If anyone knows of a good pic of the two of them where you can tell I'd be in your debt for a story of your choice. I prefer it not to be fan art because we all know that's open to whatever hentai thoughts the artist can think of. But if you do know any good fan art I'll never turn down that either hehe.

I don't own the song Lips Of An Angel as sung by Hinder

Lyrics in **

Pairings: Seto/Jou, Seto/Yami

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Honey why are you calling me so late?
It's kinda hard to talk right now
Honey why are you crying, is everything okay?
I gotta whisper 'cause I can't be too loud*
It was a cell phone. Nothing that could hurt him. Nothing that could cause him any harm on it's own. The person on the line however had always been a master at tearing him apart.
Seto placed his hand over the screen to dim the bright light coming from it and glanced down at his lover. It was a good thing that Katsuya slept like the dead once he was out for the night. Otherwise this might be hard to explain.
The phone was muted but sat on the stand beside his bed for one reason. The damn vibration would wake him up if anyone important called.
Someone like the one calling now. The screen suddenly went dark before popping up, much less bright this time, with the missed call message.
He waited for what seemed like an eternity but the voicemail never clicked over.
Something in the pit of his stomach urged him to just toss the phone in the nightstand drawer and leave it there but he couldn't bring himself to. If he was calling then it must be important. Hesitation gone he quietly stood and left his bedroom to go to the study.
This time when the phone buzzed he answered. "This had better be important Yami. You promised not to call anymore."
Harsh sobs were his answer. Something wasn't right. Yami didn't cry. Yugi cried but not the Pharaoh. His tears had turned to dust long ago.
Still he'd recognize that baritone anywhere. Even through gasping tears.
"What's wrong? Yami? Are you okay? Where are you? I'll come and..."
"No. I just...I'm sorry. I heard that you and Jou are going to try to...I'm okay. It's late I should-"
"It's fine." Damn it he hadn't meant to whisper that last part. It was 1 am. No one in his home was awake. Besides he was on a completely different floor than the bedrooms were on. "I can't be too loud."
He heard a slight shuffle on the other end of the line and tried to figure out what exactly it was the other was doing.
"You and Jou...The papers said you're going to try to get married."
*Well, my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on*
It was his turn to let the line buzz with silence. "Yeah."
"You didn't give him that ring did you? I meant, oh hell, that's exactly what I meant. I don't want to see him wearing it."
"Of course not." His hand automatically went to his right hand where a simple band was. Garnet and sapphire winked in the moonlight. "I told you I'd hold on to it until you wanted it back and I meant it."
"I know. I just, when I heard, I guess I just assumed you would use a ring you already had. Thank you."
"Yami," He twisted the band slowly wondering if he really wanted to ask his next question. "Do you want it back?"
"Yes...no...I want the ring but I can't...we can't...We're not good for each other." More soft rustling and the sound of something rattling nearby.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing. Nothing to worry about at least."
The brunette wandered over to the picture window overlooking his back garden. Bright blue eyes stared back at him in reflection. "I'll give you the ring back if you want it. It's yours. I got it for you. I wanted you to have it. I only kept it because you asked me to otherwise I would have sent it back to you with Mouto a long time ago."
"I know. I needed some time though. You aren't an easy person to get over you know."
"Damn it Yami." He pinched the bridge of his nose trying to fight off the impending headache. "You didn't have to get over me. I offered you everything I've offered Jou first and you told me no. What do you want from me love? I'm a fucking genius and I can't figure it out. What part wasn't good enough for you?"
*It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel*
"Seto."
He stopped mid rant with a sigh. "Gods I've missed hearing you say my name like that."
A low chuckle purred across the link. That was what he had been missing. Jou was wonderful. Fiery, passionate and loyal to a fault. A considerate lover and supportive partner. But he wasn't Yami.
"If I told you I wanted my ring back, would you give it to me? Even if you knew it didn't mean that we were going to be together again?"
Seto paused. He had promised Yami that he would only hold on to the ring until he wanted it back. It was his after all. Designed for him and him alone. But if he gave it up then with it went all hope he had of ever getting the other back. Back into his life, his home, his bed, it would all be gone.
"Has Jou asked about it?"
"Once."
"Hm." A door closed none too softly. "And what did you tell him."
"That it was yours. He never asked again. "Of course that could have been because he was told not to. Told it didn't matter.
"Will you give it back?"
"Come home." The words spilled from his lips before he could stop them.
