Fear in the Darkness

ChibiMisu here! Sorry about the cliffhanger! ^_^; But, you’ll find out what happens in this chapter!

Thanks for all the great reviews! I’m going to try and make the story enjoyable for everybody. If you reviewed and asked for something in particular, I’ll try to meet it, okay? ^_^

Quick note: I’ve been asked what “ChibiMisu” means. Basically, it’s Tira’ Misu, the desert, *my favorite!* with “tira” taken out and “chibi” put in it’s place. -_- not creative, I know.

Anyway, read on my fellow Vikings! -_- eh...

Chapter 13: Fear in the Darkness

“SETO FELL INTO THE RIVER!!”

Everyone turned to the river, looking for Seto. Bakura shouted and pointed out the horse Seto was riding. The heavy sheet of snow made it almost impossible to see anything! Yami and some of the others started riding down the river, hoping to catch a glance at where Seto would be. Yami heard a faint “help!” over the wind, and saw Seto clinging to a rock in the water.

“I SEE HIM!” Yami shouted over the heavy winds. “THERE ON THE ROCK!”

“HOW ARE WE GOING TO SAVE HIM!?” Jou shouted back.

“LET ME GO!” Marik answered. “I SHOULD BE STRONG ENOUGH TO SWIM THROUGH THE CURRENTS!”

“WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOU!? I DON’T WANT TO LOSE BOTH OF YOU!” Yami shouted back.

“WE NEED TO ACT FAST, YAMI!!” Bakura shouted.

“MALIK, YOU STAY WITH YAMI!” Malik looked at Marik worriedly.

“BUT I-“

”DO IT!” Marik all but pushed him off the horse, making him land in the snow. “SORRY!” Yugi got out of his little fur cocoon and reached into the saddle bag, pulling out a length of rope.

“TIE THIS TO YOUR WAIST SO WE CAN HOLD YOU!! THEN WE CAN PULL YOU AND SETO TO SHORE!” Yugi shouted quickly, tossing the rope to Marik. Marik quickly tied it around his waist and was ready to hop off Avaldamon, when Yami shouted out.

“NO! HE’S GOING DOWN RIVER AGAIN!!” They saw as Seto was quickly pushed down the river. “LETS RIDE! DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF HIM!!”

They followed Seto as best they could through the heavy sheets of snow. Marik’s horse, Avaldamon, was the fastest of the others, and they actually passed Seto further ahead. Marik saw a fallen tree half in the ground and half in the water. Pulling Avaldamon to a hold, he jumped off and quickly ran along the tree. Yami and the others made it to the same tree where they saw Seto coming closer to Marik.

Seto saw Marik on the tree and reached his hand out. Marik got on his knees and gripped Seto’s hand, only to be pulled into the freezing water. Jou all but fainted at this time on Malik who was riding with him. Malik tried desperately to wake him up. Yami and Bakura dived off their horses, nearly dropping Yugi and Ryou. Yami landed in the snow as he gripped the rope, almost being pulled in the water if it wasn’t for Bakura adding his strength. But the water was strong, and Yami and Bakura were having a difficult time holding onto it. Marik had Seto clutched tightly to his side, holding on for dear life.

Tristan and Duke arrived quickly and they hurried to help Yami and Bakura. Marik started to pull himself in, but having only one free hand was making it quite difficult. He didn’t want to risk losing Seto if he asked him to climb on his back. Seto was pretty weak from being the water, and was barely clinging to him. He had to rely on his brothers and friends to help.

“RYOU, WE HAVE TO HELP PULL!!” Yugi shouted to Ryou.

“RIGHT, YUGI!!” Yugi and Ryou took some of the rope, using what little strength they had to help pull. Beowulf gripped the rope with mouth and started to pull too. They finally were able to start reeling him in. The rough winds and nearly frost bit hands were making the task harder than it was, and the rope started slipping again. Then, Avaldamon took the last remaining end of the rope behind Beowulf and started yanking. Everyone nearly fell backwards due to the sudden yank behind them. Avaldamon *note: I forgot to mention, Avaldamon was the name of my old horse, and Yami Marik is my favorite character, so I thought I would honor my horse and give him to Marik. ^_^* greatly aided in the rescue of Marik and Seto, and in no time at all, the two were pulled back onto the surface. Everyone cheered in relief.

“GET SOME BLANKETS AND FURS! HURRY!!”

A few of the men brought over some fur blankets and quickly wrapped them around Seto and Marik. Seto’s lips were a bright blue and he shivered uncontrollably. Marik threw his blankets off and gave them to Seto.

“Seto, speak to me!?” Yami shouted, worried for his friend. Seto looked at him and nodded lightly.

