Chapter 10

I took special care to get ready for dinner. I started with a long soak in a bath mixed with essence of ylang-ylang and hibiscus oils. When I was done, I looked to see what would suit as far as an outfit. I finally decided on a red silk sheath that bared one shoulder. My jewelry selection was fairly easy: the initial necklace and the button bracelet. I placed a few dabs of sandalwood perfume on all my pulse points. I checked everything out in the mirror: perfect. I shut down all the lights, set the alarm, and walked out of the loft. I pushed the call button for the lift and headed for the garage level. I left the lift, got into the Cherokee and drove to the restaurant.

I arrived and parked. I got out of the Cherokee and shortly entered, searching for Seto. The maitre `d lead me to a private dining area. Seto stood when I entered the room. He was divine: a silk shirt so black it had bluish highlights and snug leather pants. I walked across to the table and sat down in the chair he held for me. Before he sat down across from me, he leaned in and kissed my cheek.

“No wonder Bakura and Marik headline you named after a goddess. It suits you,” he commented as he poured a glass of wine for me. I reached for my glass; he grabbed my wrist and looked at the bracelet. “This is an unusual piece…where did you get it from?”

I smiled, “From you, of course. Don’t you recognize it? You should, as you had it on you last night.”

He looked closer at the bracelet. He started to laugh, “Are those the buttons from my shirt? I had wondered where they had gone. You are passionate and creative; just a few of the traits I’m looking for in a woman. I look forward to discovering more about you.”

He gently released my wrist and I lifted the glass to my lips, “Here’s to discovery and all that comes with it,” I toasted.

He lifted his glass and responded, “To you, my goddess.”

The waiter entered the room to begin serving the first course: delicate, creamy lobster bisque. “I hope you don’t mind, but I took it upon myself to order dinner,” he responded to the arched glance I gave him as I was served. “I asked your friend, Flo, and she was more than helpful. She gave me some ideas as to what your tastes are and I hope you will be pleased with what I’ve selected.”

The bisque was followed next by London broil, medium rare, tender asparagus and steamed baby carrots. The dessert course rounded out the meal with a brandy-soaked angel food cake with fresh berries on the side. Throughout the meal, we chatted about many things. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and myself. After the final cups of coffee were poured, we were left to ourselves as the waiter left the room. Seto looked at me from over the rim of his cup, “You are very beautiful. Why did you choose the profession you’re in?”

I carefully set my cup on the table. “I’m not sure I understand your question,” I responded with a neutral tone. I did not like the direction this conversation was taking.

“A woman with your beauty and talents sure be more than a mere plaything for men that have a few screws loose,” he replied. “You should treated with respect, not like a common…”

I held one finger up, “If you want to continue this conversation, don’t say the word you’re about to. I choose to do what I want for my reasons alone. I answer to no one.”

“I want change that.”

“Excuse me? I said I answer to no one; not even you, Seto.”

“Xenobia, look, how long do you think that you can continue to do the things you do? One night, someone could lose complete control and I won’t ever see you again. I don’t want that to happen.”

“I tak take care of myself or did you not notice last night?”

“Wheeler is a dirt bag and stupid as well. A child could handle the likes of him. I’m worried about maniacs…like Marik. You didn’t see his face as he was cutting you. He is a sadist and he may kill you in a fit of what he sees as passion.”

I chewed on my lips and fiddled with the necklace around my neck. He had a point: that thought crossed my mind a number of occasions. But, it was the only way I knew to keep the dream at bay.

It was if he could read my mind, “It’s this dream you keep having, isn’t it? Tell me about it and maybe I can help you.”

“I…I…I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t? I’m trying to understand you and you seem to have a problem dropping your guard,” he replied, sounding a little bit angry.

I quickly became angry myself. “How dare you? You don’t know a damn thing about me…”

“Only because you’re too stubborn to let go,” was his heated reply.

I stood up. If looks could have killed, there would have been nothing left of Seto but a pile of ashes. I reached for the necklace and jerked it off. I threw it across the table at him.

“I think you’ve said enough. I won’t be a kept woman…I have been on my own for too damn long to just roll over and let you control me. I will never be your property-you don’t own me. No one does; do you understand? Stay away from me or I will kill you with my bare hands.”

After that was said, I stormed from the room. I left the restaurant without looking at anyone. I climbed into my Cherokee and sat, gripping the steering wheel. I made a decision. I left the parking lot and drove to the club. I walked to the door and grabbed Wheeler by the arm; roughly, I turned him around.

“Have you seen Bakura? I have to talk to him; now.”

“Get your claws off me! I ain’t seen him. Go in the office and ask Marik. I haven’t got time for you, bitch.”

“Fine…thanks for nothing, jackass,” I snarled as I shoved him out of my way. I went past the bar; it was Mai’s night off. Tristan was the bar back. I ignored his wave as I quickly walked back to Bakura’s office. I kicked the door open and startled Marik. He was sitting with his feet propped on the desk. An evil grin spread across his face.

“Well, Ra be damned. What has you all hot and bothered? I’m surprised you have the guts to face me alone,” he sneered.

“Shut the hell up. Where is Bakura? I need to talk to him and I don’t have time to dork around with you. Where is he?” I growled back.

“Relax…he’ll be here soon. Sit down and make yourself at home,” he said as he got up to close the door. I was too agitated to pay any attention to what he was doing. Seto made me so angry; I couldn’t think straight. All of a sudden, pain exploded at the base of my neck. I collapsed to the ground but not before I heard, “Payback is going to be such a bitch…” and blacked out.