"I am home. I'm with Yugi and..."
He laughed. A cold sound he hadn't made in a long time. "Yugi's not enough for you. He never was."
"And Jou is enough for you?"
*It's funny that you're calling me tonight
And yes I've dreamt of you too
And does he know you're talking to me?
Will it start a fight?
No I don't think she has a clue*
"I care about him." Seto did in his own way care very much for the blonde. But Yami was the first. The best.
Yami's breathing was calming. "And I about Yugi. So we're back to the original question. Would you give me my ring back?"
"Does he know you called me to ask for your engagement ring?" A low blow perhaps. After all he knew the depth of their bond. Those two gave soul mates a new meaning. He hated that bond. He always had.
"I had a dream about you last night. That you came to me and offered me the ring again. In my dream I said yes. Then this evening Yugi comes home and informs me that you and Jou are trying to find someone to marry you."
Seto turned away from the window. He leaned against the wall that separated the study from the hall. It hadn't been planned. Jou had hinted at the fact he wanted to move in instead of just coming over. A drawer to put his clothes in. A toothbrush in the bathroom. The last person who had his clothes mixed in with Seto's had been Yami. So Seto agreed.
"Why?" It was soft. Quieter than the whispers that they had been passing back and forth in the dark.
"He needs me." You don't. The words went unspoken.
"I want my ring. I want you to bring it to me. I want to see you one more time before...Yugi was so excited about his friend getting married...I asked him to get hand fasted to me. Next week. He's going to invite Jounouchi, Mokuba and you. He'll be crushed if you don't come."
The air rushed out of him in a surprised groan. Sinking to his knees, Seto clutched at the phone. "You're lying. Gods Yami tell me you're lying."
Something on the others side made a whirling click. it sounded familiar but his mind was running in circles too quickly to figure it out.
"He loves me. Like Jou loves you."
"I won't let you."
For the first time since crying Yami's voice held emotion. Anger. Hot anger. "You don't have a say in it."
"You're only saying that because it's your precious aibou." It was his only defense. When someone hurts you then lash out and hurt them as well. Unfortunately Yami felt the same way.
"You wouldn't understand you stuck up cum fuck."
He tried to stay mad but it didn't work. He started laughing. Loud and bordering on hysterical. "Cum fuck? That's a horrible insult. Even for someone who's native language isn't Japanese."
"I've missed you so much Seto." This time he was able to place the noises. An annoying beeping followed by the sound of a car starting up.
*Well my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on*
"Don't try to drive and talk to me at the same time. You could get hurt."
"It's 1 am" came the stubborn reply. "No one's out. I need to get out of the house for a while. Yugi was starting to roll around. I don't want him to wake up."
"Afraid he'll find out you're talking to your ex."
"No. He's not been sleeping well lately. He misses you."
He rolled his head back with a sigh. "It was one time Yami. He and I both agreed that he wasn't the right kind for me. You are."
"Was."
"Are."
"Why did you ask him out after we parted ways?"
"Parted ways? So proper."
He could hear a radio playing softly. He could almost place the song but not quite. It didn't matter really. "I've learned to cope with change. To become stronger because of the obstacles produced by it."
"Jou loves me. As much as Yugi loves you."
"Then I wish you both well."
"Liar. You want us to fail. Just like I want you and Yugi to."
Yami sighed again. A heartbreaking sound. "Sometimes I wish he was you. Sometimes but not always."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Seto was getting a headache. The conversation was moving topics too fast. Sometimes it sounded as if Yami wanted to come home. To be with him again. Sometimes it sounded as if he had accepted Yugi as a new possibility. Damn hikaris.
"Forget it." Yami apparently had turned the radio off. "It's raining Seto."
*It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel*
"Then you should get off of the phone with me. I don't like it when you drive and talk but I hate it when you try to do it in the rain."
"Bring my ring to the hand fasting."
Seto nodded. Sure Yami couldn't see it but that was okay. "Goodbye Atemu."
"Goodbye Seto."
The phone beeped as it clocked off. Seto calmly closed to phone and laid it on his desk. Pulling the chair around he dropped into it. It was all coming to an end. Yugi and Yami were going to be together. Nothing he would say or could do would change that. One more thing he'd have to accept.
It'd be a lot easier once Jou had found someone to marry them. He had persuade the blonde in his own way for years before finally noticing that Yami had been quietly doing the same to him. So he turned his attention. After Yami left and the whole Yugi thing failed on its first time out, Seto wandered back to his first crush.
"Seto?"
The brunette looked up to meet tired amber eyes. It looked like his late night call had some unforeseen consequences.
"What are you doing awake?"
