Chapter 12: To the Caves!

Disclaimer: I do not own Yugioh

The camp was splattered with blood. Dead bodies, some English AND Viking were sprawled out on the ground, horrible mutilated. Various limbs and heads lay near or far from the bodies. Crows were already picking at the bodies while vultures circled over head. The ground was damp and slippery with not mud, but blood. The only people who seem to still be standing were the Vikings, but no English men in sight. The only thing that broke the others from their shocked stares were their lovers walking up to them.

All of them were drenched in blood and dirt. Their weapons stained with bright red liquid that trickled onto the already soaked ground. They couldn’t tell if it was their blood or the blood of the soldiers. They were breathing heavy and looked completely exhausted.

Jou placed Ryou down on the ground gently and ran for Seto, gripping him in a tight hug. Seto sighed and hugged his waist with one arm, the other hand holding his sword. Malik was about to vomit as he watched Marik try to shake off a string of intestines that was wrapped around his ankle. Bakura just walked over tou aou and scooped him up, walking silently away. Seto and Jou followed suite, then Marik and Malik. The only two left were Yami and Yugi.

Yami and Yugi just looked at each other, Yugi clutching Beowulf close. Yami couldn’t get over the look of pure fear that Yugi gave him. His violet eyes were watery, foreshadowing tears and his body trembled. Yami dropped his sword and took a step towards Yugi, who cringed a bit.

“Yugi, don’t be afraid, it’s alright.” Yami held out his blood stained hand to Yugi, putting on a gentle smile. Yugi whimpered as he took in the dirtied hand, and buried his face in Beowulf’s neck. “Yugi, please, there is nothing to be afraid of. The fighting is over now. We’re safe.” Yugi peeked out one wide, violet eye. “Come on, let’s get you back to the tent.” Yugi nodded and shakily took his hand.

Duke zig zagged around the dead bodies, his mind focused on only one thing. He didn’t fight in this battle, but did a lot of scouting and watching. The thing that stood out the most to him was the fact that Keith had been nowhere in sight. Duke’s intuitions have never been wrong before. He knew there was something shady about that guy!

He found the tent that he heard Keith occupied and peeked in. Sure enough, there was Keith, completely clean with his weapons still on their racks! He sat at his table, writing something and eating an apple, as if nothing happened! Duke growled and threw the flap aside, letting himself be known. Keith looked at him and glared, quickly getting up from his seat.

“What the hell do you want?! You can’t just barge in here!” Duke put his hands on his hips.

“I noticed that you were missing when it came time to fight!” Keith snorted.

“Then it’s also clear that YOU weren’t fighting either since you were so busy looking for me! And you are wrong! I WAS at the battle, you just missed me!”

“That’s a bunch of bullshit! Yoe COe COMPLETELY free of any blood as are your weapons!”

“I didn’t use MY weapons! I grabbed whatever one I could find around the area!” Duke scoffed.

“That’s a real lame excuse.” Keith’s eyes widened for a second, then they went back to glaring.

“Wait a minute, what are you getting at here?!” Duke just glared back at him. “You think I had something to do with it, don’t you!” Duke hmphed.

“It certainly fits your motive.”

“And just what IS my motive, pray tell?”

“It’s clear you dislike your brothers and would do anything to gain a rightful place in their family. Since you were born the son of a farmer, you grew up with hatred towards them because they were born into high society. And I know you are looked at differently by the family because of what status you hold. You can’t help it, and you certainly shouldn’t hold a grudge over people who had nothing to do with your pathetic life!” Keith growled and reached over, gripping Duke’s tunic front in his fist.

“You must think you’re touch shit, don’t you! Well let me tell you something, you know NOTHING about my family OR me!” Duke grabbed at his fist, trying to free himself. But Keith’s grip was strong and he found he was held firm. “You shouldn’t go around accusing people you hardly know!”

“I sensed something off about you when we first met! I’ve known men like you! A no good snake in the grass!” Keith let out a holler as he threw Duke into the nearest object which happened to be the table. Duke hit his lower back on the edge and he fell to his knees, one hand supporting his weight while the other rubbed his back. He yelped as Keith yanked him up by his hair.

“From now on, you better stay out of my sight! If I catch you so much as LOOKING at me, I’ll slit that pretty little throat! And it doesn’t matter if you tell Yami or the others what you think about this whole thing! They won’t believe you!” He drug Duke by his hair and roughly threw him out of the tent. “Don’t EVER let me catch you snooping around my tent either, or I’ll send you to that ‘heaven’ place!”

Duke rubbed his head and struggled to stand up. The pain in his lower back almost seemed to paralyze him, but he could still feel his legs. His knees wobbled a bit as he began to walk, but did his best to ignore it. He had to find Yami!

