Chapter 11 - Heaven Torn Asunder - Yugi POV
/Argh! Sunlight!/
I rolled over so the light streaming in through the window
was not on my face.
/Oh gods! My head!/
I groaned as my escapades the night before came rushing
back to haunt me. I felt like i'd been stuck ina blender.
I sat up quickly.
/Yami! Oh....../
The rest of my memories came flooding back. I lay down
again, a dreamy smile on my face. Sure i'd never look at
Bakura the same way again, but Yami.....
/What a night.... I wonder if he remembers./
I must seem foolish, giddy as a schoolgirl head over
heels in love.
I curled up on my side. Somehow the ache in my head
and stabbing knives in my gut had receded.
/I wonder if Joey and Tristan made it home./
The urge to piss finally forced me out of bed. Having done so
I raced back to bed, burrowing under the covers.
I sighed. For once I was truly hapy.
The phone ringing pierced my reverie.
"Go away!" I yelled, burying my head under the blankets.
Whoever was calling was not dicouraged. The phone droned on
and on and on and on and on etc.
Angrily I leapt out of bed and snatched the cordless from the
hallway.
"What?" I snapped.
"Morning Yugi. Listen, can Bakurd I d I come over? Theres
something you have to know." Ryou replied.
"What is it?" I yawned.
"uh... you should hear this in person." Ryou stated.
/Is he crying?/
"Are you ok?" I asked.
"Yeah, sure, so can we come over?" Ryou said.
"Ok." I said.
"Good. See you soon." Ryou finished.
"Bye." I said, yawning again.
I hung up and tossed the phone on my desk. I yawned,
yet again, and pulled on a pair of black jeans. I ran a comb
through my hair and went to see if Joey or Tristan were home.
They weren't.
/Must have been some party./
I went into the kitchen to make a strong black coffee. I took a
couple of aspirin while the kettle was boiling. I grabbed my
emergancy cigarette packet from the top of the fridge and took one out.
/No lighter... Great.../
Improvising, I turned the stove on and lit my smoke form the hotplate.
I switched the stove off and turned to the kettle that was whistling madly.
I poured the hot water into my cup.
/Instant coffee.... yuck!/
Alas, it was all we had. I took a sip of my very strong black coffee and
made a face.
/Disgusting./
But it did the job. I was almost fully awake.
There was a knock on the door. I put my coffee on the table, ashed my
cigarette in the sink and went to open the door.
"hey guys." I said to Bakura and Ryou.
They both looked like hell. Bakura pushed past me into the kitchen. I
stepped aside to let Ryou in then shut the door.
I followed them into the kitchen. Bakura had my packet of cigarettes
and was sitting at the kitchen table. He took out a smoke and lit it, then he
put his lighter on the table.
Ryou perched on the chair next to Bakura. He appeared uncomfortable and edgy.
He snatched the cigarette from Bakura and inhaled deeply.
/Ryou smoking?/
Bakura lit another smoke.
"Alright guys. Whats wrong?" I asked, starting to get worried.
I sat down opposite them, nursing my coffee.
Ryou burst into tears.
"Tristan was killed last night." Bakura said quietly.
/Tristan dead?/
"Please tell me you're joking..." I stated, tears filling my eyes.
"I wish I was but wait, theres more. Joey killed him." Bakura finished.
Ryou was wailing miserably, puffing away on his cigarette like his
life depended on it.
Once again I felt like i'd been stuffed in a blender, and then hit by a truck.
"Joey?" I whispered, shaking my head.
Bakura was silent.
"Are you sure?" I hissed.
"y-yes. I saw him standing over Tristan.... with the gun....
Tristans blood was everywhere...." Ryou sobbed.
I closed my eyes, my mind reeling.
/Joey wouldn't do this! He couldn't! He was framed... It wasn't him.../
I covered my face with my hands, crying freely.
I shook my head.
"It wasn't him." I stated.
Bakura looked at me, I cringed at the pity in his eyes.
"Bakura, Joey is my best friend. I know him better than anyone.
He wouldn't do this. I'm telling you it wasn't him." I cried.
Hope flared in Ryou's sad eyes.
"Y-You think he was framed Yugi?" he whispered.
I nodded.
Ryou retreated into silent thought.
"Ridiculous." Bakura muttered.
"Some friend you are. So ready to believe that Joey would kill
Tristan." I hissed.
Bakura's gaze hardened.
"Stop you guys! Please!" Ryou interrupted.
He reached for Bakuras hand.
"Yugi has a point. I never actually saw Joey pull the trigger.
Nobody heard a gunshot." he stated.
I nodded.
"Where is Joey?" I asked.
"Jail. They're keeping him in custody." Ryou answered softly.
"We have to get him out!" I cried.
"We can't. I'm not condemning him Yugi, but the evidence is
so strong against him." Bakura said.
I slumped back in the chair.
The phone rang. I reached for the receiver beside the stairs.
"Hello..." I mumbled. "Hi Mrs Taylor. Yes.... Yes i'm so sorry.
We'll be there. Alright. You too. Bye."
I slammed the phone down.
"Tristan's funeral will be tomorrow afternoon. His mom wants us all
there." I said, then burst into tears again.
"He's really gone." I sobbed.
Ryou cried with me. Bakura was getting angry.
"Damn it all!" he cried.
Ryou jumped.
"How the hell are we meant to deal with this? We're kids for
fuck sake. Shit like this just doesn't happen." Bakura continued.
"Calm down Bakura. We can't change the past." I said coldly.
Bakura glared at me. Ryou kept crying.
"There has to be a way to free Joey. There just has to be." I murmured.
Ryou nodded solemnly in agreement.
I leapt out of the chair.
"Where are you going?" Bakura asked.
"I'm going to see Joey." I stated, shrugging on Joey's denim jacket.
Bakura and Ryou were close on my heels as I stormed out the door.