“I-I-I’m f-f-fine. Ju-jus-just co-l-d.” Yami turned to Marik.

“Marik, you ride with Seto! Your body temperature is unnatural and will prove helpful for him!” Marik nodded and helped Seto to his feet. Marik got on Avaldamon first, then Yami and Bakura helped lifted Seto to sit in front of Marik. Duke got another blanket and threw it over Marik’s shoulders.

“No need for you to get sick too!”

“J-J-Jou....p-pup-“ Bakura heard Seto’s words and answered.

“He fainted because he was so worried about you! When he wakes up, we’ll inform him of your safety!” Seto nodded and collapsed onto Marik, completely exhausted. Yami and Yugi got back up their horse and the group started to move out. Yami had to rely on his memory to help find the way to the caves. Seto had a much better idea of where they were going, but he is currently out of order. They would just have to make it the best they can.

Later that night, much to everyone’s relief, the sight of the cave came into view through the snow. They knew the ocean was on the other end of the cave, and they would have to go through to get to the ships. They could finally get out of the cold and on the way home! Seto now rode with Jou, who was ever so happy to have his lover back.

When they reached the mouth of the cave, everyone who had a horse let them go, *except Avaldamon* so they didn’t have to take them on the boat. The cave was fairly large in width and height, making it easy for the men to walk through. There were two tunnels once you got into the cave. Torches were made by what little firewood they had in the mule cart.

Bakura remembered that they both led to the boats. Yami ordered one of the men to take all the others through one side, and met him and the others at the boats. Marik sent Avaldamon with the men, knowing he would be safe with them. They wanted some alone time together with each other. So the Viking army went one way, and the rest went the other. Tristan was stuck carrying the torch and Yami was the first to break the silence.

“So Duke, I hope you noticed that Keith is traveling with us?” Yami smirked at him, making Duke turn away.

“Hmph. I have nothing to say on the matter.” Yami looked back at Jou and Seto, who were at the very back of them.

“Are you two doing alright? Seto?”

“I’m better now, Yami. However, I think I’m coming down with a cold.” He sneezed so cutely, almost sounding like a little mouse. He flushed a deep red as everyone either smiled, smirked, or grinned at him.

“That was SOOOO cute!” Bakura said with an evil smirk.

“SHUT UP!” Seto shouted, blushing even more when another mouse sneeze came on.

“I think I have some cheese in my handbag! Squeak, squeak!” Marik snickered, laughing at his own corny joke and making Setff uff up with anger like a blowfish.

“Oh you’re a riot, Marik.” Malik said, deadpan.

“Leave my Seto alone!” Jou pouted, clutching Seto’s arm tight. Seto puffed his chest out, sneering at Marik and Bakura.

“Yami?” Yugi asked, pulling on Yami’s sleeve. “Aren’t you afraid?” Yami raised a brow.

“Why should I be afraid?”

“Because these caves are haunted!” Ryou said from his place next to Bakura, holding his hand.

“That’s a load of bullshit!” Bakura said. “There are no such things as ghosts!”

“But it’s true!” Duke added in. “These are the caves of a long dead Celtic King! They say he’s buried somewhere in the grounds of these caves!” Jou nodded.

“Duke’s right. I’ve heard scary stories about this place all the time when I was little. Remember Tristan?”

“Oh yeah. The village elder used to tell us them all the time. They said that King even tortured his traitors and enemies here!” Yami chuckled.

“They’re just tales to keep kids away from the caves. Nothing more.”

“But Yami,” Ryou started “They say the ghost of that Celtic King still haunts the caves! There are so many stories that it HAS to be true!”

“I never believed them.” Malik had to add in his two cents. “I agree with Yami.”

“Yami,” Yugi whimpered, pulling Beowulf closer to him as he moved closer to Yami. “I’m afraid!”

“Now Yugi, there’s nothing to be-“

”What was that?!” Jou suddenly cried out, squeezing Seto’s arm.

“What was what?” Tristan asked him.

“That noise! Didn’t you hear it!?” Bakura chuckled.

“It’s your mind playing tricks.” Seto shook his head.

“No, it can’t be his head, because I heard it too. Everyone quiet!”

They all stood still in place, listening for any sound. Silence greeted them for a few minutes, until a low, anguished moan traveled through the cave. Everyone froze. The moan came again, this time sounded a bit closer. Yugi shook and hid behind Yami, who seemed to be trembling just slightly. A wail was heard next from behind them, and Seto turned his head to look, but was greeted with only darkness. Everyone seemed to have inched closer together. They could hear both the wail and moan louder now, as if the sounds were getting closer.

“What is it?” Malik asked in a whisper.

“I-I’m not sure...” Yami answered back, a bit of fear in his voice.

