Relative Insanity
Chapter 11
Bakura hated hospitals. He hated the bright lights. He hated the smells. He hated that he had to bring Ryou here. Yami and Bakura sat with Ryou in the E.R., only a curtain separating them from all the other tormented souls. Ryou’s eyes were closed, the occasional tear slipping through his lids and sliding down his cheek. No one was talking - the oppressive knowledge that they were leaving Ryou behind hanging over their heads.
Yami and Bakura tend to draw attention to themselves wherever they go, and it didn’t take long for the doctor to become suspicious and do some checking. A crisis team had already been called and it wouldn’t be much longer before they validated their suspicions and realized that they were wanted. It was hard to get a feel for what was going down, the doctor had spoken very little as he sutured Ryou’s wrists, the probable cause being the intimidating stares of Bakura and Yami. So now they sat waiting, for what exactly they weren’t too sure.
Ryou’s voice was barely audible, pulling Bakura from his thoughts. “Bakura – you should go before they realize that you’re MIA too. You don’t need to go back with me.”
“I’m not leaving you here!”
“Ryou’s right.” Yami looked hard at Bakura. “You don’t need to go back, and they’ll take you by force once they figure it out.” Yami placed a hand lightly on Bakura’s shoulder. “ I’ll stay with him.”
Bakura shook his head, clenching his hands into fists at his sides. “No! I’m not-“
“Go!” Ryou sat up, tears streaming down his face. “Listen to me! I know I need help, I’ve always known. Let me go back, get back on my meds…get my head together. I’ll be 18 in a few months, and when I get out, if you still want me…”
“Ryou-“ Bakura sat on the edge of the narrow bed, taking hold of Ryou’s hand. “I’ll always want you. Always.”
“Then wait for me.” Ryou could hear a cop’s radio in the distance accompanied by approaching footsteps. “Go!” Bakura kissed Ryou tenderly, tasting his tears on his lips, and left quickly without looking back. Yami reached for Ryou’s hand, squeezing it soothingly as the curtain was pulled aside revealing the doctor and a uniformed cop. This wasn’t getting any easier.
Bakura made it outside before doubling over, tears blurring his vision. He hated himself for letting Ryou down, taking him back to what he’d escaped from. The thought of losing Ryou was enough to force him to let go. He wasn’t strong enough to keep Ryou safe, and he readily admitted it. He sat in the car for two hours waiting for Yami – staring blindly out the window and chain smoking, lost in the depths of his own despair.
Yami drove them home in silence, refusing to divulge any information until he’d gotten Bakura out of there. When the cop came, he was looking for Bakura too, and there was no way Yami was going to give him up. The house was gloomy when they returned; a steady rain had started to fall during their drive, fitting to their mood. Bakura kicked off his boots and threw himself on the couch without bothering to remove his jacket. “If you don’t fill me in soon, I’m going to hurt you.”
Yami returned from the kitchen, sitting on the floor next to the coffee table with a small bowl. He meticulously pulled seeds and stems out of the bud in the bowl while he filled in his friend. “They’re taking him back, and they should.” Yami held up his hand before Bakura could say anything, shaking his head. “Just listen to me, okay? They’ll take him back and get him stabilized. He won’t be there forever. Like he said, in a couple of months he’ll be 18, and it’ll be easier for him to get out on his own. Get out and come back, if you haven’t come to your senses by then.”
“This is all my fault.”
“Yup, it is… you didn’t bother to think about the implications, you never do.” Yami took a paper out of the pack and started skillfully rolling a joint, licking the edge of the paper and sealing it.
Bakura laughed at his friend’s honesty. “You wouldn’t know what to do if you couldn’t tell me ‘I told you so’ all the time.” He watched Yami spark up, inhaling the sweet smoke and hand him the joint. “Do you think he’ll be okay?”
Yami exhaled towards the ceiling, smiling. “Yeah, he’s a strong kid, he has to be if he’s with you.” Yami was glad that things were still fine between them, despite the major fuck up that went down. He felt somewhat responsible for Jou, and hoped he didn’t have to take things further.
Bakura tapped his shoulder, handing him the joint, pulling him from his thoughts. “What did you tell the cop?”
“That I found him a few days ago and took him in.”
“What about me?”
“What about you?” Yami smirked, exhaling smoke. “Never saw you before in my life. I was lucky the doctor was scared shitless of us – he didn’t say a word.”
Bakura leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes, letting the effects of the weed relax him. “Now what am I going to do?”
“Stay here, make some cash, and wait… see what happens.”
Bakura smiled, feeling his eyelids grow heavy – relieved that Ryou was safe. Wait and see what happens, that didn’t sound too bad.
“Ryou! Phone!”
Ryou smiled, walking down the hall towards the payphone. He’d been back for a month now and was feeling much better. His wrists had healed, leaving stark pink scars to remind him of the past, which wasn’t really a bad thing. He was back on his meds and could actually think of the future. He had two months until his 18th birthday and he was already talking to his therapist about discharge. He probably wouldn’t be getting out until well after his birthday, but that was okay with him if he could leave feeling normal; he deserved that and so did Bakura.
“Hello?”
“Hey, how’re you doing?”
“Since this morning? Fine.” Ryou laughed and the sound made Bakura’s heart beat fiercely in his chest. “You?”
“I miss you, but I’m okay.”
“Oh, I talked to my DMH worker and he’s thinking they might be convinced to overlook the open residential step if I can secure a job and a place to live.”
“Mmm… that would be great.”
“It still wouldn’t be for a few months yet, if I do well. But now I have something to work for – it’s going to work this time.”
“I know it is.”
“Listen, I have to go – they’re calling group. Talk to you tonight?”
“Of course. Love you.”
“I know you do, love you too. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Bakura hung up the phone, a small smile on his face. He could do this – he could wait. He’d work for Yami until Ryou got out and it would give them a nice cushion to live off of until they figured out what they were going to do.
“Everything okay?” Yami pulled Bakura out of his thoughts, walking into the kitchen and opening the fridge.
“Yeah, fine.”
“Good. I need you focused if we’re going to pull this off smoothly.”
“No problem.” Bakura grinned, lighting up a smoke. “The dumb fuck just doesn’t know when to quit.”
“Nope – and he knows too much to be left alone. He’s a liability I can’t afford. Such a shame, he was such a good lay.” Yami smirked, grabbing Bakura’s cigarette and talking a drag “Jou’s luck has just run out.” Yami finished loading the gun on the table and slipped it into the back of his pants. “Ready to go?”
“Yeah, let’s get this done, I promised Ryou I’d call tonight.”
“After tonight all the loose ends should be tied up nicely.”
The two men headed outside, Bakura smiling to himself with thoughts of a bright future. What’s one life for the happiness of another? It was kill or be killed, and for his friends nothing was beyond him.
The End
A/N: Yay, I’ve actually completed something…is it cold in here? I think Hell just froze over! I’d like to thank everybody who read and reviewed and supported me though this. I hope you enjoyed it.
I’d also like to note that I was really tempted to end it tragically… I wanted to have Jou take out Bakura in a drive by and send Ryou into a downward spiral he would never recover from, but I figured I wouldn’t be making any friends and no one would ever read my stuff again, so I went with choice two, and ended it all nice nice.
Please tell me what you think!
