Chapter Ten
Joey stared at the wall. Five minutes had passed and nothing had changed.
Lisa stared at Joey. The question she was dying to ask him still burning a hole inside her, his dark mood had for the most part of her visit, kept her from saying anything.
“So do you have a purpose for being here? Or did you pull the short straw on the suicide watch?” Joey snarled at her irritably.
Lisa winced at his tone and took a deep breath. “Are you gonna tell me what you did to get this little vacation, or am I going to have to wait and hear it through the office grapevine? And you know that you are the hot topic of the week.”
He grimaced and turned his gaze on her, burning a hole in her forehead.
“You sure you want to know? The mere fact that you’re my partner is enough to make you a bit of a pariah, you might be better off muddling around in blissful ignorance.” He joked darkly.
Lisa threw a pillow at him from the sofa she was sitting on.
“Come on Wheeler, partners share shit. Even the personal stuff!” She demanded hotly as he deftly dodged the incoming missile.
“Truth is, I probably made the biggest mistake of my life and broke every rule in the book.” He closed his eyes tiredly.
“What kind of answer is that Wheeler?” She demanded. “I know you and Kaiba don’t like each other too much, but what did you do to piss him off so bad. This guy is out for your blood. Talk about making powerful enemies.”
Joey looked at her again with an expression that was somewhere between sadness and self loathing. “He caught me and Isis having sex in his office.”
Lisa’s jaw almost hit the floor at the quite admission and let out a scream.
“Joey Wheeler!!! You dog!! Man, its either feast or famine with you isn’t it? One minute you’re damn near a priest, you’re so celibate, and now you’re banging Seto Kaiba’s wife.” Her body started to shake with the laughter she was trying desperately to keep in.
“Oh God.” She gasped, trying to get some breath. “Of all people, Isis Kaiba, the ice queen. Oh God.” She doubled over, waving a hand in front of her face.
Joey couldn’t help but grin at her histrionics.
“ Come on Lis, it’s not like I planed for this to happen. One minute I was having a calm conversation about the damn cards, and the next minute we’re rolling around in front of the fire place like a couple of teenagers.” He defended himself weakly.
Lisa paused a moment from her fit of giggles, somewhat more serious.
“You mean this wasn’t the first time?” She asked quietly.
Joey hid his face unable to answer her question.
”This is too much!” She shouted. “I didn’t think you had this in you.” A look of wonder and awe passed across her face for a moment as an thought dawned on her. “Seto Kaiba walked in on you too. Holy Shit! He must have had a nuclear meltdown!!”
Joey shuddered in remembrance and tossed the pillow back at her head. “You could say that, hence the nice little vacation that was forced on me.”
Lisa looked like she wanted to say something more when the e she shrilled, cutting her off.
“Wheeler.” Joey growled, irritated, into the phone.
“Joey?” A timid voice asked, causing Joey to sit up ramrod straight in his chair, his grip tightening on the receiver. LisaLisa raised an eyebrow at the sudden change.
“Yeah, yeah kiddo, it’s me.” He said in a much softer voice.
“Joey, they took my baby.” The voice wavered with panic. “You have to get my baby back, Joey.” She pleaded.
He could hear the fear in her voice and closed his eyes in frustration.
“It’s okay. I’ll get your baby back for you, Serenity. You big brother always takes care of you doesn’t he?” He could almost hear her smiling on the other end of the phone as her voice brightened.
“I knew you’d help us, Joey. You always take care of us.”
“Sure, Kiddo. Now why don’t you go back to your room and wait. I bet that your baby will be brought back in a few minutes.” He cajoled her.
“Okay. I love you, big brother.” She said happily.
Joey sighed tiredly, running his hand through his hair in a familiar habit
“I love you too, Serenity.” He hung up the phone and turned to Lisa. “I gotta make a quick call,” He said, offering no explanation, hitting the speed dial on his phone, which appeared to be answered a few moments later.
“Dr. Meagher?” He asked.
Lisa watched him listen to the person on the other end of the phone respond.
“This is Joey Wheeler. I don’t know who’s working over there at the hospital tonight, but obviously they aren’t very well informed when it comes to my sister.” He responded in a little less than friendly tone.
“You wanna make sure they return the damn doll to her and for the love of Ra put it in magic marker on the fucking door that they are never to take the damn thing from her again!” Lisa could only stare at him in shock as he raged at the doctor.
“I don’t need her going to back to the way she was. I can’t deal with that right now.” He paused as the doctor must have apologized assured him that he would fix the situation.
“Thanks.” He hung up the phone and sighed.
Lisa opened her mouth to say something, but quickly shut it as he put his face in his hands to hide the tears that were streaming down his face.

