Chapter 10

White Orchid

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Otogi looked up as the doors to his office slammed open.

“Mr. Ryuuji, I’m so sorry! I couldn’t stop them!” His secretary cried, and Otogi frowned when Bakura and Marik entered.

“Let’s talk, Dice Boy.” Bakura snarled, slamming his hands down onto Otogi’s desk. Otogi glared.

“Fine. But honestly, don’t blame me for Ryou being upset about our break-up. It was his fault.”

“I don’t give a FUCK about your breakup!!!” Bakura roared. “Well, yeah I do, BUT WHAT YOU DID WAS JUST LOW!!!”

“Oh?”

“How could you?!” Bakura screamed. “How could you not only break up with him, but take him away from his loved ones?!”

“What?” Otogi asked, blinking.

“Ryou was taken away!!”

“What?” Otogi gasped, standing. “By who?!”

“Social Services!!! YOU CALLED THEM, DIDN’T YOU?!?” Bakura roared, grabbing Otogi’s collar. Otogi’s eyes widened.

“Social…..” He gasped, then his face was overcome by a look of fury. “THAT BASTARD!!!” And he jerked away from Bakura and ran for the door. “I’LL KILL HIM!!” He screamed. Bakura and Marik blinked.

“Uhhhh…. I guess Dice Boy didn’t do it.” Marik said.

“Fuck it. Let’s find out where Ryou went.” Bakura said.

……………………

The car stopped and the driver got out, but Ryou didn’t move. The back door opened and the man bent over to look in.

“Ryou?” He called softly. Ryou turned away. The man sighed and reached out and placed a gentle hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Come on, son. Out we go.” Ryou slowly slid from the car and looked up at the Children’s Home. “Let’s go in and fill out some paperwork. With any luck, you’ll be heading to a foster home in a matter of hours.

“I wanna go home.” Ryou whimpered. The man sighed and nodded.

“I know, Ryou. Come on, now.” And he led the boy inside. Ryou went through piles of paperwork, and then found himself in a room full of boys from age six to sixteen. They were playing video games, Duel Monsters, action figures and just running around. Ryou looked around, then slowly made his way over to an empty corner by the window. He stared out onto the street, waiting for his yami, and thinking over the last 24 hours. He had been so happy when Otogi finally came home, but now… Nakazawa had ruined his life. Ryou pulled his knees up to his chest and hid his face into his thighs, crying silently.

Otogi hated him. He had been taken away from his yami. What did he have to live for?

“Ryou Bakura?” A woman called, and Ryou looked up, rubbing his eyes.

“Yes?”

“Come with me, please.” She said, and Ryou followed her.

“Yes?”

“We found a compatible family for you.” The woman said, and Ryou looked down.

“Oh.” He said. The woman blinked.

“Ryou, you’re really lucky to be fostered so quickly.” She said. “Show some gratitude, okay?”

“I won’t fake something I don’t feel.” Ryou said, and the woman blinked, and frowned.

“With an attitude like that, Mister, you won’t go anywhere in life.”

“Hnh…. Like I care.” Ryou said. The woman sighed.

“Ryou… I know you’re upset.”

“You have no idea how I feel.” Ryou said, and the woman nodded.

“Well… no. I’ve never been in your position. But be grateful that you’ll be with a new family soon, who will care about you.” Ryou didn’t answer. The woman led Ryou through a door, and a man and a woman stood. “Ryou, this is Akiko and Tamaki Shimizu. They have offered to take you in.” Ryou stared at the floor.

“Hello, Ryou.” The woman said, holding out her hand. Ryou blinked, and slowly took it, trying his hardest to be polite.

“ ‘Lo.” Ryou mumbled, still not looking up. He winced as he felt a firm hand on his shoulder.

“It’s okay, Ryou. You’ll relax when we get you home and introduce you to your brother and sister.”

“Huh?!” Ryou gasped, looking up, alarmed.

“We’re fostering two other children.” The man said. “A young lady named Miaka, and an older boy named Hiro. You’ll get along fine.” And after signing some papers, they packed Ryou up into their car and drove off, a mere fifteen minutes before Bakura and Marik showed up to find the boy.

