Chapter 10: Alive
Time passed quickly for the people inside the palace and as the time grew, so did Yugi’s stomach. It soon was three months into the pregnancy and the excitement only grew.
“So, have you been eating your eggs?”
“Yep!”
“And water has replaced wine and beer?”
“Of course!”
“And have you been doing your daily walks around the palace for exercise?”
“Yeah. I go around like twice. Man, can that get tiresome,” Yugi sighed as the girls laughed.
Mia, the one giving Yugi the vocal check list, sat up straight. “Well then, I would just have to say that…you are going to make a great parent!”
Yugi laughed and blushed.
“Thanks. That’s good to hear. I’ll tell you what, if you weren’t here, I wouldn’t know the first thing about what to do. I can’t thank you enough.”
“Just make sure the pregnancy and the birth goes smoothly and your child’s smiling eyes will be reward enough.”
Yugi smiled.
“So, Yugi,” Dalila asked, “how has this been sitting with Yami? The pregnancy and being a future father?”
Yugi smiled to himself mostly. “He’s been…wonderful. So happy and supportive.” Yugi chuckled. “He’s always so protective of me and the baby it seems he’s going to die from heart failure one of these nights…RA FORBID!!” he screamed the last part as the girls laughed again.
“That’s good that he’s all for it,” said Kira. “Imagine if he wasn’t. That’d be tough.”
“But he isn’t…” Sima said through her teeth before she directed her attention to Yugi. “So, tell us more about what the Pharaoh is really like when he’s nt preending to be all ‘high and mighty’.”
**
“So how are things with Yugi going?” Seto asked as he, Joey and Yami all sat in the main lounge.
“So far, so good, thank the gods.”
“What do you mean?”
Yami sighed. “I just get so worried sometimes. I get worked up when he is surrounded by the friends he’s made, when he’s out of my sight…I can’t help it. Maybe I’m too protective.”
“No,” said Joey. “I think Yugi’s the kind of person that likes to be nurtured and protected.”
“Just like you like to be loved beyond human capability. You two are perfect for each other,” Seto added.
Yami chuckled deeply. “Perfect…yet we’re completely different.”
Joey tilted his head letting his action ask the question.
“Yugi is pure. He’s the day, the sun. But me…I’m nothing but a dark maze that none can penetrate. Nevertheless, he always seems to break the brick walls and see to my inner soul. He’s the light to my darkness. The breath of warm air in my winter horror land.”
He went inside himself.
‘I’m such a self arrogant bastard that some call heartless and cruel. So why does he love me so much?’
“Yami?!”
He jerked his head up.
“What?”
“You okay?” Seto asked. “I think you spaced out for a bit.”
“Oh…yeah. I’m fine.”
**
That night, Yami and Yugi got into bed not much said between the two…which really worried Yugi. He sat restlessly for a long while, feigning sleep, as was the pharaoh.
~*~*
Yugi woke with an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. He put his hand at the pain’s origin place as he felt something quite slimey and...flat. He looked down to see a large gash ripping his abdomen, covered in blood.
“Lost something?”
Yugi looked up to see a shadowed man.
“Wh…Who are you? Answer me!”
“Why my dear young one, don’t say that you don’t remember me…I am just a forgotten memory playing in the back of your forgotten past.”
“What? Stop speaking in riddles! Now answer me: who are you?! What do you wa…”
The man held up a small figure covered in a thick crimson fluid…that made the pain I Yugi’s stomach hurt all the more.
“N-no. …please no.”
Through the gloominess, Yugi could almost hear the man smile mercilessly.
“You take something from me…I take something from you.”
“No…”
The man held up a dagger, that had already been bloodied, up to the now screaming infant’s throat.
“No! Please don’t! Please!!” Yugi cried as his pain increased and sent him further to the round.
The other laughed as he quickly brought the edge of the blade across the form’s throat.
“NOO!!!”
~*~*
The boy woke with a silent start as he sat up in a warm sweat, panting.
‘A…dream?’
He ripped the covers off of himself and looked at the very noticeable clump bundled up under his skin. He sighed and placed his hand on it…when he felt a soft thump.
He shrilled at the abnormal sensation as he got another queasy feeling.
“Yugi?!”
He felt Yami wake next to him worry and extreme concern in his eyes.
“What? What is it? What’s wrong?!” Yami asked frantic that he wasn’t getting an answer.
Yugi looked over to him, a growing smile on his face.
Yami blinked.
“Yugi….wha…”
“Yami…the baby…”
“The baby?!! What? Is something wrong?!”
Yugi took his hand and slowly placed it on his stomach as another soft sweep made its way against his skin.
Yami gasped as there was another.
“What in all of Ra’s…”
“It’s the baby. Yami…it’s kicking………it’s alive.”
Yami looked into his koi’s face, filled with happiness and…relief? He put that aside as he himself brought on the wonderful emotions of feeling his and Yugi’s creation move and squirm in spite of itself.
Yugi and Yami both laughed and embraced each other adoringly.
“Yugi…by Ra. This is wonderful! Beautiful!”
“I know.”
However, Yugi’s smile did not last as the dream came back to him and he adopted a look of utter pain and worry.
‘I can’t tell Yami…not yet. I’ll ask the High Priest Seto and Dalila about it tomorrow. I only hope it doesn’t foreshadow the future…’
