Chapter one 'Alone'

The static on the tv wich is on the floor, the traffic light that blinks
green and no other color, the dust wofting in the air, the traffic not
moving yet in a pattern past of collisions.

"What is going on?" A small boy patted the ground desperatly searching
for his glasses. "Zane?" He called out desperatley from under the trash can
he was hiding under. "What happened just now?" He rose on shaking knees barely standing up straight. "Everything is..." He saw rows of pidgeons on the ground as if they weren't interupted during their flight. "I gotta find someone.." He ran tripping away to the still traffic and froze when he saw what was inside. "Oh god no!" He cried at the sight of a dead family sitting in their station wagon. "Oh god no!" He backed away and threw up. He heard nothing but wisping winds as he walked away from the traffic frightened. "HELLO!" He broke the silence but still no answere.
"IS ANYONE THERE?" He began to cry. "HELP SOMEONE!" He ran through the streets searching for anything still alive but hope turned to doubt as the immages of the dead city burned into his memory, each image more horrific than the last. He ran past an elementary school and ran fast past it. He couldn't bare the sight of the children in the schoolyard. Soon he came upon Kaibacorp and wondered if anyone would survive in such a hightech place. He was affraid he'd see more dead body's but was astound that no one was in the building at all. When he left he tried the pier. Nothing but dead fisherman. "This doesn't make sense, why is everyone dead?" He tried to remember what he was doing before he hid under the trashcan but all he could remember was a white light and everything after. "Why can't I remember?" He cried outloud, who would hear him? "Why wasn't I taken' with the others, this is worse than death!" After he calmed down he continued to walk around looking for another soul. "Where should I go? I don't know what to do anymore." The thought of suicide was one option that scared him. He wasn't sure if he could bring himself to do it. As he walked on he heard something else across the wind."IS SOMEONE THERE?" He called toward a small district of Domino City. He heard the sound again but couldn't understand it. He found himself at the entrance of the museum. The voice stopped but he was drawn inside. "I remember a new exibit was brought here a month ago." He said to himself. "But I can't remember what happened after that." He sighed. "This is giving me a headache." He was pulled by a strange force and found himself infront of the new exibit. "How did I get here?" He was fear struck when the statue of a man blinked.
"GET AWAY FROM THERE!" A voice called. Syrus looked behind him and saw Yugi of all people.
"What's going on?" Syrus froze in panic but Yugi grabbed him and dragged him out of the museum.
"That was close." Yugi gasped. "Are you alright?"
"No I'm not alright, I lost my memory of today, everyone is dead, I can't find my brother, and some wierd statue is trying to kill me!"Syrus blurted out crying, out of stress and happiness of finally finding another living person.
"Calm down." Yugi held him hopping he wouldn't run away. "I had the same experienc you had." Yugi's grip became loose. "What is your name?"
"I'm Syrus." He sniffled. "I know you, your famous, well were."
"Have you been home since.."Yugi asked.
"After seeing so many dead I couldn't..."
"Me too." Yugi helped him to his feet. "It's getting dark, we should find somewhere safe." Yugi wiped a tear from Syrus's cheek."It's ok, I won't let anything happen to you."
"I want to know if my family is still alive." Syrus held onto Yugi's arm as they walked to the closest house. Yugi was silent, he didn't want to give false hope.
"This house looks safe." Yugi Said.
"I don't wanta go in there might be dead bodies in there!"
"The dead aren't something to be scared of Syrus, they are just the shells of people." Yugi tried to explain.
"IT SCARES ME OK!"
"Relax I'll check." Yugi went inside. Only a young couple were there in their bed but they looked like they were asleep, but they were dead so Yugi closed the door to thier room and went back outside to get Syrus.
"Get some sleep Syrus." Yugi said as he sat in a chair facing the window.
"After today can we sleep with the light on?" Syrus asked.
"NO LIGHTS!" Yugi snapped.
"Don't yell at me like that!"
"Sorry, I didn't mean it, but it's important that we leave no lights on."
"Why Yugi?"
"The less you know, the easier it will be for you to sleep." Yugi continued to watch out the window.
"You know something your not telling me!" Syrus remarked. Yugi became quiet for a moment.
"I'll tell you everything in the morning ok." Yugi finally answered.
"I can't sleep." Syrus said but Yugi didn't answere him. "can you lay down with me...Please." Yugi looked back at Syrus and just realized that he had not stopped shivering since he found him. He lay next to him and stroked his hair. Soon Syrus was falling asleep. Yugi was watching his eyes closing. It reminded him of when he was the one who needed someone to look after him. He remembered Atem's kindness towards him. Yugi could see himself in Syrus and figured that it was his turn to be the strong one with someone to protect.