Yami’s Tent:

Yami, Marik, Bakura, Jou, Seto, and Tristan all gathered in the tent to discuss the current battle.

“What the hell brought all that one?!” Bakura shouted in question. Yami answered.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out, Bakura.” Bakura hmphed and Yami turned to Seto, who was leaning back on the tent wall. “What do you have to say to all this?”

“It’s obvious to me that this was a planned attack.” Everyone became shocked. “If you noticed, the English fought in a more organized way then before. Usually they just barge in and fight, but this one was thought out. They knew when it was best to attack us, and where to find us. And my conclusion is this,” Everyone held their breath. “There’s a rat in this nest.” Everyone gasped and looked at each other.

“That can’t be!” Marik shouted. “We know all our men PERSONALLY! We’re all brothers in arms!” Yami nodded.

“I agree with Marik. It’s unlikely that someone of our clan would rat us out just like that!” Seto sneered at them.

“Am I the only one alone on this!?” Another voice entered the room.

“I agree with Seto!” Everyone turned to see Duke standing the tent, resting his weight on his bow.

“Duke, what happened to you?” Tristan asked.

“I’ll tell you what happened to me. It was your lousy, back stabbing cousin!”

“Keith hurt you?” Yami asked, a bit confused. “Why?”

“I second Seto! I believe Keith had something to with the attack!”

“KEITH?!” Everyone shouted at the same time, startling Duke.

“How can you be sure?” Seto asked.

“I noticed that he wasn’t fighting with us at the battle! When I confronted him with it, he got all defensive, and attacked me openly!” Marik spoke next.

“Keith is just like that. He gets angry when he gets accused of something.” He smirked at Bakura who smirked back. “And we were ALWAYS accusing him of something to get him trouble with our uncle! So it’s no surprise he goes berserk!” Duke shook his head.

“But Keith has the best motive! I know for a fact that he despises all of you! It’s pure jealousy!!”

“Duke,” Yami started “I’m going to make this clear to you. I know Keith comes off as a real asshole, however, you do not know my family at all. Plus, you haven’t really sat down and talked to Keith yet either. He is of our blood, and I don’t think he would ever go against us.”

“But, when I first met him, he just rubbed me the wrong way! There is something about that just-“ Yami sent him a glare.

“Stop sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong!” Duke was taken aback by Yami’s tone of voice with him. He quickly turned away and left the tent, Tristan following after. Jou rubbed the back of his head worriedly.

“Um, Yami? Don’t get mad at me for this....but, well, in the pass, Duke has never been wrong before-“

”Stop this talk about Keith!” Yami raised his voice. “I will hear no more of it!”

“Yes sir.” Jou said, quickly. They were silent for a few seconds, then Marik broke the ice.

“So Yami, what are we going to do? If it was a planned attack like Seto said, then the English know where we are.” Yami nodded, his hands folded at his mouth.

“You’re right, Marik. I KNOW that Seto has never been wrong before, so I’ll go with him on this. If there is a traitor in our clan, than we won’t be here for them to tattle on us.”

“What do you mean, Yami?” Bakura asked.

“Our only option is to sail back home.”

“WHAT?!” Yami held his ears, the loud sudden sound hurting his ears.

“What the hell for?!” Marik asked.

“Think about it. If the traitor is from our clan, then he will come home with us. Even if he stays and tells the English more about us, I highly doubt that they’ll come all the way to Norway to fight us on our land. For them, that would be pure suicide. And if we find out someone is NOT on the boats, then we found our traitor.” Everyone looked at each other and nodded. “We set out for the boats tomorrow, so get packing.”

Seto’s Tent:

Jou yawned as he sat up from his spot next to Seto on the furs. He shivered as he felt the cold air tingle his skin. He stood up slowly, not wanting to wake Seto as he slipped his heavy fur cloak on. Walking to the tent flap, he noticed a bit of white powdery substance at the foot of it. He peeked his head out of the tent, and was met with soft, silent snowflakes. Just great!!

“Seto, wake up! SETO!!” Seto shot up from the bed, pulling out the little dagger he kept under the pillow.

“Jou! What’s wrong?!”

“It’s snowing!!” Seto got up from the bed, ignoring the cold air, and ed Jed Jou at the flap.

“So it is. Damn, and we have to leave for the boats today!” Seto looked up into the sky and frowned. “Lousy weather.”

Yami’s Tent:

“Yami, do we really have to leave?” Yami packed the last of their things and turned to Yugi.

“I’m afraid so, Yugi.” Yugi pouted and looked at the ground. “Do you not want to come with us?” He shot his head up.

