Chapter 12

The room was still dark when I came to…I was blindfolded. My arms were extended above my head and I felt the handcuffs as they bit into my wrists. My legs were shaking from the cramps; I was forced to stand as high as I could on my tiptoes. I was positioned as if I were about to perform the bondage act I had rehearsed a couple of nights ago. I listened carefully for some clue as to what would happen next. I sensed that my assailant and I were alone in the room. I was still at the club, up on the stage.

I gasped as I felt a slash go across my stomach. I then became aware of the blood that was flowing down my body from a number of cuts. Someone was standing in front of me, breathing hard. I quickly recognized who it was by the smell of his cologne: Marik.

I tried to jerk my body away from tladelade. “Why in the name of Ra are you doing this to me?” I asked. “What have I ever done to you that you didn’t deserve or ask for?”

“You think yourself to be better than me. Like, I’m not worthy to even be in your presence. Your attitude and distance caused me to probe your mind with my Millennium Rod and I saw something very interesting. You possess a lost soul and there is much power in a lost soul. It speaks of power; power strong enough to pull away from the spirit and still be able to survive.”

“What do you mean…power to survive?”

“Something happened to you, so terrible, that caused your soul to rip itself away from your spirit. But, a piece of your spirit remained to keep your soul alive. That is the power I seek. I had planned to seduce your body and make you my willing slave. Then, with the help of my Millennium Rod, I would send you to the Shadow Realm and remove that power from your soul. All that would be left behind would be a shell of your former self, willing to do as I command. But, you possess a strength that I never even imagined or ever encountered.”

“But that still doesn’t explain why you’re doing this? Does Bakura know?” I asked, trying to stall as I remembered what Yami had told me in the other realm. I believed him when he said he would send help.

“No…the fool that he is. He never realized the significance of the acts I wanted you to perform. They are ancient rituals that should have cast your soul out and left it vulnerable to me. But, I never counted on your soul’s strength. Tell me, how did you know when to change a step or gesture in your performances?” he asked as he continued to drag the blade across my skin, leaving rivulets of blood in its wake.

I winced; the pain was incredible and I started to feel dizzy from the loss of blood. “I don’t know what you mean. I adjusted the act as I saw fit because it felt like the thing to do.”

“Interesting…you are a formidable opponent. I must compliment you for that. The night you punched me…what were you thinking about?” he asked, slicing into my skin again.

“Nothing…just a recurring dream that I’ve been having. What’s it to you anyway?”

“Didn’t you ever wonder of the significance of that dream?”

“No…I just wanted it to stop and leave me in peace.”

“Did you ever happen to think that it was your soul’s way of telling you…” he started to say but was interrupted by shouting.

“Marik, get your filthy hands off her!” I heard someone shout. It sounded like Seto but how did he know I was here?

“Dark Star, are you okay?” I heard Bakura ask; he sounded so worried for me. Of the people in the room, he knew what Marik was capable of doing when he was cornered.

“STOP!” shouted Marik. He held the point of the blade above my heart. “Anyone comes any closer, and I will gut this bitch where she hangs.”

I heard pann Ban Bakura’s voice; I saw in my mind’s eye as his face paled. “You are performing a ritual of retribution!” I heard him whisper to Seto, “The ritual involves a series of symbols that must be carved into the chosen target’s skin. The final step is the killing thrust of the blade into the victim’s heart!”

“No, you can’t!” I heard Seto shout. “If you kill her, I will hunt you down to the ends of the earth and when I find you, you’ll pay!”

I heard a voice in the back of my mind…it was Yami. “You cannot allow him to complete the ritual. If Marik is successful in completing it, he will posses your soul.”

“What can I do? Tell me, Yami. You said you would help me,” I thought-pleaded to him.

“Remember what you did the other night?” Yami asked. How could he have known about that?

“I see it in your thoughts, young warrior. You need to try and disarm him the same way,” he replied and I felt his presence leave my mind. I thought quickly and slumped my body down as if I had fainted.

“Xenobia…NO!” Seto and Bakura shouted in unison, unable to move because of the blade positioned over my heart.

Marik laughed; it was so evil it froze me to my core. He shifted the blade and said, to himself, “At last, your soul and its power are mine!”

With a speed I never knew I possessed, I pulled myself up once again by the hook the handcuffs hung on and shoved him away from me. I felt as if I would rip myself apart. I pulled my legs up to where I thought Marik’s throat was and squeezed as hard as I could. I felt as Marik tried to pry my legs apart so he could catch his breath. He flailed his arms and ended up stabbing me in the outer thigh, close to my hip. I screamed at the top of my lungs and flexed as hard as I could. Without blood and oxygen going to his brain, Marik quickly lost consciousness. I heard the footsteps of Bakura and Seto running to the stage. Two sets of hands pulled me off of the hook and laid me on the stage.

“Find me a blanket…” Seto commanded. “We need to get her to the hospital, fast. She's lost so much blood.” I heard Bakura jump off the stage as he rushed to the back to get a blanket. Seto pulled the blindfold from my eyes and I squinted from the lights. Next, he started to remove the handcuffs from my wrists. Not bad for a rich guy…he managed to pick the locks before his eyes fell upon the button bracelet on my wrist. He pulled my wrist to his lips.

“Please…don’t leave me. I just found you and I can’t lose you,” he whispered. I thought I saw tears running down his face. I tried to smile as I retreated into the darkness.

“You have done well, warrior.” Yami’s voice floated softly in the dark. I surrendered to the oblivion.