Mako leaned against the wheelhouse of the boat and smiled at Tristan, who was attempting to work a fishing line off the side. He wasn’t much of a fisherman, but that never stopped him from trying, his love of the sport made up for his lack of ability.
“I can already hear the fish screaming for their lives.” He teased good-naturedly.
Tristan shot him a look that spoke volumes, accompanied by a quick wave of his middle finger.
He could hear Hiroe chuckling from where she was laying on the deck, catching some sun.
“So tell me, my little flower. How did you get Fumiki convinced to let you return to Domino City with us?” He asked, curious as to the sudden change in attitude that his step mother seemed to have.
Hiroe smiled and looked at him over the tops of her sunglasses. “I told her that I thought it would be best if I saw your home before we married, it is tradition that I stay with your family at their home before the wedding.”
He arched an eyebrow in confusion. “But, Hiroe, I have no family here.”
“Yes, Mako, I know that, but it is still tradition that I see your home. Plus, I assured her that Tristan would be an excellent chaperone.”
He could hear Tristan snort with amusement. He couldn’t help but to smile at that comment.
“This would be the same Tristan whose name you were calling out last night?” he asked, causing her to blush a deep red.
“Stop it, Mako, that’s not nice.” She chided. “I just want to see the world a little bit and this is the perfect opportunity. I can’t wait to see where you two live. We have such a great future a head of us.”
Mako smiled at her enthusiasm despite the cold chill that crept down his spine.

Mokuba put his arms around Kyla and drew her in close, putting his face in her golden hair and inhaling her scent.
She was so beautiful that sometimes he found it hard to look at her, still so innocent and trusting. He hoped that this would last forever, but fate always seemed to have a way of changing things, making the best intentions turn bad. Especially if your last name was Kaiba.
“I don’t know if I should be mad at him, or feel sorry for him.” She mumbled into his chest as he nuzzled her ear. “I just wish he could be happy for once.”
Mokuba pulled back a bit, his long obsidian coloured hair hung loose about his shoulders in long spikes that Kyla found horribly sexy.
“You really shouldn’t stay mad at your father, baby. He only wants the best for you.”
She smiled at him lovingly, her eyes wide, glistening with tears.
“Oh, I know that.” She dismissed. “He’s always been a little on the overprotective side. I think that comes from Aunt Serenity. Every time I feel angry at him I stop and think about how much he suffered growing up with Grampa, and then when Aunt Serenity got sick…” She paused and shook her head slightly. “He’s suffered so much, but it instead of breaking him, it only made him strong. He loves the people who are close to him with all his heart.”
Mokuba’s eyes clouded over for a moment.
“Sometimes I wish Seto was more like Joey. He’s so distant and withdrawn from everyone around him. I know he loves me, but there are times when I think Isis is right. He sees the people in his life as object, things that belong to him.”
Kyla stood on her toes and kissed him softly, trying to ease some of his pain.
“When I was a kid I wanted to be just like him. Once I got older I was worried that that very thing would occur. Now I just wish he could let go of his pain and let people in once and awhile.” He stroked her back absently.
“We have each other now.” Kyla said as she hugged him tightly.
Mokuba returned the embrace. There was no emotion in his eyes.

Ryou had been working for twelve hours straight, desperate to keep his mind on his work and off other subjects. A familiar drill that had been put in place years before when he felt that he might break apart, his body empty, a shell that had no contents.
He tucked a strand of pale hair behind his ear and stood up, stretching out the kinks in his back. His arms up over his head he leaned back and enjoyed the sensation of his muscles pulling, the tension leaving his body.
As he returned his arms to his sides he was struck with the feeling that someone was watching him. A tendril of fear worked its way into his stomach like a parasite, making him feel some what nauseous and panicky at the same time.
Slowly he looked around the room but could not see anyone, his office which he normally regarded as a quiet sanctuary in the basement of the museum now suddenly felt like a prison. Tentatively he took a step towards the door. Aware that the time was late and he was no doubt the last one in the building, he suddenly had an overwhelming desire to be upstairs in the safety of the exhibits which were patrolled by night watchmen. The basement was not on the list of areas that required any security as they did not house anything of value and merely had the basic alarm system. The fear increased at the realization that no one would hear him call out from down here either, as the rooms had been sound proofed so that people could work without being disturbed by the many visitors to the museum during the day.
A low sound from the side of the room caused him to jump. He could not be sure, but he thought it sounded like a laugh, a cold laugh. With a burst of adrenaline, he grabbed his coat from the rack and moved quickly to the door.
His hand reached for the knob, almost grasping it, when the hand snaked out and grabbed him by the throat.