“Oh, no, I’d go anywhere with you, Yami!” Yami smiled. “It’s just...that...”

“Just what, love?”

“Well, I’ve never known anywhere else except my country, my village, and your camp. I’ve never been out of my country before. And besides, I can’t even speak your language! Not even one word! I’ll be like a fish out of water there!” Yami chuckled.

“Don’t worry, Yugi. It’s a long ways back to Norway, we’ll teach you!” Yugi’s eyes lit up and his smile brightened.

“Really Yami!? You’ll teach me to speak like you!?”

“Of course! You’ll catch on in no time at all!” Yugi’s happy face turned into one of worry.

“Yami, isn’t it dangerous to travel now? I mean, the snow has come very early this year!”

“We don’t have a choice, Yugi. We are men who take risks. Besides, in our land, we’re almost completely surrounded by snow! We’re used to it, so you don’t have to worry. I’ll keep you nice and warm.” Yami wiggled his eyebrows, making Yugi blush happily. “Lets go Yugi. The others are waiting.”

“Yes. But Yami, where are your boats? Wouldn’t someone have stolen them by now if you kept them by the shore?” Yami shook his head.

“No, we hid them inside the caves.”

“Caves?” Yugi raised an eyebrow.

“Yes, caves. Up north of here there are a number of small caves that start at the ocean. It was easy for us to sail our ships through and hide them deep within the caves. That is where we are going, to the caves!”

Everyone gathered at the front of the camp facing the woods. Only Marik, Yami, Bakura, Seto, Jou, and Tristan got horses, and their lovers got to ride with them. (Except Duke who wanted to walk, he could have rode with Tristan) They had two mules set up to pull the wagon with anything they needed for the journey. Malik wautinuting over the fact that he didn’t get his house and Jou actually started to tear up a bit.

“Pup? Why are you crying? I hate to see you cry.” Jou sniffed.

“It’s just, I hate to leave this place, Seto. I fell in love with you here, and it became my home. Once again, I’m going to have to leave a wonderful place that is dear to me.” Seto took Jou’s hand in his.

“I’m sorry, lover. I took you away from your real home and-“

”Don’t apologize, Seto. In a way, I’m glad you took me from there, I got to spend my time loving you.” Seto smiled.

“You’ll love our new home, Jou. I promise you that.” Jou nodded and gripped Seto’s hand harder.

“I’m sure I will, Seto, as long as I’m with you.”

Yami sounded his horn to begin the journey, scaring the living daylights out of Yugi. It was so sudden! And soon, everyone was on their way to the boats.

Two days later

The light, gentle snow turned into an abominable blizzard. The snowflakes were thick as the wind blew roughly through the air. The Vikings moved slowly through the snow which now came up to their calves. And what made the whole situation worse was that they had to move through a field surrounded by downs. *Note: “downs” are large hills in England where they say there are buried Celtic kings. I’m not sure about that one. But over the years, they grew grass and became downs.* They lost track of time and where they were going. The navigation was mostly left to Yami and Seto, who were having a hard time staying on course.

Ryou hugged Bakura’s waist tight, trying to bare it with the snow. The fur sash he had on his back wasn’t doing much good to block the cold. Bakura had to take most of the furs since he was still battling his sickness. Malik stole most of the furs from Marik and buried his face in Marik’s chest. Marik had only one fur cloak on, but he was a tough guy and braved the snow. Yugi was curled up inside Yami’s multiple cloaks since he was so small. Yami’s arms were clutched tight on the reigns so Yugi could lean back and tuck his legs up closer to his chest. Sometimes being small had its advantages. Seto kept a strait face and sat perfectly still as he rode his horse. It was as if he didn’t feel the cold at all, while Jou on the other hand, was freezing his ass off! Duke actually ended up riding with Tristan, since his lower back still hurt and was harder for him to lift his legs in the snow.

“English weather sucks.” Marik just said, randomly.

As they continued on, they could see mountains in sight. They were still a long ways from the caves, and the snow only slowed them down more. The trees soon cleared and the Vikings stopped to look at a raging river. Bakura said it was flowing from the mountains, where the REAL snow was. He had to be right since bits of ice burgs were pushed along by the water. The men continued on along the river. Marik told Yami that they had to be going the right way because he remembered following the river to get to camp. The word was quickly passed down until the very end of the group. Yami turned his horse to face the men.

“DON’T WALK TO CLOSE TO THE EDGE, MEN!” Yami shouted.

Not long after he had said those words, the unthinkable happened. The snow gave way under Seto’s horse, and they both fell into the river, quickly being pushed by the angry water. Jou screamed Seto’s name, alerting everyone’s attention.

“SETO FELL IN THE RIVER!!”
