Lovers in the Dark
Nikki, a 17-year-old werewolf hunter, was on her first solo hunt after the completion of her training. The chocolate-haired, scarlet-eyed girl shuddered in fear of every shadow that shifted. She wasn’t ready to go solo, not by far. Two hunters sensed her fear, one with crimson eyes, the other with sapphire blue.
“She’s beautiful,” the blue-eyed werewolf said softly. The vampire smiled, his fangs gleaming in the night.
“Yes, she’s too beautiful. We won’t be able to dine on her,” he said sadly. “Come, Yusei, find some other lost soul for us to eat.”
Yusei growled. “I’m not your hunting dog, Yami!” he howled, catching the attention of Nikki.
“Shit! Look, what you’ve done, you’re dead meat now!” Yami shouted, taking to the trees.
“Hey, come back here, coward!” Yusei shouted, but Yami just laughed.
“You’re on your own. She’s a werewolf hunter, I don’t wanna get mixed up in YOUR fight!” Yami snapped. Yusei growled and came out from hiding ready to fight.
He stopped short. The girl was even more stunning up close. Nikki shakily raised her gun, but Yusei wasn’t even looking at her. Suddenly, he darted around her, causing her to scream in terror. He shifted into his wolf form, a dark-blue haired wolf with yellow highlights, and attacked a blond werewolf coming at the hunter from behind. Fur flew as Yusei fought off his long-rival Jack, not for the meal, but to save the girl from him. Yusei whined as Jack broke his front leg with a powerful bite, causing Yusei to fall to the ground, helpless. The werewolf tried to stand, but couldn’t.
Suddenly, Yusei heard a gunshot and Jack fell to the ground, howling in pain as the silver poisoned his system. Yusei shifted back to his human form before the hunter could finish him off.
“For the record,” he gasped, “I was trying to save you.” He passed out before Nikki could respond.

“How come you’re trusting me? I’m a hunter,” Nikki was saying.
“Not a vampire hunter, and you spared my friend’s life, meaning your off the menu,” Yami replied. Yusei opened his eyes. “Well, look who’s awake! Welcome back, Sleeping Beauty.”
“Shove it,” Yusei growled, trying to sit up. Unfortunately, on of his arms didn’t want to work. Yami laughed darkly.
“Forgot Jack broke the damned thing in your little scuffle already?” Yami roared. Yusei bared his fangs. “Ooooo! Scary!” Yami continued laughing.
“Shoot him please and put me out of my misery,” Yusei joked to Nikki. The huntress couldn’t help herself. She started laughing. The two acted more like human brothers than lethal monsters. Yusei smiled.
‘Damn, she’s beautiful,’ he thought.
“She’s beautiful,” the blue-eyed werewolf said softly. The vampire smiled, his fangs gleaming in the night.
“Yes, she’s too beautiful. We won’t be able to dine on her,” he said sadly. “Come, Yusei, find some other lost soul for us to eat.”