Seto watched Isis combing her long lustrous hair and felt a sudden wave of emotion. He longed to open up his wife, to tell her everything about the darkness inside him, the desires that drove him. But as always he remained closed, although he was regarded as a strong emotionless man, inside he was uncertain, afraid of rejection.
He stood behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Isis.” He started, looking at her reflection in the mirror.
She was, and always would be a very beautiful woman, and he was well aware of the envy that was often directed his way. If only they realized just how lucky he truly was. Isis was his anchor, the one person he could rely on to keep him together at all times. She looked up at him, her essiession wary.
“Mokuba thinks that I am being far too hard on you.” He stated, the best attempt at an apology that he could muster.
As much as he wanted to reconcile with his wife, the image of Joey Wheeler still ate at him. She placed a soft hand on his and looked deep into his eyes.
“And what is it that you think, my husband?” She asked quietly.
Seto felt the guilt nagging at him as she, despite his actions, continued to treat him with love and respect.
“I think I have not been very fair to you all these years. You’re right, Isis. You have stood by my side, despite…” He stopped, unable to let the words free.
Isis stood up and turned to him, placing her hand on his face, and expression of understanding on her beautiful face. “I know what’s in your heart, Seto. Your soul is an old one, and it is reacting to a situation that never should have happened. You are part of each other, and when one is lost, the other struggles not to die with it.”
Seto pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her.
“Isis, I wish I could promise you what you deserve. I regret that I cannot be the man you need. But know this, I do love you, you are the part of me that shines bright and makes me feel alive.”
Isis bit back a sob at his confession. It was the first time in many years that he allowed her to see the real Seto, a chance to understand his pain and his love. She looked up into his blue eyes and smiled.
“It was never my wish to cause you pain, Seto.” A tear slid down her face and he bent forward to kiss it away.
“I have no right to ask you this.” He said quietly. “But I have to know or it will eat away at me until I know for sure.”
Isis silenced him with a kiss.
“I think that we need to forget the past and look to the future.” She stroked his hair. “Our future.”
The weight lifted, he picked up his wife and carried her over to their bed.

Bones was sitting quietly at his desk when Joey entered the office, his expression unreadable.
“I wasn’t sure if I should call you or not, so I covered my ass and called Lisa too.” Bones announced, not looking up from the computer he was typing notes into.
Joey sat down and looked at the box that was placed on one of the examining tables.
“Is that it?” He asked, nodding towards pac package.
A pair of dark rimmed eyes peeked out from behind the monitor and stared at him. “I think we need to wait for Lisa.” Joey didn’t say anything, aware of the trouble that Bone had put himself in by calling Joey down here. “In fact, officially, you were never here my friend.”
The doors swung open and Lisa quickly entered, looking quite spooked at the walk down to the morgue. Joey couldn’t help but to grin at her expression.
“Hey Lisa, you look a little tense, maybe you should lie down for a bit.” He pointed to one of the empty steel tables, next to one that was occupied by a body draped with a white sheet.
Bones chuckled. “Go ahead Lisa, John doesn’t bite, he’d probably enjoy the company.”
Lisa glared at them and hastily walked over to the two men, her face twisted with anger.
“You two are jerks!!” She announced. “You deserve each other.”
The men smiled at her with almost identical expression of innocence.
“Just trying to lighten the mood.” Bones joked. “I’m afraid what I have to show you isn’t going to help things to much.”
He got up and went over to the box on the table. “This arrived this morning addressed to the Morgue, but the letter in the envelope was clearly meant for you Joey.” He picked up a piece of paper that had been carefully sealed in a plastic bag. “Don’t worry kids, I wore gloves and used tweezers to put it in the bag.” He said anticipating their quon. on.
Joey walked over to him and took the letter from his grasp.
Detective Wheeler,
I was sorry to hear that you are having troubles
With some young women.
Isn’t that always the way with girls,
Hopes this helps with your case,
It’s pretty apparent that the department
Doesn’t have one, or just isn’t using it.
He looked up as Bones pulled on his gloves and carefully opened the box to reveal it’s contents. Lisa stepped away from the table, her pallor turning white as her hands sought purchase on the desk.
Bones just looked at him as he regarded the “gift” that had been sent to them.
“It’s human, and pretty fresh.”
Joey’s hands clenched at his sides, torn between frustration and anger as he started at the brain that lay encased in the paper walls.
“The spook is just having fun with us. “ He was tone was almost incredulous at the blatant poke made by the killer at the inability of the police to solve the murders.
“What kind of monster are we dealing with here?” Lisa asked, swallowing hard in an attempt to keep her stomach from rising up into her throat.
“We gotta stop this guy, Lisa.” He voice cracked a bit with emotion. “Tell me that you have something, I don’t care how small.”
She put a hand on his arm in sympathy.
“Joey, you know that you can’t get involved with this. You could face a suspension.” She knew that no matter what she said he would not be deterred from this case.
“He’s taunting us, Benetti, he thinks he’s untouchable and we’re incompetent. And what make it worse is that he’s right and girls are dying. Don’t ask me to stay out of this, not after this.”
Lisa sighed and nodded. “Okay. We got something. But you didn’t hear it from me.”