“Could it be an animal?” Bakura asked. “A sick animal, maybe?” Marik shook his head at Bakura.

“That moan could only belong to a human. That wail though, could be a wounded animal.”

“Quiet!” Seto hissed “I’m trying to listen!” Jou glared at him.

“What the hell for?!”

Suddenly, the sound of hoof beats echoed from far down in the cave. Everyone trembled in fear, hearing the hooves coming closer and closer. Beowulf started to whand and move widely about, signaling that something was wrong.

“Animals don’t lie!” Tristan said, completely shaken up now. They could feel the vibrations of the hooves as they came closer still, until it was nearly right in front of them. They all screamed as a cold gust of air blew between them as they heard the hoof beats fade into the other end of the cave. Practically, everyone’s hair was standing up strait, except for Marik’s, Yami’s, Yugi’s hair. Theirs were just super frizzy.

“What....was....that?!” Duke said very slowly.

“I don’t want to know!” Ryou whimpered. “Let’s get out of here!”

“We have no choice.” Yami said “We have to go forward.” The anguished moan returned, still ahead of them. Tristanked ked up and noticed the torch fire blowing, but he felt no wind. Jou turned blue and froze completely, feeling strong breath on the back of his neck. Seto noticed how tense his lover became, and suddenly turned from blue to white.

“Jou?” Everyone looked back at Jou.

“S-someone was-was-was just....breathe-breathing on the-the back of my neck!!” Yugi started to cry because he was terrified now. He hid under Yami’s tunic furs, trembling like a leaf during a storm.

“Let’s get out of this place!” Ryou whimpered. “I’m frightened! Even Beowulf is trembling!”

“M-maybe we could run!” Marik suggested. “Just run really fast down the cave hall and don’t look or stop for anything! How’s that sound?!” Everyone looked at each other, and nodded. Yami grabbed Marik by the back of his tunic and pushed him in the front.

“Your idea, you go first!” Marik hissed, quite frightened himself. There was no longer one wail, but about a dozen more. The cave seemed surrounded by them, and there blew a wind that gave no wind. They could see the wind flickering the fire, but couldn’t feel it on their skin. Beowulf started running around in circles, making little kneeling cries.

“That’s it!” Duke shouted. “RUN!! NOW!!!” It didn’t take long for everyone to suddenly dash with lighting speed, running down the cave hall. Bakura and Ryou were behind the others since both were still weak, Bakura was his illness and Ryou from his assault. Ryou looked behind him and screamed when saw a pair of glowing silver eyes behind him. They seemed to multiply as they got closer.

“OH MY GOD!!!” Ryou suddenly took off, this time pulling Bakura with him! Duke tripped on the ground and fell face first into dirt.
DON’DON’T LEAVE ME HERE!!!”

Tristan and Jou yanked him up, pushing him forward to get him running again. Marik suddenly felt air where the ground should be, and he fell through a hole. No one else noticed it as they all went down one by one. They all screamed as they slid down a rocky ravine into the dark. There was a sudden light shape at the bottom where they could all see. It turned into that of a ghostly, human skull. It’s mouth opened wide, welcoming them in. They screamed at the top of their lungs as they slid into the mouth one by one.

For a split second, there was nothing but darkness and silence. But, there was a loud sudden “splash”. Seto’ s head was the first to appear about the water he was currently kneelin. It. It was to dark to see anything, and Seto shouted for the others. He could hear splashing and coughing, spitting and weazing.

“Is everyone alright!?” He said, coughing. He had had just about enough water for one day.

“I think so!” He heard Tristan.

“I’m okay!” That was Yami.

“I got water up my nose! FUCK!” That was cly Bly Bakura.

“We’re fine! EEE! SOMETHING SLIMY TOUCHED MY LEG!” That was Malik.

“Seto! I’m here!” That was Jou.

“Where are you guys?!” Seto shouted, trying to see in the dark.

“I have Yugi!” That Ryou.

“That was the most terrifying experience of my entire life!!!” That was Duke. “AH! WHO OR WHAT DID I JUST BUMP INTO!?!”

“Thas mes me!” That voice was Yami’s.

“I found Yami!” Duke shouted!

“You all sound close!” That was Jou. “Where are you guys?!”

“If we knew, we’d be together dummy!!” That was Bakura again.

“Don’t talk to my lover that way!” Seto shouted as someone bumped into him. “Who’s that?!”

“Me, Malik!”

“I want to get out of here!” That was Yugi’s voice. “Where’s Beowulf?!” They heard Bakura yelp.

“I found him! Or rather, he found ME! THAT DAMN THING IS IN MY CROTCH AGAIN!”