They arrived at a nice house, but Ryou still saw it as a dreaded prison, and still viewed his new foster parents as his jailers. They led him into the house, and to the living room where a boy about a year older than Ryou, and a girl about a year younger than Ryou stood, staring at Ryou…. Or, more accurately, at his hair.

“Miaka., Hiro, this is Ryou.”

“Hi. Nice ta meetcha.” The girl said in a false cheery tone, and the boy simply nodded. Ryou said nothing.

“Ryou, why don’t you tell us about yourself?” Tamaki said, and Ryou looked at the woman and shrugged. “Well, there must be something.”

“….. Not really.” Ryou said, with another shrug.

“Okayyy….” Tamaki said, and looked to her husband for help.

“Have any hobbies, Ryou?” Akiko said, and Ryou shrugged. “Well, what do you enjoy doing?”

“….. reading, I guess.” Ryou mumbled, and heard Hiro whisper ‘bookworm’ to Miaka.

“Anything else? Play any sports?” Akiko asked.

“No.”

“What about your friends? What is the name of your best friend?” Tamaki asked, and Ryou shrugged.

“Yugi, I guess….”

“Is that it?”

“Yami… Malik, Marik, Seto, Bakura, Jonouchi, Honda…”

“How about a girlfriend?” Akiko asked, and Ryou’s face turned red.

“ooohh…..” Tamaki teased. “What’s her name?” Ryou said nothing. “Come on, spill it. Who is she? What’s she like?”

“We’re…. Not together anymore.” Ryou said softly, and stared at the floor.

“Did something happen?” Ryou nodded. “How long has it been since you broke up?”

“Last night.” Ryou sniffled. “I, I think I need to take a nap or something…” His foster mother nodded.

“Allright. You’ll be sharing a room with Hiro. Come on up.” Akiko said, and led Ryou upstairs. After showing Ryou to his new room, and failing in his attempt to get Ryou to warm up to him, he left the hikari alone. Ryou sighed and looked around. The bed was a bunk bed, and since the bottom bunk was messy and unmade, Ryou climbed to the top. He kicked off his shoes, and squirmed out of his clothes until he was left in his boxers, then curled up under the blankets.

A single tear trailed down his face as he closed his eyes and drifted to sleep.

………………………

Nakazawa looked up as his office door burst open. He blinked and stared at Otogi, glaring at him in pure hate.

“Ah, Ryuuji. Please come in.” He said with a smile. Otogi glared and slammed the door.

“You….” He snarled, slamming his hands down onto the desk. “You called Social Services. It was YOU!!” Nakazawa grinned.

“Why yes… As I recall, you paid me three thousand. Two thousand for your… bodies….. and a thousand to keep you out of jail. You did NOT pay the final thousand to keep your…. EX…. Out of the hands of Social Services.” Otogi stared.

“Damn you….” He hissed. “WHY?!?!” Nakazawa grinned.

“Because you didn’t pay. On the bright side, Ryuuji, now that I’ve already called, you don’t have to pay for him anymore. He’s beyond my reach. So you only owe the two thousand again.” And he pat Otogi on the head.

“Damn you…..” Otogi hissed, and his eyes filled with tears. “DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!” And he whirled and ran from the office. Nakazawa chuckled.

“See you tonight, Ryuuji….” He said to himself, and got back to work.

……………

Otogi burst into his house, and ran to his room. He was upset, and furious. He felt horrible for what he had done to Ryou, and felt even worse about forgetting to pay the final thousand to keep Ryou with his yami. He had failed Ryou. Hurt him in the worst way possible. Marik and Bakura were right. He WAS the one who had brought Social Services down on Ryou. He had done so by not paying Nakazawa. But he sighed. It was true. Ryou was safe now. He was safe from Nakazawa….. but he was undoubtedly miserable. Otogi entered his bedroom and stared sadly as Daisy came bounding over, looking for Ryou. Otogi looked down at the puppy. He knelt and picked her up, closing his eyes and letting her lick away his tears.

“Oh, Ryou…. I’m so sorry……” He whispered.