Jou stifled a yawn. He brushed his bangs out of his face before he made his way to his lover. Wrapping his arms around his neck, he leaned into the warm with a mumble. "Rolled over and you weren't there. Figured you were either in here or at work. If I hadn't found you here I would have gone back to bed."
Long fingers caressed the back of his neck. Seto smiled softly as he tipped his head down to catch the other's lips. Katsuya was warm and sleepy. Responsive as always but sluggish as his mind tired to catch up.
Jou was closer to being like Yami than Yugi had ever been. Yugi was quick to laugh just like Jou though. It was time to stop comparing them.
Time to move on. Jou couldn't be Yami. But Seto didn't want him to be. He drew back slowly.
Leaving his cell phone on the desk he Seto took the others hand and lead him back to bed. Their bed. Soon it'd be their marriage bed. It was more than he could have ever hoped for. Someone loved him.
"I was thinking, if we can't find someone to marry us, maybe there is another type of ceremony we could have."
Despite the late hour Jou's eyes lit up.
"Yeah? I'll look into it." Seto had refused to help. He said he didn't have time. Something Jou accepted without a question. He and Mokuba were kept well feed with a warm home and anything they could ever want or need merely a request away. All because of the hours Seto spent at work. Yami had never been happy being second place. Jou was used to it. He had been second or worse his whole life. No reason to change now. Besides the CEO took better care of him than anyone else would have. He needed Seto and Seto needed him.
"I'll help. When I get a chance. Ask around to see if anyone knows anything." Seto climbed into bed. The other cuddled against him.
"If ya want." His eyes closed and he drifted off.
"I love you."
*It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel*
Please leave a message at the tone
"Kaiba, it's Yugi. I need to or Jou to call me. I'm at the hospital. There's been an accident. Yami's hurt. Please just call me."
You've reached Jou's phone but I can't answer. Leave me a message and...damn it Mokuba knock it off
"Damn it where are you two? I need you. Yami's hurt and no one's telling me anything. I'm at the hospital. Please get this soon. I need you."
Seto and Jou hit the hospital doors at a dead run. Sitting in the main waiting area was Yugi.
"Yug'! What happened?" Jou skidded to a stop and dropped to his knees.
"I dunno." He was shaking hard. "It was raining and the police said he hit a puddle. He hydroplaned. The car hit a tree. They called me. Told me to come down but no one will tell me how he is."
Seto stood from where he had been sitting rubbing the smaller mans back and strode to the emergency room desk. "I need information on Mouto Yami."
The girl behind the desk popped her gum without looking up. "You'll have to talk to the doctor."
"Look at me."
The girl popped her gum again before rolling her eyes. "Look sir I already...Kaiba-sama! I'll let the doctor know you're here."
Sometimes it was good to be feared. "I'll be in the main waiting area. Make it fast or I'll go looking for the man myself. We don't want that now do we?"
The girl shook her head. Score another one for the scary CEO voice.
Minutes seemed to tick by like hours before a man in suit and clean white coat walked up to them. "Kaiba-sama. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I hadn't realized you were here or I would have been down sooner."
"He," Seto motioned towards Yugi "has been here for three hours. No one would tell him anything."
Poorly disguised disgust passed over the doctors face. "Our mistake. As I was saying Mouto Yami is in room 2203. He suffered a few contusions, some scratches, none deep enough to require stitches and a nasty bump to the head. We're keeping him overnight just to be safe but he should be free to go home by this afternoon."
"Fine." Seto pulled the two younger boys to their feet and headed for an elevator. He jabbed at the button. When the doors finally parted he shoved Yugi inside. "We'll come up later. Call when they're ready to release him and we'll pick you up. Right now he needs you. Go be with him."
Yugi nodded. He still looked vaguely shocked but he would be okay. "Thank you."
"And take this." Seto placed the ring in Yugi's palm. "It's Yami's. He left it at my house."
"Don't forget to call us." Jou called as the doors slid shut.
"Let's go home Katsuya. Or better yet, let's go get breakfast. You can tell me who you've talked to about marrying us and I'll tell you who I can threaten into actually doing it."
*And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
Honey why are you calling me so late?*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hard. Very hard to write. Draining even. I just hope it's up to snuff.

Catti, new songs. I'll do my best *smiles* Just one question though? One the Yami, Yugi, Anzu thing I wanna make sure I have this right. You want Yami and Yugi together and Anzu on the outside wishing she was with Yami. Is that right? And just for you because you're you I'll make a happy ending Bakura/Ryou. It may seem odd but with the proper warnings *grins* I'm sure I can sneak it in.

First though I need to work on the next part of Tearing Down Souls and maybe try to get up another chapter of WTSGD. But keep the ideas coming.
