Chapter 1 – Needing time
The vase hit the wall at an alarming speed and the glass shattered, spraying around. The flowers within fell to the floor, dejectedly as the water coated the room. Seto had a hand against his face to deflect most of the damage and looked up at the woman standing across from him. He’d been with Lee for over six months but he’d never seen her this angry. Actually, come to think of it, he’d never seen her angry.
In the kitchen, the group of people gathered looked up as they heard the noise, wincing.
“Come on, Mokuba” Duke gestured them all towards the door. “We should head out. I know my sister and this is only the beginning. We’ll come back in a few hours….maybe.”
Mokuba looked hesitant. “Will my brother be ok?”
Tea grinned. “Of course he will, he can take care of himself.” Another thud echoed from the ceiling above. “On second thoughts, I’d rather not be a witness to a murder, let’s go.”
Lee wasn’t crying. She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn’t. She slammed her fist down onto the desk again and looked at the man opposite her.
“How could you do this to me?” She screamed at him, hair tumbling down from the knot at the back of her neck. “How could you? I nearly died. Mokuba nearly died. What were you thinking?”
He opened his mouth to answer but shut it again. He didn’t know what to say. She obviously wasn’t waiting for an answer. She started to pace again.
It wasn’t the time, he knew it wasn’t, but he couldn’t help himself but he was drawn to her figure, her beauty, her rage.
“Were you even thinking? God, Seto, this wasn’t just about you. In fact, it wasn’t about you at all. It was about me. They wanted me. They wanted to duel me and I won. Even in a shadow game, I won. But you couldn’t leave it there, oh no, not Seto Kaiba. You had to put my life in danger to prove your worth.”
“That’s insane.” He couldn’t sit by and let her rage at him anymore. “You may have won, Lee, but you ended up in the hospital. You really expect me to have just let them get away with that?”
“I. Nearly. Died, Seto. Not because of the duel but because you antagonized them. I nearly died, Mokuba nearly died but as long as your pride is intact…”
He stood up, placing both hands on the desk “My PRIDE? You think this was about pride?”
“I think this was about revenge, hang the consequences. Seto Kaiba never thinks of the consequences.”
“You end up in the hospital, drained of nearly all your energy and you expect me to do nothing?”
Lee just let out a dry sob and threw herself into a chair, curling into a ball. Seto didn’t know what to say. Of course it had been about revenge, for her.
While he’d caught some of those responsible for challenging Lee, the others had taken her and Mokuba. There had been no duelling then. They’d forced a sick game of Russian roulette upon his brother and his girlfriend.
Every time the barrel of the gun was spun, Lee had screamed for them to take her instead of Mokuba. They’d clicked five chambers against her head and were about to pull the trigger in the sixth when Seto had arrived.
That had been two weeks ago.
Two weeks of her saying nothing.
And now the rage came.
“You left me”. He barely made out the words as her face was pressed into her knees. But he heard. “You left me, Seto. In the hospital. You went after them and they took me. Because you’d gone. Because you left me.” She looked up, her face streaked with tears. Even she hadn’t known that this was what she was angry about. She looked at him, at the man she’d spent six months with. Watched realisation and shame crash onto his perfect features. His too-blue eyes dropped to his desk.
She wiped her eyes and looked at him. “You chose them, Seto. Do you get it? I needed you but you let your own anger get in the way.”
He looked to her. Her lips trembled but she was staring straight at him. He watched her stand up, shakily and head towards to door.
He moved then, to her. She couldn’t leave. He put his arm on hers, trying to turn her to face him. She shook him off.
“Don’t touch me. Please, Seto. I…..I can’t.” Her eyes filled with tears as she looked up to him. Green meeting blue in a haze. He didn’t know what to say.
“Please, Lee. Don’t leave. Don’t leave me.”
She looked away from him. She always fell so deeply into his gaze that she wouldn’t be able to say this is she looked at him.
“Like you left me, you mean?”
Seto felt tears reach his own eyes and battled his brain for a logical answer; something to stop her walking away.
“I didn’t leave you. You were safe. It was a hospital. Lee, I couldn’t let them hurt you like that. No one can hurt you. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do if I can’t protect you. I don’t know what to do without you.”
She turned to him them and put her hand against his cheek. He leaned into it, cherishing her touch. She leaned up to kiss him, lips barely touching. He pressed in closer, feeling the wetness of her cheeks against his. She let herself sway into his arms, just for a few moments.
She stepped away from him, her hand falling from his cheek. She looked straight at him.
“I just….need some time, Seto.”