“Malik, is that y Mar Marik asked as he started patting at someone’s arms.

“No! It’s me, Duke! HANDS OFF!”

“OUCH!!” there was a slap from the right and another splash from the left.

“GODS BE DAMNED I HATE BEING WET!” Bakura again, no doubt. Bakura cried out as someone tripped over him, landing another splash. “WHO THE HELL-?!”

“Bakura?!” That was Ryou. “It’s me and Yugi!” The three reached their arms out and managed to find each other.

“Me, Bakura, and Ryou are together!” Yugi shouted to the others.

“Hey yeah! I think I see Yugi’s hair!” That was Tristan as he bumped into Yugi. “Yug?”

“It’s me, Tristan!”

“Where the hell are you guys!?” Seto growled out

“Yeah!” That was Malik. “I’m getting scared here and-OW!”

“Sorry!” Seto smiled.

“JOU!”

“Yeah, I found Duke, Yami and Marik on the way!”

“I see you guys!” That was Tristan as a sudden soft, orange glow lit up the cave. Tristan was holding the torch, completely lit. Everyone sighed or smiled in relief as they all saw each other.

“Hey,” Started Yami. “How did you light that thing?” Tristan smirked.

“I have my ways.”

“That’s great!” Shouted Yugi. “Now lets get the hell out of here!” Everyone stopped and looked at Yugi, shocked at the sudden use of language. Yugi flushed. “Well...I always say things like that when I’m scared!”

“He’s right.” Ryou said. “I don’t want to meet up with anymore ghosts or skulls!”

“I see a way out!” Shouted Marik, pointing strait. “Look! There’s another tunnel!” Everyone smiled.

“Well, what are we waiting for?!” Yami smirked. “Like Yugi said, ‘lets get the hell out of here’!”

With woops of delight and victory, the group ran into the tunnel, not stopping for anyone or anything. They have had enough of this cave and were ready to leave. They coulill ill hear the moaning and wailing, the cries of pain and the groans of torment. But they all held their breathes and just kept running forward. There was a small, white light ahead of them which was the exit.

Once they all got through the exit and saw the other men already on the ships, they plopped down to the ground. All were breathing heavily and deadly pale. One of the men came running up to them, worry written on his face.

“What happened? The lot of you lookeke yke you’ve just seen a ghost?” Their eyes widened and nodded, all n’sync with each other. *and no, not the boy band! Yuck! >_<* The man just sweatdropped and turned away. “Well, the ships are ready and the snow has stopped. I don’t think it snows by the beach.”

“No shit.” Marik said, being the first on to talk. The man whimpered, turned chibi and ran back to the ship. The others looked at one another.

“Well, let’s get out of these caves!” Yami said, standing up and taking Yugi with him. Everyone got up and nodded, heading for the large dragon long boats.

The group boarded onto one ship of the four that were there. Avaldamon was on Marik’s ship and they tied Beowulf next to the horse. Yami gave the signal and the men started rowing one ship at a time out of the cave and into the ocean. They were still pretty shaken up by the all the ghosts they had just experienced, but tried to ignore it. Well, Yami, Bakura, Marik, and Seto did, but the others all huddled together, still scared out of their wits! Yami walked over to them and gave them a reassuring smile.

“Don’t worry, we’re sailing for your new home now. No more ghosts.”

“Will we like this home?” Yugi asked from his place in Malik’s arms who was trying to comfort him.

“I’m sure you will, Yugi.” Yami smiled. “Just wait until you see the place were you are going to live!”

“UP HERE GUYS!” Everyone turned their heads upwards as they saw Bakura had climbed the mast. “WE’RE GOING BACK HOME, MEN!” Cheers went up from all four boats after Bakura’s words. Yami chuckled and turned back to the others.

“Oh, and just so you know,” He put a finger to his lips. “Don’t tell ANYONE about the ghost experience or I will be forced to kill you. Get it, got it, good.” Their eyes all widened in fear, making Yami laugh even more. “I’m just kidding. But, seriously, don’t tell anyone about the ghosts! Okay?” Yugi smiled.

“Because you have to save face, right Yami?”

“That’s right, Yugi. If it ever got out that we screamed like girls and ran away, we’d be laughed at forever!” They all giggled “So let’s keep it between all of us, okay?”

“Okay Yami!” Yugi said, and the rest all answered “yes” or nodded in response.

“Good. Now boys, we have a long sail ahead of us. Do you think you can handle it?” They all nodded, mumbling. “Okay...well, if you feel you need to vomit do it over the side of the boat.”

“IT’S OFF TO NORMANDY EVERYONE!”

Marik shouted from his place at the front of the dragon head, swinging his axe around. The boats were finally out in open water, and the journey home has begun.
